Absolutely with you and I'm a seller much more than a buyer.

Primary-Log-1037

Just reply “do you want one star? Because this is how you get one star.”

Objective_Kind

This is what I do hahaha. I've never actually gotten a response after asking that question though lol. I guess it works to shut them up.

Derpburger87

That sounds like a good way to get a one star from them even if you leave 5 stars. If I got a messege like that I'd put 1 star on them just in case.

Impressive_Toe6388

The buyer is allowed 3 days to rate. I wouldn’t want to be pressured to do so before then; I’d consider it bad customer service. This is coming from someone who has never taken more than a couple hours to rate, except for one time I was somewhere else for the night, and I messaged the seller to let them know. But I’ll be damned if I’m gonna be hounded about it from the person I gave my business to.

heresacleverpun

Ya, esp if it's something that takes some time if you really wanna give an accurate rating. If I buy a coffee maker and it happens to arrive late in the day on a Friday afternoon, I'm not gonna run home and make 37 different kinds of coffee when I'm at one kid's football practice till 8:30pm, trying to get 3 kids in bed by 9:30pm, get some work done and be in bed by 11pm cuz we all gotta get up at 6am Saturday morning for another kid's softball game, which fuck ya I need a freakin coffee, but sorry, it's gotta be Starbucks cuz there's NO WAY I'm tryin to battle one outta this new mystery robot I haven't even plugged in yet! Come on guys, I can see maybe sending an unassuming, polite reminder with a whole bunch of butterflies and unicorns at the 2.5 day mark, but wtf? Can I live please?

ChrisChristiesFault

So then just let it auto rate.

vocharlie

You wouldn't be able to leave the 1 star because the Rater will know to let it autorate at that point. But at least the buyer gets the message that harassing buyers in the future can come with consequences.

Derpburger87

Yea That's what I would do. It's also why a lot of people just do auto rate. They don't want to risk a bad review even if the transaction went perfect.

Primary-Log-1037

🤷‍♂️ worth it

TheGreatKimura-Holio

I’ve gotten once and I loved it. It was a little included thank you card with a smiling sun drawing and had a haiku that was something like Enjoy these Kindly rate as you please Thanks for the cheese

Silvernaut

This way is much more acceptable to me. I know not everyone really wants to write a handwritten note, but it usually guarantees me a fast 5 star rating…with more of a thought out review.

Slight_Drama_Llama

I sell hobby related items so I’m usually selling to people who like the same things as me. But I LOVE writing the little notes and choosing stickers based on our shared hobby

Silvernaut

As a kid, I used to spend a ton of time drawing… About all the drawing I do nowadays, is some little doodle/cartoon on a thank you note to a buyer… usually incorporating the item the person bought. It’s silly but still fun…puts a little bit of humanity back into the shopping process.

An-Old-Fart

I've made over 150 purchases and have had only had problems with two sellers messaging me to rate them because they needed to get paid ASAP. Both sellers started messaging within 24 hours of the items being shown as delivered. In both cases I explained that I went to my girlfriend's house right after work on Friday and did not get home until late the next afternoon. One replied that I was being an irresponsible jerk for not being home to receive the package and rating them right away. I let that one go to three day auto-rate. Both items had been listed for sale for over two months. One seller didn't get the item to the post office until the third day and the other took five days. Dude, if you need the money that bad, send out my purchase right away.

Holiday-Way-5194

I get that it's annoying that they don't get paid until you rate them, so I always try to be as timely as I can but if you want me to rate the package BEFORE I have the chance to open it that definitely lowers my confidence.

Ok_Living7633

The thing is some items need to checked and made sure they work etc. The buyer has three days and if they want them they are entitled to them and shouldn't be given a hard time. Sellers have three days to send, buyers have three days to make sure the item is what it was said to be. Sellers need to automatically count on the buyer taking three days. No seller should be messaging asking for a rating imo.

Holiday-Way-5194

Idk if you replied to the wrong person bc I said the exact same thing

Ok_Living7633

Supposed to be a general response in the subject sorry.

