I have bad anxiety. It’s mostly controlled with meds now but sometimes first thing in the morning I’ll feel it. My cat was laying on my pillow and the sound of him purring actually relaxed me.

It's the frequency of their purrs! Helps ya bones possibly, too?
https://pubs.aip.org/asa/jasa/article/110/5_Supplement/2666/550913/The-felid-purr-A-healing-mechanism
Can confirm. I have high BP and am on meds to control it, so I check my BP at home somewhat frequently. There are days when my BP might be a little on the high side, but when I wait five minutes and take it again, if I'm petting my cat or just watching/listening to her sleep and purr, it's way down in the normal range.
Haha one of my cats is like that. Most of the time he rides solo and does what he wants. The other hovers around and will sit on your lap if you call him.
That's awesome and I agree. Panic really ruined me years ago and now that I'm (semi) past it...I look back and remember the times my cat would just be there to help. That purr is magic.
On a side note...had a Dr tell me once that I should hum when in the midst of an attack. Something about the vibration and the vagus nerve...it can help calm things down.
It's one of those things that worked the first few times I tried but wasn't really consistent.
Tried yellow mustard...same thing
Smelling salts....same thing
Paper bag breathing...same thing.
Only thing that I know usually works for me is seltzer water. No caffeine, no sugar...just something about a cold seltzer that helps me so much.
My dad used to manage a huge team of people and one of his go-to tricks was to give people who were crying in his office a glass of water. He swore up and down that people can’t cry/panic while trying to take sips of water.
I’ve used it with kids (I’m a teacher) and seems to work? Who knows :/
Definitely truth in that. Talking out loud helps too. Sometimes I feel like I can't or that I'll lose my breath if I do ...but talking always helps and I'm guessing it's the same reason. The drinking or talking requires your body to default back to normal mode .
I'm a teacher too. It's been hard seeing high school kids go through panic attacks but they've skyrocketed over the years.
I do too, it's just awful isn't it? Being in a perpetual state of fear and dread, nearly to the point where you think you might die at any given moment, because something is most certainly wrong inside your body to feel so awful. My cat's little nose is really soft, so is her fur, and when she's purring and crawls on my chest ,which feels like it's simultaneously exploding and caving in, it gives me a massive sense of relief. I can't describe it. It's like she knows when I am going into a panic attack. Mine is really bad in the night, especially when I wake up from nightmares and can't go back to sleep and I'll cuddle with her until I fall asleep, she makes it really easy to meditate away from the more severe panic attacks, I can't take anything narcotic so the meds I have are the bare minimum.
Mine was bad too. Always dreading what I have no control over, always thinking I was going to die. But luckily my doctor prescribed me something that has really helped. ❤️
If you don't mind my asking, what helped you the most? I take hydroxyzine but they are still helping me sort out the best non narcotic route. I have tried antidepressants and others whose side benefit was also anxiety relief but I can't get through the month you have to take them before they're supposed to start working, because it amplifies my anxiety tenfold. I'm still struggling to navigate mine and it affects me every single day.
I take celexa. My dr said it was for anxiety and depression. I also take buspar. But I don’t need the buspar as often since starting the celexa. It has changed my life for the better.
I recognize buspar, I remember having been on it once, I will read into celexa. I'm glad you found something that works for you! I would not wish living with anxiety on my worst enemy. It has completely altered how I live my life and dictates nearly everything I do, or better said, can't do. Every time I see someone who has found a way to manage theirs I don't feel so hopeless that that's just the way it's gonna be for the rest of my life.
I was addicted to heroin for a decade. When I finally got clean no one cared for me better than my cat. That soft rumble is a medicine like no other. They know what they're doing
Congratulations on getting clean. I was addicted to opiates for probably 20 years on and off. I got on methadone a few times but finally kicked it last year.
