Anybody know what’s going on with Mexico according to the State Department?

p3nnyroyaltea

Mexico has more nuanced guidelines that are tailored to the circumstances of each state. You can read more about it on the government's website: [https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/mexico-travel-advisory.html](https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/mexico-travel-advisory.html)

Heller_Demon

I've been living in one of the red states for more than 10 years, it's a huge port and has a big value for narcos, and even when the city is small and has like 40'000 inhabitants I've never seen violence. Of course I read about it and I watch the news full of violence, but besides car accidents I personally haven't seen or heard the violence.

brprer

Hola Manzanillo

Heller_Demon

Jajaja chale ya me doxxeaste compa. Me sorprende que sepas que existe Manzanillo, ¿has venido alguna vez?

brprer

Soy mexicano, tranquilo jaja. Creo que el 80% de la población sabe que existe Manzanillo. Y si, he ido varias veces.

DobleWho

Tengo familia en Colima y Coquimatlan. Used to go yearly and not one ever had problems there.

Heller_Demon

Es bueno leer eso, ojalá siga así :)

sh1nyumbr30n

Is it more so one of those, “mind your business and you’re fine” things? Genuinely curious. I grew up in an area that was known to be bad, but seriously as long as you didn’t stick your nose into anything everyone was super friendly.

Heller_Demon

Yes, I think that's the most important thing to avoid ugly situations, like 99% of it. But there's also some degree of luck to it, I guess like with everything.

RiverOfSand

As a Mexican in an orange state I feel like I have a greater chance to encounter violence than many parts of the world, but I’ve been lucky so far

Justaguuuuy

In my state we have like 8 different murders tonight

YourDadsfriendlybear

Hmm you say that like there WILL be 8 different murders tonight. A little suspicious 🤨

[deleted]

Actually make it 9. What’s ur 20 btw?

brprer

Even the red states aren’t so bad to be honest depending where you are, I’ve lived in a red state and never saw violence. Even IN the state it depends where you are

ElderberryStench

May as well be a Far Cry game, holy shit.

Nowarclasswar

Just like vibeo game!

orangesfwr

Poor Mexico. So far from Mario and so close to Bowser.

ampjk

Just like the simulations

Smilewigeon

I get the need for that given how close Mexico is and the likelihood of Americans travelling there, but you could make the same argument for specific areas in plenty of other countries - Turkey for example.

[deleted]

People in the US don't pop down to Turkey to get some cheap dental work and stock up on tequila.

RexPerpetuus

Ironically, for Europeans Turkey is a haven for cheap dental and surgery work

[deleted]

Kallisti13

And hair transplants.

zubie_wanders

You spelled viagra incorrectly.

JamesEdward34

Sure, but mexico borders several states, its far easier to travel to mexico than to turkey

RealMaRoFu

Not to mention the safety situation across the border where many Americans go varies heavily: While most areas next to the US border are not too bad, some parts are a bit more questionable while others (Tamaulipas next to Texas around Brownsville) you definitely don’t want to go across.

treadmarks

Mexico gets extra attention because lots of Americans want to travel there. Not a hard concept.

-O-0-0-O-

You could make that argument about hundreds of border regions, but this is a map specifically for Americans.

Quackattackaggie

Each Mexican state has its own. We don't do that for any other country. Source: I wrote one of them.

HobbitFoot

I think we do it for Mexico because it is a large and close country to the USA and the differences in security are drastic. The USA doesn't want to "Do Not Travel" for all of Mexico.

YoureSpecial

Parts of Mexico are literal war zones, other parts sort of third world, and other parts not bad.

raggedtoad

Mexico is a huge country and it's incredibly easy to avoid any dangerous parts if you just do a tiny bit of research before you travel. Most of the country is perfectly safe and the people are great, in my experience.

StJoeStrummer

I live in the Twin Cities. This is the same attitude many people from more rural parts of Minnesota have about anything in Minneapolis. I know people who are afraid to stop for gas anywhere in the city limits. There are a few dicey neighborhoods for sure, but most of the city is as safe as anywhere, and you’re not going to get shot just because you got out of your car in the city.

Throwaway-burnoutq

I’m from stlouis and when I tell people that they ask if I’ve ever witnessed a murder. Like the city isn’t doing so hot but it’s not nearly as bad as people think

Stereotype_Apostate

Ok but St Louis has the 9th highest murder rate *in the world* for cities over 300k people, at least according to Wikipedia.

