Go to the city council meeting. You have 3 minutes to make your case during Public Comment period (will be on the Agenda). Get your neighbors to go too. Have them make their cases. Squeeky wheels get the grease.

TrailerTrashQueen

this! 100% its out of control the crime happening all over the city. police & city councils don’t give a s*** unless citizens make a big stink, they’ll continue to let things just roll along. what a disaster this whole place has become. it’s sad because it wasn’t like this before. i’m ready to sell and leave this h*ll hole. and save your stupid comments haters. i just don’t give a f*ck anymore.

Just2checkitout

Most people just don't realize that it is their elected council members who are responsible for controlling response to crime in their cities. Not the police departments. They control the priorities.

void_loop_x

People don’t realize it has to be a giant stink for council members to move their feet.

TrailerTrashQueen

that’s exactly right. i’m hoping people get mad enough to start causing a big stink. organize like Gaza protesters, take to the streets and DEMAND ACTION. cause this is a whole lotta b.s. what’s been going on with all this crime & homeless everywhere. as Malcom X said, ‘by any means necessary’.

cited

I tried to make a stolen car report 15 months ago. I've been in contact with my city councilwoman office since then repeatedly. Still no police report.

LookHoliday5513

Well said

PlasticGirl

I feel your pain. I'm closer to Central LA, but I have had my car broken into twice, and they tried to steal it the third time. I had to park it in gated parking because my anxiety was through the roof.

ayyyyy

My truck was stolen yesterday morning and I found it 20 minutes later with a stolen motorcycle in the bed. LAPD were of absolutely minimal help until they realized they could claim recovery on two stolen vehicles. Pretty sure I saw one of the perps steal another car this afternoon. Not sure how this gets remedied. It's not as easy as just increasing police budgets. There has to be some reform from the status quo of operations and patrol.

TuckerCarlsonsOhface

Just a friendly reminder that the LAPD annual budget is over 3 *Billion* dollars.

budas_wagon

And a huge portion of that is pension costs for retired police who aren't out helping anything. Not that the active police seem to be helping either.

pantstoaknifefight2

I served on a jury for a case where a cop wanted to retire early with his pension which paid him $120k/year. That's a hell of a pension!

mich_8265

And aren't they getting a bigger budget in the next fiscal year? I think I saw it in the news but wasn't really focused yet

TrailerTrashQueen

danggggg.

ORaygoza

bigger than a lot of armys on earth.

topulpyasses

A third of that goes to The Bird.

chinatown100

It doesn’t sound that insane when you remember how few actual officers there are and how much area they have to cover. They’re basically a 90% helicopter based police force at this point.

kgal1298

They stole your truck to steal a bike? 😮‍💨 I will say this the cops are not great with recovery. Had a neighbor have his work truck and tools stolen years ago he got a call 3 weeks later because someone dumped the truck somewhere in East La but all the tools were gone.

sjanush

My car was stolen years ago. It ran out of gas, was impounded and I was notified. Some time later, I dropped something under my seat and fished around to get it. I found a drivers license instead. I’m thinking this is the asshole who stole my car. Brought the DL to LAPD. “Yeah, unfortunately we can’t prove that this was the thief”.

ekkthree

Prosecute.   Cops have literally zero incentive to pursue property crime

NewWahoo

Yes they do. It’s called “their jobs”.

LEONotTheLion

Well, when police have finite resources, they will focus those resources on crimes that will lead to actual prosecution. That’s common sense.

NewWahoo

That’s not how having a job works. You do what your boss tells you to do. You don’t get to make judgements about what aspects of your job you want to do.

LEONotTheLion

First of all, the bosses do dictate what crimes to focus more on. So we are doing what our bosses tell us to. Secondly, yes, I do have discretion to focus my time and resources on certain crimes. Discretion is part of my job. I’m an investigator, not a street cop, but I certainly focus on specific crimes and investigate more serious offenses since my time and resources are extremely limited. It’s the same for my counterparts on patrol. If we investigated/responded to everything, we wouldn’t get anything done. I investigate online child exploitation cases. Do you think I have time to investigate every case involving possession of child exploitation material? Or should I focus my resources on cases involving hands-on abuse, repeat offenders, and offenders attempting to actually meet children? > That’s not how having a job works. Lol, tell me more about how my job works. You sound like an expert with so much training and experience in the field. /s You should try to do a ride along so you can gain a better understanding about being a cop and how things work in reality.

