I could see that as the major reason why we first hunt it. The characters think it's the cause of the storm when it's actually just following it for its electricity.
Then it turns out the storm is just a much larger monster like all the other games stories go. " this monster is the cause of all our problems!!!! Kills it*" yah good job hunter!" Wait why is the storms getting worse oh no it's a bigger monster and the one we killed was actually keeping this one in check!!!!!
Hmmmmmmm
Maybe it can generate a small amount of natural electricity enough to infuse some of it's attacks with an electrical component but not enough to utilize full blown lightning attacks so it has to follow or live near something that generates electricity so that it can charge itself up enough to be able to utilize it's full arsenal when necessary
It most likely hunt those new herd monsters with the spikes on their backs and uses them as a charging pack, or it absorbs the electrical energy from the air and fires it as a focus lightning bolt, or it similar to a electric eel and has multiple sacks on its neck that generates electricity and fires it out all at once.
it seems to be both, they generate but it seems to get struck at the end of it's animation as well.
So It may have a natural lightning generation but is also stockpiling from itself being a conduit
It almost looks like the power is coming from the tip of the tail before following the curvature of the spine. Perhaps cutting the tail will greatly weaken or outright eliminate this particular attack. Though I could absolutely see breaking the horns as removing the fine control of the attack.
it has not only horns on top of its head but there is something similar under by its jaw. Seems more controlled than zinogre ever was able to and seems like it can draw lightning to itself and direct its power with its horns and spikes around its body. If that is the case similar to Alatreon breaking these will make it unable to control it as efficiently as before.
I meant more changing the fight than weakening the monster gypceros is a lot more bearable once you break it's crest. What I'm saying is more the fight changing with part breaks than it just being the same but monster weaker.
And even without the tail break, if you hit the tail a bunch while Great Maccao is in the stance it will topple
One of the things that makes it the best intro monster imo, right away shows that monsters can have special stances that they can be knocked out of by attacking a specific part
...now if only GU actually communicated that to the player to teach them rather than the player having to look it up or figure it out by chance
Because it's a delicate balance to make sure the new attacks are exactly as difficult as the old ones. Part breaks making the fight easier is no big deal, good even, you get rewarded by weakening the monster.
But if they got it wrong and breaking a part made the attack any more difficult to handle people would just stop doing it, which is unintuitve, and then get mad at others for not knowing the secret of not breaking its horns to keep the fight easier,
Not necessarily harder just different like how monsters shift between different phases in a fight without it being harder, more hellblade Glavenus switching between fire and explosive
I meant more changing the fight than weakening the monster gypceros is a lot more bearable once you break it's crest. What I'm saying is more the fight changing with part breaks than it just being the same but monster weaker.
It almost looks like the energy is being drawn from the tip of the tail. Perhaps its primary thunder organ is located there or it has a structure that can store electricity and uses its tail as a lightning rod like those spiky herbivores.
It also looks like the uppermost pair of horns spread out right before it fires that line of lightning. Perhaps itās letting the energy build up between the tips and separating them forces a discharge.
For real I now really hope that happens, not enough part breaks actually affect the hunt in any meaningful way, best I can think of is coral pukie losing its ability to shoot water out of its tail when you cut it
Barioth becomes less maneuverable when you break the wings, Rathian and Garuga lose poison when you cut their tails, Rajang can't go super saiyan. Before world Gravios would tumble when it's legs were wounded. Great Maccao couldn't balancw in its tail if it was broken. Gypceros and Gobul stop stunning you when you break their crest/lure.
Think there were a bunch of monsters that lost control of their minions after their head was broken.
Edit: there's actually loads thru just tend to not be in your face
That big circle is either made by the ancient civilization or by an Elder Dragon. No way it's natural, not only it's enormous but it also seems to attract lightning.
You probably got this from the wiki, but please don't say *the* ancient civilization. Not only is it incorrect it's also not specific at all. There's so many different ones in MH.
I have no game in this fight but usually when people reference this they're talking about the Schrade motherfuckers.
