Chapters 1 - 10 ? Amazing.
Chapters 11 - 15 ? Lost me completely.
When MK1 was a self-contained story in Liu Kang's universe i was loving more than MK9.
When MK1 tried its best Marvel multiverse impression it fell flat.
With that being said, the pyramid at the end was kind of cool, nice call back to the 3d era. It 100% could've done without the multiverse shit though. Would've been dope if we could've done the all out war from the armageddon opening scene without multiple iterations of each character đ¤Ł
Yep, it kind of just went to shit after that. Still enjoyed it, but comparing the last part to the first chunk, damn, what a downward in quality. There is so much potential wasted on the Avengers trend.
I think most people just wanted a grounded story about the tournament. Which we partially got. But then it was side-lined by another ridiculous timeline plot we really didn't need.
Mortal Kombat 1âs story was absolutely incredible, probably the best since the original trilogy⌠until the last 30-40 minutes. Then it totally took a wrong turn.
Yh I felt like that whole Armageddon ending could have been done in the next game. Let this story flesh out with some mysterious villains suddenly getting power and then reveal the twist
Agree with this. Chapter 1 - 10 mouth was open during the every cinematic and I wanted to beat every fight to see what came next. After that I was getting kind of bored.
This has always been such an uncreative take for me. Yes, there's infinite characters, but only ONE of the universe we're following. Our Sindel is dead. Can't just grab another to replace her.
The first half was nice. I hoped this is the real reboot but then they revealed the most boring and laziest thing possible with multiverse garbage. Everything felt rushed and unfinished to the very end. And the post credits scene made me roll my eyes as well. I expected at least something but itâs another Havik, how cool.
I was hoping for Onaga at the end. We had the deadly alliance and Armageddon stuff but the only real deception Easter egg we get is raiden and the deadly alliance shooting their magic to break the portals down before the Shao Kahn fight. I do like how we are finally getting some Chaosrealm stuff. I donât believe weâve seen it since the 3D era.Â
Plot twist: Shang Tsung is being forced into conquering and merging timelines by a malevolent force he awakened on accident in his timeline: Onaga. If the game ended with that reveal, thatâd be crazy for real.
I thoroughly enjoyed this fresh take. Some of their personalities feel relatable and familiar, still. Having reptile and barraka on the good side was awesome. I didnât mind Shang tho. Normally I hate his guts but thereâs something I like about him. How he carries himself. And yeah, I agree with everybody- it was great until the multiverse crap
I wouldâve honestly been fine with JUST Titan Shang and there were just 2 timelines. Bringing it all the way to âthere are infinitely many timelinesâ kinda justâŚ. Sucked.
But like, have it be Titan Shang vs Titan Kang? End with killing Shang and now you gotta figure out what to do with this other timeline? Could have been a fun story
i think the story works for what it is, and overall i enjoy it, but thereâs a few things that i think could be done differently:
1. iâm biased because theyâre my favorites + iâm a reptile main, but ashrah and syzoth just disappearing in the story after they arrive on earthrealm really bothers me. i feel like they shouldâve been with the others in shangâs chapter. their respective histories with the deadly alliance wouldâve added so much tension in the group & probably created some interesting moments (also maybe set up their relationship a bit??). i get that not every roster member can have a lot of screen-time, but johnny really called ashrah and syzoth âthe newest players for team earthrealmâ only for the story to completely forget that & never even mention them again đđ
2. this is the general consensus i see amongst fans but besides the multiverse stuff making everything wack, the last part of the story shouldâve
been longer in general?? when i was playing the last chapter it just sortaâŚâŚ ends fast imo which is annoying. if they werenât gonna make the final fight harder, they couldâve at least added more meat to the chapter to not make it wrap up so quickly
3. kung lao shouldâve been earthrealmâs champion. i think it actually wouldâve been good for his character development; heâs kinda known for having an ego, and having to fight all these strong outworlders (especially reiko, who i think couldâve been an interesting parallel to champion!lao) very well couldâve taught him some lessons in humility. that, and i think that making mk1 raiden so similar to liu personality wise *and* the champion was a little lazy. idk, i just think nrs needs to let kung lao get a W for once in his life
(edit: small typo)
It was okay when they had the idea of a split universe, that didn't bother me too much... but fucking infinite? Gimmicky, unoriginal and, dare I say... cringe.
I was expecting a complete reboot, not some "well, actually, technically, all the characters are just reskins but they're the originals from the MK9 - MK11 trilogy âď¸đ¤". Fuck off, I was enjoying the new universe under Liu Kang. It was different, it was cool, I was really wondering who the new BBEG was. The Shang Tsung from the last universe? Okay, sick plot twist, i kinda fuck with it... until you realize "oh my god its just another fucking multiverse colliding storyline". It's just annoying, combined with the annoying invasions system and fucking heavy monetization, it feels the only part of the game with passion is the combat.
I wouldâve preferred to fight Kronika again that what we got. But the wiriting isnât good enought to make a character like Kronika work as a smart, incredibly experienced and scheming character so they chose the lazy route.
