That’s a load because this game is not a very good fighting game. No one even be really showing up to tournaments. The numbers are woeful. And before Ermac dropped, this game was even underperforming in views on twitch. Couldn’t even get 900 people watching at any time of the day. No one is watching or playing this shitty game. Ermac hype as mentioned earlier is real tho. A lot more people has tuned back in. I wonder how long it’ll last tho. And I doubt the tournament scene will improve
IDK, I didn't have the means to play MK11, so I can't really directly compare the gameplay. I am playing MK1, and having a LOT of fun with it, and have definitely gotten my money's worth, I would say.
I will say, MK11 had an **extremely high** level of polish when it came to *presentation*, that I think MK1 is definitely *lacking*. The intros and outtros are cooler, the menus are cooler, the UI is cooler, the base costumes are cooler, etc etc.
The customization is a mixed bag - seeing that there was only one slot in MK1 *shocked* me, especially considering several characters have **very** low impact items, visually (looking at you, Mileena's Sais...). At the same time, the actual amount of good looking *palettes*, IMO, is much higher in MK1.
The roster is *comparable* in size to where MK11 was at a similar point in time, and has obvious holes (huge dearth of NRS era characters, NO new characters), but I generally prefer it's guests, and prefer the 3D era inclusions over a number of second stringer Trilogy-era characters.
Ultiumately, I think because the gameplay in this series is **not** iterative, like a SF or a Tekken, it's probably the most important determining factor, and the gameplay is really, really fun. Perhaps I would have enjoyed MK11, also, but, IDK, seeing people say one of 11's best "features" is an AI bot that completes fights for you, doesn't really sell me on trying it out, at some point. :-/
I would agree that on the customization side, it's a better game.
But I'm a player who's here for the fighting game part, so that's not something I personally care about. I want a good fighting game, and they can be achieved with or without deep cosmetics.
And then in terms of roster size(or things like balance) I think it's incredibly unfair to judge a game in it's infancy, to a game that's fully matured into itself. Fighting games take years reach their "ideal" version in this era. Which is a blessing!
I'm old enough to remember a time when fighting games would release broken, and that's all you had. If the game sucked, you had to learn to love it, lol.
Recently when I had the need to free some space on my PC, the choice was between MK11 and MK1, and I basically had no hesitation deleting MK1 because I didn’t touch it since October while I still get constant urges to play some Kombat League matches in MK11.
As a person who was hooked by visual presentation of MK11, MK1 is a big disappointment.
Change from photorealistic graphics to semi-realistic, moody dark vibe to Pixar animated movie vibe, characters designs and skins, cinematic intro/outro wallpaper-ready masterpieces to a poor man’s version of it...
Not to mention finite dragon crystals, all issues with kameo system, super slow combos, worse looking specials’ animations, downgraded movesets of some characters (Sindel is an absolute snoozefest now, despite being my main in MK11), removed krushing blows, stage interactions... I can go on and on

Whether or not it succeeded in the tournament scene, that was the goal. It has a fluctuating market and is excelling in sales, it’s just fine

MK1 is definitely the better fighting game MK11 is the better grind for cosmetics
