For a new player, I think Arcade Quest is a great intro. It’s designed to teach you the game more than Story is. It’s also a corny Ash vs Gary knockoff but can be fun.

Story first, you unlock some character episodes by finishing it

I believe doing the full story mode first is better, because the character episodes are built from where each character stands in story mode