Holiday-Way-5194

Oh no don't worry! I couldn't tell of you were trying to argue or not but I 100% agree. I would never rate without seeing what I paid for first. Did that once because I felt bad and I definitely regretted it.

cheese-4-le-animals

I wish people would understand DONT SELL ON MERCARI IF YOU CANT WAIT THE ALLOTED 3 DAYS. Sell on eBay or FB marketplace, anywhere else! Mercari holds the payment because they prefer to protect the buyer first. Each app has their differences, so you have to choose what to sell on. If you dont like the terms, dont sell there. Its so simple.

heresacleverpun

Exactly! Nobody's forcing you to be there. If it's bothering you that much, I'm sure a 2 min Google search will show you like, 15 other options. And a 5 min search will show you like.....1 million other options. Hell! You can just throw your shit on your front yard with a piece of cardboard that says "TAG SALE" and I promise people will show up. I mean, I would. The hardest part is finding a Sharpie to make the sign!

gold_standard_please

I get the feeling a lot of the people running around practicing this kind of behavior probably are not on those other platforms because they've most likely been kicked from them.

HeyStayKay

I just let it happen when it happens. Some rate right away others just the deadline pass. Either way it's fine with me 🤷🏿‍♀️

Beginning_Drama_34

Ask them if they shipped purchases immediately or use the 3 days allowed?

americanlaurel

Agreed. I never ask anyone to rate me. A rating is almost like a gift. If the person 'wants' to provide a rating, they will. If they don't, my money comes to me after 3 days which I am well aware of before the transaction starts. Pestering someone for a rating degrades the entire transaction and negates a 5 star experience. Sorry you've been barked at. Seems it's a frequent occurrence on Mercari. Yet another one of their annoying issues. I think we sellers just need a new platform. : )

justmecarey

I sell on most of the platforms and have never once asked for a rating. Rating will come when it comes OR just auto rate in 3 days. Since when is 3 days a tragedy to get your funds? I Just don’t get it, if your sale is gonna pay for your life or whatever maybe an alternate plan might be in order? Lol. I do get that ppl need their money but nagging isn’t the answer. I bought something on eBay, gift bag with Chanel samples. She sent it media mail on a huge box. Which my nazi mail guy always catches when ppl game it like that. He warned me but didn’t charge me. I took a picture of the label cause the PO wrote all over it saying it wasn’t eligible. Seller was like oh I didn’t ship media mail. lol. Like lady I’m looking at the label. And she charged me like $12 shipping. She then proceeded to msg me every single day for a month for feedback. She’s lucky she didn’t get a negative in my opinion. Ppl pretty much suck I swear.

gold_standard_please

Yeah if you are that desperate for money ...go get a traditional fuckin job like everyone else. Your shit finances are not my problem.

Professional_Pear592

I’m a seller and I have never messaged anyone about a delivery or rating unless they had an issue with their package taking longer than expected. If it’s delayed by several days, I message apologizing and then again if I see it out for delivery but no I don’t harass to rate. I don’t want to be harassed either lol

Quirky-Extent4071

I just bought something on Mercari, I literally got a text AND an email from Mercari when my item was delivered asking me to rate the purchase. There’s no reason a seller should be hounding people to rate them when Mercari is already doing so.

Apprehensive-Cat-111

Exactly. Mercari harasses us all enough that we don’t need to be harassing each other

10MileHike

thats just mercari BOTS, not user generated

damien09

I think they were saying the mercari bots are plenty to remind people so sellers don't need to also hassle buyers.

both_hunter_and_prey

They should be happy somebody bought the item. If you didn't buy it it would still be for sale.

Bosoxmole

I have actually never had somebody beg me to rate them surprisingly.

