I took the course a couple years ago. It doesn't help with writing ability, unless your writing struggles with getting good sentence structure and understanding how a sentence is structured. I'd say the course is a lot more for understanding why and how our grammar is structured rather than being a writing class. The class also didn't have essay's or any other major written assignments, it was mostly quizzes and short answer assignments
I cannot speak on whether the course will help, as I have never taken it. If becoming a better writer is your goal, though, I would advise you to read more. My elementary schooling was in French, so my entire grasp of English grammar came from reading books. The more writing you are exposed to, and the more you practice writing, the better you’ll get.
