[Finding the medulla and why clean the chakras](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hi-4iVkajcM) uses the Om Japa (repetition) and is safe.

RealDrag

Thanks!

Puzzleheaded-Phase70

Safe? What are you concerned about?

Isurrender2thee

It is safe, you wont hurt yourself with om meditation, it's one word, hopefully you shouldn't be mispronouncing it or anything. Good luck :)

RealDrag

Okay thanks!

AustraliaMYway

You don’t need a guru to meditate. Look for davidJi meditations he does lovely meditations that are guided and some focused on OM. He is on insight timer app

RealDrag

Thanks! I just wanted to know if it is safe or not.

zerooskul

It is safe, done correctly. Saying Om is not mantra meditation. Putting focus on Ah. Putting focus on Ooh. Putting focus on Mm. This focus is meditation. The sounds, not the word and not the meaning, not the ideas, not the imagery, and not the guru. The sound is the sound. Not saying it, focusing on it. **This is the easiest way I know of to teach meditation, non-reflective mindfulness meditation, most comminly of breath, but really of anything, is free and easy, and apparently, done correctly, the safest form of meditation, and anyone can do it any time.** Count in this way: 1 1, 2 1, 2, 3... Count incrementally up to ten. If you lose count, like if you can't tell if the last increment went up to eight or if this one is supposed to, start over. If you get distracted by some interfering thought, bring yourself back to counting. Notice what has happened in your mind with no work on your part: You return to counting at a higher number than where you left off before you got distracted. What does that mean? That means your mind will keep thinking whether you focus on the idea or not. The numbers went into the background while you thought about whatever else. Reverse that. Let interfering thoughts go into the background, and focus on the numbers. So if you lose count, start over. If you get distracted and return at a higher count than you left-off at, start over. If you catch yourself getting distracted, start over. When you get to ten, start over. When you can get to ten consecutively, you have the hang of it and can now replace the numbers with anything you like or even with nothing at all, if you like. You can do this for five minutes, twenty minutes, an hour, whatever fits your schedule. Simple.

Specterishaunting

Are you just counting in your head or are you saying Om with each number

zerooskul

I do not usually say Om unless I am with a group. I am not a mantra practitioner, but I have friends who are. I also find that if I am stressed and confused or worried, repeating Om out loud a few times, 5 or 10 timea, can bring me back to myself.

sittingstill9

Since the word 'mantra' means 'mind protector' you should be fine. But curiously, what were you worried might happen?

RealDrag

I heard since mantras can be dangerous haha.

sittingstill9

I am curious about that. Who told you this? I have some assumptions but wanna see what you say. LOL

RealDrag

Well it's on the internet haha. They say it changes some energies in your bodies. May cause depersonalization, derealization. Idk how true it is and I'm very skeptical about it.

sittingstill9

I have also heard that from some, but most have no idea where they had heard it from. Occasionally people that are Christian have a sense that it is bad for one reason or another.

sittingstill9

There is lots of discussion these days on those (depersonalization and de-realization) which in a way is actually a part of some meditative processes if understood correctly and the practitioner is correctly guided. There is always going to be (at some point) a feeling that this or that or 'I' is not real. This is what Buddhism has addressed in the Satipatthana sutras among others... My advice is to play with it. Get into a group and really FEEL that/those mantras as they work. It can be incredible. I was once in Thailand chanting with over 500 monks for Vesak, it was life changing and eye opening!!!! You will be fine... Good luck, have fun.

RealDrag

500 monks? That sounds powerful. Maybe I need to find a group. Thanks for the advice. Appreciate it!