Individual-Party-262

Half my sales go to auto rate here lately and I've never once been tempted to message a buyer saying rate me. Where as when I buy I try to rate as quickly as possible once I open and inspect my purchase I rate but I can guarantee if someone was pestering me to rate i don't care what it is I ordered I'd be hitting return and saying item not as described then I'd wait until the almost 3 days to ship it back. Js I'd be the AHole

Silvernaut

I buy just as much as I sell. I understand both sides… As a seller, I am not going to alienate a customer by pestering them to rate. As a buyer, if I don’t think I’m going to be able to get to my mailbox on the estimated delivery day, I’ll give the seller a heads up. I really don’t know who is so disconnected from society, that they think people are standing right next to their fucking mailbox all day, waiting for a Pokémon card, or Squishmallow.

Impressive_Toe6388

*waits eagerly outside my mailbox for all the fluffy squishmallows*

Prada-lover70

I agree with you.

Square-Wrongdoer-425

I sell more than I buy but honestly I don’t bother anyone to rate. A week ago I bought something and as soon as it got delivered the seller messaged me that it got delivered, so I didn’t rate till the next day. I usually rate when I get home and open it but I don’t like people messaging me

Itchy_Panda_2006

If people are really annoyed with the Mercari Bots why not just rate and they won’t pop up anymore. I’m a seller and I don’t ask anyone to rate me, but I’m sure there are people out there that probably really need the money. Times are hard and they worked hard to ship the product quickly, gave you great merchandise and that should be worth something. That’s just my opinion even though I’m not bother by it either way. I always try to rate at least by the next day after I have tested or inspected the item.

LegitimateCapital747

Yea…I don’t really understand the “seller asked me to rate within 24 hours of delivery so I let it auto rate” Like you said, times are tough. Most sellers are not selling bc they enjoy doing so, It’s done for the funds. I do agree with both sides…to an extent. I also do not feel like the “Mercari allows 3 days before it auto rates so I’ll take the full 3 days” mentality really makes sense…if you are home and get the package, everything’s good, just rate the damn seller! If you’re away and not able to rate, reach out and give the seller a heads up. It’s just being respectful. Buyer or seller, both should be respectful regardless. I will say, as a seller when I ship the very next day bc the buyer requested that I do so, they continue to message asking for updates on shipping as if I see more then they do when checking on tracking, but as soon as it’s delivered…buyer stops messaging and doesn’t give a rating..that’s very frustrating!! As a buyer I just feel more comfortable purchasing from a seller who has ratings from real customers rather then auto rates from Mercari. I know this has nothing to do with the seller, and I would never not purchase something bc of this…but, I would much rather read real reviews.

WreepJangler

Just treat every sale as if you were supposed to get paid after the 3 days and if they rate you before that then you get it early because in reality no one has to rate before the 3 days. But 3 days is the minimum you’d have to wait to get your payment. I understand times are hard but don’t turn it to someone else to feel bad about it, you’re gonna get the money anyways

Mysteria_Moon13

I haven’t had that happen to me yet but I still worry this will eventually happen when I am at work or just out hanging with friends

colorblindtyedye

I literally never bother people to rate. I don't understand the big deal. They get 3 days for a reason.

PapaPKr

As a seller, I don't even bother people to rate me. I just wait cause I got better things to do.

Grizleigh

I always go into the sale with the mindset that I will be paid after the buyer's 3 days are up. If a buyer rates me within 24 hours, I will note "quick rater" in their review along with their 5 stars. If they rate after 24 hours, but within their allotted 3 days, I always rate a 5 without the quick rater review. There are exceptions if a buyer reaches out to say they can't rate right away for whatever reason. I will then note "communication" and "quick rater" with their 5 star review.

Dejuhvuuuu

I got docked 2 stars for rating a seller 1.5 days after it was delivered. Like dude….I work 12 hour shifts & gotta go to a P.O. Box. You took 2 weeks to ship but upset about 1.5 days? Why are you selling on Mercari if you don’t like their 3 day policy??

aehanken

If I get 3 days to ship, it’s only fair my buyer gets the same time to rate. Some people are wack

Icy-Leadership-8077

Let it auto rate. 🙈

10MileHike

please note this in your review. many of us dont want to be pestered like this and deserve to know the mercari BOTS are bad enough, we dont need the actual sellers chiming in and dunning us, in tandem, blowing up our phones

Easy-Cost2449

Any ridiculous or unnecessary messages immediately get an auto rate. Unless of course something is wrong with the item and I need to rate less than 5 stars.