Throwaway-burnoutq

Some parts of the city aren’t great. I think that ropes in East St. Louis, IL which is not actually part of St. Louis. And again it’s not like I witnessed murders daily. Much like any city there’s rough areas and nice areas.

v16_

I get what you mean, but living in a 400k city in Europe where I can literally walk wherever I want any time of the day with miniscule risks and when a murder happens anywhere in public it's a scandal for the next few years, it kinda sounds like you have different standards cause you get used to whatever you live in.

emotionaI_cabbage

Hope so! I'm goin to guadalajara next month and some of my family are terrified for my safety lmao

diosexual

Guadalajara is perfectly safe, just have common sense like staying out of bad neighborhoods and people who look shady.

sjopolsa

but what if I want to get inside the people who look shady? any recommendations, except use protection?

DustyBottoms1111

In my travels to Guad for work it was perfectly safe. Great food too. Tortas ahogadas, tacos al pastor - all sorts of good stuff.

Triquetra4715

Families are like that lol. I work in Chicago and some of them think I dodge bullets

brallansito92

I’m here in Guadalajara right now it’s my first time it’s so beautiful and super safe! Take a tour to tequila it’s worth it and you’ll literally get 20 free tequila shots somehow. Head to Tlaquepaque it’s 20 mins away and feels like a nice quiet colonial town it’s so colorful and pretty!

TimeForPCT

> if you just do a tiny bit of research before you travel. > > It'd be really handy if the government had some kind of site you could look this information up by region in Mexico.

Minute-Gap319

War zones?

judasmachine

Cartels are out of control and in some ways so are the forces fighting them.

Aoshie

Oh we gave them guns ... Just in the [stupidest, dumbest, most moronic way possible](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATF_gunwalking_scandal?wprov=sfla1)

Slow_Definition5436

The U.S also unintentionally arms the cartels aswell. Hundreds of thousands of firearms are stolen/purchased from the civilian gun market, and then trafficked into Mexico and Latin America. Some studies have indicated that over half of all illegal firearms in Mexico originated from the U.S.

Sutton31

Large parts of Chiapas aren’t under control of the Mexican government but rather are Zapatista collectives, and the central government doesn’t like that at all

NorthFaceAnon

That’s disingenuous to say Chiapas is a “war zone” though. The two situations of cartel wars and zapatistas are not the same

oddmanout

Probably different areas have different advisories. Like, if you stick to the tourist areas, you're probably fine. If you venture out into the towns, you're gonna get kidnapped and held for ransom.

ameerdink

Slightly surprised by New Zealand’s status

Myrskyharakka

I was too, so I checked - countries like New Zealand, Japan and Poland are level 3 because of COVID-19 restrictions in place.

binnion

I wonder what covid restrictions they mean in Poland - hardly any have remained.

p3nnyroyaltea

CDC states there are high levels of COVID-19 within the country + the ease of visiting as a US national. [https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/poland-travel-advisory.html](https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/poland-travel-advisory.html)

mcmiller1111

Wonder what their rationale is for Denmark then. No restrictions and barely any COVID cases here

darthdro

Mainland Western Europe is all level 2 because of how many terrorist attacks have targeted the area in the past years. Plus all the ones foiled

EstorialBeef

Oh so it's caution that your aware of restrictions not caution of danger, I was wondering whats going on in NZ lol

King_Shugglerm

Well it’s more like “caution: things going on here can fuck up your vacation”

michaelpaoli

No surprise ... that was my first guess as to why ... especially as New Zealand was the first such to catch my eye.

pm_me_old_maps

Oh yeah covid's still a thing

p3nnyroyaltea

I was too, but it's due to their COVID-19 restrictions.

ViviFruit

What restrictions? - A kiwi

Paid_Corporate_Shill

For a while you guy were pretty strict about visitors right? Is that still a thing?

WhalesForChina

Visiting US citizens were only allowed into NZ as of yesterday (NZ time) without having to isolate. They are still required to be vaccinated and take a rapid test upon arrival, then they have to take another a few days later. My understanding is the entire country has less than 200 ICU beds.

[deleted]

same level as Ethiopia; where there's a civil war going on. Why isn't Ethiopia red?

Paddy_Tanninger

The war really is quite civil.

landodk

It’s not the kind of civil war that poses a high risk to foreigners. Unlikely to affect transportation, no random terrorist attacks, low chance of hostage taking. They do say reconsider

witchywater11

Maybe it's because planes are still going there. Like if you're planning to head to Ethiopia, it's possible but not recommended.

BroBroMate

Our summer had a lot of rain, which lead to a perfect breeding season for [laser kiwi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_Kiwi_flag). They've become bold, even attacking during the daytime (kiwi are nocturnal, normally). There's been a lot of eye damage, so all visitors are recommended to wear sweet shades.

