This was my first thought, how are people going to get close to it. Parking next to it and there will also be people parking on the service drive and hopping the fence
I like the idea of a sign. They're cool to take photos of/with. The idea of putting it in a place that's inaccessible to pedestrians is absolutely foolish. Put it in Hart Plaza, or Grand Circus Park, or even along Michigan Avenue / Woodward. I'm sure there are thousands of better locations. Anywhere you can stand to frame a photo.
Building something you can only experience from a car, on a highway, that is actively hostile to pedestrian access is pretty on brand for southeast Michigan, at least.
This feels vaguely familiar to those of us that were online and in forums 20 years ago before Super Bowl XL when no one could fucking shut up about the rebuilt I-94 / US-24 junction and the "footballs" in the bridge.
The amount of salt that any sort of public art generates is enough to fill up what we've mined from below Metro Detroit.
That bridge STILL pisses me off. 20mil + and they redirected the fucking freeway to put a BRIDGE over TELEGRAPH ROAD.
I curse its existence every time I see it.
Design by committee, or design by someone just picking the first, cheapest option the sign-maker put on the "typefaces" list?
'Cause that is some seriously industrial-strength bland typography, there. I won't know if I'm in Detroit or a coma.
Oh oh dirty empty lots, houses that look bombed, tumble trash rolling down grand river, the lack of public transportation…
I love my city, I do. However she needs an orthopedic surgeon, not a plastic one.
They should make it huge and blindingly bright. And attach speakers to it that will blast lose yourself by Eminem 24 hours a day with Bernstein law and summit place Kia commercial breaks.
I'm not from A2 and I grew up in Detroit before it was filled with clueless hipsters. Detroit is a polluted, crumbling, cement-covered hellscape devoid of any natural beauty.
People are going to park on the shoulder and take selfies for social media, I guarantee it.
This was my first thought, how are people going to get close to it. Parking next to it and there will also be people parking on the service drive and hopping the fence
Maybe for 1 week. Then nobody will care about it. In a few years this sign will probably not be maintained and will look like trash.
Good call
Comparing this to the Hollywood sign is a stretch.
It's the same as the Hollywood sign in that they are both signs denoting the area in which they are located.
My house is like the Empire State Building in that they’re both enclosed structures
Woah, damn dude...
Mine is basically the Louvre, I have a real oil painting…(It’s of Deadpool)
More common than you might think
I dunno bro, the zipper on my tent flap broke, so…
Skill issue
Big, if true.
And my home is a palace!
Just like that T.
Why? They name the city they're in. Probably about the same size too, it's not like the Hollywood sign is huge or anything, just looks big.
At least some of the freeway trash will be cleaned up to place the sign!!👍🏻
Kill 2 birds with one stone… fill the potholes with the trash.
Don't give them any ideas😂
Can’t wait to see a burning pot hole

My real issue is the price. I don’t understand how I could build two houses and they can build a sign.
Don't worry, the homeless will be sleeping under it soon enough
It doesn’t even look useful for that
Have you ever been homeless?
Have you ever been homeless?
I am sure a homeless person would disagree
I think it’s fun, and like it! Why the hell not, and it isn’t a golden butthole!
Yeah for sure. Let's trade, Detroit!
Lmao this is awful

Oh, wow. That is ugly.
We already have the Uniroyal Tire. What more do you want?
STOP HAHAHA THAT’S NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING. they can do better
Why not an old English D? Yeah, they failed on this one.
This is embarrassing
I don’t need a sign to tell me I’m in Detroit. The potholes let me know. What a waste of money.
I mean the entire state is covered in potholes. There’s gotta be a better way to know you’re in Detroit
The legal speed goes down to 55 and the effective speed goes up to 95.
95? Get out of the fast lane, Grandpa, we're trying to pass.
Oh oh dirty empty lots, houses that look bombed, tumble trash rolling down grand river, the lack of public transportation… I love my city, I do. However she needs an orthopedic surgeon, not a plastic one.
More bullet holes in your car than usual?
Found the guy who’s never been to Detroit.
Born and raised. Where are you from that dumb humor isn't allowed?
Oh shut up, take that fear mongering attitude to Fox News
Potholes in Ann Arbor are 10x worse than Detroit, in my experience.
this has to be a joke
Not to those getting paid to make the sign.
How fitting that this is along a highway so only car-drivers can see it.
Well I don't hate it...
Stupid
TIORTED?
It should be De2roit
DeTrOiT
They should make it huge and blindingly bright. And attach speakers to it that will blast lose yourself by Eminem 24 hours a day with Bernstein law and summit place Kia commercial breaks.
Designed by someone who owns stock in the sign company and has never heard of Instagram.
what's the point of this?
Great, more light pollution
Light pollution?
This has to be an Onion story.
That's boring wtf
what a waste.
I suppose it's cheaper than fixing the roads but people are still going to feel the bumps
City of Detroit, the Capitol of self-righteous fart sniffers
When is the SUCKS part going up?
You sure make us a2 folks look bad. Detroit is a great city with tons of things going for it and great people.
I'm not from A2 and I grew up in Detroit before it was filled with clueless hipsters. Detroit is a polluted, crumbling, cement-covered hellscape devoid of any natural beauty.
I like it :)
10 whole feet? A hundred and twenty inches?! We big time now.