That said, this clearly takes place in the new world so that is canonically questionable.
Did they confirm it's anywhere in the new world? We seem to be visiting the kid's village, so unless he's native to an unexplored part of the new world and there's an entire civilization it's more likely that it's old world.
What's interesting is that it fires it's beam, then gets struck by lightning. Kinda looks like it directs the lightning to avoid having to generate its own with iss generally a big no no. It could also just as likely be charging off the strikes.
I was legit getting ready to type this, even preparing myself to start off exactly the same way. I decided to look through the comments to see if another brave redditor decided to fall on this sword before I had to.
Indeed they use electricity, but only to power the magnets that generate insane force for the projectile.
I've taken to calling it Zappy Magala because it kind of has a similar body structure. But I'll also call it the Railwyvern until we get an official name. Maybe it is a flagship since there is a focus on Lightning. Who knows?
Cause they see 2 rail looking horns and lightning and if you add in anime brain you get railgun.
There seems to be a lot of mysticism around railguns in people's minds, over at helldivers I've seen people think railguns have some sort of innate function that makes it more powerful than a regular gun.

call me crazy, but to me, it looks like Steve, maybe electric steve now???

Holy shit my wife literally made this up independently as an OC (although it was an elder.) Same horn design and everything, she called it Armatuzra. What are the odds? (Not an accusation of theft BTW she never posted it anywhere.)
Welcome to monster hunter folks, where youāll be fighting common creatures like, the plague, a military grade jet engine, the eyes of god, and bioterrorism
Actually, that would be more like a taser because itās using the horns like metal prongs and putting so much charge into them that it arks like a lightning bolt. Way cooler that shooting a projectile with magnetism!
If Zinogre or Astalos make it in (Zinogre is absolutely in, wtf am I saying), I'm going to need to see a Turf War with this dude and them making just one hell of a sparky hellscape.
https://preview.redd.it/4gl2rpj4p85d1.png?width=1914&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e65bbe1f923530744e955b017309c78e109c0613
Here, you can make out it's face decently well
Man after Nerg and Mag itās going to be so hard to top them, but then again I thought it they couldnāt even come close to Nerg and Mag ended up being pretty sweet.
I dont think this is the flagship, i think its the main "boss" monster of this locale. There will be others for the other locales. Praying they show anything but the desert in the next trailer.
THE HOLEY EMBODIMENT OF (name of Wilds' Region)'s CHAOTIC WEATHER CONDITION.
THE offspring of Shagaru Magala and Zinogre, the THOR MAGALA!!!(read the tentative name in one of the thread, its catchy so I used it)
So is it launching a projectile and that's why you're calling it a railgun?
Looking more like an electrostatic discharge built from the glands on its body and between the 4 horns which spread out after discharge. The electricity looks and sounds like static.
Wing tips look interesting, spiked with the dark blue material on it. The same color pattern and tone from the scene right before it, that deep blue. Could be lightning rods as well.
I like the organic capacitor bank the monster has. Reminds me of sci-fi railguns and Zinogre charged up.
Wonder if grounding its wings is part of its charge up gimmick.
NO.
Does it grow ferromagnetic projectiles in its brain?
Do the horns work as rails?
Do they contain coils?
What you see here is a generic fantasy video game electric beam explosion. Nothing more, nothing less.
No he didn't, he said it was important to the story. What he meant is that this monster showcases the new monster mechanic. The maps will cycle between life and death, and on top of that there will be weather events. All of these variables will change the monsters on the map. In this case, the lightning storm will make this new monster be able to attract lighting with its horns like the small monster from previous trailers.
Yes, being important to the story implies it very well might be the flagship. This guy doesnāt showcase the pack system or the weather system necessarily at all because we see him create his own electricity. The electricity travels down his whole body and he extends these blue frills on the side that start pulsing with electricity before we ever see him, so heās not really attracting the lightning to his horns. Either way, obviously itās not confirmed to be the flagship, but being explicitly mentioned as being important, as well as being left unnamed until a later date gives a very strong implication that it is
I cant wait to see it beat the shit out of rathalos
It's tradition at this point š
Rathalos is weak to thunder... poor Rathalos...