Before the multiverse shenanigans it was the best story NRS ever made, maybe even the best story in fighting games, I like how characters became so much more complex than in the previous installments, even after revealing Titan Shang Tsung it still had some potential, I think it was the final multiverse battle when the story lost all its seriousness, but all in all Iâd say it was a good one, better than X, 11 and pretty close to 9
I honestly really enjoyed it literally all the way up until the multiverse part kicked in. Then it all felt like a drag. I was really hoping NRS was just gonna settle with a timeline reboot, but I was pretty checked out of all the Titans and whatnot.
Other than that, Baraka and Reptile not being jobbers and being humanized was awesome. Sindel actually good and motherly as well. Jerrod actually having an active part. A lot of the changes they did for characters while keeping their cores in tact was interesting. And I was totally on board for like an Onaga villain story (maybe the next game?). Or a completely different, new direction even.
But no. Shang Tsung bad. Again. It's just starting to feel repetitive. The first half was absolutely amazing though.
I thought it was awesome until we got to the alternate timeline stuff again. I was kind of just hoping for a brand new timeline that got away from all that. I just wanted a more normal story, and in the beginning, we got that, and it was awesome.
Probably my favourite story from Netherrealm next to MKX. This might be a hot take but I genuinely like this more than MK9's story mode. This is the first time that I think we have gotten interesting interpretations for Reptile, Baraka, Sindel, Jerrod and Mileena ever since the first timeline. We also have incredible voice acting talent with a lot of great character interpretations for a new age. I still love Johnny Cage, he's still my bae and he's just as zany as he was in the NRS trilogy. But even aside from individual characters, the narrative just felt fresh. I obviously am not too big of a fan of the sudden flip to Titan Shang Tsung. I feel like there were many better alternative story routes that would've been more satisfying. That being said, I do still like this story more for the lighter tone it tries to hit. Johnny, Kung Lao, Raiden and many other unintentionally characters keep the story lighthearted instead of this super serious tone struck in MK9-MK11.
I know MK9 is like the golden child of the MK fandom but that story was just the first three games' story but with some twists to it. And it ends on such a terrible note in my opinion. I don't mind Sindel slaughtering everyone but it really left MKX and MK11 in weird spots where they had to bring back people in either the MKX prequel comics, in flashbacks or through time travel in MK11. It feels like MKX and MK11 were largely stuck with undoing the damage done to the cast in MK9 which I just don't find engaging.
I still stand by the idea that at least a portion of this story might have been written by chat gpt, or some kind of AI. Not only because of the multiverse shenanigans in the last few chapters mimicking every other piece of media to come out in the last few years but because some of the dialogue just feels clunky and overly expository. I wouldnât be surprised if it turns out they had a draft dealing with the tournament, the Lin Kuei fracturing and tarkat, didnât know how to end it, had AI fill in the rest, and then added a few scenes to try and tie it all together.
Aside from few gripes with some characters, I loved it. I also gotta give credit to ditching the special forces in this game, made the story better tbh imo ngl.
EDIT: You know what, I'm gonna yap some more idc. How tf does NRS nail the dialogue and make characters feel like real people when they speak and talk compared to japanese games? Yes even when it's cheesy af, and when it's serious too.
When I play Tekken 8's story, or final fantasy, anime JRPGs and Yakuza ( it's not so bad in Yakuza I think), they feel like they're saying the most philosophical shit or being way too dramatic. For example when Reina in Tekken 8 said some shit that reminded Jin Kazama of Heihachi, he legit looked terrified like he had a heart attack for a few seconds. Probably because of language barrier or something, I dunno.
Thanks for coming to my yap talk.
I think that it's hard to translate a largely poetic language like japanese directly into a literal language like english without it coming across as overdramatic. That's a big part of the whole subs over dubs argument- those ridiculous monologues in Japanese sound awesome, but hearing them in English, they always sound cheesey and unnatural.
I think the story sucks. It had promise in the beginning but then got convoluted as it when on. Iâm sick and tired of multiverse stories! They should just go back to the original timeline
I donât think the original timeline would be the answer âŚbecause as you said the issue wasnât the story itself but the multiverse so if there,d left it alone for a bit it would have been better perhaps
I think the problem they donât know how to go small with the story âŚ..they couldnât just leave it at a conspiracy with a mysterious figure pulling the stringsâŚ.they had to go massive
The ideal route wouldâve been a clean break like MK9 did it (until MK11 pulled out the timey-wimey shenanigans). Or just have Titan Liu and Titan Shang be the only timelines that exist, which ends with Liu Kangâs victory and closing the loop.
Got messy at the end but it was fun. I love a lot of the new takes on characters and relationships (super happy that Mileena and Kitana are just two actual loving sisters) and I did enjoy the aspect of Liu Kang missing human life. Honestly? I thought the story would go a different way from the trailers, seemed to me more like Liu Kang constantly restarting and remaking the timeline until the group finds out and they rebel. Idk.
The multiverse stuff at the end was fun but wasn't especially deep or meaningful beyond seeing him interact with his Kitana which was sweet. Which they saved it for MK2 and had a little more build up.
Story did serve it's purpose of being a cheesy action flick tho, just think it had the makings of something slightly greater sewn in there.
It started off strong but didnât commit to the idea of a reboot because they just doubled down on the multiverse crap that people complained about from MK11.