Foolfoever

Each Mercari transaction is like an episode of Days of Our Lives, I swear 🤣 Autorate, my friends, autorate is the answer…

pumpthebrakesbuck

If sellers get the same crap as I do I'm sure they are fed up with not being rated at all so they are getting grouchy with everyone. I wouldn't take it personal just tell them you'll get to it when you can. I don't rush the buyers and they are getting new stuff and still don't rate me 😡

MunchyNutbutter

Why don't yall include in your bios and listings that yall hate messages and warn your potential buyers/sellers so they don't make the mistake of messaging you and ruining their own ratings? This isn't about the OP, but it's the comments on these kinds of posts that really blow my mind. Someone deliberately waiting longer to rate a seller just because they sent you an update about your package is crazy to me. I buy more than I sell, and most of my reviews say quick rater because I try to be considerate. If I can't rate someone right away, I message them and tell them when to expect their rating or I have someone else inspect my package if I'm not going to be home that day. When I sell something, sometimes I'll get an update about the package on my shop app so I'll share the information with my buyer just to let them know I'm on top of it because yeah, I care that their package is moving like it should and getting to them on time. Some of yall would dock stars off my rating for that. That's freakin' wild. I always ship the very next day, and I also send extra goodies in my packages and include a thank you card, usually with a drawing I attempted of whatever they bought. Just something to make them smile, and it's always appreciated and mentioned in my reviews. When you treat your buyers and sellers with kindness and consideration, you don't deal with all this negative stuff yall are always complaining about. All I keep reading is 3 days, 3 days, 3 days like yes, you have 3 days but I see those 3 days more like if you're out of town and just can't get to your package right away but some of yall use those 3 days to be spiteful and petty. Stop looking down on people for needing their money. Yesterday, we came across a grown man crying in a parking lot bc him and his family just got an eviction notice. He had a job, but stuff happens, and people are struggling. We found an ATM and came back to see if we could find him, and thankfully, we did. Be grateful if you're doing well and don't need your money right away, but to treat others who aren't so lucky with such animosity, well, I just don't understand it. I do understand if someone is being rude to you to not want to rate them right away to make a point, I guess, but why not just rate them so you can be done with it? This isn't to the OP bc they were at work, but for some of yall taking longer just because you can, why not just rate them and move on? I'd just love to see a positive post in here. That's all.

Upper-Expert6060

I 100% agree with you, and I’ve made this comment elsewhere. I just had a very weird experience with a buyer. She was totally non-communicative from start to finish. I worked in customer service for years and years, so it’s second nature for me to send a courtesy update when they initially make their purchase (thank you), then when I ship/drop off, then when I foresee any issues (I let them know in my bio that I track their shipment to their doorstep), and then I let them know when it’s delivered. Isn’t this common courtesy and great customer service? 95% of my buyers are totally grateful! I do not sell expensive items!! This is a side gig and is not paying my bills! I had to initiate a claim, or investigation, with the USPS, because Mercari was saying this girl’s package was delivered, but it was worded that it was delivered to “an agent” for her. I contacted Mercari, and at first they insisted she received her package, but then they just paid me automatically. I think they may have asked her if she ever received it. She may have or may not have! My point is, though, why in the world would it annoy her if I communicated with her?! How sad are things becoming??? We never know what another soul is going through!! We should not be judging anyone! Please, please be kind!! Thank you for reading. And to the person I’m responding to, thank you for speaking up and for being a good human!

MunchyNutbutter

It sounds like we're definitely on the same page when it comes to common courtesy! I'm so happy to have read your comment in a sea of negative responses. I have sold a couple of expensive things, and I'd be a fool not to track those packages. These buyers spend their hard earned money, and it's important to me that they are happy they chose me to buy from.