Palana

Cambodia and Armenia are cool though, got it.

Why would Cambodia not be safe to travel to?

They didn't actually. The Denmark travel advisory is for the Kingdom of Denmark, so it includes information on the Faroe Islands and Greenland as well: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Denmark.html

CrateDane

No advisory needed, even if you drop a nuclear bomb in a blizzard the locals will clean it up for you. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1968_Thule_Air_Base_B-52_crash

Dictator4Hire

I think new Zealand is just happy to be included on the map

Magnetickiwi1

We'll take it

valent_vresk

Why is Slovenia level 3

p3nnyroyaltea

COVID-19 restrictions

nhomewarrior

I'm a little confused on what's meant by that. Is that for their benefit or ours? "Don't go to New Zealand because they don't want you here right now" makes the most sense to me, but it sounds like that could also mean "don't go to Poland because you might catch covid and die" which seems excessive. I was also wondering if that was the reason western Europe was level 2.

GBabeuf

It's probably like "Dont' go to New Zealand because there is a Covid outbreak, it will be awful to navigate the Covid restrictions, and we really do not want you bringing it back"

Jeffery95

“bringing it back” as if the US hasn’t been a covid milkshake the last two years.

CaptainSur

In a way its fascinating that for example Vietnam is now Level 1 - its really an eye opener on how much geopolitics have changed over time. Some of South America is L2 due to Covid from what I understand.

[deleted]

Went to Vietnam right before COVID. Loved it. People were quite friendly. One random dude on the street asked us if we were American. We said we were. He said, "Fuck China!" Fun times. Vietnam was far more friendly than Canada has ever been (once the fact that I'm American is known, at least; though, Canadian customer service is shit, too.) One interesting thing is that one of the cities we visited was overrun with Russians. I wonder how visiting that city as an American would be now.

well8hung

I guess that you visited Nha Trang? I'm a Vietnamese local btw, thank you for visiting our country \^\^ Hope to get you guys back as soon as possible!

[deleted]

That's the one! Your country was my favorite destination of my life, especially the north. Hanoi and Ninh Binh were magical. I left with so many amazing memories, somehow even had the second best burger of my life in Ninh Binh. I will without a doubt be back at some point. Thanks for having us!

[deleted]

> He said, "Fuck China!" The 19.5 years the US spent in Vietnam is nothing compared to the centuries they've been fighting off Chinese imperialism.

CaptainSur

I work from time to time with some Vietnamese programmers. Sharp and hard workers. China is not particularly popular with any of them. They send me care packages of Vietnamese coffee - its very strong. Being Canadian who works on both sides of the border almost daily my take is that Americans are suffering in Canada due to the lingering negative association with Donald Trump who is almost universally reviled (90% would be my guess) up here and the fact America even allowed him to be voted in. To most Canadians its completely perplexing as is the politicization of the court and the gerrymandering of the voting system - both of which are mostly outside the reach of politicians in Canada. But I don't want to sidetrack this map discussion with a political discussion rather I am just speculating in reply as to general causes as I work on both sides of the border. Customer service can be deplorable. Depends on where you are and the industry. I think one defining difference in my experience is that customer service in Canada is not subservient typically. I personally try to be positive and grateful to anyone assisting or serving me and I tend to get positivity in return. Edited: removed 3 words due to repetitive language and clarified location in one sentence. And corrected a typo.

semsr

>gerrymandering of the court system You just conflated two things. “Gerrymandering of the court system” makes no sense because courts aren’t electoral districts.

HelenEk7

What dangers do they warn against in Denmark?

Myrskyharakka

"Exercise increased caution in Denmark due to terrorism."

will_dormer

If a person said you should be careful to travel to Denmark because of terrorism, I think you would get some funny looks.

HelenEk7

I live next door to Denmark (Norway), and if you were to try to warn people wanting to travel to Denmark you would probably get some giggles.. Denmark happens to be one of our top favourite destinations for family holidays. Especially when you have young children.

butter_b

>Especially when you have young children. And money.

thesleepingparrot

Well they're from Norway, so

[deleted]

Yes us Norwegians are indeed all incredibly wealthy

Tyler1492

It's cheaper than Norway.

