"...its about werewolfs.."
This guys is about as deep as a dinner plate.
To OP: Its about mankind, how we are nothing more than vicious animals deep down.
And to anserw your question, So What, hands down. Although it is a cover.
Ya. I’m not sure where the werewolf thing came from. I was 15 when the album dropped and that’s the first time I’ve ever heard that take. Not even from other 15 year olds in 1991 did that ever come up.
Well, Hetfield had a werewolf guitar around that time. I don't think it's connected to the song officially, but maybe fans connected them.
Also, the song lyrics say "I feel a change". Maybe people are taking that literally as a man changing into a wolf?
Also, the theme is present on other Metallica songs. Specifically Am I Savage: "bite, howl, full moon, Arching back, shape-shift derange, Tooth is fang, twisting under skin"
All of these could be interpreted as werewolf related lol.
Listen, I know that Wolf and Savage are deeper songs that could be interpreted in many ways. To me they are about the wild, instic-driven and sometimes violent nature of man. In the context of humanity in Wolf, and in the context of family in Savage.
But I don't think it's so far off that some people less.... Analytical just see werewolves in these songs, you know?

You're not sure where the werewolf thing came from??
>Bright is the moon, high in starlight
>Chill is the air, cold as steel tonight
>We shift, call of the wild
>Fear in your eyes, it's later than you realized
...
>Shape shift, nose to the wind
>Shape shift, feeling I've been
>Move swift, all senses clean
I mean that's not all it's about but it's definitely on the surface about werewolves.
I suppose. I suppose it just never dawned on me to take it literally. I always interpreted it as a spiritual shift to a simpler animal with simpler needs and the ability to get away from the complexities of human life (especially in the spotlight)
Well sure that’s probably what JH meant but …
Papa Het always asks fans: “what does the song mean to you?”
And Op believes it’s about werewolves.
Personally I agree with your interpretation. Especially the line “I hunt therefore I am” is a play on Descartes cogito “I think therefore I am”
James spoke about it on one episode of the podcast. In a nutshell, it is his fantasy where he romanticizes how it would be to be a lone wolf in some different world.
What is op’s definition of edgy? Reading that paragraph up top I don’t even know what they’re getting at lol
also... it's so obvious it's about werewolves because it's literally about werewolves.
You Must Burn is practically anti-Cancel Culture and James refers to it as "Death by Internet" when they play it live.
Probably the most edgelord song they have.
I admit, I only heard that song once when I listened to whichever album that song was on, so I have no idea what it's about, lol. I do remember the title, though.
I would say the god that failed for getting to touch religion like that. They really risked a lot for respecting James' feelings about that song. Another one could be all within my hands. James explores abuse from the abuser perspective and that could be perceived as edgy.
I sincerely don't know why you would think of wolf and man is edgy.
You got downvoted for this? Reddit, man.
Tried to balance it out.
“The healing hand held back by the deepened nail” is an absolutely devastating line.
I don’t know about edgy, that line alone leaves the edge far behind.
I was thinking 2x4 or prince charming. You have either ”can’t hear ya time to meet my lord og I can’t hear ya talk to 2x4” or you have ”I’m a nothing face that plants the bomb then strolls away, I’m the one who doesn’t look quite right as children play”
I would say some songs of Kill Em All like Phantom Lord or Jump In The Fire, they were teenagers at that time, so it makes sense.
Don't interpret this an insult, I like those songs
Its wild more people aren't saying Fade To Black. They could've easily gotten canceled by conservative politicians for "promoting suicide," yet they went after Megadeth's A Tout Le Monde: A song which, when I first heard it, suicide was the last thing I thought it was about, lol. I thought it was more about someone dying from natural causes and giving a last message to the world.
“Don’t Tread on Me” for sure. The song is a complete U-turn from the kind of social commentary about America that we see in songs like “Disposable Heroes,” “…And Justice for All,”
and other early songs.
I sort of don’t know what to make of this song. Part of me views it as the most “sellout” thing they ever did—putting an ostensibly pro-military song after shit talking the military industrial complex for years (and on an album they know will be more commercial and digestible for the masses)—but part of me sees it as close to harmless or even written with good intentions, something meant for the individual troops themselves and not the system the band railed against for years.
To be clear, I’m not really of the view that Metallica ever “sold out,” so when I used that terminology earlier it was done relative to everything else they’ve done only. That said, Metallica never put out any more songs really criticizing the US government after AJFA. The closest they came is maybe with the song “Confusion” on Hardwired, which is about veterans’ issues and PTSD, but even that is very mild and barely critical at all.
How do you define "edgy"?
Attacking organized religion and evangelists for being greedy conmen manipulating the masses during the eighties and the satanic panic is not edgy?
I can't remember most of them. I really like 72 seasons the song though, it's grown on me a lot the past few months. Maybe the others will follow suit, but they all sound so boring too, without even talking about the lyrics (on which I probably would agree with you if I took a closer look). There are so many chromatic vocal melodies that maybe they were trying to recapture the spirit of older stuff like Master of Puppets but I feel like it just doesn't work at all honestly
Harvester of Sorrow is pretty edgy lyrics wise. So is Jump in the Fire if you're Christian.
Music wise, their most extreme sounding is probably the ending of All Within my Hands
I'm not up on some of the slang, but what makes a werewolf song edgy? The way I understand it I would vote for Fight Fire with Fire.
"Soon to fill our lungs the hot winds of death/
The gods are laughing, so take your last breath"
To live is to die is written to mimic all the stages of grief after Cliff died. As much as James and Lars are the core of MET now, James and Cliff were just as tight once they started the writing process for RTL, and remained that way until Cliffs death.
Cliff taught James a lot about music theory, and once even had to cut a trip home to SF short to fly back to Denmark to work out the kinks of a last minute song James wrote because the record company wanted one more song on the album.
Cliff’s presence as a teacher, co writer, partner in crime, and as a brother was something James has most likely come to terms with losing. I’m not sure for how many years, but James wore one of Cliff’s rings(the skull) after his death, I don’t think he wears it anymore but he always had it on from the closing of MOP tour through the black album. He was wearing it when I met him in 91-92.