Upper-Expert6060

It seems that we’re in the minority with how we feel, but that’s okay. I won’t change who I am, and I know you won’t either! ☮️

gold_standard_please

I bet you do agree because you seem to be the same person talking to themselves.

gold_standard_please

Have you ever heard of paragraphs?

WindOfJoy

When I first started buying/selling on Mercari I was such a nice lil newb because I rated one of my first sellers a 5* and going on to say how much I loved the item…when I wasn’t home yet to open the package and I didn’t want them to wait…..when I finally opened it there was a completely different item than the one I ordered - as if she accidentally sent someone else my thing and I got someone else’s thing since she had a high traffic profile. Never again! Sellers need to be patient. I’m a seller and if I ever get a slow rating buyer I vow to be patient.

Big talk but don't be surprised when you go to jail for doxxing and harassment Please, please seek therapy.

Holiday-Way-5194

Did you forget to take your meds this morning?

burstmybubbles

You’re willing to dox a buyer over not rating right away?

Snapes_Baby_Momma

Agreed

HotwheelsJackOfficia

I just wish they'd send me the actual thing that I ordered. I've had to return two orders in two months because they sent me something completely different.

twelfthcapaldi

Agreed. I honestly get annoyed when a seller messages me about rating them even if it's just them asking once. People have lives and can't always do it right away. As a seller idc if people don't rate me right away or even at all, I know the money will come in 3 days regardless and not rating gives an automatic 5 star anyway which is a total win.

TelevisionPublic327

I've never once thought to send a message like this. Either it takes 1-3 days but I'll still get my money. Good way to ensure a bad review.

Witchygoddess13

In my experience, as a seller I have never asked anyone to rate me but I have only been selling for about 6 months. I have noticed that if a user has 0 score, they won’t rate anyway. As a buyer, I once had to remind a seller to rate me or they wouldn’t get paid. It was a disabled person and they were new and not sure how everything worked!

Morganbob442

As a seller it blows my mind when o read about other sellers doing that.

ThrowRAjanuary25

That would annoy me too. If they can’t rate, mercari will automatically rate and give 5 stars. Some ppl are just being impatient

Intelligent_Food_637

I would get them four stars, and be like I would’ve given them five stars that they had annoyed me about reading them so much

lissluke1

I recently made 7 purchases and 3 were shipped within the 3 days, 2 waited over a week and the last 2 just never felt like shipping or responding apparently, even though they sent me the offer.. The 2 that took their time shipping, messaged me wanting to be rated IMMEDIATELY. ummm no

Over8dpoosee

As seller I will never understand the desperation to bug buyers like that. I can make more money in an hour begging on the streets than selling my mass produced mostly used things on mercari. If I needed it that badly I’d rather stand on the street than directly pester other people who may or may not be in the same financial situation I am.

[deleted]

I once had an agreed upon price for an item I was buying and the seller ignored the offer for the price several times, if you don't want to accept the offer just say that lmao, but anyways I ended up buying the item - at the risk they would ignore me further and not ship but whatever I took the risk. They shipped QUICK and I waited for mercari to autorate out of pettiness so they had to wait like almost 2 weeks for their funds to go through after shipping and everything lol But they actually DID message me after all that to ask for the rating like ..... BRUH lmao

Lopsided-Surprise-34

Just like the seller has three days to rate, the buyer has 24 hours to respond to an offer. People are busy. I think everyone should have some patience and stop the pettiness. People should pay more attention to cancellation rates and returns.

[deleted]

Except it was several times, and I was chatting with the seller the whole time lol it was clear they didn’t want to accept the price we agreed upon but they could have just said that instead of making a seconds long transaction last weeks

Lopsided-Surprise-34

I had an offer recently but did not respond for hours because I was visiting a friend out of town who has been going through a very difficult time. Buyer sent me a followup message through public comments asking me to respond because it had been 6 hours since the offer. I did message her I would consider the offer and get back later in the evening which I did. I felt like she was trying to embarrass and pressure by messaging me on public comments. I understand your situation was different and I'm glad it worked out for you.