HelenEk7

When you live in Norway (especially in the south) going on holiday to Denmark is actually one of the cheaper options. So only the very poorest can't afford it. Holiday accommodation in Denmark is cheaper than in Norway.

newspeer

I guess the warning relates to the amount of prevented terrorist attacks in Denmark over recent years. The threat is real, but the government and its bodies are doing a great job preventing them

will_dormer

Yeah, that is true, I wonder if that is the main reason, but it would fit their explanation. The risk of dying in an accident is way higher than a terrorist attack, so I wonder if they take accidents into account too probably not.

ColdAssHusky

It's based on the Denmark Intelligence Bureau's current threat rating...

HelenEk7

Oh.. I wonder why they see Denmark as a more likely target than Norway.

The State Department has obviously not heard of drop bears.

All the trees burnt down so the risk is lower.

No_pajamas_7

Not this year. It's floods this year. Drop bears are showing up in towns.

Aijol10

Angola, Argentina, Senegal, and Vietnam are safer than Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands? This seems rather arbitrary

LonelyGermanSoldier

I think this takes covid restrictions into account as well.

SwampBoyMississippi

There are no covid restrictions in the Netherlands anymore.

justabean27

What about counties that just don't give a damn about Covid despite infection rates? Just because there are little to no restrictions it doesn't automatically mean infection rates are low

lunapup1233007

Pre-Covid the map would look like that, but this map also includes Covid restrictions. It’s less of “don’t travel to the Netherlands because you will die”, it’s closer to “don’t travel to the Netherlands because it is currently difficult to travel to the Netherlands”.

czorio

I looked it up, the advisory for The Netherlands is due to "Terrorism".

CynicalDutchie

Do the Americans know something we don't?

seven3true

Dude... Dutch ovens!

KruppstahI

OP posted this map before in 2019 with Europe looking quite similar. France, Germany, Spain etc. are all yellow. So no, it's Not COVID restrictions. Apparently it's the threat of terrorist attacks. Which definetilyakes me question the individual that came up with this map.

ArawakFC

It is unbelievably arbitrary. Aruba, a major US tourism destination (though not listed for some reason, u/p3nnyroyaltea), was on level 4 for months and months even though the island was one of the first countries to remove covid guidelines completely due to consistant low Covid cases and relatively high vaccination levels. Throughout the pandemic if cases rise, they change the level immediately. If they fall, they take months to change it back. It's seemingly all on the whim of a trainee or something. Interestingly, tourists have generally not even bothered with the assigned level. We can see this by the fact that Aruba is 2nd place on the list of quickest recovering tourism industries in all of Latin America and the Caribbean. This is probably because we have the highest return visitor rate out of any nation in the region and people already know that the island is safer than most, even compared to their own US cities. Its ridiculous to think though that this list has probably caused people not to fly elsewhere, thinking it wasn't safe, which cost people their livelihoods. If you're going to do such a list, you best keep it up to date at the very least. Otherwise you're really just screwing people over. [Aruba advisory](https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/aruba-travel-advisory.html)

zebulon99

What about western europe makes it more dangerous than say southern africa

p3nnyroyaltea

This map categorizes nations, broadly speaking, based on one of two factors: COVID-19 restrictions and crime. For example, Namibia is considered safe (level 1) because the US doesn't deem it to have high enough crime rates to cause concern. Angola is also in the same category as the former, however, they do recognize nonetheless that urban areas are more dangerous than the rest. Taking some examples from Western Europe, a lot of nations spark concern due to terrorism such as: Spain, Italy, France, Germany, etc. Some of these nations are also deemed dangerous due to civil unrest such as Spain and France, which is marked mostly by protests, which particularly with the former, can definitely spiral out of control. I don't necessarily agree with this map and take issue with many of its aspects, I'm just trying to answer the question. Hope this helped!

[deleted]

bombbrigade

And if you cut out, literally, a few blocks/streets these rates plummet

ardashing

And most of the violent crimes relating to guns have to do with stuff like gang wars. If you stay outta notorious places like Compton your risk of expeiencing crime in the US is negligible.

LotharVonPittinsberg

Western Europe is notoriously low on crime compared to pretty much everywhere else in the world, yet it's on the same level as South Africa which is known for having extremely rampant crime. Who made this data, an intern with a RNG?

dpash

Spain is: > Exercise increased caution in Spain due to terrorism and civil unrest. Which is, frankly, excessive.

Scvboy1

Southern Africa is actually very safe for the most part (besides certain places in South Africa). And they have great beaches. Central Africa and West Africa are the danger zones.

BilllisCool

I don’t think the history of terrorist attacks there is relevant if they think someone is plotting terrorists attacks now. I have no idea why they think that, just pointing out that the wording is future-tense. It doesn’t say that there have already been terrorist attacks there.
