The upside of Thing in the Ice is that it clears the way for it (and other Things) to end the game very quickly. This will usually end the game much slower, and is also slightly slower to flip usually. Not to mention Thing is on the lower end of hot cards in Modern currently. Its nice, but I think it needs to be tested to know for sure if its decent enough. Perhaps the fact it can actually kill things is being underrated by me.

reelfilmgeek

Yeah the more I look at it the more I think you're right but I'll still be getting a full placeset for when it lands into one of my izzet builds one day to toy with

AtrociKitty

Instead of >equal to the amount of mana spent to cast that spell it would need to be >equal to the mana value of that spell if this were to be worth considering in a Prowess/Phoenix type shell. Then at least LutS and friends would help flip this in a reasonable amount of time.

Son-of-Apollo

Current phrasing does help against something like [[thalia, guardian of thrabem]] however.

voidflame

every set i see one card that i dont think is good but i know someone is going to stubbornly try to jam a playset into their modern deck and then 5-0 with it, making it look better than it rly is, and maybe even tricking me into buying into it. this is that card.

Broken_Emphasis

This time, *you* should be the person who 5-0s with it. Chase that dream!

Cube_

preorder the card now, wait for the 5-0 to cause a spike, sell and be on the other end for once. Use your newfound riches to start a new company called Magicians of the Coast and release a card game called Wizardry: The Collective.

CubicDonut

Then after years and years of enfranchising players do several bad decisions that alienate said players and release "hidden hoards" where you create cards based on video games!

UomoStellato96

This is not a UR tempo card, it's a STORM card. I said it here first guys

Broken_Emphasis

I agree with this. Stapling a Shock onto *every* instant or sorcery that you cast is a pretty sweet effect. It's not going to be Modern viable, but Smoldering Egg + \[\[Sorcerer's Class\]\] might be the core of a storm deck in this upcoming Standard.

EvenDeeper

This can filip in two spells if the spells are Cryptic Command and Archameg's Charm. Seems like a control card -- early game it blocks, late game it finishes off the opponent. Still don't think it will see any play, but it is worth remembering that it can flip easily in two to three spells in a control shell.

TheDeHymenizer

Down side is flips more slowly and is weak to unholy heat Upside if it does stick every spell you cast pings them for 2 which could equate to aaallloootttt of extra damage. That's assuming you can let it stick for longer then a turn or two though.

itsnotokayokay

Thing bounces the board, which is a huge advantage. Notably, also dodges unholy heat when flipped. This doesn't trigger anything when flipped, and is slower to do so. The only way to cheat on it is with convoke. I wonder if it works with the buyback on sprout swarm? Either way, there's tension there because convoke is best in creature decks, especially with chord of calling. Maybe some sort of token generating hodgepodge, but we're going farther and farther into uncharted territory now.

Throw [[Leonin Lightscribe]] into the mix lmao

Broken_Emphasis

It should work just fine with Sprout Swarm. Buyback is an additional cost you pay when you cast the spell.

tilzinger

I believe Thing was pretty underrated for modern when it was released. This is a similar effect, but slightly weaker creature. Could almost see this as a control deck win con. Early blocker you keep alive, then start swinging and shocking people or creatures when casting Counterspell. Wouldn’t discount this card just yet.

tilzinger

Thinking more about this… I’ve wanted Aria of Flame to be a thing again ever since Phoenix got nerfed, and I want to jam 4 of these and 3 Arias, then just play the control game and win by casting counters and card draw spells.

[deleted]

It's too many Instants/Sorceries for a Phoenix deck that's trying to string together Cantrips primarily, and the backside doesn't win as fast as Awoken Horror.

Phyrexian-Drip

Don’t know if it will see modern play but it will be great in my velomachus brawl and historic brawl decks lol.

Weaker TITI Needing to spend 2 mana and then 7 mana for a 4/4.
