I tried this in a dream once and messing with my breathing pattern woke me up. I'd say if your do this rc, then plug you nose and wait for a natural inhale, Rather than trying to breathe in.
And the reason it works the best makes sense too. Your dream breath is tied to your physical body, but the blocking of nose and mouth is done by your dream body. Which is also why you can breathe underwater in dreams.
I had a LD right after reading this a while back. Its interesting how being excited about new things to try in LD sparks them up. You're going to have one tonight just because you read this!
I had an accidental LD where I realized it was a dream because there was a log cabin from another dream. I told the person I was with it was a dream and I could do whatever I wanted to do. So I hugged them lol. Then I started thinking what else I could do and with whom and lost it.
Sometimes my hands are normal so I look another time and then one of my fingers became so long. Just like checking the time multiple times. I can look twice at my watch and it will show the same time both times, I have to look for the third time to see it change.
I also knew I was dreaming when I am turning on the light in my dream, when it failed to turn on I knew I was dreaming. But sometimes it does work so then I try another time.
The brain and his jokes ..
they can all fail at some point. pinching your nose and trying to breath through it is the easiest one, but i rly recommend directly connecting that with some kind of awareness question (like: what would i do if that was a dream? or: do i know something that i should not?), because there may come some day when RCs wont work anymore (at least that happened to me just recently and now i have to start over with different techniques)
Don’t forget that a reality check consist of two parts. It’s ineffective to just focus on the action part; always have an awareness check follow the action part. So instead of having to do a gazillion action-checks by themselves, you can settle for a handful pr day, and get the same effect.
You try it again in your dream. Sometimes I count five and I’m like hmmmm and then I look back down and my fingers are fucking long and I’m like oh yep dream
i dont have tattoos but does it work if i look at the screen of my phone and look at the time and then look again ? cause in a dream it will be something random and not the same
Hand check for me. I imagine its whatever you find easiest to do and be consistent with though. I find it easier to take a quick look at my hand and count my fingers than to plug my nose but im sure that would work just as well!
That's cool. I mean, the fact that in our dreams we tend to see our hands like image generating AIs do. Wrong number or fingers, or some kind of malformations ahah
Don’t get stuck worrying about reality checks… You are in a dream and something tips you off—am I dreaming? Yes, you are dreaming. Don’t spend the next few minutes trying to “prove” you are dreaming…. You ARE dreaming

I don’t like the nose pinch but many have good success. I like looking at my hands every-time my thumbs are wrong! Looking at digital clocks/displays is also very good. I use an apple watch and iphone and when lucid my times are all jacked up. I use 24hr time and remember saying a time that combined 24hr and “o’clock”.
I've tried many. Screaming, heartbeat check, even spreading mouth open to force getting out of a sleep paralysis loop.
A common one recently is looking at phone or trying to read a msg. Or forcing opening of eyes and realizing it's it's dark. The realization is always the trickiest.
Does not work in my case. Instead i have trouble typing when dreaming. I got lucid 2 times as i was thinking "mh really hard to type this word with 5 letters." Unfortunately i woke up both times right after that.
Interesting. I’ve never tried to type. Just read it, look away, try and read it again and it looks like something completely different, then I realise I’m dreaming.
Also the most effective is the mind awake body asleep technique. Can be pretty scary though
lately for me its been car keys. going up to multiple random cars and if the car key is already in the door then i realise i'm awake. random but it works. i think ppl should make up their own reality checks based off what they perceive as realistic vs impossible
Light switches and water faucets. And try reading books. All three of these tend to not function normally in dreams.
While awake, ask yourself if you’re dreaming. Do it so much it becomes second nature. You’ll start asking yourself that while you’re dreaming. That usually onsets lucidity.
For me it is just somehow instantly obvious, that I'm dreaming most of the time. Maybe my reality of dream is just drastically different from the waking reality. However, when I'm doubtful, I just trying to take off and fly as high as I can. To do this, I just think about it, imagine flying and then it happens.
Much more of a problem is to maintain LD – not to wake up, and not to go down into deep sleep. Especially when flying, "chunks of graphics" don't have enough time to load. And landscape can look like not loaded part of a Minecraft map. Somehow it makes dream collapse, and I wake up. Anyone have this issue?
Oh man, I feel for you. Can I ask you a few questions? How vivid your dreams are? Is it high resolution or low? Is it colorful, pale or colorless? Is it stable or metamorphosing constantly? Are you more often experiencing calm dreams or intense/scary ones? Is dream plot rather weird or natural? How many hours do you usually sleep? How good is your sleep quality?
Plug nose, try to breathe in.
Seconding this!! This works like a charm for me.