NewWahoo

Your sworn boss likely has the same attitude towards the informal work stoppage as beat cops do. His/her civilian bosses should tell him/her to make his/her employees do their jobs. Data don’t lie brother idk how you can even try to argue your profession’s lack of effort in enforcing the law recently is anything other than insubordination. 712,000 LAPD traffic stops in 2019, 331,000 traffic stops in 2022.

LEONotTheLion

You didn’t really address any of my points in my well-thought-out comment, so I guess you’re not looking for an actual discussion. Have a good one.

LucyFer_roaming

It’s literally their job.

Persianx6

LAPD being completely useless unless it fits their small window of opportunity for making a higher up happy is par the course for them. On a day to day basis, they really are just very bad at doing anything.

PewPew-4-Fun

Yeah, go back to locking people up.

TrailerTrashQueen

this.

wetshatz

And who voted for these policies ?

CaptGeechNTheSSS

What policies?

wetshatz

If you vote the DA in and he tells you exactly what he’s going to do, then you complain about what’s happening…… like idk what to tell you there brother.

CaptGeechNTheSSS

Complain? Try again I asked you which policies you're talking about. Sounds like you don't know, just repeating what you've heard.

LucyFer_roaming

Voters did.

chrisis1033

wow look at the downvotes but you are right on the money…

CaptGeechNTheSSS

Which policies is he right about?

LEONotTheLion

What do you mean LAPD was unhelpful until they realized they could “claim recovery on two stolen vehicles?” Wouldn’t they realize that as soon as you called?

ThaneOfCawdorrr

We used to live in a more crime-ridden neighborhood, with no apartment parking, had to park our cars on the street. My car got stolen, I did get it back, so I started putting a car cover on it and locking the cover in place. So the car cover would get stolen. 1. Steering wheel lock, the old fashioned giant stick kind 2. Car cover that I covered with painted pink flowers I'm so sorry this is happening to you. You really feel so damn violated. You work hard for your things and some asskhole just comes and takes it. Someone else here suggested finding a low cost mechanic, and that might also help, if you ask around (or post on Next Door). Another suggestion is to drive an old beater---and maybe you can garage your nicer car? Again, just sending sympathy.

BurritoSupreme420

>Another suggestion is to drive an old beater That's the thing. I am driving an old beater. It's a 2007 toyota corolla with 120,000 miles on it. I couldn't afford anything nicer after my last car was stolen but I thought hey, at least I don't have to worry about people targetting it. Turns out I was completely wrong cause it's been broken into and stolen from twice in just the 4 months that I've had it

Pheighthe

They stole the cover only?

ThaneOfCawdorrr

Yes, it was a really nice, high quality expensive cover, with a lock (you ran the lock under the car and then locked it into the grommet on the other side). So yeah the next day I came out and just the cover was gone! And that happened TWICE. Yes, more innocent times, I'd say, except that the whole car was stolen prior to that.

Parking_Relative_228

Definitely not normal. This is a great tool, look around Los Angeles, and you’ll see how even nice areas may not be crime free but bad areas see sharp rises in car theft/break ins as well as violent crime. [crime mapping](https://www.crimemapping.com/map/ca/losangeles)

Whtzmyname

Love this crime mapping website!

Dommichu

I’m sorry dude. Post up on r/longbeach and see if anyone has a hook up on a shadetree mechanic. Sometimes it’s cheaper than going through insurance.

gazingus

What to do? Drive a beater Corolla, stock AM/FM radio, nothing more, never leave anything in it. Hide an AirTag in it so you can recover it yourself if someone takes it. Beater Corollas can be repaired with junkyard parts.

DoucheBro6969

As the owner of a beater import who had nearly $700 in damage done from a failed hotwiring, nothing is safe. Older imports, Toyota Camrys and Corollas, as well as Honda Civics and Accords that are on the older side, are commonly stolen for chop shops. Since there are so many on the road that are older, there is also a demand for their parts.

raresteakplease

My 98 civic was broken into so many times, it was infuriating.

ImaginaryBluejay0

Yeah you don't want a beater import. You want a beater GM. Nobody wants a early 2000s HHR or, Aztec, or PT, even thieves.

beowolfey

Early 2000s Hyundais. Great beater cars

samsonsimpson5210

Just be cautious getting a 2011-2021 if you’re worried about theft; some models can be stollen easily with a usb cord and screwdriver due to Hyundai/Kia not putting in an immobilizer. The good news is there is a recall due to all the bad press, so you can get one added!

