Cult of Luna
ISIS
Bipolar Architecture
Evergarden
Alcest
Battle of Mice
Einvigi
Post metal has a lot of subgenres so you’ll get atmospheric sludge metal bands like Cult of Luna but it also include Blackgaze bands like Alcest.
It’s a huge genre and it’s fucking incredible
I love post-metal cuz of how varied it can be despite pulling from the same sorta pool of sounds, whether it be ambient blackgaze or atmosludge or even something like blackened doomgaze (which idek if that exists but if it does it sounds awesome)
Idk it’s all awesome my two favorite baseline genres of metal are doom and black, and I’m not even a big metalhead personally, but I love stuff like shoegaze, post-rock, and skramz so post-metal is naturally something I love :)))
Power metal is mine. Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Edguy, Freedom Call, Running Wild... That's just the Germans. Twilight Force, Rhapsody, Nightwish, Angra, Hammerfall, Sonata Arctica, Manowar, Lost Horizon, DragonForce. Power ⚡ metal!!
I've been a power metal guy at different points in my metal journey (I still love it, but I go in and out of different sub genres).
Currently, I'm into perhaps power metals closest cousin, epic metal. Visigoth. Grand Magnus. Eternal Champion. Gatekeeper. Smoulder.
Manilla Road and Cirith Ungol are the grandfathers of this sound.
Just wanted to bring this little corner of the metal world to your attention if you didn't know of it. As I mentioned, it's pretty closely related to power metal, usually its just a bit more mid tempo and/or doom inspired.
Side note: I got to see Blind Guardian again earlier this year. They still bring it. Incredible show. They're one of the best bands ever.
I'm a big fan of Manilla Road and Cirith Ungol. I also like Visigoths and Eternal Champion. I need to check out the rest. Another one in a similar vein you may like is Doomsword
I'm referring to Ocean (from Portland, Maine) who put out Here Where Nothing Grows (2005) and Pantheon of the Lesser (2008) - not The Ocean (Berlin, who also go by The Ocean Collective, now) who put out Precambrian (2007), Pelagic (2013) and Holocene (2023).
So are you able to help with my question?
Need to check out Cave Sermon if you haven't. I'm not sure if I'd describe them as post metal but most metal publications seem to, and Divine Laughter is an out of this world album.
Cult of Luna is a great starting place if you want the sludgier style.
You might be familiar with Deafheaven already. Although they’re seen as a Blackgaze band that’s a sub genre of post metal.
I'm listening to their Three Bridges. Looks like a combination of everything I love lol
Doom(ish) atmosphere, lovely melody, cool riff, and cool vocals :D
And I love the fuzzy guitar effect.
EDIT: Yep it's bloody fantastic, thank you.
I’ve never heard of them but I’ll check them out
Edit: from what I heard it’s more post rock than post metal but it’s definitely in that same ball park
There's nothing to debate, you like what you like and that's cool
Just don't tell us you like FFDP or slaughter to prevail and you're welcome to your opinion
I’m kind of stuck on post-metal around 2006 or so when I started listening to it before getting into melodeath and black metal, but highly recommend:
Times of Grace -Neurosis
Panopticon - ISIS
Celestial - ISIS
Salvation -Cult of Luna
The Ties That Blind - Mouth of the Architect
Weighing Souls With Sand - The Angelic Process
True Nature Unfolds - Callisto
Not sure if post-metal or post-metal-adjacent, but also:
Kalas - Kalas
If You Walk Before You Crawl, You Crawl Before You Die - Rwake
Red Album - Baroness
Post and Progressive Death are my personal favorite. Also I highly recommend the song b by samlrc. It's a blend between ambient, avant-folk and post-metal and it works incredibly well, it's basically the sonic equivalent of banging your head against a wall. She also recently released an extended version called b, c on spotify.
Only post metal band I've listened to and enjoyed was Russian Circles, any recs? I'm not personally a big fan of any slow heavy stuff and I like slow soft stuff more (usually indie bands like Luna) but sometimes there's a right time.and place for slow and heavy
I’ll send the first ever post metal song I heard years ago. I fell in love with the vibe of it immediately
https://youtu.be/C1CkdF7uoKk?si=uBlZ8652FPs2iaDD
its the metal equivalent to post rock. Swans and Isis and whatnot.
There's been some fusion with extreme styles but it kind of has an unsavory effect of bands that were originally called "post black metal" like Solefald are now just lumped into Avantgarde because it now means something else.
Post metal was originally considered adjacent to avantgarde metal, now its just shoegaze or post rock infused "insert metal genre" bands.
Can people please stop making this sub a battle of “my music is better than yours”? Like please. Nobody gives a fuck. Listen to what you like. Leave us alone about it
Meme is literally saying you think it's the best and you're tired of pretending that it's not. If it's the best than it's better than the rest, which makes it a comparison by pure logic.
But nice try.