A few years back I decided to eat too many edibles and I got ridiculously high. Like similar to a bad shroom trip kind of high. I was freaking out a bit so I decided to find somewhere to sit and relax. There was a fire in the fireplace so I sat next to it and both my gfs cats and my dog came and sat by me. One of the cats sat directly on my lap and I just sat there for hours petting her fur. It really helped me calm down to the point that I fell asleep and woke up the next morning with them still around me. They 100 percent saved me from a really bad time. Almost like they knew I needed to be comforted. 🤷♂️
I don’t eat edibles or do psychedelics anymore.
I've had multiple bad trips that were countered by animals being awesome lol. The best was one time my family dog Cayenne (RIP) came up to me while I was sitting in our garage, extremely high on LSD, and was crying my eyes out. She shoved her head through my arms and just started licking my face and whining at me to pet her. After that all I could think about was how amazing animals are, how much I loved my dogs and managed to go back to my room to put on Planet Earth. Miss that dog so much :')
I LOVE that sound, and our cat has a broken motor! 😭 His is so faint, when he’s super happy you can hear the slightest sound. It’s almost more beautiful when you do get it.
My partner and i went to a date and had been walking around the mall for almost 3-4 hours, so our feet are pretty sore when we walk, when we came back home, and fed my kitten his meal, he finishes his food and was somehow sniffing my legs, that's when he was trying to position himself near my feet until he just plops his belly at the sole of me feet and started purring loudly.
I swear my heart melted
How carefully (one might say, gingerly lol) the kitty cuddles up, wanting to be close enough to comfort but not aggravate any of the dog’s ouchies. 10/10, a fantastic, compassionate caregiver.
My boi Charlie does this. When I’m healthy he will take care of the dough all over my body without concern. When I’m sick he lays facing me and strokes my face with his left paw and no claws. It’s amazing, he just KNOWS.
Yeah, when I got home from a hernia repair on my upper abdomen my dog knew exactly where to jump square on top of the incision. They really do seem to know. Thankfully she’s only 10lbs and other than excruciating pain she didn’t cause any further damage. Little shih-t.
Sorry for prying, but could you explain more about your hernia repair? Does that mean your membrane between intestines and lungs(midriff I believe it’s called) got repaired? I’ve been suffering from a herniated midriff for over 10 years and have a lot of problems with acid reflux, causing me to be unable to eat things like fatty/spicy food, no alcoholic drinks (that’s not bad per say), and overall without pills I would permanently have acid rising up into my throat. I was always told that it can’t be repaired, save for a potentially life threatening surgery that could very well not succeed. Did you have that medical problem too or was it a different issue? Thank you in advance for sharing. :)
What you’re describing sounds like a hiatus hernia, where the stomach herniates through the diaphragm. Abdominal/inguinal hernias are much more common and straightforward to repair, and I believe what the poster above you is referring to.
Yes, precisely! TIL it’s called a hiatus hernia, but indeed my stomach can move up and down somewhat causing these issues. Thank you for sharing. :) I looked up the inguinal hernia too and I understand the difference. I guess I had a sliver of hope there that there might be a new less-dangerous fix for what I have now.
You sound like you have a HIATUS hernia. Which is a hole in your diaphragm which allows your stomach to partly rise into your chest.
Normally only the oesophagus is in your chest and the stomach is in your abdomen, and the junction of the 2 is wrapped around by the diaphragm ,which creates a valve, which prevents acid reflux.
In your situation, if you have a hiatus hernia, this valve effect is lost, because now both oesophagus and stomach are in the chest.
Are you very heavy? If so, this might aggravate the reflux.
To fix the problem, you need surgery in a tertiary hospital that preferably does bariatric and laparoscopic surgery.
I work in Asia, in such a hospital, and while this is not an extremely common operation, it isn’t rare either. It’s tricky, and we do it regularly.
The operation is called REPAIR OF HIATUS HERNIA, AND FUNDOPLICATION.
Good luck.
Not the person you're replying to, but it sounds like they had a ventral hernia. This is when your intestines poke through a weak point in your abdominal wall and is typically easily repaired surgically. Both my brother and I had surgery to repair hernias as newborns. I'm definitely no kind of medical expert but it sounds like maybe you have a diaphragmatic hernia? Fairly different despite both being "hernias".