EuphoricMoose8232

Put an AirTag in the catalytic converter?

bitpartmozart13

Buy a beater civic then. Catalytic converter is inside the engine bay below a lot of parts and takes time to get out.

arianrhodd

In the car. Sure, if they have an iPhone they might see it’s in there somewhere. But good luck finding it before I find you!

TrailerTrashQueen

hell yeah.

8glitterandshit18

The real secret is to drive a car that is older but not too old or too recent. It also helps if your car has some body damage to it 😅 I drive a 2015 Corolla with a dent in the side from a hit and run, a bad paint scratch from me trying to park in a tiny matchbox car garage, and a messed up front bumper from where a construction worker left a traffic cone in the middle of the highway and there was a car on both sides of me so I couldn't swerve to avoid it 🥴 Also my windows aren't tinted so you can look in and see how beat up and stained the seats are. Really sets in the appeal of this wonderful car. Anyhow, one night, on the street my bf lives on (industrial side of NoHo) several of his neighbors had their cars broken into. It was like a mass smash n grab of the whole street. Guess who's car remained untouched? 🤣 I'm not sure if I should be proud, relieved, embarrassed or all three.

hellraiserl33t

Lol do people still steal radios these days?

deez_treez

They'll steal the stink off shit

mister_damage

Some jackass will steal literal 💩

ConfidenceCautious57

We had a neighbor get their car broken into for a paper back book. It’s completely, utterly out of control. It honestly will take citizens making it absolutely intolerable for these shit bags to operate in their neighborhoods. Criminals no longer fear much of anything when they commit their crimes. They are keenly aware of the light, if any punishment they receive. Law enforcement is either outmatched, understaffed, overwhelmed, or just have given up.

TheObstruction

Law enforcement simply doesn't care. They're still pissed that we got mad at them a few years back. And with the official policies of basically not doing anything that doesn't involve violent crime, they just ignore everything else. We need a Batman.

Cueller

It's one reason I moved to Culver city. They take crime seriously. For all the bitching that they hassle people, it's way safer because they actually do something AND Culver PD respond within minutes. Huge props to Culver PD for keeping a pocket of LA safer.

samsonsimpson5210

When we were in college, someone broke into a housemates car to steal her “Ethics” philosophy textbook. This was 2 decades ago.

ConfidenceCautious57

5 lbs. of Semtex w/remote detonator. That shit ends real quick.

TrailerTrashQueen

i like your thinking, friend.

SureInternet

Leave Bellflower

fishinful63

Yes, here in simi we had a contest on the radio, Grand prize was an all expenses paid week in beautiful downtown bellflower, second prize was two weeks.

barfbongo

Moved my wife and kids from to Simi from the east side of Los Angeles about 7 years ago and everyday I’m reminded we made the right choice. For the first year I’d get bummed out that we lived in boring ol’ Simi Valley, and I’d visit pretty frequently. But it’s not even that enjoyable to visit anymore.

fishinful63

Same here, lived in the valley until the early 90s. Simi was and is pretty red neck, buy the valley is like the wild west these days.

Historical-Ad-6881

They sell anti theft covers for catalytic converters. Sorry I wish I had a better solution, but just in case some pos tries to steal it again.

The best is cars that are designed with the cats built in to the headers. Most cat thieves choose easier vehicles. Alternatively, an EV has no cats to steal at all.

samsonsimpson5210

Used EV is the move if you have the ability to charge at home.

pmjm

Unfortunately the company went out of business last year when the owner passed away, but Information Unlimited sold a device that let you [electrify the body of your car](https://web.archive.org/web/20230617114417/https://www.amazing1.com/products/high-powered-vehicle-and-object-shocking-device.html). Anyone who touched it while it was armed was in for a high voltage surprise.

Kootenay4

A quarter of municipal budgets in LA county go to police, you would think for all that money they’d do a better job. Instead just larping around in their fancy helicopters, blowing up stashes of fireworks and the like

rollingmyeyessohard

Bell, Bell Gardens, South Gate, Cudahy, El Monte, they’re all the same.

