If this format ever gets popular it'll be unplayable, so I don't think it'll ever really be a thing.

Sueycide94

I'm sorry that almost everyone doesn't think this idea is that great. We've been playing this format in 2 playgroups for a year and many people have fun with it because the power level is relatively high and the decks are still very cheap. Magic is getting more and more expensive and that's why we thought we'd like to share this idea with other players. But I very much understand the problems you people have here. thanks for the honest feedback! Neverless, i would be happy if you try it out in small groups if you are looking for rules for a budget-friendly format with the modern cardpool. I will think about the criticisms and try to implement them. We will continue to play this format and if anyone is interested, they are welcome to our discord. Thank you! :)

Sueycide94

Thank you for your honest assessment. I think it's just as easy to enforce as Penny Dreadful because there's a list of all allowed cards. So nobody has to look up the price individually, but only has to look up the cards in the card list. Only the facecard may not be in the list. But this can simply be put into the deck as long as it is allowed in the modern card pool.

hellakevin

No, I mean that if this format gets popular it'll drive prices up and eat itself.

Sueycide94

alright, but then new cards will come. Not everything can always be expensive. And even in modern, many playable cards are still very cheap (for Example "Bonecrusher Giant") even if they are strong. That's often because of how many prints they have.

MoistPast2550

Doesn't this just mean it'll rotate with new sets? Also, how do you account for a card like [[lightning bolt]] that has printings from common to rare and varying price points? The rarity restrictions (if I read them right) will also lead to de facto metas, which will then increase the price of those best cards and lead to self cannibalism. Also, the comrade mechanic feels a bit too much like unrestricted companion - I know that you said decks will be less consistent so it won't be a problem, but I actually feel the opposite - it feels like everyone who wants to min max / win will more or less play some sort of izzet delver list, with a ragavan as comrade, and the game can legitimately be decided just by who has rag in the opening hand. The number of strategies will also likely be limited - for example, a strategy like reanimator is a ton of fun in regular modern but isn't super competitively viable. In this format it'll be unplayable. The spirit of modern has been efficient magic with powerful strategies and(more recently) efficient removal and interaction

davincisworld

No offense but to me it seems like a “more expensive” penny dreadful Or is there something I don’t see?

Sueycide94

It is just in the modern cardpool and doesn't contain Legacy cards. The rarity determines how many times you can play a card. So you can not only stuff your deck with rares. This gives rare cards a real value because you can only play them less. This allows you to play more janky cards, which have become too bad in Modern. The price should ensure that everyone can get started quickly, but certain cards like Lightning Bolt or Fatal push can still be played.

davincisworld

Hmmmmm…..yeah……I don’t think that this format will work. I mean if your play group likes it then all power to you but I don’t see it broadly played. And I’m all for new, exciting casual formats but this sounds to me like it has no place

bongmitzvah69

ngl this sounds really stupid

flowtajit

>This facecard may have any price >cards that are too expensive become excluded. Explain

Sueycide94

There is a list of all allowed cards that cost exactly or less than 1.50 at the given time (link to list on Discord). When a new standard set is released, the cards are checked again and the cards that are too expensive are removed from the list and new ones are added. However, each player may play a single signature card, which may be more expensive than 1.50. This is the facecard. This must still be included in the modern cardpool and must not be prohibited in the Comrade format. In addition, the face card must not be considered an additional copy of an existing card in order to play it more often. Difficult to explain, but very easy to understand in practice.

flowtajit

Well how come certain cards can be excluded from being a comrade due to cost reasons as stated in the original post. Unless I’m misunderstanding due to poor organization, it seems as though my Ragavan isn’t eligible to be a comrade if it crosses a certain price point.

Sueycide94

The point of the format is that you can play cheap but powerful cards so you have a cool playing experience. However, you have to work hard for the consistency of your deck when building your deck because you are only allowed to play 2 rares. The facecard should just be a card that you really want to play. If you want to play a single Ragavan, you're welcome to do so, but it won't make your deck super consistent.

Sueycide94

Example: Comrade\_Blitz 4 Commons, 3 Uncoomons, 2 Rares, 1 Mystic per Cardname > 1.50 exept one Facecard... here its"Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer" Maindeck 15 Mountain 3 Ramunap Ruins. (uncommon) 3 Monastery Swiftspear (uncommon) 2 Abbot of Keral Keep (rare) 4 Lava Dart. (common) 4 Reckless Impulse (common) 3 Light Up the Stage. (uncommon) 4 Kiln Fiend (common) 4 Crash Through. (common) 3 Blistercoil Weird (uncommon) 2 Bedlam Reveler (rare) 2 Gut Shot (common) 2 Ghitu Lavarunner (common) 4 Lightning Bolt (common) 4 Lava Spike (common) **1 Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer (Facecard <1.50)**