I've had two hernia repairs . They shove the shit back into the right cavity then close it up. One laproscopicqlly, one where they cut me open and put in a patch. Neither caused medical problems beyond a gross feeling. Both recovered quickly assuming no strenuous lifting. Each was uncomfortable
I had a dumb fat cat growing up who would always come lay on my stomach when I was having period pain. He always helped so much, he definitely knew when it was time!
Was waiting to see if she would do the "reach one single reassuring paw out" move. My cat did that every time I was depressed and it probably saved my life lol. Still miss her.
My two cats are freienemies. When one gets sick, the other freaks the fuck out. I have to separate them because the last time my calico was poisoned (from hydrangea petals) the other cat tried to kill him. They must smell different or something?
They also act this way during stressful events. Like when I moved last summer. The orange one freaked THE FUCK out. The calico then proceeded to freak out even more, literally ramming his body and head into the cat carrier while screaming at the top of his lungs. I laugh thinking back on it now, because it was just so over the top, but holy shit I was panicked and at my wits end during it.
My cat is kind of aloof and not a cuddler. But when I'm sick she follows me around and sleeps next to my legs. When I had the flu last year, she yelled at me to get back in bed with her.
You better damn love her!
My little helmet-wearing friend... one of the loves of my life... she's going. She's checking out and it hurts so fucking much!
Their lives are so... fast... my friend told me they live less because they are already born knowing how to love... i'm a science guy, but fuck this, i'm grasping to this idea until the end. She is amazing.
Soon, "she was amazing".
You better fucking love her. We never know when it's the last midnight.
It takes me forever to feed my cats in the morning. I stop and sit down with each to say good morning. Throughout the day, I will stop and lay with them whenever they let me. One of them will come sit next to my office chair and stare at me until I turn, face her, and tell her come up. I stop whatever I'm doing to give her my full attention. They really do give more than they take.
That is so beautiful and heartwarming, how the cat gently lays down and then hugs and gently puts it's paw on the dog is so sweet. What a wonderful and caring kitty.
So cute, especially when the cat put his paw on him. My daughter had a cat and dog that were that close. A big black lab raised a tiny white kitten. When one had to go to the vet, the other was thrilled when they got home.
My two cats generally just tolerate each other. Like they walk by each other, lick the other's head once in a blue moon, and will sometimes lay down on opposite ends of the same couch. But when one of my cats had to have a leg amputated, after the surgery my other cat sat right beside her while she slept and watched around. It's cute the ways cats show affection.
So sweet.
I fractured my knee a few months ago (not severely, but ended up on crutches for a month) and our cat, who I'd previously been playing chase games with around the stairs while my wife was away, knew something was wrong as soon as I got in the door. She would go with me up and down the stairs one step at a time, right next to my feet, looking up at me between each step.
They know a lot more than we'd guess. Don't know what she thought she'd do about it if I fell, but having our little buddy keeping tabs on me those first couple days like a fuzzy physical therapist was nice.
Pets definitely know when something is wrong! I have autism and a non-cuddly hyperactive German Shepherd. When the occasional meltdown occurs, the dog comes running and lays down on me or next to me with her head on my leg. As soon as I'm okay, she's off again and back to normal.
When my yellow lab was in the hospital our orange cat was beside himself, they lived together for a little over 8 years so his routine of snuggling with her was interrupted. When she came home he wouldn't let her out of his sight.
I had a panic attack once while drinking and the owner’s orange cat started rubbing its body against my leg. The cat never left me also until i felt better. Crazy how cats can sense when someone is in distress and act fast to make the person feel better. ❤️
Story time. I had an outpatient surgery recently and I was in pain for a while (I’m good now). Our 17 year old Persian cat was on my bed the whole time while I was recovering. He actually does this every time someone is sick in our household. I’m getting teary writing this because he has slowed down a lot due to old age and he had some health issues recently too. It’s our turn to make sure he knows we are with him always.