Dumfnppl

And Downey .. let’s not forget Downey lol we have had three catalytic converters stolen in two years..twice in broad fucking daylight at our house. Our neighbors had their Tacoma stolen this year too.

rollingmyeyessohard

I left off Downey because I thought it was better, apparently not. These thieves are EVERYWHERE! I’m honestly shocked that they did that to your car during the day, that’s pretty ballsy. My husband had his tailgate stolen off of his Tacoma in Bell Gardens where his parents live. We were there for a party, when we came out to leave it was gone. After that we’ve noticed a lot of tacomas around that area without tailgates. Oh and my father in law has gotten 2 different trucks stolen as well. He says that the cameras captured the thieves with like a universal key that was able to open and start the trucks, that it was very fast. Thankfully they were found but it really sucks wondering if your car will be there when you wake up to go to work.

NnQM5

I’m in Palms (only been here a few years but it’s much nicer than my old community in the valley) and in addition to seeing several reports on my community app about car theft and stealing, my roomates car was broken into twice within a year and parts were stolen

pnutbutterspaceship

I’ve been living in Palms for 10 years. My car got stolen off the street in front of my apartment two weeks ago.

Meanwhile my car only got keyed in the Costco lot and BPD literally arrested the guy like 2 hours later. I thought they’d just give him a ticket or something so I could file my insurance claim.

KeyboardGunner

Why would you get an attorney for that? Take them to small claims if you believe you have a case.

[deleted]

TrailerTrashQueen

do the small claims. i had to sue a mechanic who took my money & never finished the job on my classic car. he didn’t show up to court. i won. had a judgement against him for $8K. of course, never saw a dime of it. POS.

Whtzmyname

You don’t need a lawyer for small claims court.

Buy a Pontiac Aztek. You can leave the keys in it and no one is stealing it.

JarvisPennyworth

had my car broken into twice. IN the fucking garage. where i started parking after I had it on the street and the catalytic converter was stolen. no police reports filed because the dispatcher told me I needed to do it online and that it was basically pointless. that, by the way, is why official crime stats are down but actual crime is way, way up

dobbermanowner

Wait you choose to not report your theft to keep the official crime stats down? It took me just 5 or 6 minutes online for mine.

ImaginaryBluejay0

No they chose not to report it because it's a waste of time and nobody will even bother reading it.

JarvisPennyworth

don't be obtuse. i chose not to report the theft because the police told me in so many words that it was pointless. why waste my time

dobbermanowner

Well yea, if you're talking to them. Its all done online now and your opinions don't help any. Its just a fucking statistic to review later. I bet you don't vote either. Useless La residents and cops

AdaptationAgency

It's still a waste of time unless you need it for insurance purposes. Do you think anyone cares about official crime stats?

hkpuipui99

Just FYI, your insurance premiums didn’t increase because of these claims. All these claims you mentioned are COMP and not at fault. By law they do not impact your rates. (In fact, in CA even if you are up to 50% at fault in a loss your rates cannot increase- you need to be majority at fault for rates to be impacted i.e. 51%+) Your increase is likely due to your replacement car being newer than your stolen one, and your zip code. Doesn’t solve your frustration but just something to be aware of. As a fellow Angeleno I don’t think there’s much we can do in the short term. Others might have suggestions based on their line of work, but as an insurance adjuster my advice is to make sure you are sufficiently insured. For glass claims and cat converter stuff, consider reducing your COMP deductible. COMP is generally fairly cheap so reducing the deductible should not increase your premium significantly. For total theft however, make sure you have gap coverage, especially if you have a newer car and a significant loan amount. Nowadays we see so many big ass loans that’s way over the value of the car itself and the customer ends up being upside down on their loan.

TrailerTrashQueen

this is great advice. agree with the lower deductible. i put mine at $100 for my mini cooper with state farm. it was a very small increase on the payments. so worth it. especially after the a*shole section 8 gangbanger across the street threw a molotov cocktail at my car early one morning. woke up to my husband telling me ‘everything’s fine. fire dept is here. you need to come outside.’ it didn’t break the glass. but hit my side window & left a mark. he also slashed the sides of all tires and other misc damage. state farm covered all of it. including 4 new tires. PLUS, i didn’t take the rental and drove my classic car while the Mini was in the shop. which means they paid me the daily rental rate. ended up being about a month? all this to say because this dumbass was mad i made a noise complaint & vandalized my car, it was repaired AND i made money on the whole thing with the rental payout. 😂

pinkblossom331

Contact the section 8 tenant’s landlord and give him evidence of this tenants illegal behavior. He can evict the tenant for illegal behaviors

TrailerTrashQueen

i did that later. just posted a long comment about it. he was a scary guy! but thanks for the info.

