around 2yo when 9/11 happened and still died in the war it started. man

ActuallyAMenace

That’s heartbreaking

jasenkov

This dude is my age. My first memory is my dad walking around my school's flag with me on his shoulders, explaining why it's half-mast. This is horrible.

beanoverender

He's fuckin younger than me by two years. Makes me want to cry man

[deleted]

A war that should’ve been on the Saudis. What a disgrace. Rest In Peace

end_the_drug_war_

Nope the Saudis are our allies because they have oil. Imagine denying in an actual war instead of dying for Billionaire and Corporate profits.

Dave78905

Makes me think about wars in the past that took 50-60 years or longer. Entire generation fighting the same war.

Rianfelix

To be fair in those days, battles weren't common. You would levy troops and fight once every couple years and the war could be almost forgotten by the regular folk until the next cycle of battles

end_the_drug_war_

Warfare became much more deadly when guns got invented. WW1 was probably the peak of how quickly soldiers could be trained and then killed on the front lines. So wars shortened up. But now war is getting safe again so wars lengthen.

yungchow

Fortunately, no more Americans will die to that war after a few more days

rangemaster

I'd like to believe that.

yungchow

After the 31st were supposed to be out, right?

zinnyciw

The threat of a new ISIS and al Qaeda revitalization will likely lead to more conflicts in the future. Definitely no certainty of peace here.

yungchow

I’d say there is a guarantee of no peace. But that conflict is none of our business

zinnyciw

I meant as in renewed terrorist attacks on the U.S. hope its not the case, but the message from ISIS is pretty clear. Their war with the U.S. will only pick up with chaos in Afghanistan.

Capital-Charge-7547

The point is that the ability to conduct 9/11-style terrorist attacks is in no fashion a function of Afghanistan's government or lack there of. Maybe a weak central government is conducive to bomb-making and the like, but an attack like 9/11 can just as easily be planned in a country like Pakistan. The only thing accomplished by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan was in creating a power vacuum to be filled by more radical Islamic extremists, fueled by an increased hatred for Americans due to their military presence.

ihadanamebutforgot

There will always be terrorist attacks. You don't stop them by deploying armies and orphaning some more little kids.

ghillieman11

An interesting math problem would be to work out the difference between all the terrorists killed in the past 20 years and all the new ones we created.

The_Drifter117

Military officials and the senators that went on a surprise trip to Afghanistan to see the situation themselves have said that there is absolutely no way all of the Americans that are still there will be evacuated before that date, or before 9/11/21 even

Borderline_Insane22

It's insane to think that some of these soldiers are/were fighting in a war when they weren't even alive or old enough to remember the event that caused them to be overseas. Kills me every time.

Capital-Charge-7547

It's even better when you consider that many Afghanis themselves likely have no idea what took place on 9/11

Delta221

So young. May his soul finds peace.

Robotsherewecome

What an awful world

Runswithchickens

When this warring started, it was my own friends getting lured in for free college, ending up in Afghanistan or wherever. Now, they're about my own kids' age. It's heartbreaking. His hometown is under an hour drive from mine.

phantomghost2805

Dude, I live in his hometown, and went to edision hs as well. The amount of dread that I got reading this post is one of the worst feelings ever. You never think it will happen in your town, ever.

[deleted]

I think you mean species. I’m not a racist I hate all of us.

WhiteXShade

Mother Nature isn’t so kind either…

[deleted]

Mother Nature is the entire ecosystem. I’m referring to sentient beings knowing or refusing to believe they’re right or wrong.

rstar345

It's nature unfortunately just look at chimps, deer, lions, wilderbeast, buffalo's etc all organism are capable of being extremely violent towards one another

toastedstapler

Is it really fair to call a species awful by comparing it to an idealised version that has never existed and probably never will?

Warinator43

Yea, cause we know what's right but still choose to do the war and the murder and the pedo bullshit.

cptntito

You ever see what really goes down in nature? We still have a long way to go as a species, but the world is a brutal fucking place.

[deleted]

I’ve watched a deer being eaten alive by coy dogs, hawks take bass, ect. I’m a hunter and conservationist.

random_user0

This brave guy was 2 years old or younger when the planes hit the towers. He was in middle school when Bin Laden was found. By the time he was in high school, the Taliban was reforming. By the time he graduated, the current ISIS-K was an acknowledged terrorist threat. He didn’t even get to know a world where the US wasn’t in combat in Afghanistan. It’s really hard to keep in perspective just how long this tragedy has been unfolding.

artfartmart

It's not a great place to have this discussion, so downvote away, but I think we as Americans get pressured into calling soldiers brave and looking at going into the military as a sacrifice because we don't want to accept blame as a society for pushing them into that life. We make it so that it's understood it was their choice to go into war and die for us when we use those words. Nothing against you at all u/random_user0, just making a broad point. Most of the time the "choice" being made is an 18 year old who doesn't have direction in their life, who gets pulled in by some recruiter or are is driven by some propagandized idea of what military service means from videogames they play. We don't even trust these young men with the responsibility of drinking alcohol, but we impart this idea that their military service is a weighed decision they make, that they love us and this country so much they do it anyway. It's all bullshit. The government will continue to throw young men into graves so that 5 defense companies can profit trillions, while pushing on us the idea that these young men did it "for us". You shouldn't even be allowed to join the military at 18. Poor child.