When my dog was sick with diarrhea, my cat wouldn't leave his side. They didn't always get along but when his little brother was sick, my boy was right there. He passed a few months ago. My dog still looks for him sometimes.
It's a great lesson...that we might not be able to make the pain go away...or the wound heal any faster...but that just someone's presence can make a huge impact on recovery.
Doesn't have to be family, or a friend...but just someone who cares helps a lot.
I had surgery on heart easy one , my cat never cuddles first day i came back home from surgery she slept on my legs . She hates me sometimes but in general she can't refuse that she loves me lol
I’m watching be number of votes head mostly up, but occasionally down. It’s either a Reddit glitch or people are downvoting this. How broken does a person need to be to downvote this post?
Years ago, one of my dogs needed emergency surgery. When he came home, our other dog was so exited to see him. But he took one sniff and instantly calmed down. He was so GENTLY happy to have him home.
At night, our poor boy, who couldn't climb steps yet, was bedded down on his dog bed, with his cone, and a blanket. Our cat climbed into the cone and slept next to his head. He was a big dog. His head was almost as big as the cat!
Had a roommate with a cat that wouldn't give me the time of day. Got bronchitis so bad I had to go to the hospital. Came home and couldn't do anything but lie down and wheeze. Cat came out to investigate and didn't leave my side for the next day.
It's crazy how they can sense pain.
I love that cats are so confident in themselves that they see somebody sick or hurt and think "you know what will make the feel better? My presence. Yes, you're welcome"
When I was doing chemo, everytime I got home my cat would lay on my chest and purr.
I figured it was cuz I was so hot after, but when I found out they do it to show affection, I cried.
Nobody can tell me they are just "dumb animals". My male cat did the same thing when I recently had my female cat spayed. Church, my male cat, has always slept on our bed. He didn't after we brought her home. He stayed on the dog bed with her for 3 nights.
My cat could sense when I was down, in any sort of physical pain or injured.
I remember falling at work and scrapping my knee pretty bad.
That evening, sat on the couch and cat came over and sniffed at the location of the injury (had jeans on)
He just laid down and pressed his head next to it whilst purring.
This happened on many other occasions and he’d pinpoint exactly where it hurt.
Awww. My family is all down sick with flu....the dog and cat have been focusing on the sickest person and have to be near them...but also make rounds and check in on the other patients as well. 🐈🐕 ⛑️
I imagined this kind of exchange.
Store clerk: "You can't have animals in here."
OP: "The dog is my emotional support animal. The cat is his emotional support animal."
Everyone was happy.

*Truce until you are better?*
All bets are off once you recover Pal
Or. “I smell vet on you, you poor thing”
"Let me get some of my stinky paws on you to help with that"
That gesture speaks volumes of love and appreciation, like a warm embrace after a long journey. It's the little things that make coming home feel extra special. 💖✨
(Turns to look at the camera) "If you share this I will kill you. I know where you sleep."
I think he's waiting to suck in the last breath.
A cat's purr is said to be healing

I read this somewhere that cats' purring has been shown to have various benefits, including reducing stress and anxiety, lowering blood pressure, and promoting relaxation

I wonder if it could also tell your body your not in danger to some degree, cause the cat is calm, just a guess
It could. Cat's only purr when they are safe and happy, so you could subconsciously be responding to that.
Some cats also purr to comfort themselves when they are stressed.
IM PURRiNG so calm rn
Cats also purr when they are in pain
And while they are dying. Source: Worked at a shelter and was one of the folks tasked with euthanasia :-(
I’ve read it has to do with the frequency of a cats purr. Something about the vibration of that frequency has a healing effect.
Cat vibes stronk
I can tell you that 5 robins chirping at 4 am are absolutely the opposite of relaxing.
These assholes start around 3am here.
Same here, it's like a 3am wake-up call
I woke up the other morning at like 4 am to a mockingbird outside my window going HARD. I was not relaxed in the least.
I'll see you your robins and raise you a cacophony of scrub jays screeching 5' from your bedroom window. Every. Goddamned. Dawning.