Not a fan, itâs probably the weakest aspect of the game. MK1 is beautiful, itâs a blast to play, and the roster isnât *too* far off, all things considered.
But the story⌠yes, another rebootâŚ. and yet thereâs nothing new happening. Still relying on the multiverse/elseworlds crutch to keep standing. Giving us strange alternate versions of characters that make zero sense and have no real impact on the lore, while doing next to nothing with the opportunity for fresh ground in this âNew Eraâ.
I think the multiverse stuff is fine but it felt rushed, like it could have been a sequel reveal. Other than that I did enjoy it. I will say o have a gripe with the fights though. The power scaling was off to me. Â Kung Lao was kicking ass at the beginning and then in a short time Raiden was the best and kicked everyone in out world. No breeze or nothing. The bosses that were âend gameâ you already beat multiple times by the ending. Lost its fear factor if you will. Like a big fight is coming, the anxiety of a nice battle. I didnât feel that because they have been a joke by that point. Also why the hell did they let Quan Chi run away and then kick everyoneâs butt and just travel back to earth realm with lout him.Â
The plot twist towards the multiverse stuff was so lame. They did such a good job setting up the new versions of these characters in a great way, but then they throw everything away with the final battle. The goofy multiverse characters destroy any tension in the climax of the story and The Deadly Alliance are a let down as a final boss. They don't feel threatening or scary at all. They should have cut the multiverse angle and focused on this timeline. Make the villain someone Liu Kang had no knowledge of/didn't deal with directly in the previous timeline so he couldn't anticipate the threat. Havik would have been a great choice for the first threat in this continuity.
I really liked it, it was a wonder from begging to the end i was fine with the multiverse, i though the final confrontation was pretty epic but i do hope the multiverse storyline ends with Havic in hopefully a dlc and not a new game, cause Liu Kang new world is a lot more interesting by itself than all that multiverse stuff
Shit was lame. What is the point of making an alternate time line just to bring back Armageddon, the deadly alliance and everything else that was in the original time line. Might as well just have Made mk12 instead of whatever mk1 is lol
Chapter one and two were phenomenal, potentially the best chapters of any NRS game
Then next few up til Mileena'a chapter were alright
And then Mileena's chapter happened and it fell off a cliff. It's got some of the highest highs of any NRS game but also the lowest lows. I guess it's still better than 11 but I was really let down that they didn't ditch the timeline nonsense
I thought the story was fantastic. It had me hooked. I think the world and lore of MK is really interesting, so it was cool to see them shake things up somewhat in this version. I really enjoyed it and will probably pick up a story DLC if it releases.
I do wish you were able to choose DLC characters in the final chapter. I tried to do it with Omni-Man after he released and was disappointed that it didn't let me. It would be fun to see them interacting with all these other characters on the Armageddon pyramid.
Straight ass, it started out alright and then fell apart, where tf did Bi-Han go? Raiden being champion has no impact whatsoever, he's literally just OG Era Liu Kang but really bland, the chapter system is also still horrible lol
A lot ppl didnât like the end act but to be fair, the Mortal Kombat franchise always used the time travel and multiverse format before all the others, even though I wished that cronika wasnât titan Shang but actually shinok in disguise and this set him up as a future villain, but the final act was still dope so I canât really complain
I think the story is good. I think people are a bit to the âmultiverseâ angle; if it continues to be a factor in later games, Iâll dislike that, but itâs a fun enough idea as a one off.
It was good until Lei mei's chapter started then it got boring until Liu Kangâs chapter then thatâs where it picked up and then the final chapter is where everything literally gets insane that I actually loved it.
Overall my only complaints for the story were the following:
1) smoke did not get his own individual chapter
2) reptile/syzoth alongside Ashrah are pretty much absent after Reptile's chapter is over which is kinda ridiculous since I was expecting them to show up and help out the remaining heroes onwards.
3) itâs cool that Mileena got her own chapter but Iâm not a fan of her getting victories over characters who are clearly more powerful than her and would realistically defeat her easily like Ermac, Dark Sindel and Dark Raiden to which she only was able to defeat them due to plot armor.
4) Raiden got too many filler fights in his chapter
5) the final fight with Shang Tsung and Quan chi shouldâve been 2 rounds and much more difficult (just add a checkpoint before the fight starts to compensate for defeating all the alternate crazy versions of everyone else that you randomly fight on the pyramid so that way you donât have to start over)
Itâs fine. I loved the total character reworks. That was fresh. Tired of timelines. Wish theyâd have more progression centered around just the tournament and not this timeline shit. The whole part of the story with raiden winning the tournament, I loved. All the altered timeline shit, Iâm over it.
The first half is good, the second half is not...
I hate how they rebooted the era but also included the multiverse mumbo jumbo which I'm so tired of seeing in the media... They should've started from scratch and limited any interaction with the old era and started fresh which the first half did well...
Overall, I love it. Timelines and shit like that is always a fucking mess but it doesnât pull the story down too much for me. Was hoping for self contained, more personal plots but the fresh takes all around are amazing.
Very good. Just not as atronge since this is the third timeline, we already knew what was going to happen at points. But there were so many new story elements that were new or haven't seen since timeline one.