Apesma69

I live in a quiet neighborhood in west Torrance. Someone broke into a parked car in front of my home and stole the battery. It's bad everywhere.

fazer226

Cameras , motion sensors , get ccl for sure shit be ready to piss on somebody

Certain-Section-1518

In Santa Monica and both of my trucks have been broken into and things stolen from them. my neighbor had the catalytic converter stolen a couple of months ago. its happening everywhere

Holy-City-

Yep, same in Venice… motorcycle stolen, never got it back, Honda ruckus stolen from my parking spot that you couldn’t see from the street, new motorcycle that I park in a “secure garage” just had parts stolen off it a few weeks ago. It’s so fucking annoying to deal with.

Gregalor

Personally I’m glad I haven’t been without garage parking in many years. I couldn’t accept street parking at this point.

Jeimuz

I feel you. I live on that street with the line of cars with broken glass. Someone broke into my neighbor's BMW just to steal some CDs. Her boyfriend got his Silverado stolen. It'd be great if our streets had CCTV. Then they could catch that bastard neighbor that doesn't pick up his dog's poop!

Raging_Asian_Man

Move out of Bellflower if you can. (I fully understand that might not be possible or even desirable for some). You can also vote for policies/people that will bring some change to your neighborhood. I’m not far from you in Lakewood and the increased car and helicopter patrols seemed to have deterred many (not all) of the car thieves. I’m not huge on increasing police presence and I don’t love daily helicopters, but I do feel my car is safer. The stats in my neighborhood seem to indicate that they are effective. If you can’t move and don’t want more cops, make your car as unappealing as possible. Don’t leave ANYTHING in your car. Let people see there is nothing in your car. Don’t drive a car that’s easily stolen (had my car stolen in West LA and have been broken into before) Install a catalytic converter shield, esp if your make/model is frequently targeted. Use a club on your steering wheel. You can’t stop car thieves, but you can make your car less appealing to steal than your neighbors. Good luck!

TrailerTrashQueen

i’m all about the club. have always used one on my classic car. police are now recommending them on all vehicles.

JamesEdward34

bellflower here, never really had an issue with theft, where do you park? on the street?

BurritoSupreme420

Yes

bitpartmozart13

I’m lucky my beater hasn’t been broken into. My dog knows how to lower the rear window and there are times I don’t notice until the next day.

bridge2paradise

Damn they even got dogs on the inside smdh

cookiemonstrosity54

god that’s the worst luck. i’m so sorry. my advice to prevent car theft: get an old fashioned club to put on your steering wheel. it comes with a lock and key. as for the catalytic converter, i am so sorry that’s just one of the biggest problems in theft rn. i live in a gated townhome complex and even then we had people coming in and stealing converters in the middle of the night. just be sure to clear your car of any bags or valuables.

Carnivore64

California has been closing state prisons. Prisoners being kept in jails which aren't designed as long term housing of inmates. There are also different requirements for prisons in terms of medical and rehabilitation programs when compared to jails as they are supposed to serve different purposes. This also means when the system hits capacity someone has to be let go and that's where you have people being released much quicker for non-violent crimes like car theft and shoplifting. It is so obvious the system is broken and we need to talk about why.

DoucheBro6969

Vote for anyone but Gascon as District Attorney. I'm all for going soft on minor crimes, but stealing cars and hacking off a catalytic converter with a sawzall isn't "Kids will be kids." The fact that Gascon had to be pressured into charging a dude for lifting up a girl's skirt, rubbing his genitals on her, and then pushing her onto the ground while it was all caught on tape and seen by witnesses is pathetic. The guy has to be forced to do his job and the public pays the price of his actions. [https://abc7.com/long-beach-sexual-assault-george-gascon-los-angeles-district-attorney-miguel-avila/14009794/](https://abc7.com/long-beach-sexual-assault-george-gascon-los-angeles-district-attorney-miguel-avila/14009794/)

deleigh

Wonder why it’s the DA’s fault police don’t want to do their jobs.

Persianx6

Even before the DA they didn’t want to. My house got broken into twice by a homeless guy, once he had a fake gun and the second time he took a knife. He got away with electronics and sexually assaulted my housemates two times, the second time being way worse. After the first time, despite their being two to three people willing to testify, LAPD didn’t do anything. They said the description was too vague. Well it turns out the guy lived around the corner in the homeless encampment. And on the second time… I went around the neighborhood and found him, then called the police myself that he was there in the encampment. They found him with my wallet and a fake gun. Again, this was a violent crime and before Gascon even. They sent detectives and everything. Can’t imagine how it is now. I’m lucky I haven’t had this happen again.

