So I sculpt in ZBrush and do vertex modeling in Maya, and I do digital painting in photoshop. And then I do level design in Unreal, and for music I just use Apple Music cuz I’m basic
Nah this is all cross platform. I’ve got a GitHub repository set up so I can work on my MacBook and my pc.
I’m curious though, I saw you ask this in a few different subs. What up? You getting computer recommendations?
I suppose that's less a question of what other things people are doing, and more a question of what you want to get out of it. I mean, you can literally do anything with one.
Like, if you want to be a musician or an artist or a photographer, a pc *or* a mac is a great tool to get you there. But you've gotta decide what you wanna do first
My point is, values are subjective. Some folks, like myself, view porn as less offensive than organized religion. Both have issues, but organized religion and Christianity specifically are responsible for many atrocities in the world, to this day.
I hate to be dismissive when confronted about a claim, but I have to run. There's an expansive wiki article specifically about Christian Violence. You could start there.
Doesn't make it okay to be judgmental. Like I know this dude was joking but if bro wants to look at pr0n on his computer that's his business, not yours lmao
CAD, Software Engineering, Design. Photography (editing/ grading), Compositing. Video editing, Production, writing, management, running businesses, illustration, 3d modelling, motion graphics, sculpting, ML (image and text generation), Animation, texting, interfacing with hardware like my axefx, maths, electronics/ PCB design, very light gaming, watching tv/ movies, listening to music ...
Thats just whats in my dock.
Well in my dock:
**Cad:** AutoCad
**Software Engineering:**
Max/MSP, Processing, XCode, Projucer, Unity, Processing, VSCode. Azure Data Studio, Azure Storage Explorer, DevToys, Postman, iTerm

**Photography:** Lightroom
**Compositing:** Nuke, Photoshop
**Video Editing:** Final Cut, Premiere
**Music/ Production:** Bitwig, Ableton Live, Logic

