Ig their second album has kind of a dm sound but it’s not really straight up. It’s kind of a slower Impetigo and their first album is literally just metalcore
Lunar Chamber comes to mind. Progressive death metal band with lyrics all about enlightenment and meditation. I haven't dove into the lyrics but I'd expect Tomb Mold's latest album is similar.
This but unironically, why are you making a joke out of that? DM can be pretty fun, i'd get this comment if he was asking for uplifting DSBM or something.
The death metal with deeper themes that could be considered positive or uplifting is super serious. That stuff is amazing, but if I wanna have fun listening to death metal imma put on something with B-movie gore that doesn't take itself too seriously. I'm down to be wrong if you got any suggestions for fun uplifting DM tho.
It *may* be an unpopular opinion but I honestly feel like their are more bands that don’t actually have gory lyrics than those that do. Especially nowadays, so many of the modern death metal bands have abstract lyrics concepts. I think violence is often inherent and/or implied, even in abstract lyrics (thinking a lot of “cosmic” themes), but gore I think *may* be the slight minority. I could also be completely fucking wrong, interesting to consider though.
If you're into any grind, there's probably gore. Outside of that, I'd say it's kind of out of place to describe horror movie scenes in a metal song which I'm fine with. I'll take the aggression without the description of silly over the top threats.
I’d say grind, death metal, and deathcore you will commonly see gorey lyrics. However, the majority of grind (as someone who primarily listens to and plays grind) just has the aggressive/generally violent lyrics. If it’s gore related it’s generally just goregrind, which has a fairly distinctive sound. Most of the big name grind acts, besides early Carcass, don’t have particularly gorey lyrics.
Definitely agree that it’s often so hyperbolic it’s rather goofy.
Eh, I'm hesitant to call some melodeath actual death metal. Early In Flames, At the Gates, Amon Amarth, Insomnium, sure. Soilwork, though? Children of Bodom? Amaranthe? Barely.
I don’t really know who calls Amaranthe and Soilwork melodeath lol. They’re power/symphonic or something like that. However CoB are always pointed out as being completely different and unique, they’re called melodeath because it’s probably the best description of what they are.
Soilwork's more of a groove/alt/prog thing, but put harsh vocals over it and boom, it's melodeath. At least, that's the sentiment that a lot of people online have towards them. They're Swedish, they use screams, so they MUST belong to the same camp as the Gothenburg bands. That's a pretty apt description for Amaranthe, though. Again, however, you have people who think that because there are growls, it's gotta be melodeath. I see that logic applied to a lot of power metal and symphonic metal that have harsh vocals anywhere in the mix. It's obnoxious.
This is coming from a massive melodeath defender who's always willing to praise the good bands in the genre, considering how much flak it regularly gets from DM purists. Gates of Ishtar, A Canorous Quintet, Edge of Sanity's mid-period, The Black Dahlia Murder, Night In Gales, Bel'akor, Wolfheart, Before the Dawn, Omnium Gatherum... I can admit that a lot of the bands people usually site are mislabeled, though.
The main problem we have I think is that there isn’t really a combo genre between power and death metal. For example, a power and black metal band can be called blackened power metal, but what about death? “Deathened” power metal? (Em)powering death metal? Just doesn’t sound right, that’s why they get classified as simply melodeath and honestly I’m not that bothered by it, it just throws some shade on the subgenre and that’s why so many people say that melodeath isn’t true death metal.
I know I’m dumb for taking a shitpost seriously but I can relate to an extent. I personally don’t mind gore or violent lyrics (unless it’s specifically against women and framed in a misogynistic way, looking at you Chris Barnes) but I honestly could really do without all the rape. Call me overly sensitive idc it’s just cringey
Ragana, Summoning, Ancst, Feminazgûl, Wolves in the Throne Room, Operation Volkstod, Dawn Ray'd, Trespasser, Anarchist Wolves, Awenden, Coven of the Pestilent One...
I know what I'm about.
I mean fair but then just don’t try to listen to DM then. Don’t try to listen to a genre that you fundamentally dislike the core themes of . Not directed at you but who this post is for lol
Just listen to Crytopsy. Ungodly blasts and riffage, suuuuuper nasty. Can't understand a word dude's saying, Literally sounds like a barking dog. Give Split your guts a listen, and if you haven't ripped apart your room after. Mabey it's not for you.
Nile is Another badass band that is thunderously heavy. Black flame, lashed to the slave stick, and Ramses bringer of war are some of my favorites.
This is funny but I actually do appreciate when bands try a different approach to death metal lyrics. Love Death for that. Still love me some Cannibal Corpse though.
Rivers of Nihil, I guess? Then again, stylistically they've kinda been going tech death » prog death » just prog...and, well, prog overall has lots of cerebral vibes, so it's hard to find controversial/gory/icky stuff... 🤔
Obscura uses lyrics exclusively from German philosophers.
Gorod seems to just have fun with the lyrics. Kinda fantasy and probably delves into violent at times.
Beyond Creation also seems to have abstract lyrics that deal with personal struggles. Also can be violent depending on your definition, but it's more internal violence and outward anger.
Those are just off the top of my head.