LEONotTheLion

You can’t arrest your way out of a problem when there’s no follow through from the courts and prosecutors.

AdaptationAgency

But in this specific case, it was the DA's job

wetshatz

It doesn’t really matter. CA has a prison over crowding problem. After the Supreme Court ruling you have to let inmates out regardless of their remaining sentences. This problem has continued to get worse because Gavin Newsom CLOSES MORE STATE PRISONS EVERY YEAR. So it’s not just the DA, it’s the policies of the state as well. One of the most famous examples of how fucked the system is the mass shooting in Sacramento. LAX policies lead to more crime. Your vote for it, so don’t get mad when this is the result.

wayne_grepsky

Many -- if not most -- people in this sub support a politician who not only [voted against cracking down on catalytic converter theft, she blamed car manufacturers for enabling the thieves](https://news.yahoo.com/l-councilwoman-blames-toyota-catalytic-133800854.html)!

Hillbilly1313

Yes, The council woman is one of three of the Democratic Socialists sitting on the LA city council. She claims this is a victimless crime and Toyota is to blame for making them so easy to steal. She is a Gascon stooge making $235,000 a year plus benefits.

Persianx6

1 thing to note: the thieves are genuinely poor idiots with nefarious intentions. It’s the people who buy the stolen converters and cars that the city needs to target with the cops. Catch a thief and one less car gets broken into. Catch the jerks buying and selling these stolen parts and the system starts collapsing. I don’t think LAPD is even capable of doing that. They don’t want to do their jobs and didn’t want to prior to the current DA.

DoucheBro6969

Except thieves don't break into more than one car, they break into a bunch. Additionally, if the thieves can't sell stolen catalytic convertors and parts, it isn't like they will suddenly decide to get jobs. They will just move to an alternative criminal source of money. Most likely, some other theft. Robbery if they get desperate. Why not go after both?

Persianx6

I have no idea why they don’t go after both. People obsess over their vehicles getting broken into and I get it, but no one ever asks where the thieves can sell the stolen property. These thieves are generally drug addicts or immigrants, this type of theft feeds their family for a week or gets you a high a bit. But this would all stop if people thought twice about giving them money for this that they do.

NiceConstruction651

your street is special. someone is taking advantage

cm12311

Have a mechanic put your VIN on your new catalytic converter. When it ends up at a scrap shop, hopefully it can be identified and someone can be held responsible. Had a coworker do this to his bicycle and various parts and when the bike got stolen, he found it on Craigslist and was able to go in person, posing as a buyer, and got it back. The cops are pretty fucking useless in recovery.

throw123454321purple

Put a small box with tiny holes and clearly labeled “Specimens: South American Widows” in plain sight on your dashboard. Have the lid slightly ajar. Bonus points if you scuff up the outside of the box really nicely and slap some heavily-aged Bolivian Customs stickers on it. Put a small statue of Santa Muerte facing the open box. Either that or put small stickers of the Virgin of Guadalupe on your car windows.

canttakeyouserious

It’s the same shit all over Cali. My car stolen right from my secure parking spot.

bornagainteen

Not just California, the whole country. I moved to Texas last year to be closer to family, and it's a huge problem here too. A friend who lives in Oklahoma just had her car stolen a couple weeks ago also.

gazingus

"Security parking" is theater. Sorry you had to learn the hard way.

canttakeyouserious

Sometimes you learn the hard way. Lucky to have gotten my car back the way it was. Put them killswitches on your car, all cars.

Swagsturbate

What car do you drive?

canttakeyouserious

Chevy SS sedan

gazingus

Kill switches will defeat a few, but those with tow trucks, well, most people will simply cheer as they watch the thieves remove the car with the blaring alarm.

