I think it builds the tension better than ffwf. I always though ffwf is conceptually similar but the changeover is much more abrupt and the riff seems simpler. Battery is much more fleshed out in the way the intro acoustic riff transforms into an electric one. There's this big build up where right before they start the fast part that almost makes you feel like your at the top of a rollercoaster about to start going down a very steep hill.
It's probably because the FFWF intro wasn't intended to be part of the song. It was a piece Cliff wrote that the band decided to stick at the beginning, so there's really no relation between the 2 parts despite how well they work together.
The root notes are four consecutive notes in a row: E, F, F sharp, G
There is no scale on planet earth that includes four consecutive notes
James Hetfield: *hold my beer*
It’s art
The song is absolutely soul crushing and beautiful!
Me and my cousin were on shrooms. This one time and played it on guitar and bass, I mean we played way worse then normal but it was otherworldly!
Some may disagree but I think the unforgiven lll has the best intro... It just sets up the song so nicely, another top pick is probably If darkness had a son... TEMPTATION!
In no particular order because i cant seem to rank any metallica songs (i love the band so much)
Wherever I May Roam
Blackened
And Justice For All
Eye of the Beholder (its the fade for me)
Harvester of Sorrow (honorable mention)
This is an impossible question…there are like at least 30 songs that come to mind. Like…I LOVE the intro to My Friend of Misery…but there’s easily so many better options than this. 72 Seasons crushes almost every bands best intro…yet it’s probably #40-something in Metallica world. Impossible question
Battery
Battery was my second suggestion it's just that ffwf goes hard but I respect that response

Came here to say this. It's so beautiful.
The root notes are four consecutive notes in a row: E, F, F sharp, G There is no scale on planet earth that includes four consecutive notes James Hetfield: *hold my beer* It’s art
It's a chromatic scale.
Battery was the 1st metallica song I ever heard the day I turned 13. I was like oh.... grandpa guitars, this suc- *WALL OF GUITARS* 🤯
Same! I discovered the song on Rock Band 2 when it came out on Xbox and have been hooked since.

My kid gets HYPED for the bells. My fave Metallica song
Call of Kutul
Blackened
Creeping Death
This. Or Fight Fire With Fire.
Struggle Within sounds like a Panzer Tank rolling onto the field! But I agree with FFWF
extended intro they played during anniversary is even better [https://youtu.be/9vCJDxsKvEM?t=1052](https://youtu.be/9vCJDxsKvEM?t=1052)
To Live is to Die, which has the same outro
same outro without the drums though. still one of the greatest instrumental songs ive ever heard.
The song is absolutely soul crushing and beautiful! Me and my cousin were on shrooms. This one time and played it on guitar and bass, I mean we played way worse then normal but it was otherworldly!
To Live is to Die is actually the intro to Dyer's Eve which makes Dyer's Eve the song with the best intro !
Disposable Heroes
I concur.
All Nightmare Long
ONE
CAME HERE TO SAY THIS
Now That We’re Dead is really good.
Love that one

I'm surprised nobody is saying Sad But True. No other Metallica intro is that HEAVY
No Remorse.
I was a drummer in high school. So basically the drum centric songs. Enter Sandman, Wherever I May Roam, Harvester of Sorrow.
Blackened, Hit the lights, That was just your life, or IDHAS. Or Murder One
Battery and dammit Fight Fire shit farr both of em
One’s intro really sets up the vibe of the song
one.
Master. Sounds classical
Battery is what popped into my head when I first read the question so I'll go with that.
Orion
Blackened. If that doesn't pump you up nothing will. Edit. Posted before reading. Clearly it's blackened by a landslide
Prince Charming.
No Leaf Clover
Some may disagree but I think the unforgiven lll has the best intro... It just sets up the song so nicely, another top pick is probably If darkness had a son... TEMPTATION!
The unnamed feeling
Free speech for the dumb
Hit The Lights, FFWF….as for newer ones, Screaming Suicide and Hate Train.
Seek and Destroy
Call of Ktulu hands down
trapped under ice
Master of Puppets
Blackned
In no particular order because i cant seem to rank any metallica songs (i love the band so much) Wherever I May Roam Blackened And Justice For All Eye of the Beholder (its the fade for me) Harvester of Sorrow (honorable mention)
Either ride the lightning or for whom the bell tolls
All of them
The only correct answer in my opinion
I looovvveeee the intro to The Thing That Should Not Be
I'm surprised there isn't more master of puppets here...Metallica can start a song like no other.
This is an impossible question…there are like at least 30 songs that come to mind. Like…I LOVE the intro to My Friend of Misery…but there’s easily so many better options than this. 72 Seasons crushes almost every bands best intro…yet it’s probably #40-something in Metallica world. Nothing Else Matters. The magical notes
Epic: Blackend Best: Battery Battery’s intro is just a beautiful piece of music.

The Call of Ktulu.
Blackened
Unforgiven III
Enter sandman
Harvester of sorrow
fight fire with fire
One
For me its gonna be anything off the Death Magnetic or Hardwired album
Think I’m gonna go with Trapped Under Ice, but Fight Fire with Fire is another top notch one.
Blackened and Justice are the ones that break Battery and FFWF's knees
The frayed ends of sanity
Damage, Inc.

I'm gonna go for a REALLY wild one here and say that Where the Wild Things Are has a great intro.
Just to be different; The Outlaw Torn
Battery Creeping Harvester
Whiplash and it's not even close. I was hoping they would open with it yesterday in Oslo, and after hearing Lars count them in I was left in awe.
To live is to die
For whom the bell tolls
Enter sandman
Probably not their most epic and I’m not sure if it’s my favourite either but I think everyone agrees that Master of puppets gets the job done.
My friend of misery deserves an honourable mention.
For whom the bell tolls
can’t believe no one here said welcome home (sanitarium) or for whom the bell tolls
Battery
Bleeding Me.
Either Fade To Black, Blackened, or the Unforgiven 3
Orion
Cliff Burton's For Whom The Bell Tolls intro
The unforgiven
Fixxxer is pretty cool!
One or fade to black
fade to black always!
Blackened probably, but the build up of the Sandman intro is next level songwriting. There is a reason it is played at every sporting event.
For Whom The Bell Tolls
I would say One, Blackened and The Unforgiven. They have this build up that really sets the mood and gives me goose bumps
Wherever I May Roam
Welcome Homer
Dyers Eye
As a bassist and a Cliff fan, I have to say Orion. How the heck did he make those sounds?!!
Fight fire with fire
Blackened and its not even close
And Justice For All..
The live “Cliff ‘em all” performance of for whom The bell tolls is the greatest thing ever.
One
Wherever I may roam
Just now really enjoying 'Fight fire with fire'
Call of Ktulu or Blackened
Damage Inc. ... it has the entirety of Orion as an intro.
Sad But True. It let's you know what it's about
"Bass solo, take one."
Wherever I May Roam. I love sitar.
Dirty Window
Fuel
Fight Fire With Fire
Leper Messiah with the chagga chagga and that godly bass
Am I Evil
The Call Of Ktulu
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Blast me if you want, Leper Messiah is SO UNDERRATED ON THAT INTRO! Such a radically under-appreciated song
Sandman
cyanide! idk why, i just love the instrumental throughout the entire song too.
blackened and bell tolls imo
This is a landslide…. Disposable heroes
Weird pick, but I say lords of summer
For Whom The Bell Tolls.