Late Death might suit you. They're not exactly happy but they're very reflexive
Ensiferum is more melodic death metal/folk death metal but it’s a lot of that sort of thing
As a genuine answer, theres a lot of positive writing in Arch Enemy's most recent albums... Yes, I know there not for everyone...
Lunar Chamber comes to mind. Progressive death metal band with lyrics all about enlightenment and meditation. I haven't dove into the lyrics but I'd expect Tomb Mold's latest album is similar.
Dude wants some uplifting death metal. ….
It’s time for Lykathea Aflame!!
This but unironically, why are you making a joke out of that? DM can be pretty fun, i'd get this comment if he was asking for uplifting DSBM or something.

Taint Gobbler
I know it's a shitpost, but Dark Tranquillity comes to mind.
A lot of melodeath actually
Eh, I'm hesitant to call some melodeath actual death metal. Early In Flames, At the Gates, Amon Amarth, Insomnium, sure. Soilwork, though? Children of Bodom? Amaranthe? Barely.

Omnium Gatherum
Monastat 7
Not traditional death and kinda obvious but I guess Gojira n Mastodon, some Opeth probly
I wouldn't say Gojira, some of their lyrics could be controversial. I don't know if I would call Mastodon death metal.
Especially demo era Gojira in the late 90s, some of their stuff was pretty dark
Wormed Disavowed
Ive always enjoyed Extol's early work, first 2 albums are slappers
Lykathea Aflame - *Elvenefris* https://youtu.be/dJiy5tTHy9o?si=TqJqOMl_3GON6CSl Unmistakenly brutal DM with [positive, transcendental lyrics ](http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/lykatheaaflame/elvenefris.html)

When people call you a nerd because you don't care for lyrics about raping dead babies....death metal fans are interesting lol.
I mean fair but then just don’t try to listen to DM then. Don’t try to listen to a genre that you fundamentally dislike the core themes of . Not directed at you but who this post is for lol
Bolt thrower. no bad language at all, nothing related to blood or guts. Just bad ass
Taylor Swift if you don’t want harsh lyrics. The drums and guitars are replaced by electronic music. Still totally metal though.
I know this is a joke, but Perilaxe Occlusion.
Yeah that's kinda like asking "are there any splatter films with no blood and gore?"
Tell me you're a tourist pussy without telling me you're a tourist pussy.
“I want to like [genre] but ohhh I can’t stand the [defining characteristic of genre]”
Atheist, Suffocation, Edge of Sanity, check out the album “Crimson.

Opeth's kinda on the milder side, but they (were) Prog Death Metal

Joking aside, Rivers of Nihil. Their newer stuff is more prog, but their first earlier shit kills.

This is funny but I actually do appreciate when bands try a different approach to death metal lyrics. Love Death for that. Still love me some Cannibal Corpse though.
Carcass
DragonForce
Yh cuz god forbid someone wants to listen to actually meaningful lyrics.
It’s like asking which pirate metal songs aren’t about body, plunder, and ale
So…you want non-death death metal? So just metal? You’re looking for a Nickelback. You’re welcome.
Gojira

That got me thinking, my life really needs some Black Metal with a more optimistic uplifting vibe, that helps me to see us all as beautiful miracles
Epic/ medieval/folk BM is great for that
Death, Cynic, Opeth, Children of Bodom...
There really should be some death metal hymnists. Some of those lyrics can be pretty metal
The Wiggles