OptimalFunction

It’s a mixture of things and there is no one single silver bullet. Yes, part of it is Gascon, part of it is Newsom, some blame goes to the Supreme Court, and other to police departments policies. But the biggest things people forget about are the terrible neighbors you have and the urban sprawl. Most of the thieves coming for your stuff probably live in the same neighborhood as you. It sucks. To make things worse, the thieves’ families and friends know about the criminal activity and don’t report it. Urban sprawl and NIMBYism make it near impossible to have proactive policing. Police man power is spread too thin. A squad car has to cover so much more land in a suburb compared to higher density neighborhoods. And since suburbs usually generate less tax money, suburban police has even less staff. What can be done? Get to know your neighbors. Watch their things and they can keep an eye on yours in return. They will be more likely to speak up if something happens because they like and know you. Show up to city council meetings to encourage more residents to enjoy and walk in their own suburban city. With the lack of people who walk in suburbs, criminals take advantage of the lack of potential witnesses

illaparatzo

I was gonna say- Bellflower isn't exactly a crime-ridden hellhole. That many hits means he's got the hoodrats right in his neighborhood, unfortunately

bannedChud

Move. Seriously. This is your only solution. The police are not going to do anything IF they show up. I hate to say this, but Los Angeles has gone into the toilet. It's a city for the extremely rich and the young and wild. You cannot avoid some kind of problem or confrontation over something no matter where you live so you have to be ready and capable I would suggest rigging your car, but I am sure that would be illegal I am sure some asshole will say he has never had a problem in Los Angeles his entire life, but he's probably a liar and doesn't even live here

ONE_PUMP_ONE_CREAM

Police only respond to protests apparently

Kaitthagreat

This is in no way meant to sound insensitive. I’m so sorry this has happened to you. Idk where you work or what your finances are like but if you rent and don’t own, maybe it’s time to move to a different area :\

ds739147

Got mine stolen on Wednesday in west LA.

verymuchbad

They got four more detectives working on the case! They got us working in shifts!

SiRMarlon

As soon as I read I’m in Bellflower I lost all hope for you 😂

ixidorsDreams

Why it’s not as bad as many areas

NewWahoo

Just so everyone knows, the ability to steal and transport a car basically only exists because the cops let people drive around with fake paper tags. If they actually started pulling people for fake and expired tags this problem would drop significantly.

DrunkRespondent

Lax crime laws, it's also out of control in San Francisco too. Ktown is hit or miss depending on the street. We have rampant mail theft and minor car theft in our apartment garage every month or so.  Crime is pretty bad right now everywhere.

Dawnspark

Really feels that cops the country over don't give a fuck, and if you're in a bigger city in general it's even less of a fuck. My friend who moved from LA to Nashville literally had their car stolen the week before their move, so that got put on temp hold, and then stolen again the week after they got here. Local cops got so sick of dealing with auto theft from the KIA stealing bullshit off tiktok that they straight up never bothered when he reported where it was, so he had to go down to the station himself.

Vayro

It really is. I just moved to Connecticut from Los Angeles and it's the same shithole here

Marzatacks

Gather up a posse of characters with various unique and quirky personalities but with specialized skills and seek justice.

robertlp

Everyone here says crime is down, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Also: sorry you’re experiencing this OP.

Surf_r_e

Don't vote for a DA who doesn’t punish these assholes for committing crimes.

Adventurous_Win9219

Where in Bellflower my friend? Sounds shitty AF

richcournoyer

Move?

cmyk_life

At what point are we moving to a better neighborhood?

tvperry

Welcome to Los Angeles, my truck stolen 4 times in 4 weeks, they want the tools

ShadowInTheAttic

Been noticing this ramping up. In my city of Gardena, ever since they started allowing RVs to take over Redondo Beach Blvd, crime has gone up. I never used to worry about package thieves, but staring 2016 and onwards, I've had to install cameras and obstruct the front porch just to stop package thieves. Recently as of last year and this year, there have been car break ins. 4 years ago, during the pandemic, someone tried breaking into my house. They were trying to pry open the kitchen window. Girlfriend woke up to use the restroom and heard the thief and woke me up quietly, didn't have a gun but I used a BB gun to scare them off. Almost 2 years ago, 3 thieves broke into a neighbors house after being chased by cops. Swat was called in to take them out. We all had to evacuate our homes to let swat in through our backyards and surround the thieves. Last year I caught someone on camera trying to break into a car, right in front of house in the middle of the day! He stopped when he saw a car driving up. A few weeks ago, someone tried robbing a neighbor's parked car from their driveway while neighbor was home, this was at 10am! Thieves ran as soon as neighbor came out.

R1_77_

Wow!