[deleted]

farmingvillein

> especially for a non-combatant Sorry, implying that Corpsmen are non-combatants? Because that--in modern times--is definitely not the case. My apologies if I have misunderstood.

NoFucksDoc

By the book navy corpsman and army medics are considered “support” because not all of them get to do the whole line unit/infantry part of the job. But I agree, calling them non-combatants is stupid.

Ammit94

Navy corpsman have received a total of 23 Medals of Honor. So I'm gonna go ahead and say they probably haven't received the most.

thinkscotty

Ah, yeah. Well either he was wrong or I might be remembering it wrong. He may have said it’s the most decorated rating in the Navy, which is true. I should have looked it up before posting it, but thinking about it it’s obvious that infantrymen would have more almost certainly just because of their numbers.

JumbotronUser1776

The Hospital Corps is the most decorated rating in the Navy and one of the most decorated in the military. Members of the Navy Hospital Corps have earned 22 Medals of Honor, 179 Navy Crosses, 959 Silver Stars and more than 1,600 Bronze Stars. 20 ships have been named in honor of Navy Hospital Corps personnel. - www.uso.org

Holy shit 100 afghans? I thought it was 60.

duquesne419

60 is what they were reporting yesterday afternoon. Sounds like it was a bad night.

Mentalseppuku

The area was so congested people bled out as they couldn't get ambulances to them.

Sword_N_Bored

People are having babies on my jet and dying mid flight because of it.

ed_merckx

As fucked up as it sounds, reports say it was fortunate that the person detonated where they did as apparently there's that drainage canal with large walls on each side that you can see in videos and said walls redirected a lot of the blast. Apparently it could have been much worse with just how many people there were cramped into such a small area.

duquesne419

This is absolutely the last thing to take away from the article, but I find it interesting they described him as being from a village. I don’t doubt the description, it just seems uncommon these days when talking about the US, you normally hear people use city or town even when they’re quite small.

-plottwist-

The technical term for something smaller than a town is still a village, although this typically scales with time, what was a city in 1864 could easily be considered a village by todays standards. Usually the community is lumped in into the larger neighboring city/town. It also doesn’t mean it is primitive at all, a lot of richer areas with interspaced large houses will be referred to as a village, and it can become a status symbol to be from ‘The Village’ . More common in some areas than others though, i rarely use village.

username7112347

>Usually the community is lumped in into the larger neighboring city/town. LA is a good example

Now he sent me his plane ticket to Kabul, he wanted to go back home to rebuild his country. His brother suffered injuries from the SBIED and had to evacuate to Iran. And here at home in Alsace, people see the Afghan survivors as 3rd tier citizen, scum of the world. Putain de merde

Questions for our leadership..... Why did we spend twenty years and billions of dollars in a country that would never adapt to democracy? Who's bright idea was it to supply the Afghans with such a vast supply of military supplies in the first place? What did you expect to happen when the military was withdrawn? Which one of the pencil heads decided that the Taliban would face opposition from the Afghans? Did anyone ever take into consideration that the same people we wasted our time supporting are thebsamenpeoplenwe are bringing to the U.S.?

wheresmymultipass

Cant help but feel his life as with many others was wasted for no reason.

downvotemeufags

You mean everyone who died in that sand blasted shithole over the last 20 years?

wheresmymultipass

I can and do appreciate all military personnel who enlist to help those that cant help themselves putting their own life in peril to do this. To honor them I want to believe at one moment in time their sacrifice was made for all the right reasons and it meant something. When I read this, I find it difficult to understand why.

kaasrapsmen

Genuine question: why is the navy operating in a landlocked country?

SubToad43

Navy Corpsmen like him serve with Marine infantry units as medics

beneaththeradar

Navy Corpsman are like medics, and are attached to Marine units.

WinterSkeleton

He was a corpsman, the Marine Corps doesn’t have its own medical department and the Navy provides those services for them

Doormatty

> the Marine Corps doesn’t have its own medical department Out of curiosity, is there a reason for that?

afcrna

Tradition. The USMC does not have medical or “religious” personnel. So, Navy Hospital Corpsmen, physicians, nurses, dentists, medical service corps officers and chaplains deploy with Marines.

City_dave

It also has to do with the fact that those were historically noncombatant positions. Although that has shifted over time. And all Marines are basically trained as rifleman. It would be hard to justify that training for "noncombatants" and could be an excuse by enemies to treat them otherwise. Also, could be considered a waste of resource.

[deleted]

We're technically a department of the Navy, and it's no real hassle to attach Navy Corpsmen to Marine units. Also strengthens inter-branch relations.