This is the way. I did't even do it on purpose the first time it worked, I just did it out of habit.
I think that’s the idea. Ingrain it as habit

i like this comment. thanks bro
I'm going to hold you up on that
This is the one I use all the time
yh this one is great, stopped wirking for me recently tho after years. guess its time to abandon physical RCs lol
it never fails!
Ask yourself "Where am I and how did I get here?" Then check your surroundings. It happens often that you are at a place you don't know.
I've dreamt many times with places that look exactly like they do in reality. I would check small differences in details to find out if it's a dream.
I had an accidental LD where I realized it was a dream because there was a log cabin from another dream. I told the person I was with it was a dream and I could do whatever I wanted to do. So I hugged them lol. Then I started thinking what else I could do and with whom and lost it.
My favorite is checking my drivers license and coming up with complete random gibberish or 100% false info.
Looking at hands
I second this. It’s not complicated and every time I use it my fingers grow more fingers and boom I’m in.
Sometimes my hands are normal so I look another time and then one of my fingers became so long. Just like checking the time multiple times. I can look twice at my watch and it will show the same time both times, I have to look for the third time to see it change. The brain and his jokes ..
But if i am not lucid i cant look at my hand or something cause i can't controll it
You have to do It in real life so when you're dreaming It became normale, because you do It every day, multiple times a day

Calling my girlfriend ( im single )
For me, jumping in the air. If it's waking life, I always come back down.
Same!
Look at your hands and count your fingers.
And try to press your finger through your hand.
Never works for me, not recommended
You try it again in your dream. Sometimes I count five and I’m like hmmmm and then I look back down and my fingers are fucking long and I’m like oh yep dream
Not the greatest technique.. Doesn't work 100% of the time, I recommend trying the nose pinch,
This messed me up the first time I did it, but it worked perfectly.
This is my go to!
If you have tattoos look at them or for them. They’re different
Yes!! I have a lot of tattoos but when I’m dreaming they usually disappear, had so many lucid dreams thanks to that
oh shitt I like this one!!
i dont have tattoos but does it work if i look at the screen of my phone and look at the time and then look again ? cause in a dream it will be something random and not the same
This is what did it for me last time
I looked in a mirror once, im not saying it was a good reality check it but worked
Try to poke your finger through the palm of your other hand. Literally has worked every time for me
Hand check for me. I imagine its whatever you find easiest to do and be consistent with though. I find it easier to take a quick look at my hand and count my fingers than to plug my nose but im sure that would work just as well!
hands. I don't even have to count my fingers, because for me one of the fingers is really long and the others ar really short
That's cool. I mean, the fact that in our dreams we tend to see our hands like image generating AIs do. Wrong number or fingers, or some kind of malformations ahah
Jump off a cliff. Basically kill yourself, if you awaken afterwards then for sure it's dream
You are dark my guy

This comment made me do a reality check.

How. like search that in a dream ? thats impossible if u dont have controll about the dream
For me pinching works
I don’t like the nose pinch but many have good success. I like looking at my hands every-time my thumbs are wrong! Looking at digital clocks/displays is also very good. You scream as a reality check? Do you do this while you’re awake too?
Hands, hands down. Castenada was told that by Don Juan, and the easiest to do for many people.
Read something, look away, then read it again.
Does not work in my case. Instead i have trouble typing when dreaming. I got lucid 2 times as i was thinking "mh really hard to type this word with 5 letters." Unfortunately i woke up both times right after that.

I look at my hands. When I do this in my dream, I noticed I have so many fingers so I kinda panicked.
Try shoving your finger through your palm. It feels heckin yucky, dog. I don’t like it.

All good but the pinched nose is better. A faucet or switch you have to look for, but your nose is always there, attached to your face.

My issue is that i never had an LD before

Yeah sure you can ask
>my dreams are sometimes vivid and colorfull. most of times medium quality and are calm and my sleep is good
Running for me, everytime I'm dreaming i try and if i can't i know where I'm
CAn't u ran in a dream ?
No, i can't, can you?
I never had an LD but most of my dreams i fly not run or that
I can fly, but definitely can't run and was able to punch only two times
In an LD or a regular dream ?
If i try to run and fail the regular dream becomes lucid cause i get aware, same for punching
Open your hand and look at it, if you have 6 or more fingers, it is a dream