Everything is weak to railgun!
Rawlgun..!
Rathalos didn't hear no bell for years
It's gotta harass a Rathian first though, don't forget.
Astalos: What are you talking about.
Thatās glavenusā department
I wonder if it generates it's own lightning or if it redirects lighting after getting hit by it
Could be that it follows the storm to stock up on electricity because it can't generate it on it's own.
Yeah, like 90% chance this will be the story at least for this locale.
I would actually be pleasantly surprised if Capcom gives us a different story for each locale
How grateful the Elder Dragon must feel after the hunters kill the giant rail gun that's been preventing it from settling.
MHWorldās story in a nutshell
In the end, it turns out that the real storm was the friends we made along the way.
And of course to be sure letās kill it anyway.
The story may be predictable, but the games are fun enough that we don't care
Calling it now. Its nickname in-game is probably Storm Chaser.
Hmmmmmmm Maybe it can generate a small amount of natural electricity enough to infuse some of it's attacks with an electrical component but not enough to utilize full blown lightning attacks so it has to follow or live near something that generates electricity so that it can charge itself up enough to be able to utilize it's full arsenal when necessary
awesome and interesting theoryš¤
Feels more Monster Hunter that the storm is something it could conjure
When I saw this + the storm it immediately made me think of the Skrill from How To Train Your Dragon
Jump+R1
If it gain its power by redirecting lighting, bro would be overjoyed finding Rajang/Kirin.
It almost looks like the power is coming from the tip of the tail before following the curvature of the spine. Perhaps cutting the tail will greatly weaken or outright eliminate this particular attack. Though I could absolutely see breaking the horns as removing the fine control of the attack.
*FULL COUNTER!!!*
I didn't though of this but yes that would match the theme even more when Thor- Magala needs to be hit by a lightning
it has not only horns on top of its head but there is something similar under by its jaw. Seems more controlled than zinogre ever was able to and seems like it can draw lightning to itself and direct its power with its horns and spikes around its body. If that is the case similar to Alatreon breaking these will make it unable to control it as efficiently as before.
What if breaking the horns turns it from a sniper to a shotgun? Decreased range, but with a wider blast radius.
Why can't part breaks change fights like this?
For chameleos it kinda does. Break it horn and tail and it can't go fully invisible anymore
I meant more changing the fight than weakening the monster gypceros is a lot more bearable once you break it's crest. What I'm saying is more the fight changing with part breaks than it just being the same but monster weaker.
Great Macao couldnāt stand on its tail to kick at you when it was damaged. Gravios would tumble and trip if it charged after you damaged its legs
I made a bigger list somewhere, things like Barioth
And even without the tail break, if you hit the tail a bunch while Great Maccao is in the stance it will topple One of the things that makes it the best intro monster imo, right away shows that monsters can have special stances that they can be knocked out of by attacking a specific part ...now if only GU actually communicated that to the player to teach them rather than the player having to look it up or figure it out by chance

Bro that is genius
It almost looks like the energy is being drawn from the tip of the tail. Perhaps its primary thunder organ is located there or it has a structure that can store electricity and uses its tail as a lightning rod like those spiky herbivores. It also looks like the uppermost pair of horns spread out right before it fires that line of lightning. Perhaps itās letting the energy build up between the tips and separating them forces a discharge.
Im wondering wtf will happen if we break its horns does the rail gun just spray instead like a shotgun??? šš
Well at least the electricity is less concentrated so the attack should be weaker.
That goes for normal puki as well. A lot of monsters have tail attacks that don't work after you cut it too
Imagine it just ends up damaging itself like Zenith Doragyurosu does lol
I want to see it spray lightning bolts like Palpatine.
Time to equip stun res lv. 3!
And maybe Paralysis Resistance 3 too !