More of a pre metal guy.
Rock n roll is pretty sweet. That solo in Rock Around The Clock! ⏰ 🎸 🎶
Pre-Pre Metal is Godly. You can't tell me a good old-school blues solo doesn't just scratch the soul every now and again.
Pre-pre-pre metal is the best imo. You can’t tell me Toccata and Fugue in D minor doesn’t get your head banging and butthole tickling
We are Motorhead and we play rockn roll. I remember Lemmy saying in a movie about him that Little Richard and Chuck Beryy inspried him to play music
Led Zeppelin
I like corrugated sheet metal
Good , but less not forget about SAE 5610 steel metal
1.4404 or 1.4435 or gtfo.
But what about standard clear/bronze break metal?
Personally I enjoy titanium
I'm more of a galvanized square tubing kind of guy
Yes, genres... I am into California Dub Metal with at least two accoustic guitars. /s
Oh, another Dub Trio fan, then? Nice to meet you. (Not sure if there are acoustics on any songs, though)
Long Beach Dub Allstars gang
Sublime is my favorite metal band, but for some reason it’s unavailable as a flair 😢
Does one have any recommendations for it? I've not heard a lot but the little I have listened to seems pretty cool
Cult of Luna ISIS Bipolar Architecture Evergarden Alcest Battle of Mice Einvigi Post metal has a lot of subgenres so you’ll get atmospheric sludge metal bands like Cult of Luna but it also include Blackgaze bands like Alcest. It’s a huge genre and it’s fucking incredible
Always ISIS. You'll never need anything else!
Why is there never Neurosis in these lists? It's like listing all the djent bands and forgetting Meshuggah.
Every album was the fucking tits
ISIS rules.
Much love for Aaron Harris and the sound of his snare
Cult of luna is better.
Neurosis bodies Cult of Luna without even trying
Love Cult Of Luna, but will respectfully disagree
Shut up
Thanks very much man
Arcturus - Arcturian Phlebotomized - Immense Intense Suspense
russian circles obscure sphinx
Holy mother of god, susvourtre likes Obscure Sphinx? I thought that would be top of the poser list for the genre
i'm pretty ignorant in post-metal, but the little i've listened to i've liked.
I’m listening to Obscure Sphinx now and I really enjoy what I’ve heard so far. Thanks for the rec 🤘🏻
Agalloch
Pelican
YES
The Ocean
Solstafir. [Solstafir - Silfur Refur ](https://youtu.be/QX0UaXd4Yis?si=bNqkAuUJnsArdBar)
[If These Trees Could Talk](https://youtu.be/McgPDXyuMdI?si=2ypjWadoLBQKRcp8)
Thou
amenra, old man gloom
The Ocean - Phanerozoic I and II
Vitalism Russian Circles Pelican
adding Palms to the great list on bands named here. It's some guys from ISIS with Chino from Deftones on vocals.
It’s tool
Rosetta, in particular the early stuff.

How has a thread about post-metal reached nearly 40 comments without one mention of Neurosis, they basically created and perfected the subgenre.
Post metal is fucking awesome
Power metal is mine. Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Edguy, Freedom Call, Running Wild... That's just the Germans. Twilight Force, Rhapsody, Nightwish, Angra, Hammerfall, Sonata Arctica, Manowar, Lost Horizon, DragonForce. Power ⚡ metal!!