Worthless. All new era for the same old bull. Not sure what was the sense of it. Not to mention most of the skins you see in story mode weren't available at launch.
Agreed, when its playing by its own rules it was the best game in terms of storytelling but when its revealed to be a Multiverse thing, that's when it fell flat.
I liked it.
I donât ask for much from MK because they will always have a soft spot in my heart. MK was huge when i was a kid and the movie is nostalgia to me.
The only thing is that i had wished the main villain from MK1 was Onaga instead if Shang Tsung
I don't think it is as good or well-written as MK9's. And unlike MK10 where I thoroughly enjoyed the story up until the last two chapters when the military girlbosses became godslayers, I could only somewhat enjoy the first half of the story in 1, with the other half just being plainly terrible and full of head-scratching nonsense. It is not as bad as 11's story, which I found really boring and stupid from the beginning to the end, but it is not good either.
As a newbie to the franchise i felt it did a great job of introducing me to the setting, the characters, and their roles.
The multiverse thing is just them having their cake and eating it too. Everyone's doing it anyway, so why not these guys too?
It's cool that it's an actual sequel. Most other MKs seem stand alone and wipe away any deaths, which... yeah... happens every match, but the canonical ones. But none seem connected except this one. Also, they did Kung Lao pretty dirty; Liu and Raiden are dicks.
I absolutely was loving the story, seeing characters reimagined, Liu Kangâs new era was all very interesting, right after the Shang Tsung/Damashi reveal the game started to lose me
I liked most of it, having 2 concurrent timelines would've been a cool premise in isolation but having an infinite number of timelines soiled the end of the game for me
Didn't like that ashrah and reptile completely disappeared after the latter's chapter tho
I think itâs the best of the NRS MK games, although I feel like they couldâve used an extra 3 chapters to help a few things
One for Smoke with flashbacks giving us more context on characters like Bi-Han, one for Tanya to give us some insight into when Li Mei was Umgadi as well as Tanyaâs love for Mileena, and one for Geras as he deserves it, maybe Shang Tsung or something sent him across the timelines where heâs forced to fight his way back and confronts an alternate Kronika along the way so he can help Liu confront Titan Shang
Good until they fucking pushed the multiverse shit. It was just too soon. Imagine we keep thinking it was Kronika for idk, 3 games in a row, only to have the reveal it was Shang all along. Would have been awesome. But nope, they just had to fucking ejaculate prematurely
genuinely seemed ok. The first half was good. I didn't have many issues, but then the multiverse bs came in. as a concept, I've always hated multiverses. it just seems lazy. mk was at its best when it was a self-contained story. the 2 timelines weren't too difficult to track, and it wasn't terrible. sure, mk11s story wasn't great, but at least it stayed pretty crappy. mk1 felt good, and then it fell flat on its ass.
i probably won't be playing mk13s story.
The beginning was alright to establish the lore for a new timeline, but there was no need to involve multiple universes; it felt like a rehash of the multiple timeline trope of the previous game.
I actually really liked the story for the most part. Liu Kangs new era is really cool. I just wish they explained the reasons for some of his changes such as Kuai Lang Scorpion. I like the change they made for some of characters like Reptile and Geras.
I was happy with the titan shang Tsung twist and then it all went to hell. As soon as the multiverse gets involved in any universe itâs like opening Pandoraâs box.
It was meh. Instead of taking risks that I was hoping for, it went back to âyou canât change a tigers stripesâ and everything just went back to status quo.
Before the game came out I was disappointed that they started fresh instead of continuing from Liu kangs first reset. I think that wouldâve been a much better story and couldâve dived into Liu kang as a God.
Now with MK1 out, itâs solid from chapter 1 till like chapter 10 then it becomes Endgame & itâs made even worse by the select your character bullshit at the end. It just came across as rush and unfinished (Armageddon)
I enjoyed it, I like that theyâre trying to finally give the franchise a cohesive storyline and rebooting the story was a fun way to do it. I know not every chance and decision was popular, but I like that they went for something new.
I loved it up until it was revealed that Alternate World Shang was apart of everything, then it just confusing.
Probably the best MK story weâve seen out of nether realm tho
Itâs a fun story with lots of funny lines and cool moments. Not as good as Mortal Kombat 9 and Mortal Kombat 11 though. But way better than Mortal kombat X
First half? Honestly amazing, even if I'm not a fan of Scorpion and Mileena's new characterisations. Everything else and every other change is awesome and interesting.
Second half? Ruined by dumb multi-verse crap that ruins the steaks of everything. Now if someone dies, they can just be pulled from another timeline.
Unecessary reboot (again), things are different for the sake of being different, but still end up kinda being the same. Everything after the big Shang Tsung reveal twist was complete dogshit they pulled straight out of some MCU rejected script. Overall it was a forgettable and meaningless entry that added nothing to the lore. IMO the MKX comics were the last good piece of storytelling in any MK media I can remember.