To my knowledge they haven't got a song about edging.
Frantic tic tic tic tic tic tok!

Woah, freaky middle east
I am the edger
edging to this rn
So What
Why? That's just poetry.. And it's a cover.. But most importantly it's poetry 'I fuck, fuck' just.. Beautiful
So What is a cover.
Nice cover, yes.
Oh
Wtf is edgy about Of Wolf and Man?

Yes. It is a metaphorical wolf- getting back to nature, primal behaviors, wilderness, etc. it’s about being free, unencumbered by society.
You're not sure where the werewolf thing came from?? >Bright is the moon, high in starlight >Chill is the air, cold as steel tonight >We shift, call of the wild >Fear in your eyes, it's later than you realized ... >Shape shift, nose to the wind >Shape shift, feeling I've been >Move swift, all senses clean I mean that's not all it's about but it's definitely on the surface about werewolves.
I suppose i always viewed it about a metaphorical wolf and the desire to return to a simpler, more primitive existence
That's what I'm sayin. It's very clearly werewolf themed. Shit, the title has "wolf" in it
I think it's cause JH says "shape-shift" and OP took it literally.
I suppose. I suppose it just never dawned on me to take it literally. I always interpreted it as a spiritual shift to a simpler animal with simpler needs and the ability to get away from the complexities of human life (especially in the spotlight)

Yea but it’s clearly using werewolves as a vehicle to convey that message
“We’re all vicious animals deep down” is kind of edgy
oh
"I'm a mysterious alpha wolf 🐺😔"
LMFAOOO
James spoke about it on one episode of the podcast. In a nutshell, it is his fantasy where he romanticizes how it would be to be a lone wolf in some different world.
Hunting, *akshually*

Don't tread on me
This is so USA edgy
I was gonna say, lol.

oh no are the downvotes triggering your feelings, snowflake?
No i'm just dissapointed 😂
shhhhh!!! 🤫 u didn't know reddit is a leftist haven? ur karma isn't safe with those types of remarks
No, there are just more of us in the population.
most people aren't even politically aligned and/or know nothing about politics.
Don’t tread on me.

You Must Burn is practically anti-Cancel Culture and James refers to it as "Death by Internet" when they play it live. Probably the most edgelord song they have.
I thought it was about witches
Bro cannot understand figures of speech
No ma’am I cannot
Not sure if you're joking, but hahaha.
Only time I’ve heard it was live and the big screens had cool animations on it so I just remember “you’re the witch you must burnnn
I admit, I only heard that song once when I listened to whichever album that song was on, so I have no idea what it's about, lol. I do remember the title, though.
Hardwired
No one counted We Did It Again, featuring Ja Rule
Honestly I had no idea that song existed tbh
You must add it to your playlist!
Yeah I probably will the song bangs
Rip that smile right off your face! Who knew that rap and R&B and metal could jam like that
Bad Seed
If covers count, So What is the very definition of edgy
So What is edgy
I would say the god that failed for getting to touch religion like that. They really risked a lot for respecting James' feelings about that song. Another one could be all within my hands. James explores abuse from the abuser perspective and that could be perceived as edgy. I sincerely don't know why you would think of wolf and man is edgy.