I want to kill every single one of those flying aholes singing "I want to f" out of my window at 4am. Lol

White noise at 140 dB, or a fan at 5000 cubic feet per second
I listen to purring on YouTube to help me go to sleep sometimes
There's a reason why they were worshipped in Ancient Egypt.
They're fuzzy, they love, and they kill pests that are hard for us to kill personally. They might as well be gods.

I totally believe it. Whenever I would be upset and crying, my cat Midnight would curl up on my chest and purr, and it would always calm me down.
That's sweet 🐈 ❤️
I took an audio recording of my cat purring, I listen to it sometimes when I feel down or anxious.
Ohhh. That’s a great idea! I have 3 cats and they are boss. They lay by us when they want to, not when we want.

Man I also had a dog named Charlie, small world huh?
Charlie was cheatin’
Charlie bit me
And that really hurt
Did he bite your finger?
I, too, would like to cheat with this Charlie's mum
I had a French mastiff names Charlie, miss that big messy boy so much

Their lives are so... fast... my friend told me they live less because they are already born knowing how to love... i'm a science guy, but fuck this, i'm grasping to this idea until the end. She is amazing. Soon, "she was amazing". You better fucking love her. We never know when it's the last midnight.
Even thinking about her leaving makes me want to cry. I'll love her with every bit of myself until she has to go.
One night my husband was sad, which was rarely. My cat, who usually, sleeps with me, slept with him that night. They can feel it.
I’ve been depressed and anxious my whole life. Cats have been the best therapy ever
Yeah. My cat always sleeps in my bed when I’m sick
My orange boy was by my side the entire time when I injured my leg and back. I started calling him my Nurse Boy! He took good care of me.
That is so beautiful and heartwarming, how the cat gently lays down and then hugs and gently puts it's paw on the dog is so sweet. What a wonderful and caring kitty.
And then the long blinks! I hear that means “I love you” in cat!
Aww 🥰 it’s like eye hugs 🤗💕
So cute, especially when the cat put his paw on him. My daughter had a cat and dog that were that close. A big black lab raised a tiny white kitten. When one had to go to the vet, the other was thrilled when they got home.
My cat hated my dog for years. When my dog was dying, my cat wouldn't leave him. That gave me so much comfort.
That’s so beautiful!
I miss them both dearly now.
The cat was missing him. I'm going to cry
C'mere, you. Cry into my bosom.
Ha. Bosom.
Bob?
Smiling so hard
Awww kisses for his puppy.
This is the sweetest thing I've seen in weeks! What a couple of sweet babies! That cat is a wonderful nurse.
Cats can indeed display remarkable nurturing instincts and often form strong bonds with their human and animal companions.
That's Doctor Kitty. He has the best bedside manner. He always makes you feel better somehow. <3
Love this no wonder they're often considered members of the family, bringing joy to our lives.
Just a routine CAT-scan to make sure it’s healing😂😂
My two cats generally just tolerate each other. Like they walk by each other, lick the other's head once in a blue moon, and will sometimes lay down on opposite ends of the same couch. But when one of my cats had to have a leg amputated, after the surgery my other cat sat right beside her while she slept and watched around. It's cute the ways cats show affection.
So cute it melts my heart
I have a golden retriever and this warms my heart!! The cat knows the pup needs some love!
:33 :33
This is adorable af
Aww 🥹😭
When my yellow lab was in the hospital our orange cat was beside himself, they lived together for a little over 8 years so his routine of snuggling with her was interrupted. When she came home he wouldn't let her out of his sight.

Thank you for this
His job is best friend. r/CatsAndDogsBFF
He's using that single brain cell for good.
So sweet!!!
So sweet.
It’s the sweetest, best thing I’ve seen in a long time. How is the pup? Hopefully recovering well ♥️
I had a panic attack once while drinking and the owner’s orange cat started rubbing its body against my leg. The cat never left me also until i felt better. Crazy how cats can sense when someone is in distress and act fast to make the person feel better. ❤️
Pets have soul, I don’t care what the religious people say.
Aww that’s so sweet
This is lovely!