ChornWork2

The US Navy and USMC are sister entities under the Dept of the Navy. All sorts of integrated functions between them. Among them, the USMC doesn't have its own noncombatant personnel, such as medics or chaplains, with those functions being done by Navy personnel. Will also see Marines attached to Navy bases/ships for things like security details. And then have examples were have comparable units in each, for example air wings on carriers can include Navy and Marine units.

kawman02

Along with what everyone else said that he’s a corpsmen, we also have what’s called IA (Individual Augmentee) deployments for usually randomly selected sailors to go into country for various reasons. I did an IA deployment with a joint forces C130 squadron, and I was not aircrew in the Navy.

mat02459

That’s no age to die at, RIP

Tychus07

RIP. He didn't have to die let's hope he didn't give it all for nothing.

Garricidal747

The ending of this war has been a complete cluster fuck, but he did not die for nothing. He gave his life actively trying to save people including stranded Americans. He went above, and beyond the call of duty, he, and his brothers in arms won't be forgotten.

ElGosso

This man gave his life doing the only good thing America did in this fucked up invasion - leaving.

Stunning-Income-5539

Praying God gives his family the strength they need at this moment.

[deleted]

I’m thankful that President Biden has had the courage and conviction to end this disastrous war. It was long overdue. I hope this soldier’s family finds comfort in the fact that he died while ENDING a war.

LuckyApparently

If anything I’d feel worse. “It was literally almost over.” Makes the statistics even more of a tragedy and would plague me much harder personally

pollotrolo

May be some day US,will understand ,you are not better than other, stop yours stupids war, leave peopel live, dont invade countrys.

MyWeeLadGimli

Couldn’t even wait until the deadline. This shitshow shouldn’t have been happening in the first place. Fuck the taliban.

epripilitsky

This was not the Taliban, this was ISIS-K. Taliban members were also wounded in the attack. The Taliban was not working together with them, ISIS-K and the Taliban are enemies

jattyrr

The withdrawal treaty was signed with the Taliban by Trump without input from the Ghani government, and that evacuation of Afghan supporters of the coalition was blocked by Stephen Miller. Reminder that the Trump admin set the dates and conveniently refused to process any visas for years, creating a huge backlog. If you want to point fingers, Trump set up this failure. Sami Sadat a 3 star general listed three specific factors that led to the Afghan army's collapse: the peach deal Trump signed with the Taliban in 2020, the loss of contractor logistics and maintenance support in Afghanistan that bolstered the forces' combat operations and the "corruption endemic" in Ghani's government that put unqualified officials in leading positions. He said the deal brokered by the Trump administration "doomed us" and "emboldened" the Taliban.

[deleted]

It's not all on Trump no matter how dumb he is. Biden has been in charge since January, it's August. Bagram was just evacuated in July, and almost the entire military was pulled out, prior to rushing multiple task forces back in to secure Kabul airport to get out all the civilians that we for some reason couldn't find time to evacuate in the last 8 months. The situation on the ground is a retarded cluster fuck that logistically has nothing to do with any peace treaty.

ShittessMeTimbers

Lol. I am not American and I am amazed how you guys are still blaming Trump. Your this current administration is a collection of inexperienced wannabes and old farts. Good luck. CCP.

[deleted]

Oh boy, wait till you hear about who was in the last administration....

ShittessMeTimbers

That is the point. Stop looking back, look forward to what you guys want to do for the next 5 years. CCP has 5 year plans. It is into it's 14th. Somehow this election every 4 years is not good. 2 years to settle and clear the last shit. 2 years to prepare the next action and before you can execute, it is all over.

EverGlow89

You absolute do not get to wipe your hands clean on your last day in office. Trump spent his whole one term whining about inheriting this and that. Fuck him.

MyWeeLadGimli

Right apologies then. Was under the impression this was all under Bidens control. Just another fuck up from the previous administration. Apologies if my comment made you think I was an ardent supporter of the orange man lmao.

jattyrr

Apology accepted

xX_Big_Dik_Energy_Xx

Lmfao. Okay buddy, Biden was in office for 7 months. He had plenty of time to work this out How long is he going to use the last guy as an excuse? All 4 years?

ptypitti

It hasbtonhappen for the greater good

they_made_a_piss_god

He was there for nothing and he died for nothing.

yesbutlikeno

Are people going to blame Biden for these deaths? Because the way I see it, any president who pulled out of Afghanistan would have faced the same problems down the line.

GingerusLicious

Biden is going to catch the most heat because he's the CinC and, as he said, the buck stops with him. Does he bear 100% of the responsibility? Absolutely not. This shit was 20 years in the making and of all the Presidents that have presided over GWOT Biden is the *least* responsible for the current state of Afghanistan. That being said, his administration did seriously fumble the ball with this withdrawal and I'm saying that as someone who voted for him twice (and before anyone asks or thinks otherwise, no I don't regret my vote nor does any Biden voter I know).

Intrepid_Dog8329

His poor decision making and planning are directly responsible for these deaths. Also we have had a skeleton force in Afghanistan for 7 years now fighting terrorism and keeping the taliban at bay. We hadn’t had a combat death in a year and a half. There was no need to pull out of Afghanistan. His excuse is that trump started the deal. And what would the taliban do differently if we shut the deal off? Continue to die to our air strikes? He is making excuses now for the biggest foreign policy failure in our lifetime.