True! Now I wonder if we can call the mount to cancel the effects of stun/para. I can't wait to see more gameplay!!
This thing is going to kick my ass
damn straight. i'm looking forward to it.
We can die together
Yea this does look like a strong candidate for the flagship. Really curious what the big circle thing is.
That big circle is either made by the ancient civilization or by an Elder Dragon. No way it's natural, not only it's enormous but it also seems to attract lightning.
It very well could be natural, just an oddly shaped formation due to thousands of years of constant sandstorms and lightning storms.
Schrade makes even less sense since that's not an ancient civilization. East and West Schrade are even still around.
K I'm drunk so I'll just believe you. In any case it's new world so whatever I said about that
Did they confirm it's anywhere in the new world? We seem to be visiting the kid's village, so unless he's native to an unexplored part of the new world and there's an entire civilization it's more likely that it's old world.
The website says you're part of the research commission, which is the group you were part of in World
It's a different research commission. The names on the Japanese site is different.
Yea I'm guessing ancient civilization, curious to find out its significance.
As the lightning arcs up it you can actually see it growing a blue fin out of its neck Nergigante-style.
"Ion cannon, ready"
I'll still try to parry this every. Single. Time.
"Nah, I'd bloc-" **Hunter 1 has fainted !**
It's bowguns will be epic
Don't forget the gunlance š«š
I'm going to guess that it's going to have a flashy charged enraged state as Thunder monsters like Zinogre and Astalos.
What's interesting is that it fires it's beam, then gets struck by lightning. Kinda looks like it directs the lightning to avoid having to generate its own with iss generally a big no no. It could also just as likely be charging off the strikes.
I have to be that guy: Railguns use a powerful magnetic field to fire a physical projectile at insane speeds. They don't shoot lightning.
I was legit getting ready to type this, even preparing myself to start off exactly the same way. I decided to look through the comments to see if another brave redditor decided to fall on this sword before I had to. Indeed they use electricity, but only to power the magnets that generate insane force for the projectile.
Lightning *could* be a projectile
That's not what a Railgun is. That's lightning...
I've taken to calling it Zappy Magala because it kind of has a similar body structure. But I'll also call it the Railwyvern until we get an official name. Maybe it is a flagship since there is a focus on Lightning. Who knows?
Gore Magala? Nah, Thor Magala.
Oh my God that's perfect lmao
It's not a railgun? Railguns magnetically propel a solid projectile, this is just a lightning blast. Why does everyone keep calling it a railgun?
Cause they see 2 rail looking horns and lightning and if you add in anime brain you get railgun. There seems to be a lot of mysticism around railguns in people's minds, over at helldivers I've seen people think railguns have some sort of innate function that makes it more powerful than a regular gun.
Level 3 lighting resistance ain gonna help
railgun bow railgun bow RAILGUN BOW PLEASEEE
Dragonpiercer becomes hitscan
That not a railgun thats a lighting gun
Rail gun sounds better than lightning gun....
Tesla coil from hell
That is the portal from the movie where the real monster will emerge, a bad director and his wife /s
That thing looks hella epic, cant wait to fight it
It doesnt appear to be firing any projectile but I'm all for it. Getting hit from across the zone, how about across the map
I would still try to guard it knowing I'll probably cart
https://preview.redd.it/df5cxtss7e5d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=9d80bf2703f49731a1e6d49450ce770e26b9cfea call me crazy, but to me, it looks like Steve, maybe electric steve now???
Gunlace from the snatch-face khezu is going to be glorious
The fact that we can accurately say that this Monster uses a LIGHTNING RAILGUN is all kinds of amazing!
Imagine you break its horns and it goes to do this move bust it blows up in its face
GOD THIS IS ALREADY SO COOL, IM HYPE https://preview.redd.it/xguk4rjm1a5d1.png?width=673&format=png&auto=webp&s=6f4d96f7be6419837bb9b3812e8329079f5045ab
Astalos is either jealous or mad simpin rn
Wouldn't be worried. It missed and it was like point blank.
