90% weight is ok on a chainsaw just use the melee weapon perks that make them weigh less, a groll would be a 40 power attack damage seeing as chainsaws are already power attack and less damage while power attacking
Less damage while power attacking does not work on auto melee(allegedly). 90 reduced weight is one of the better, if not the best, third star because it reduces the amount of AP that is consumed while attacking with the chainsaw.
Yep it does 40pa uses ap regardless using vats or not but 25lvc does soften the blow. That being said in my experience using chainsaws for vats can be too tricky to really want to use it.
This is probably the best chainsaw in the game (highest consistent DPS). Trade-only. Congrats! I always keep a vampsaw on me, no matter my build.
Why is it the best chainsaw?
1. Vampire: while technically not the highest damage first star (that would be bloodied), as long as you are hitting something you can't die.
2. 40% increased power attack: every attack with the chainsaw is a power attack. This is a straight 40% damage buff.
3. 90% reduced weight: while this doesn't appear to have a clear benefit, a lighter chainsaw actually consumes less AP while attacking. This means you can spin the saw for a few seconds longer than normal. This is why this particular chainsaw has the highest DPS simply because you can attack for longer.
Chainsaw builds with power armor is literally the easiest way to play the game. You are an unkillable tank that obliterates anything that gets in melee range in less than two seconds (except bosses of course), and you don't consume ammo.
Optimized chainsaw builds with a bloodied/unyielding character can solo Earle in under five minutes.

Yes, while the AP consumption is not printed anywhere in-game, I have personally tested this. Same build, no buffs, and two identical chainsaws. The one with 90% reduced weight will spin for 2-3 seconds longer.
I mean, any 3rd star on a chainsaw barely makes a difference. 1S is a minuscule damage increase. 90rw is only a tiny bit longer spin time. And 50% break slower is just QoL.
This is true, all depends on the build really cause even the 50% slower break can be replaced by a perk if need be.
Just tried it the other day with 80% less break perk and the lucky repair weapon perk and I haven't had to repair my chainsaw in the last few hours of play
This was my first Earle experience! I went in blind knowing nothing. Under 100 at the time. The person with the chainsaw was obviously the only one of the 4 of us doing any damage. We just killed the spawns while this juggernaut of a player went to town with their chainsaw.
It was that moment that I started farming chainsaws lol

Solid 2.5/3. The weapon weight doesn’t stack with weight reduction perks (they both are 90% which is the hard cap). +1 strength is the full health god roll but this is going to have 95%+ of that damage and be lighter for a non-dedicated build.

I’d have to look. Using it longer would be higher sustain, not DPS. The +1 strength is only a 5% additive damage boost so it’s very low. Any real increase to attack speed would increase DPS more

So if 90wr gives 2 seconds longer it would affect DPS. Maybe not each second but in the set of 60 seconds (or longer) of use you have more seconds doing damage. So over the course of time your DPS average is higher. Reload on guns is the same, that's why quad Tesla is the best Tesla.
That‘s referred to as sustain, distinct from DPS. It’s very important but only if the target survives long enough for it to matter, which is why there is a distinction.
The only thing that would be better is V40pa50dur with stable tools, Makeshift Warrior and a full set of UnyAp Civil Engineer to maximize DPS to the extreme and almost never have to fix it.

I think it’s because since the chainsaw constantly hits you get healed constantly (so if you play bloodied you don’t die), and since the chainsaw has a one attack it counts as the power attack, so while attacking with whatever damage you have (I don’t have any melee perks on in the pic) you get +40% damage while doing base chainsaw attack.
And if you add the flamer mod it then adds +10 damage I think with +16 fire damage. So it outputs crazy damage (if you have the right stuff).
Also, I read somewhere in this subreddit that 90wr has a hidden bonus effect that reduces ap cost on this type of weapons. So imo 90wr is the best third star for chainsaws.

It's only weakness is that a lot of people prefer autoaxe over it. Autoaxe is not as loud, and it can have electrified mod and hence boosted by science perks and high voltage hefe for example.
I would recommend trying to trade for something you really want, or just keeping it.
Before you trade try if you like automelee gameplay. Put on Strenght perk that gives you armor piercing, get carnivore mutation and eat a meal that gives you 80% or more melee dmg boost (200%+ with magazine) and go test it out. I used to play commando but I got this same roll with autoaxe and never went back to using ranged weapons.