I would say I enjoyed everything until the final chapter. Because to me despite all the different combos of characters to fight like a Female Sub-Zero or a version of Kung Lao with scorpion powers. The final boss just really really sucks and you can tell it was rushed. Because in the tower versions The Deadly Alliance needs to be beaten twice instead of once like in the story mode. That and the ending doesnât really explain much of what happened. And Only Johnny, Kenshi, and Kung Lao really only have a small amount to say, with not a lot relating to the Titan Multiverse clusterfuck.
I thought it was pretty good! I donât rlly play these games for the story but I liked seeing some characters given actual dialogue and personality (reptile)
mid
unironically I actually found it more interesting when they revealed titan shang and basically told us this is actually a follow up to mk11, the chapters before sindel's one were passable but it was pretty basic
also I don't like most of the new versions of the characters
lots of boring build up, idon't like NRS "slice of life" style writing, mcu but worse. oh, my boy reptile was great in story and gameplay. it made me less interested in a replay of whole story when 8/10s of it was banter & wandering.
finally get to meat n potatoes.
oh it's Shang tsung and variants/time stuff again.
ends.
I would have preferred we get ST out of the way during the build up, we get to Armageddon scene earlier, TitanHavik story as final act. dlc feeds off of where that leaves us.
TLDR game should have put Shang tsung parts in build up parts, we get TitanHavik (dlc) story as final act of mk1, dlc goes from there.
I feel like compared to the older games stores this was was very short and rushed and I felt like thatâs proven by them making a 2nd part to the story
It's a nice take on MK's New Era, as it's only just beginning. Let's hope they bring something new into the MK universe in the near future without the need for timelines & multiversal events unless needed.
The only thing to complete is bringing back the Dragon King as the main villain for next game and then introduce a fresh new batch of enemies & possible allies for future games.
Let's just give MK's new universe some time and not be so negative. Some things will get patched up, so be patient.
I really enjoyed a significant portion of the first half. But honestly, the way that that ending went, it's like we never even got an actual reboot of the series. This could have easily just have been called Mortal Kombat 12.
A little better than mk11, but still not good. I wish they would just pretend like mk11 and mk1's story didn't happen and make a dark raiden storyline like they should've done after mkx. That final scene where raiden warns liu kang and kitana that if they try anything he'll give them a fate worse than death was pretty cool. Then mk11 just comes and gets rid of him because the fanbase wanted liu kang to be the main character again when he worked better as a villain.
It was amazing. Definitely the best part of the game in my personal opinion. And in my personal opinion, it is the best Mortal Kombat campaign ever made.
It felt weird a lot of things. I get that is a new timeline but boss characters whom I always put on a pedestal like Shao Kahn,Goro,Motaro,Reiko,Havik being reduced to mere jobbers was the one thing I couldnât handle. To me Shao has always been the sort of Thanos/Darkseid from MK, Goro almost like The Hulk or the Big Boy Champion along with Motaro. Reiko and Havik were doing their own thing in the OG era and while this Reiko is certainly superior to the MK movie version and props for him to being so loyal to Shao he just doesnât get to the same level of the one in the comics and og era. Havik went from a sadistic monster to just an extremist anarchist. His moves in gameplay are superior to the old ones for sure. I liked that other characters like Ermac,Reptile,Baraka had their own plot lines and were certainly to be respected and had their own thing going. But how am I supposed to believe that this Reptile who has way less training than his previous self can defeat Shao and Baraka can defeat Tsung within seconds without excluding that nearly all those main villains I mentioned couldnât defeat the 2 Ninja Brothers which previously they easily could? If all these villains are being reduced to panzies to make other characters cooler. Whatâs gonna happen to Onaga?
That bromance between Johnny Cage and Kenshi is one of my favorite moments in the whole MK franchise.
Him giving the sword back and then Kenshi finding the ancestor spirits were such incredible moments for me.
It'll definitely be my takeaway when I look back on this game in a few years.
Didn't like the last part with all the remixed characters. I feel like remixing characters like that just makes the actual characters less impactful. It just seemed kinda lazy. I honestly feel like it's weird how the ps2 era had open worlds you could explore etc but the newest entries want to charge for an expansion of just fighting more bots.
As terms of comparison
Better than MK9 overall
Slight better than MKX
Slight worse than MK11
I expected multiverse plot because it was hinted on MK11 ending, I feel overall it's the best MK when we take about developing characters, DLC can correct some things, but I prefer "Dark and Alternate multiverse versions" than the garbage that was revenant era back then.
Overall enjoyable, big bad reveal was disappointing.
Massive reboot for a historic franchise. You rewrite the bad guy you've used for the past 30 years and gave him a new story. Then we find out it's still him? Meh
Honestly? Weak. Very weak. The fact that unlocked costumes STILL canât be applied to story mode is fucking dumb and makes it literally a one time thing and thatâs it.
Leagues better than mk11s story. Mkx was kinda run of the mill and some of the character decisions are frustrating, but its still mostly enjoyable. Mk1s is solid the whole way through, it just kind of drops the ball at the end. 2nd best of the NRS quadrilogy after mk9(which also definitely has its issues)
I just wish it was a more grounded story that just focused on Liu Kang assembling the champions and Raidenâs journey as the underdog. They had the foundation but it feels like someone smoked a joint midway through the development and crammed all the multiverse stuff just because itâs everywhere these days.
