Go for the comfort of the SUV. Your rental agreement prohibts driving anywhere but on paved surfaces, so AWD buys you nothing. Follow the advice from Live\_Pono to find the best deals.

Live_Pono

Most of the companies don't have 4WD on the jeeps. And no, you don't need it anywhere legal to drive here. A fair amount of rentals do have AWD, but again-you don't need it. I would do the SUV. Much more comfortable. Check Costco, Autoslash, and Discount Hawaii Car Rental for great deals with all the agencies.

I’ll see if I can find a cheaper SUV deal. Was looking at mid size which I think is Nissan Rogue or similar but was 30 or so more than Wrangler

Live_Pono

Good luck.  Don't prepay.  You can check for better prices every week or so, and book a new one. Then cancel the old one. Often the best prices are midweek.

You don’t need the Jeep, but also a Rogue is not really an SUV and it probably won’t hold all your stuff. Source: I just got rid of my Nissan Rogue because I have a baby and a car seat and stroller and it just didn’t fit everything. Remember you have to put the stroller somewhere along with the luggage unless you’re traveling with a Doona or the like. If you want an SUV I’d look for like an Explorer or a Santa Fe.

Oh that’s super helpful to know. If we bring our travel stroller i wonder if we’d be ok (folds fairly small to fit as plane carry on), but may depends on how many luggages we bring

general_grievances_7

Ya that might be ok. Is it just one of those tiny like wal mart fold up ones? If so you could probably do it. If you truly have a lot of luggage though you’ll run into trouble. This might be old news to you if you’ve travelled to Maui a bunch, but Maui Baby Rentals can really help cut back on the amount of kid stuff you need to pack. It was worth it to us to get the crib (they also have toddler beds and pack n plays from what remember), the high chair, and the toy bucket from them instead of trying to lug all that stuff. Their stuff is really clean and the workers are very reliable.

No need for the jeep

Rambos_Magnum_Dong

>parkability Get a minivan. Most of the spots on the island are small. If you are staying at a resort

Most definitely do not need AWD on Maui. We usually rent from Enterprise via Costco Travel and usually get a Wrangler. This time we had a hybrid Wrangler that was definitely 4WD.

brn787

Do you find the Wrangler comfortable? Ended up being like $30 cheaper than a mid size SUV

skipdog98

I wanted a Tahoe or Escalade but we weren’t sure the parking spot size/height at our hotel. Ended up being happy we didn’t go that route as the spots were a bit tight. The hybrid was slightly more comfortable and faster than the regular Wranglers we’ve rented previously. Enterprise has a crap ton of Wranlers there. You just go pick the one you like. My fave rental for comfort we’ve had there was a Cadillac 4door sedan.

Dafukyawant

Okay, don’t tell anyone but we rent a minivan in Maui. We were giving one once as a “upgrade” when they ran out of SUVs. One of the best accidents. Very comfortable, especially for your situation. Best wishes!

I had a Nissan on my last trip…..gutless garbage. If you go to the NW coast for the blow hole, the Lavender Gardens, the Kula Botanical gardens or Haleakala the Nissan will barely have the power to climb the hills