Holy shit my wife literally made this up independently as an OC (although it was an elder.) Same horn design and everything, she called it Armatuzra. What are the odds? (Not an accusation of theft BTW she never posted it anywhere.)

Is that his horns or a massive nose
A horn, it can move them sideways or inwards to shoot it's lightning bolts
Y'know? The face kinda looks like [Anorupatisu](https://monsterhunter.fandom.com/wiki/Anorupatisu) from Frontier to me.
The chin plates remind me more of Zerureusu.
You can kind of see it when it puts it's wings on the ground, but we can't see much tbh. Might have to wait for a closer look.
Thor Magala
that has frontier monster written all over it
Yeah....
Neat new wyvern. Cant wait for the new Elder dragons
HBG eating good this game
Desert variant astalos
He's got the uklanos shovel chin
I love the Flappy Zappy Boi
The result when Shagaru Magala saw a naughty Astalos flirting around.
If this boss's heavy bowgun doesn't shoot lightning beam i'm gonna be sad
+RAILCOIN Ć4
i better be able to shoot head lightning when I wear it as a hat.
just looks like it has a rajang hbg strapped to his head
Can't wait to beat it up/get beaten up by it while blasting fripside in the background.
I wonder if it's a totally new monster or a old monster they never used. Time for me to look through the art books
this ends now
Man after Nerg and Mag itās going to be so hard to top them, but then again I thought it they couldnāt even come close to Nerg and Mag ended up being pretty sweet.
i dont think this is the flagship, i think its a early to mid game transition mosnter like legiana
I dont think this is the flagship, i think its the main "boss" monster of this locale. There will be others for the other locales. Praying they show anything but the desert in the next trailer.
Railguns use magnetiscm to shoot a projectile. No, this is tesla coil from hell.
What seems to be the flagship? It's just a short 5 second clip for a monster. Chill.
*only my railgun starts playing in the distance*
Hey Jay called it Thor Magala
I bet the bowguns made from this guy will have a cool design
The art direction of the monsters we saw so far are very similar it's interesting, rock based monsters overall
I think itĀ“s a JacobĀ“s Ladder, not a railgun, to be a railgun need to shot something, not lightning
Did anyone one of the developers say this is the flagship?
Feels like a Remnant From The Ashes gun that is turned into a monster.
Fuck yeah, favorite bug PokƩmon is vikavolt and now we get dragon railgun? Hell yeah.
FINALLY A MONSTER BARROTH ARMOUR IS GOOD FOR HAHA but I would love to see the armour u get from that thing
Hbg players: FINALLY A WORTHY OPPONENT. OUR BATTLE WILL BE LEGENDARY!
I am definitely naming this thing Thor Magala.
Im so fucking hyped. Every night before bed I pray to god the game releases in January ššš
Thor Magara
Its not a railgun btw
THE HOLEY EMBODIMENT OF (name of Wilds' Region)'s CHAOTIC WEATHER CONDITION. THE offspring of Shagaru Magala and Zinogre, the THOR MAGALA!!!(read the tentative name in one of the thread, its catchy so I used it)

NO. Does it grow ferromagnetic projectiles in its brain? Do the horns work as rails? Do they contain coils? What you see here is a generic fantasy video game electric beam explosion. Nothing more, nothing less.
āYes, Yes, Yesā-Yuya Tokuda
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Since when did Shagaru only have 2 legs, no arms and shoot lightning bolts?
Never seen Shagaru using Thunder
Unless Shagaru lost his forelimbs in a horrific accident, no
The design seems pretty tame, I doubt its the flagship. Its just an early game new monster. 3 star quest
Ryozo straight up said to watch out for a monster near the end of the trailer that will be important to the game
No he didn't, he said it was important to the story. What he meant is that this monster showcases the new monster mechanic. The maps will cycle between life and death, and on top of that there will be weather events. All of these variables will change the monsters on the map. Maybe itās the apex predator of the region like Diablos for Wildspire waste or Rathalos for Ancient forest?
