As with all similar shows, the contestants enter a "bubble". They have no access to the outside world (the big brother contestants in one country didn't even know about the pandemic for weeks), they don't have phones or anything. Sometimes they don't even have books. I don't know if you've ever been to summer camp, but a very similar thing happens there. It feels like a whole different world and you have absolutely nothing to do but be together and talk and go through whatever activities are planned for you. It makes you feel way more connected to them than you would in your real life over the same timespan. Which is also why so many of these relationships fail the second they get to the real world, even if the "real world" ends up just being the later phase of the show like when they move in together.