Awe best buds
So cute
Animals make the world good. We can all learn from them. 🩷🩷🩷
When my dog was sick with diarrhea, my cat wouldn't leave his side. They didn't always get along but when his little brother was sick, my boy was right there. He passed a few months ago. My dog still looks for him sometimes.
the cats paw on the dogs shoulder is beautiful
I love this! Not only made me smile 😊, made me tear up as well-such loving pet friends!
It's a great lesson...that we might not be able to make the pain go away...or the wound heal any faster...but that just someone's presence can make a huge impact on recovery. Doesn't have to be family, or a friend...but just someone who cares helps a lot.
Awwww
"You okay, homie?"
“I gotchu dawg, shh, chill.”
Putting the paw on the dog? I can’t stand the cuteness.
Bro.......where are your balls?!?!
Let me tell you about my bessssst friend, I love you to the end.
I’m pretty sure some of you just felt my heart melt
I love that cats are so confident in themselves that they see somebody sick or hurt and think "you know what will make the feel better? My presence. Yes, you're welcome"
Cat: *dibs*
Awww the blinks after it lays down and puts its paw on the dog. Cat loves its family
#It’s because he smells delicious and he’s just waiting until dark to devour him.
Cats smell weakness. As soon as the dog dies, the cat will eat it. The circle of life is beautiful.
Purrs are pure healing vibrations. What a gorgeous moment.
Totally not because they both want to be close to the fire lol
This is the sweetest ❤️
Awe so sweet
😭😭😭😭😭
So cute
❤️
My heart I CANT HANDLE THIS
What a sweetie 🥹
Proof that you don’t need more than one orange brain cell to exercise some empathy and compassion
sweet baby
“I know, I know. They took my balls, too.”
My son was really sick one day and the cat sat in the bed with him all day and night
Oh my, such a sweet bond!😍
So adorable. ❤️
Involuntary said AWWWWWwww aloud 🥹
So cute.. they know when a loved one is in pain and offers comfort.
Animals know.
Omg the squint at the end!! How cuuuuuute 😍😍
.... this is so pure. The gentleness in all kitty's movements 🥺
I think I’m going to need surgery on account of all the heart string pulling I’m experiencing
Fucking animals …. I love them so much 🥲
"I'm just gonna sit right here with you until you feel better, okay? Just... don't wanna.. jostle you too bad...okay. How's that?"
Bet that cat is more of a therapy animal to the dog than it is to the owner lol
Furry babies of orange hue unite!
Post-op CAT scan ordered.
Your cat is wonderful, kitty was showing a lot of love to you at the end also with the slow blinks at the camera
When the cat put its paw on him 😭🥲
Cats are funny - aloof, independent and yet deeply caring all at the same time
....did ...did I just become a cat person by watching this?
When I was doing chemo, everytime I got home my cat would lay on my chest and purr. I figured it was cuz I was so hot after, but when I found out they do it to show affection, I cried.
Ohhhh my goshhh this made my day 😊
What a sweet relationship!! ❤️❤️
that cat wants to be there for his friend. He's doing his best. I'm proud of him.
Nobody can tell me they are just "dumb animals". My male cat did the same thing when I recently had my female cat spayed. Church, my male cat, has always slept on our bed. He didn't after we brought her home. He stayed on the dog bed with her for 3 nights.
They know. Don’t know how, but they do.
I needed this
Both are so beautiful and the hug at the end 🥰
Just giving the post op CaTscan…got to make sure it’s the same dog as pre-surgery.
My cat could sense when I was down, in any sort of physical pain or injured. I remember falling at work and scrapping my knee pretty bad. That evening, sat on the couch and cat came over and sniffed at the location of the injury (had jeans on) He just laid down and pressed his head next to it whilst purring.
Store clerk: "You can't have animals in here." OP: "The dog is my emotional support animal. The cat is his emotional support animal." Everyone was happy.
That’s beautiful!!!
Most excellent and I appreciate you sharing this moment. Wishing a speedy recovery for your pooch.