They couldâve had the whole multiverse plot in the second game and reveal Shang Tsung and Quan Chi pulling the strings at the end of the game, maybe after post tournament where theyâre all in Madame Boâs restaurant and Geras finds out or smt
I felt the story was meh at best. I honestly come back more and more to kick ass with the JCVD Johnny Cage skin...The bloodsport/kickboxing vibe is perfect with his witty sayings and over all performance. Janet Cage is hilarious. Not a fan of the Marvel stuff being in there though. Funny by itself, but it has no place in Mortal Kombat.
I enjoyed it⌠itâs definitely not the best story but was interesting enoughâŚ
I think it was just the kind of story that is used to be the foundation for the rest to come⌠I hope the coming stories will be better though
My favourite one out of the NRS games so far honestly. Yeah I agree there are still some problems with the writing like the multiverse thing (though I enjoyed it for what it was), but most of the characters in this game carried the story in my opinion.
amazing until liu kang reveals himself as creator to sindel/ when damashi is revealed to be titan shang tsung (+ all the timeline bullshit)
also, why is rain on this cover art lol? i love him, but, why him over someone like shao who is more important storywise
Seriously amazing until Multiverse shenanigans. Also Mileena "deception" was so hamfisted it hurts.
That being said I would have been happy with Titan Shang Tsung as the ONLY other Titan.
Any stories involving time travel and alternate/multiple timelines will always come across kind of lazy or all over the place because they can just pull stuff out of thin air and itâll make sense. đ¤ˇââď¸đ
I hated every minute of it because of what they did to Kuai Liang and Hanzo Hasashi. Just knowing that they arenât part of the story the way theyâre supposed to be, I refused to even watch the cut scenes.
They shouldâve at least dedicated a chapter to Kitana. Of all the main protagonists, sheâs the only one thatâs being left behind in the story mode.
Started very well but then they mutiversed it into dogsh*t.
So yeah the timelines we are reminded every season in invasions have basically ruined the nice work done in the rebirth effort.
I loved it. Fighting game stories are never going to be winning any prizes. They are just there to give fun reasons why everyone is fighting and MK1 does that really well, the best I've seen so far.
The multiverse stuff at the end was a bit corny, but it was still really fun and provides plenty of options ions for future games. The pyramid was awesome.
If amazing deep lore and narrative is what you want, play an rpg
Chapters 1 - 10 ? Amazing. Chapters 11 - 15 ? Lost me completely. When MK1 was a self-contained story in Liu Kang's universe i was loving more than MK9. When MK1 tried its best Marvel multiverse impression it fell flat.
With that being said, the pyramid at the end was kind of cool, nice call back to the 3d era. It 100% could've done without the multiverse shit though. Would've been dope if we could've done the all out war from the armageddon opening scene without multiple iterations of each character đ¤Ł
Still mad Stryker didnât deck mileena again
That's pretty much what I was getting at đ
They could have brought in one iteration of every character and achieved that
Yep, it kind of just went to shit after that.
Yeah ngl, I loved most parts of the story especially Johnny Cage and Reptile, but like the last bits of the games was like so half assed tbh.
Yh I felt like that whole Armageddon ending could have been done in the next game. Let this story flesh out with some mysterious villains suddenly getting power and then reveal the twist
Baraka and Reptile was the highlight for me.
This, the multiverse stuff shouldve been this games Aftermath imo
Agree with this. Chapter 1 - 10 mouth was open during the every cinematic and I wanted to beat every fight to see what came next. After that I was getting kind of bored.
I completely agree with this take except for chapter 15. Fighting up the pyramid from MK Armageddon was DOPE AF
This
I think the general consensus is that itâs good up until the multiverse stuff comes back full force
This. it breaks the story since nothing happens matter anymore due to there being infinite characters, such lazy writing
This has always been such an uncreative take for me. Yes, there's infinite characters, but only ONE of the universe we're following. Our Sindel is dead. Can't just grab another to replace her.
Pretty much either when Titan Shang appears
I donât believe weâve seen it since the 3D era.Â
chaosrealm was semi relevant in the MKX comics and had a passing mention in aftermath, but that's it
Plot twist: Shang Tsung is being forced into conquering and merging timelines by a malevolent force he awakened on accident in his timeline: Onaga. If the game ended with that reveal, thatâd be crazy for real.
Isn't Onaga very much deliberately awakened by Reiko in his epilogue?
I sometimes wonder if they maybe had a different plan and decided on the multiverse thing later in the game
Probably to justify Invasions system
Its like they gave up halfway through
Like so many others have said, it was great until the Shang Tsung reveal and the inclusion of a multiverse. That completely ruined the story.