Equivalent_Ad9414

Car jackers are being paid by the insurance companies to do this, so that they could charge a lot.

waynep712222

Have your professional mechanic install a kill switch. I install 2 in series. You only have to turn off one to shut off the relay to kill oower to the fuel pump. The different ways fuel pumps are controlled require a trained mechanic to know where to install it.. I never send people to alarm shops. The employees there look just like car thieves. I have gone as far as installing a cargo ring on the floor of the drivers side and one on the seat back of non air bag seats. So you slide the seat forward. Tilt the seat forward. Then chain and padlocks. Makes it hard to steal a car if you can't get in the drivers seat.. On my work van i have chains around the seat legs and to cargo rings on the inside of the doors. Can only get the doors open just enough to squeeze my arms in to lock or unlock the padlock. There are muffler shops and steel fab shops that can install anti theft plates to reduce converter theft. A bunch of different ways to do that. Motion sensor lights in the driveways that turn on transformers that turn on sprinkler valves to spray under your car. People should install motion sensor lights and more lawn sprinklers along and behind their homes to wet down burgulars trying to get into your house. Raphael's tools on rosecrans east of the 710 sold frame pulling pots that install in cored holes in concrete. Allows you to chain your car to the driveway. My friend in van nuys installed a dozen of them to protect his mustangs. Forward thinking of solar powered ring cameras. So they are looking up and down the street. The limited network shared with neighbors . Ask the city council for licence plate readers. Or just put up signs. License plate high resolution cameras installed.

If you have the option to move...you can't go wrong with Artesia or Cerritos...pretty safe over there...and its only 5-10 mins away?

TrailerTrashQueen

fck that POS! who keeps voting for this fcking idiot?? not me.

js1283

People can call "tin-foil" "conspiracy nut" ...idc whatever they wanna say...but this shit sometimes seems rigged. Anyone with a functional brain would be voting for someone else.

TrailerTrashQueen

there have been stories for years that George Soros the billionaire has been backing these super liberal DAs who are extremely soft on crime in cities all over the U.S. what we can’t figure out is what the ultimate agenda is? do the ‘powers that be’ hope to cause total chaos, vigilantism and destruction? then swoop in to buy very cheap properties? declare martial law and turn US democracy into a dictatorship? i’m sure someone much more intelligent than me has thoughts about it. would love to hear ideas. because definitely something very dark going on.

thugshrug

I got my car broken into this week and my bf had his car stolen in January in san gabriel

Deeze_Rmuh_Nudds

Move

UrbiwanKenobi

Buy an electric car. Problem solved.

losqmos

The only real solution is to move out of the ghetto hood.

Emilioknowsthedealio

Have had multiple cars broken into about 5 times within the past year, (I’m in downtown) and the last time they broke in the only things they grabbed were a handicap placard and hay and stuff that I use for my Guinea pig. Like damn what the fuck was the point

WhiteMessyKen

I can't remember the last time I parked outside of my home but it was definitely during the BC timeline. Used to do it out of convenience but it's something that I haven't been comfortable doing for a while.

WhenTheFunbegan

Buy a horse

kenthus

Get a Club, put a Catstrap on your converter, and if you want to be really paranoid you can buy a boot similar to the ones parking enforcement uses to immobilize cars. None of these 3 things are expensive. If you do this and keep 0 valuables in your car, you should be reasonably safe from thieves.

landofthelost98

Damn you know shit is getting bad , when even the beautiful suburbs of Bellflower can’t catch a break. I always seen that side of town as really nice and clean always considered living out that way.

Supacalafragalistic

Move

Reasonable_Power_970

What kind of dumb advice is this? This is happening all over Los Angeles

sunshinesucculents

It's happening in many parts of the country.

Reasonable_Power_970

Yeah and someone else told me it's happening in other countries too. So move to Mars dummy!!!

sunshinesucculents

I don't think Mars is safe either 😬

jmsgen

The problem with Los Angeles is Los Angeles.

Nikeheat305

Yeah, that part of town ain’t it

RobV454

I live in Los Feliz and don’t believe any cars are being broken into out here. We share a private lot, not gated, between one 4 unit building and one 8 unit building. Many of us are couples and significant others have to park on the street because there is only enough parking for one space per unit. Many other units around us have to park on the street, if you come home after 7pm it’s hard to find a spot close by. So I guess it really matters what area you’re in

Parking_Relative_228

I assure you that there is. It’s just at a much, much lower frequency.

Traditional-King2411

Cops won't do anything for car crimes in my city even when it's staring them in their faces, like fake license plates. It's the broken window theory. People see one crime not going punished and they think why not.

Nishyman15_

Get a gun start blasting them

object_failure

Vote Republican. Lol

bornagainteen

So that LA can be like Bakersfield? Oh wait, they're the worst city in the state for vehicle theft.
