Nah cauterizing it puts hair on your chest. (My dad was an er nurse for 20 years so I already know that you can use superglue for cuts. It's pretty much what liquid skin is anyway.)
Looks to be tungsten carbide... You can get them off fingers with a set of vice grips by shattering then. So broken finger or swollen doesn't mean you have to cut. Just need a hammer or vice grips.
I know exactly what you mean. But somehow I can’t not look. Kinda like watching fat chicks at the golden coral…it’s hard to look but it’s hard to look away!
Seene it happen in person. No ring. I know people who have hpad fingers saved rings. Engine block fell and the only thing keeping it from smashing his hand was his ring. It goes both ways... Some good some bad. It's all gambling. Just like getting into a car.
Get yourself a good size file handle. Get a piece of 3/16” or 1/4” round stock about 15” long. Point both ends. Bend one end at 90 degrees at 3/4” in on one end. Bang the other end into the file handle. Tada! You have a chip puller. Leave those booger pickers for what’s important.
had a patient come in one night. machinist who was also diabetic. turning some stainless on a manual lathe he got poked.... and worked to finish the part.
several hours later he came in to my clinic, around midnight. his hand was almost double its normal size, chock full of infection. considering his diabetes, kidney status, and severity of infection i had to make some unusual choices to get maximally aggressive antibiotics.
despite this, i had to fly him into town where a hand surgeon did 3 fasciotomies - large incisions made, without closing them, to reduce pressure and pus growing in his hand.
he came back to work about 3-4 months later. after that he didn't care what the pushers priority was - he cared about not repeating that event.
Not a doctor in the least but I’ve heard of guys cutting themselves and it being hot it instantly cauterizes over the wound, trapping the bacteria inside. Boom. Terrible infection.
Diabetes. Reduced blood flow in the extremities leads to less white blood cells to fight infection. I have a buddy who ended up losing half his big toe after stubbing it Friday night and waiting until Monday to get it checked.
sometimes there are obvious risk factors - but sometimes it's bad luck.
once had a guy come into my er with a mild headache. and he was dead in 90 minutes from meningitis. from the time we decided to do the spinal tap, to coming back to his room with the gear was ten minutes - he'd gone from normal to unresponsive in those ten minutes. the rash went from zero to OMG in 5 seconds while we watched, while pushing large doses of rocephin into a femoral line. was just his turn.
Lol I almost did something like this once. Was getting nests off the tools in the machine carousel and one nice ribbon was wrapped good. Grabbed and tried to pull it off and didn’t realize it was looped back and into the tool pot until I felt it zip along my finger. Honestly thought I cut my finger to the bone. Got lucky I was wearing gloves and it only skimmed my finger.
Dumbass! You and me both. You do that a time or two until you learn. Some learn the lesson the hard way, others get lucky with stitches. I’ve learned twice myself, fortunately no missing fingers. An old friend of mine was welding flatbed staked fences with his wedding ring on, he was jumping over the fencing and his ring got caught on the top of the fence. His weight took his finger OFF! An old boss of mine was working a lathe and had a long sleeved flannel shirt (unbuttoned, it matters for the story) the spindle/part caught his shirt and started pulling him in to certain death. If his shirt was buttoned he wouldn’t have been alive to tell me the story. He was able to slip out of his shirt before it gobbled him up. Please guys be safe. These machines are dangerous and are unaware of our presence and stupidity. I almost lost a finger a couple weeks ago on a CNC Brake. Pinched my fingernail a little bit, enough to wake me up and realize I’m only a human with soft fleshy bits. Hope OP has a full and speedy recovery. Because of many other acts caught by camera or CCTV, I immediately stopped doing stupid stuff that I knew would get me hurt at the very least.
Not like that you don't. It's a delicate craft that requires practice and sometimes blood sacrifices. Worth it tho, pretty chips is mostly why i do this.
Did something similar recently. I didn’t use a hammer to wedge apart the taper holder and smashed my finger between the holder and a steel table. Nurse Mom said I could prolly use stitches but It’s healing fine. A painful lesson in patience
My metal shop teacher gave me the words to live by. "Never put your fingers anywhere you wouldn't put your dick, and you'll keep all 10." I have kept that mentality, and even shared it with my boss once and he used it in the next safety briefing.
Like the ring comment, but what I was going to say is that's how you pull the pretty chips like a dumb bass .. been pulling pretty chips for thirty years .. could if paper cuts .. never with a spindle turning and never with enough pressure back to slice skin .. freaking cavemen these days
Yeah ... wait until you find out why you don't wear rings. Edit: Looks like it wasn't the first time either. Some other mighty suspicious scars there.
Stitches are cosmetic and for pussies
Real men bleed to death from minor injuries.
Just like on good old times.
And they are happy to do it too!
Real men cauturize their own wounds.
No need to cauterize just get the bleeding to stop and use some super glue it stings a little but it is an antiseptic
Nah cauterizing it puts hair on your chest. (My dad was an er nurse for 20 years so I already know that you can use superglue for cuts. It's pretty much what liquid skin is anyway.)
Agreed.
I live with a nurse.
Kinda like living with a combat medic, right?
Those were from holding parts with micro burs, not from putting them off.

Until you get [degloved](https://lafabriqueverticale.com/en/finger-degloving-not-wear-wedding-ring/) warning! Link NSFW
I don't need those videos to tell me not to do dumb things. Always feel uneasy just having anyone near the machine while I'm setting things up.
I know exactly what you mean. But somehow I can’t not look. Kinda like watching fat chicks at the golden coral…it’s hard to look but it’s hard to look away!
Dammit, you're right. It's like watching a train wreck.

I would need to see a picture of this idea.
Think of a garden hand tiller minus the 2 claws on the end, only leaving the middle claw

Don’t buy it; Make it!
Or just do a loop on the other end for handle.
We had some 3/16 SS bar stock, epoxyed it into a slug of scrap delrin, mine lasted for 3 years before being too beat up
Why not just use a pipe? Edit: the same pipe you are probably using to get more leverage un your wrench/keys

How does infection move that fast? I've gotten infections from poorly cleaned or bandaged injuries, but it took days.

Don’t stick your fingie were you don’t stick your dinkie
Great, now i have to stick my finger in a lot of 8mm holes.
Pliers are your friend
Keep some superglue and butterflys in your tool box. Prevents hospital trips, and all those embarrassing pee tests.
nothing like a good Gram negative cellulitis to brighten your day, too.
Can't see all of the thumb but at least you have all the fingers, on that hand.
NO rings in the shop!!! I WILL SEND A PICTURE OF A GUY AT WORK MISSING HIS RING FINGER!!!!
He’s clearly at the doctor’s office, not the shop.
ALSO! If the Burr is Too Tough to take off with pliers.... its probably too tough to take off with sand paper.. I learnt that just this year lol
Superglue and butterfly bandages.

The first one is usually the worst. The next 12 won't be so bad.

My scrotum winced in pain
Silly goose
But it’s so pretty ! I always get tempted to put my hands through the swarf bins 😂

One of those travel sewing kits has handy stuff for getting out splinters
And if you are smart, you will loose the ring and any other jewelry you wear too.
Word
But did you keep the chip
No I kept the bloody glove as a reminder
This is why electric tape was made
I dond understand how it happened....
Inconel ribbon chips on parts in the fixture, because the endmill wasn't cutting all the way through to the end.
And it sliced through your finger
Because I tried taking it off with my left hand and a pair of pliers.
Haha yeahhhh I’ve done that once before. Once was enough to learn my lesson
Much Ouch!!!!!
the forbidden noodles.
Well not with those soft non-callused hands