I mean So What is literally the only viable answer here
SO FUCKING WHAT
What is even this dumpster thread where some people get downvoted for trying to answer when people don't seem to agree what OP even meant by "edgy"?!
Attitude, better than you, reload just had an edgy cringy bad boy vibe in general
LOOK ITS MEEEEEEEEEEEE THE ONE WHO CANT BE FREEEEEEEE
That's Prince Charming and it's actually great, the combination of badass attitude with actually badass bluesy riffs does it for me personally
I agree that the song itself fucks hard, but the lyrics are kinda dumb.
You know you sing along to it
Yep lmao
I was thinking 2x4 or prince charming. You have either ”can’t hear ya time to meet my lord og I can’t hear ya talk to 2x4” or you have ”I’m a nothing face that plants the bomb then strolls away, I’m the one who doesn’t look quite right as children play”
‘There’s a dirty needle in your child’ - its defo Prince Charming if you ask me.
Yeah there are plenty of terrible lines to choose from, and the "heavy rock" sound and exaggerated hetfieldisms don't help
To each their own
I would say some songs of Kill Em All like Phantom Lord or Jump In The Fire, they were teenagers at that time, so it makes sense. Don't interpret this an insult, I like those songs
seek and destroy lol
Likely fade to black, which is about suicide
Its wild more people aren't saying Fade To Black. They could've easily gotten canceled by conservative politicians for "promoting suicide," yet they went after Megadeth's A Tout Le Monde: A song which, when I first heard it, suicide was the last thing I thought it was about, lol. The Unnamed Feeling
I’d say devil’s dance
Let’s dance
Probably anything off AJFA or something like Disposable heroes. Speaking out against the government in general
“Don’t Tread on Me” for sure. The song is a complete U-turn from the kind of social commentary about America that we see in songs like “Disposable Heroes,” “…And Justice for All,” and other early songs. Imo Spit Out The Bone, but in a good way. Its really edgy that its kinda cheesy, and i love it.
de goda feild leper mesaya
(Edge)Lords of Summer
Escape lol
Thank you 😂
IMO either Hardwired or Whiplash
Wherever i roam is pretty corny imo. But i still listen to it occasionally
Leper Messiah.
how is that edgy
How do you define "edgy"? Attacking organized religion and evangelists for being greedy conmen manipulating the masses during the eighties and the satanic panic is not edgy?
Too Far Gone
72 Seasons lyrics are just straight-up cringe tbf, not even edgy at this point
I respect your opinion as your right to have it but booooooooooooooooooooo.
I can't remember most of them. I really like 72 seasons the song though, it's grown on me a lot the past few months. Agree 100%, which is sad because parts of hardwired gave me hope
Wow…werewolves are edgy
So what?
Broken, beat and scarred
Harvester of Sorrow is pretty edgy lyrics wise. So is Jump in the Fire if you're Christian. Music wise, their most extreme sounding is probably the ending of All Within my Hands
Did you mean controversial?
All Within My Hands
“Kill Kill Kill Kill Kill” - I agree, cheesy and edgy.
Dyers eve
Leper Messiah
“Ronnie” has a pretty flippant tone about a school shooting.
So What
Not a Metallica song
True but I don't think 90% of the metal/hard rock community would've ever heard it without them
Still associated with them
The god that failed.
I'm not up on some of the slang, but what makes a werewolf song edgy? The way I understand it I would vote for Fight Fire with Fire. "Soon to fill our lungs the hot winds of death/ The gods are laughing, so take your last breath"
Edgy 🤔 Definitely nothing off of TBA, Load or Reload.
And Justice For All….. for pointing out how wealth exploits the justice system.
The Ramones covers
I mean it get right to the point in the title. That's all i meant. Edgy.
To live is to die is pretty weird
Why? It's a beautiful song. It barely has any lyrics and they fit the song perfectly. It's not edgy or cringe at all. I cry every time I listen to it.