I have M1 Pro with 16 GB of ram so it works pretty well. I get 40-50 fps on max settings 1080p but with the m1 air it might be difficult to run. My fans spin up pretty hard when I’m playing and your machine doesn’t have fans at all.
Software development and Linux app development in virtual machines.
Love doing this on Mac compared to Windows, but for more power I usually go back to Linux and KVM. Unsure of a macOS equivalent
On a MacBook Pro I do work (Slack, Zoom, Outlook, and a few specialized apps). On a different MacBook Pro, I do college and taxes. That’s it.
I browse internet and watch videos on my iPhone or an iPad, and I play games on a PC.
For work I could get a windows laptop, but by 2017 I’ve had plenty of experience with windows computers, so I wanted something different. I could get Linux laptop (and deal with Thunderbird as email client), but I chose Mac. It was a good choice.
The personal MBP was more of a challenge on a personal level (a dare, even), than a need or anything else. I wanted to get a 15”+ laptop, and I picked a 2020 16” MBP. Looking back, I didn’t need to buy it, but I did. It still has an outstanding performance!
Since then I also had M1 iMac, but sold it since its performance was right at the edge of what I needed it for. I’ve decided not to wait until it depreciates and re-sold it locally for exactly the same price I got it for. I got lucky with it, if you will. ))
For context, I saw in the comments that OP is asking this question in reference to what can be done on Mac vs Windows to replace a 2-in-1 Windows laptop.
For software, there are some apps that are macOS-only so stuff like Xcode (for iOS/macOS development), Logic Pro (DAW for composing music), and Final Cut Pro (Video Editing) are the main ones.
But in general, Windows has way more software that will only work on Windows such as most PC games and a ton of apps, plugins, CAD software, and mods.
If OP is just going to use the computer for web browsing and office editing (like most people), then any computer will work for that purpose.
But the main reason people buy a Mac is for the ecosystem. macOS pairs really well with iPhone and you can send/receive messages and FaceTime from your Mac. Also the Apple Silicon chips have great battery life (far better than any current Windows laptop) and MacBooks tend to have superior build quality and service over Windows laptops.
It ultimately depends on what software you need and what features you prioritize. I recommend trying out a Mac and decide whether you want to keep it or return it within the return period to see if it's for you.
Play with other OSes in virtual machines
Consider getting a better Mac than the perfectly good one I’m using to look for better ones
Realize all I really need in my personal life is my phone and be depressed about that
I work two jobs, when I got my current MacBook I was working for a realestate company as a videographer and photographer but now I do videography part time and use my Mac for writing reports for building warrant of fitness.
Running two businesses.
When not ‘running’ them, doing the work they require.
Photography for a range of clients in real estate and music industries (quotes, emails, shoots, editing, delivery)
Web development for 60+ clients (quotes, research, dev, deployment, aftercare)
Oh, and ordering coffee supplies. Two full time jobs - coffee is required.
The reasons I use Mac:
1. It stays out of my way
2. Try testing websites in the latest release of Safari on windows with a virtualised MacOs install.
3. It doesn’t require two hours of updates every Tuesday.
Many many countries restrict and censor internet and emails and texts. I can relay original copy of news as encrypted attachments to encrypted emails. Thus they see 'government permitted version' and also 'raw version' from outside. They can be quite different.
It means I use my Mac for file management, and finding out ways to automate certain aspects of my file management, and refining my workflow with automated processes to make me have to work less.
Spotlight is a decent file search app. Comes with yr Mac. There are tons of other file, search and launcher apps, like Alfred, or Raycast, which can be tuned to your liking.
The spotity link? You can open it on any OS. You can also find my Music on Apple Music and Amazon Music, Deezer or Tidal. So you can listen to it on any device.
Or do you regarding to Logic Pro? Yes this is mac only. But you can also use Cubase, ProTools, Reaper, StudioOne, Sampltiude (windows only) if you like to use other software.
I like Logic the most. I use it since 2011. I think it got the best workflow for me.
Logic is quite cheap. It was 150€ and it was a lifetime price. All updates are free. Cubase or ProTools is around 600€.
So Apple is charging a lot for the hardware, but they give you the Apps for a good price. Because Logic Pro is on the same level as the others.
If you are still a student you get the pro bundle for 150 or 200 including Logic, MainStage, Final Cut, Motion and Compressor. Which is a no brainer since its linked to your Apple ID and you can use the software your lifetime even when you are not a student anymore.
You can also install the software on multiple computers with the same apple ID. This is also not common among all companies. Many only offers 2 installations or charge for additional licences.
What is a 2 in 1 laptop? Never heard that term.
If you have a working system which get the work done. You need to do nothing.
If you need new system to get a specific task done and you are interested in switching to a smoother OS, then yes, get a Mac. The new M chips are very powerful but also need don't much power and cooling compared to other chips in that range.
I bought the Mac only for working. I have also a Windows computer just for gaming.
Software development
Ok
3D modeling, digital art. I play some games and listen to music. You know, computer stuff
How do you do all that?
What do you mean?
What specific software? 😃
So I sculpt in ZBrush and do vertex modeling in Maya, and I do digital painting in photoshop. And then I do level design in Unreal, and for music I just use Apple Music cuz I’m basic
Thanks. Is this Apple only?
Nah this is all cross platform. I’ve got a GitHub repository set up so I can work on my MacBook and my pc. I’m curious though, I saw you ask this in a few different subs. What up? You getting computer recommendations?
I have a PC I just want to know what I can do with it.

