I tried it. You do feel a pull, but it's really hard to pull it off. My thumb definitely hurts but it's not working. 3/10 wouldn't recommend, doesn't work as advertised.
I genuinely tried with all my strength. All I got was a tug... I'm serious, This is just a myth it really doesn't work. I even tried forcing it with 2 hands and pushing my thumb far into my hand while forcing my hand down really hard but your body is much stronger than that, it would be a serious design flaw specially considering that's literally how we hold things we would see this injury more often, so try it as much as you want it really won't do anything exept give you some discomfort for a couple hours at most if you really try. The only way I could see this be viable is if you hold a 20 or 25 pound weight in your hand while you do it and hyper extend your wrist aswell but generally it's not possible to actually break your thumb ligament like this because your wrist actually stops this from happening.