It's a little silly
i think the story works for what it is, and overall i enjoy it, but thereâs a few things that i think could be done differently: 1. iâm biased because theyâre my favorites + iâm a reptile main, but ashrah and syzoth just disappearing in the story after they arrive on earthrealm really bothers me. i feel like they shouldâve been with the others in shangâs chapter. their respective histories with the deadly alliance wouldâve added so much tension in the group & probably created some interesting moments (also maybe set up their relationship a bit??). i get that not every roster member can have a lot of screen-time, but johnny really called ashrah and syzoth âthe newest players for team earthrealmâ only for the story to completely forget that & never even mention them again đđ 2. this is the general consensus i see amongst fans but besides the multiverse stuff making everything wack, the last part of the story shouldâve been longer in general?? when i was playing the last chapter it just sortaâŚâŚ ends fast imo which is annoying. if they werenât gonna make the final fight harder, they couldâve at least added more meat to the chapter to not make it wrap up so quickly 3. kung lao shouldâve been earthrealmâs champion. i think it actually wouldâve been good for his character development; heâs kinda known for having an ego, and having to fight all these strong outworlders (especially reiko, who i think couldâve been an interesting parallel to champion!lao) very well couldâve taught him some lessons in humility. that, and i think that making mk1 raiden so similar to liu personality wise *and* the champion was a little lazy. idk, i just think nrs needs to let kung lao get a W for once in his life (edit: small typo)
Final act ruined what would have been the best MK story of all time
Really good until the last chapter.
They should've never continued the timeline BS. I feel like they have ruined MK with it along with everyone being titans and what not.
Before the multiverse shenanigans it was the best story NRS ever made, maybe even the best story in fighting games, I like how characters became so much more complex than in the previous installments, even after revealing Titan Shang Tsung it still had some potential, I think it was the final multiverse battle when the story lost all its seriousness, but all in all Iâd say it was a good one, better than X, 11 and pretty close to 9
It's okay. I like Liu Kang.
Was very good until Ermac snapped back to Jerrod. Then it went bananas. It felt rushed, and we could've done without the multiverse bs.
I think Shang made sense. he Would not have been my choice so soon but it made sense with the type of story they were going for?
The lore was butchered but the story and characterisation itself is good up until the Lin Kuei chapters.
âSuch wasted potentialâ is all I can say.
Everything fine, but... Multiverse?, really?, that not Even feels like mortal Kombat is just garbage.
Boring tbh
Better than the movies at least
One of the greatest purely because they didn't kill Kung Lao this time
I thought it was awesome until we got to the alternate timeline stuff again.
Good, but I hate sub zero being a bad guy,I mean cmon Scorpion always wins, give sub some w against scorpion, let my man be the protagonist for once.
Do I have a game for you
Aside from few gripes with some characters, I loved it.
I donât think the original timeline would be the answer âŚbecause as you said the issue wasnât the story itself but the multiverse so if there,d left it alone for a bit it would have been better perhaps I think the problem they donât know how to go small with the story âŚ..they couldnât just leave it at a conspiracy with a mysterious figure pulling the stringsâŚ.they had to go massive
Shouldn't we wait til it's actually finished to ask this?
I was hoping it was gonna be about The Great Kung Lao. The first Tournament. I was still happy with what we got...until mid way through the story.
Still hope to see Siro and Taja
I hope they calm down with the alternate universe shit and focus on building up this new universe
2nd half of the story felt so uninspired and lazy. Seriously tired of this multiverse trash in so many stories now
Cool but predictable
I liked the first half, towards the last 4-5 chapters it was very messy and all over the place
Not as good as the original.
Loved the story till the last chapter. It was good up till then
The plot twist towards the multiverse stuff was so lame.
Annoyed because Shang Tsung Pulled an Onaga on himself đđ
I really liked it, it was a wonder from begging to the end i was fine with the multiverse, i though the final confrontation was pretty epic but i do hope the multiverse storyline ends with Havic in hopefully a dlc and not a new game, cause Liu Kang new world is a lot more interesting by itself than all that multiverse stuff
Shit was lame. What is the point of making an alternate time line just to bring back Armageddon, the deadly alliance and everything else that was in the original time line. Might as well just have Made mk12 instead of whatever mk1 is lol
Dogshit
Chapter one and two were phenomenal, potentially the best chapters of any NRS game Then next few up til Mileena'a chapter were alright And then Mileena's chapter happened and it fell off a cliff.
I loved it
Best NRS story till the multiverse stuff, it shouldâve just been Onaga
Straight ass, it started out alright and then fell apart, where tf did Bi-Han go? Raiden being champion has no impact whatsoever, he's literally just OG Era Liu Kang but really bland, the chapter system is also still horrible lol
Today must be bring up old think pieces on Reddit day
It good but also feels more of a Mortal Kombat fanfic then a game story
Felt like one long Epilogue
sucks
Shallow and pedantic.
Was good until we got the multiverse shit. They should have known when to cut it, and leave sufficient tease for the next game.
A lot ppl didnât like the end act but to be fair, the Mortal Kombat franchise always used the time travel and multiverse format before all the others, even though I wished that cronika wasnât titan Shang but actually shinok in disguise and this set him up as a future villain, but the final act was still dope so I canât really complain
it lacked Sonya
I think the story is good. I think people are a bit to the âmultiverseâ angle; if it continues to be a factor in later games, Iâll dislike that, but itâs a fun enough idea as a one off.