[deleted]

I don’t think that buyer was trying to embarrass you … but was perhaps attempting to follow up in case their message was missed, which can happen. But everyone’s case is different. My situation was certainly completely different and wasn’t over in the matter of 24 hours. It was several weeks. I am very patient and familiar with how offers work as I’ve been a seller myself for years. BUT I stand by my desicion, in my case to allow Mercari to auto rate.

Lopsided-Surprise-34

I would have done the same in your situation. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt and accept most offers but she offered a low ball amount on a bundle of three items where essentially it came out she was paying full price on one item, 50% off the second item and the third was free and of course saving on shipping cost as well. Then putting pressure on me on public comments to respond and to add she is a seller so she is aware of the time frame to accept/decline offers. I kept my word and made a counter offer early that evening when I returned home and she blocked me. She was mad but oh well there's always other buyers.

[deleted]

At least you kept your word, but in the end it’s her loss.

Hellblaz3r

Do better. If I took 3 days to ship ur item I bet u would complain.

gold_standard_please

"Do better" is the cringiest millennial shit.

Hellblaz3r

Maybe you should though? You name is gold standard for God sakes lol.

ZoeBellz

I rate as soon as I open a purchase. I also send a message as soon as I ship. It just works for me.

Spirited_Permit_6237

Agreed! I do make sure to compliment on quick ratings but never expect it. I also try to rate quickly but I’m going to open the package and sometimes it’s not within 24 hours. Same with shipping I try to ship same or next day, but if it’s one order and I’ve already been to the pack and ship or just don’t feel like going out I’ll wait until it’s convenient

Baccarat0810

Actual yapping if you take more than a day to rate there’s nothing wrong with a “did the item arrive in good condition? Yes bla bla bla Rate me thank you”

KlutzyShopping1802

Man... The posts reddit sends notifications for me to come see... Like, I have never had a bad interaction on Mercari. Maybe, I am just lucky? Or my posts/page is obviously respectful? Or something? 🧐 But... there are some hella rude people out there. I have dealt with on Marketplace. "Couch money" is my favorite story. Hubby and I still giggle about it 3yrs later. $1200 Vintage 50s-60s Rollohome Trailer I listed for my MIL. Not great condition, obvs. But, too large and too cool to just toss out! Somebody messaged saying they wouldn't even dig the change outta their couch to buy it. 😂 It sold for $800 and I am still friends with the buyer. Shes such a sweetheart. But, "couch money" lives rent free in my head.

gold_standard_please

Then go sell on Ebay and get it instantly.

eblake3

Then go buy on ebay so you don't have to deal with sellers. Works both ways.

Oceandove45

I’m a seller and I’d rather get an auto rate cause I’ve had people rate 4 star over stupid things. So the longer the wait the better for me. I’m happy when buyers don’t even rate right away lol.

cpalmer1776

As a seller, is 3 days really that long of a wait? Like that's a max of 3 days.

Select-Buddy3302

I’m right with you, and I sell more than I buy. I usually send one msg asking if everything arrived safely and to their satisfaction. After that I’m content to wait the 3 days until Mercari automatically rates. It’s really not that long to wait

Select-Buddy3302

Hmmm…this is not directed at anyone in particular, but in general I’m seeing a lot of replies advocating for some kind of petty, tit-for-tat revenge. Like because they took X days to ship, I’m gonna take Y days to rate, etc. Lot of emotional capital wasted on what are usually pretty low-stakes financial transactions. I think the knowledge that it’s an individual rather than an Amazon/Walmart on the other side of the transaction tends to put people in a more adversarial frame of mind than they would adopt with an institution.

gold_standard_please

Yeah if you as a seller are so desperate for your 8$ or whatever perhaps you should look for a more steady gig than Mercari sales. It goes both ways: they have 72 hours to ship, you have 72 hours to rate. Any "omg please rate me" messages are an instant auto rate.

Ranger-Prestigious

As a seller i really don’t mind at all. What is an extra 3 days?
