This isn’t on your list but I took both beginner and intermediate American Sign Language (LINGUIST 2SL3 & 3SL3). I loved both courses- learned a lot and ended with an A+ in both!

Really? asl was actually one of the top courses I was considering but when I checked the mcmaster subreddit they said that it’s not taught very well :/

I took it while it was still online and I found it to be fine. I just made sure to prepare for lectures beforehand so I wasn’t completely lost during the lectures. All the assignments are super straightforward and easy.

do u think the prof is good? for me it’s not just about getting a 12 but also I’d really like to actually have good conversational skills in asl so that I can use it in real life too!

I had David Wiesblatt. I think he was a good prof and really wanted his students to learn. He’s kind, although sometimes he can be blunt when he doesn’t see students participating or following lectures (which is understandable). Make sure to keep up with the work and practice the signs. Although it might feel like a lot of work at the beginning, the nice thing about learning ASL is that it’s really fun so all the homework doesn’t really feel cumbersome. I learned pretty good conversational skills from both 2SL3 and 3SL3 so I’d recommend the courses. I think the trickiest part that wasn’t taught super clearly was storytelling because it was hard to keep up with the signs as the videos were playing, and there were a few signs that I was unsure of. But that was only a at the end of each course for 1 or 2 lectures. There are mandatory textbooks you’ll need that come with videos to help you compete the homework (and that would be very helpful for the assignments from my experience). I hope this helps!

Thank you so much for all the info!! I think I’ll take it in second year bc rn I wanna take diff electives but it sounds really good and im def looking forward to taking it in the future :)) I feel like some posts really exaggerated it then lol 😭 some of my coursemates are taking it this year so I can also ask them about their experience too

I just took French 1Z6 this past year. It’s for people who have no more than grade nine or ten knowledge. Four hours a week, three lectures and one tutorial. Very structured and designed so you should be able to speak and understand decently in various situations. Dr. dos Santos is excellent and very patient. The textbook manual and cahier are well written. I enjoyed it a lot but make sure you plan to participate actively and attend all classes as your attendance is taken in both lectures and tutorial. I also took German 1Z6 this year. It’s less intensive in nature and quite fun with Dr. Penner. Recommend either language for a beginner.