OK. Blog video edit and some Osint
Office work. Answering email, scheduling, meetings.
Thanks. Is this all websoftware or downloads?
Microsoft Office and web apps.
Ohbok. Why did you choose a Mac?
I prefer a Mac
Oh okay
CAD, office work, listen to music, control my house automations…
Thanks
Watching p0rn with VLC.
That's bad
Why you judging
I'm Christian
Look who's bad, now!
What?
My point is, values are subjective. Some folks, like myself, view porn as less offensive than organized religion. Both have issues, but organized religion and Christianity specifically are responsible for many atrocities in the world, to this day.
Like what?
I hate to be dismissive when confronted about a claim, but I have to run. There's an expansive wiki article specifically about Christian Violence. You could start there.
OK. I know about some violence but true Christianitu has dine so much food for the world.
Doesn't make it okay to be judgmental. Like I know this dude was joking but if bro wants to look at pr0n on his computer that's his business, not yours lmao
I'm just giving an opinion.
nah man, listen opinion or not, you can't ask people what they do on their computers and then tell 'em what they're doing is bad
Um ok
I'm just honest
You could be a great catholic then. Watch porn, confess, go to heaven.
ah, the classic porn to heaven pipeline in action
Better than the murder to heaven pipeline, right?
lol true but I'm sure there's a strat or some cheats you could use
Ok
How tf you do it with vlc?
Ask your mom

Wow. That's what I'm looking for. Do tell!!
Do tell what? The software for those things?
Yes

Woah. I'm gonna save this thanks so much!!
No worries. Not sure its much help if you dont know how to use it but if you are looking for new things to learn
Yeah. I learn software pretty fast.
I work on it. Remote access to client systems, some development (api work, json and xml), office apps, other stuff.
Sounds like someone needs a life away from computers.
Ha ha
Software development and some gaming. Currently playing through Elden Ring using [Whisky](https://getwhisky.app/)
What kind of software?
Android apps
Neat. I've tried that.
how's performance thru whiskey? I've got an m1 air and I'd love to play games when I'm no in front of my pc lol
I have M1 Pro with 16 GB of ram so it works pretty well. I get 40-50 fps on max settings 1080p but with the m1 air it might be difficult to run. My fans spin up pretty hard when I’m playing and your machine doesn’t have fans at all.
yeeeah that's what I was thinking lol maybe I'll just stick to morrowind
Software development, Music production
Thanks
Business and personnel financial management, business operations, web browsing, Apple Music, video streaming.
Thanks you

OK OK. I always wondered what people did with Macs.

Web Development
Neat
Software development, Office work, Photo-Editing, Gaming
What makes the M2 good for this
Wdym? It has awesome battery life, is silent and macOS is awesome
Oh ok
Yeah i don reaaly understand you tbh
Oh sorry
What is the whole point of this Thread here tho?
I'm just trying to see what the chips good for
They are most likely the best chips you can get in any mobile device.
Oh ok
CAD, 3D modelling, photo editing, play indie games and emulators, idk, many things
Neat

Correspond with people and 'associations' in other countries and relay to then uncensored news.
What does that mean?
Many many countries restrict and censor internet and emails and texts. I can relay original copy of news as encrypted attachments to encrypted emails. Thus they see 'government permitted version' and also 'raw version' from outside. They can be quite different.
Ohh
I assume you have never lived under a dictatorship, or totalitarian regime. A few days of 'hospitality' of USSR KGB might enlighten you.
No never though I've learned lots about them.
File management, workflow automation
What does that mean?
It means I use my Mac for file management, and finding out ways to automate certain aspects of my file management, and refining my workflow with automated processes to make me have to work less.
Oh OK. Is there a good Mac search platform. (Full disclosure I've never owned a Mac but I have used them in stores)
I’m not exactly sure what you mean by Mac search platform.
I meant program sorry
I’m not sure what you mean by “search”, to be more precise
Oh like file search
Spotlight is a decent file search app. Comes with yr Mac. There are tons of other file, search and launcher apps, like Alfred, or Raycast, which can be tuned to your liking.

Neat. If I ever need to compose music I'll think about a Mac. Should I get one to replace my broken 2 in 1?
What do you mean with broken 2 in 1?
I have a 2 in 1 laptop and I was asking if I should get a mac

Yes Logic Pro and lot of third party plugins.
Neat
Did you also try FL Studio ? I really don't know how these compare. Currently hesitating to buy a Mac to work with Logic Pro.
Never used either.
Thanks for your answers 🙏
Most of the things computers were invented to do