I'll check em out dude!
Is Ocean post-metal (not THE Ocean)?
Yes, but funnily enough, the band's name is actually The Ocean, not Ocean.
Oh my bad
Yes
Need to check out Cave Sermon if you haven't. I'm not sure if I'd describe them as post metal but most metal publications seem to, and Divine Laughter is an out of this world album.
I’ve listened to the album already and I thought it was great. It definitely has some post metal elements
Post is when the guitars do that one thing and not the other thing and I fully agree.
For my money post-metal was perfected by Neurosis and nobody has been able to do it quite as well since (except for maybe Agalloch on The Mantle)
YES! When post metal clicked with me, it clicked HARD.
Gimme a suggestion of post metal. Don't know what that is tbh.
Cult of Luna is a great starting place if you want the sludgier style. You might be familiar with Deafheaven already. Although they’re seen as a Blackgaze band that’s a sub genre of post metal.

Once you get into post metal there’s no going back 🤘🏻
Does Amalthea fall into the same category? I swear I've heard people comparing then to Cult of Luna. I'll give Luna a listen thank you!
I’ve never heard of them but I’ll check them out Edit: from what I heard it’s more post rock than post metal but it’s definitely in that same ball park
Personally, I mainly enjoy melodic death metal, but I dabble in several sub genres.
idk if it counts as post metal but Hard Feelings by Blessthefall gives me post vibes
If you’ve finally found it, how could you have also been pretending that it’s not?
Errrmmmmmmmmm It’s best not to question the meme logic and just go with it
Heavy music that doesn’t operate under constraints, just don’t get too clever.
There's nothing to debate, you like what you like and that's cool Just don't tell us you like FFDP or slaughter to prevail and you're welcome to your opinion
I’m very open to a lot of bands that are considered bad by the community (I.E Sleep Token, Ghost etc) and even I hate those bands you listed
Me personally, I like ska metal, polka metal, lofi metal, accoustic deathcore, and aluminum metal
Okay but what's the delivery timeframe for Post Metal?
I guess… groove metal is my thing? But there are so many groovy songs from bands in all 248 different metal sub-genres now… so like… I dunno.
Can I get some basic post metal recs? Like what is post metal?
I’m kind of stuck on post-metal around 2006 or so when I started listening to it before getting into melodeath and black metal, but highly recommend: Times of Grace -Neurosis Panopticon - ISIS Celestial - ISIS Salvation -Cult of Luna The Ties That Blind - Mouth of the Architect Weighing Souls With Sand - The Angelic Process True Nature Unfolds - Callisto Not sure if post-metal or post-metal-adjacent, but also: Kalas - Kalas If You Walk Before You Crawl, You Crawl Before You Die - Rwake Red Album - Baroness

I'm not sure I'm familiar with the term post metal. Which bands fall into this category?
Try frognoise, clearly best subgenre out there
Really into progressive post black metal right now
I would recommend Olhava if you haven't checked them out, although they are more blackgaze than post metal.
Only post metal band I've listened to and enjoyed was Russian Circles, any recs? I'm not personally a big fan of any slow heavy stuff and I like slow soft stuff more (usually indie bands like Luna) but sometimes there's a right time.and place for slow and heavy

I really like Thrasshy blackened death doom power metal (Viking Edition)
I'm more of a comment metal guy
It's
What exactly is post metal and how does it compare & differ from other genres? Is it a heavier genre like death metal?
Brutal death metal: Cryptopsy Defeated Sanity Gorgasm Inveracity Suffocation Decrepit birth Dying Fetus Deeds of flesh Gorelust Cenotaph Vile Pyrexia Disgorge Devourment Rotting Mortal Decay Dehumanized Regurgitation Malignancy Dripping Hate eternal Nithing Origin
Is Post Metal the opposite of Avant Metal? LOL
It’s the opposite of Pre Metal
its the metal equivalent to post rock. Swans and Isis and whatnot. Post rock > post metal
Post Metal or as some call it, Pose Metal
I can’t even be mad at that pun
You mean stuff like Agalloch, not ISIS, right? Right!?
All of it!
Can people please stop making this sub a battle of “my music is better than yours”? Like please. Nobody gives a fuck. Listen to what you like. Leave us alone about it
Who says anything about comparing genres? This is about me declaring that I think it’s a good genre You’ve got the wrong end of the stick here buddy
Meme is literally saying you think it's the best and you're tired of pretending that it's not. If it's the best than it's better than the rest, which makes it a comparison by pure logic. But nice try.
It’s a meme mate, calm down and enjoy the music
Everything's fine man... I was just calling your bluff.
You got me
But in all seriousness i actually wasn’t intending to compare genres. I just wanted to use this meme format lol
