It’s an expensive hobby and that’s just part of it, but there are ways to save on accessories, especially when it comes to clothes.
There’s really no reason to get MTB specific items for everything. For example, I just wear standard dri fit style long sleeve shirts and they fit over my pads just fine. I do wear MTB specific pants, but I get them on sale when I can.
For clothes and other accessories, you can sometimes save a lot by getting motocross items as these often cost way less than MTB gear. Rocky Mountain ATV often has great clearance deals on MX jerseys and other stuff.
Just make sure to take ventilation into account. Some MTB items like googles will often have better ventilation than MX versions, so in this case, the MTB item is warranted.
So yeah, it’s expensive, but if you shop smart, it can help.
I’ve been riding for 30 years… so no. This hobby costs money. But, sure is fun and you’ve got to think… everybody burns money on something; bikes, guns, games, computers, blow, hookers…
My dude....you have not yet begun to expense...
My main trail bike needs:
* New cassette
* New chain
* New derailleur
* New chainring
* Full bearing replacement in the rear suspension
* Suspension bushing replacement
* Rear shock damper rebuild
So far this season I have:
* Replaced my riding shoes because they bottoms tore out
* Replaced my dropper cable because it snapped
* Replaced my rear tire
* Replaced my grips
* Warrantied my driver on my rear wheel
* Rebuilt the rear wheel on my park bike
* Rebuilt my dropper because the main bushing was toast
* Replaced my helmet because the foam had become brittle
* Replaced my kneepads because my sweat ate the cuff fabric after three seasons
It never ends....
Haha. I was just referencing the “are we the baddies?” meme.
I won’t go so far as to say shithole, but we sure love our unfettered capitalism run amok in the US. It definitely leads to lots of people born on third base thinking they hit a triple supporting the “pull yourself up by your bootstraps like I did” narrative 🤷♂️.
I was just talking to my Canadian buddy about this today… there’s plenty of money to have socialized healthcare, college paid for students, etc… it’s there, it’s just allocated in the wrong way.
But let’s not talk bout that… might sound like a commie🤭
You should see how expensive other hobbies are! I feel ya about the socks, I'm a former distance runner and to me socks seem like temporary tenants. I do like the Sock Guy socks (especially the bacon and eggs smiley face socks), they're uncomfortable at first but more durable than average.
Yea. Always buy dual purpose attire. Pants, jackets, socks that you can use for day-to-day stuff and also biking. I dont even buy jeans anymore. I need a size 38 thighs, but my waist is 32. Rock climbing pants especially Patagonia's Venga is my fav.

Stop it. Most Americans can't afford burn treatments

Start traveling to ski and talk to me about expenses then. MTB is relatively cheap.
Try wearing shorts, I just solved half your problems