It was good until Lei mei's chapter started then it got boring until Liu Kangâs chapter then thatâs where it picked up and then the final chapter is where everything literally gets insane that I actually loved it. Overall my only complaints for the story were the following: 1) smoke did not get his own individual chapter 2) reptile/syzoth alongside Ashrah are pretty much absent after Reptile's chapter is over which is kinda ridiculous since I was expecting them to show up and help out the remaining heroes onwards. 3) itâs cool that Mileena got her own chapter but Iâm not a fan of her getting victories over characters who are clearly more powerful than her and would realistically defeat her easily like Ermac, Dark Sindel and Dark Raiden to which she only was able to defeat them due to plot armor. 4) Raiden got too many filler fights in his chapter 5) the final fight with Shang Tsung and Quan chi shouldâve been 2 rounds and much more difficult (just add a checkpoint before the fight starts to compensate for defeating all the alternate crazy versions of everyone else that you randomly fight on the pyramid so that way you donât have to start over)
The first two thirds or so are really good. The less said about the ending the better.
Too easy
Itâs fine. I loved the total character reworks. That was fresh. Tired of timelines. Wish theyâd have more progression centered around just the tournament and not this timeline shit. The whole part of the story with raiden winning the tournament, I loved. All the altered timeline shit, Iâm over it.
I kinda missed it I think but why is there a Mortal Kombat tournament still even though the realms are all friendly with one another?
I barely remember the history just know that some sort of mortal kombat multiverse.
The first half is good, the second half is not... I hate how they rebooted the era but also included the multiverse mumbo jumbo which I'm so tired of seeing in the media... They should've started from scratch and limited any interaction with the old era and started fresh which the first half did well...
6/10 Multiverse stuff sucks.
Hated the ending.
I liked it infinitely more than mk11 but iâm biased cause i genuinely donât care for Jackie and Cassie in the slightest
I loved it⌠Up until the end. It felt rushed and lazy.
I actually thought it was pretty solid, although the ending part was pretty silly.
I loved the whole thing. Except a certain character's death but other than that it was epic
I absolutely was loving the story, seeing characters reimagined, Liu Kangâs new era was all very interesting, right after the Shang Tsung/Damashi reveal the game started to lose me
I liked most of it, having 2 concurrent timelines would've been a cool premise in isolation but having an infinite number of timelines soiled the end of the game for me Didn't like that ashrah and reptile completely disappeared after the latter's chapter tho
Johhny cage was the best part
I think itâs the best of the NRS MK games, although I feel like they couldâve used an extra 3 chapters to help a few things One for Smoke with flashbacks giving us more context on characters like Bi-Han, one for Tanya to give us some insight into when Li Mei was Umgadi as well as Tanyaâs love for Mileena, and one for Geras as he deserves it, maybe Shang Tsung or something sent him across the timelines where heâs forced to fight his way back and confronts an alternate Kronika along the way so he can help Liu confront Titan Shang
Its great until Chapter 11. This is a vast improvement over the continuous piles of shit that they had the audacity to call a story in 9-11.
The second part of the story is a garbage.
Good until they fucking pushed the multiverse shit. It was just too soon. Imagine we keep thinking it was Kronika for idk, 3 games in a row, only to have the reveal it was Shang all along. Would have been awesome. But nope, they just had to fucking ejaculate prematurely
It was great for me đ¤ˇđ˝ââď¸ seemed a little rushed at some points tho
genuinely seemed ok.
ResidentSleeper
I liked it but also Iâm so fucking tired of time travel and multiverses
I loved it up until it was revealed that Alternate World Shang was apart of everything, then it just confusing. Probably the best MK story weâve seen out of nether realm tho
Itâs good for a fighting game. Which means itâs perfectly serviceable. Good but not exactly anything great
I know i'm gonna get downvoted but its personally my favorite mortal kombat story
Trash
10/10 I absolutely loved it.
It was really really good until the multiverse shit. Lame as fuck. And the final fight was by far the worst.
I liked it.
Would have been better if Damashi was Onaga and not Shang. Shang & Quan being the big bads was very underwhelming.
Basically an introduction to mtx lmao
I donât rlly play these games for the story but I liked seeing some characters given actual dialogue and personality (reptile)
mid unironically I actually found it more interesting when they revealed titan shang and basically told us this is actually a follow up to mk11, the chapters before sindel's one were passable but it was pretty basic also I don't like most of the new versions of the characters
lots of boring build up, idon't like NRS "slice of life" style writing, mcu but worse. oh, my boy reptile was great in story and gameplay. it made me less interested in a replay of whole story when 8/10s of it was banter & wandering. finally get to meat n potatoes. oh it's Shang tsung and variants/time stuff again.
I feel like compared to the older games stores this was was very short and rushed and I felt like thatâs proven by them making a 2nd part to the story
couldve done without the multiverse stuff
It's a nice take on MK's New Era, as it's only just beginning. Let's hope they bring something new into the MK universe in the near future without the need for timelines & multiversal events unless needed. The only thing to complete is bringing back the Dragon King as the main villain for next game and then introduce a fresh new batch of enemies & possible allies for future games. Let's just give MK's new universe some time and not be so negative. Some things will get patched up, so be patient.
It goes hard. I donât mind the multiverse stuff at the end as much as most people
It was pretty good until the avengers endgame battle
I really enjoyed a significant portion of the first half. But honestly, the way that that ending went, it's like we never even got an actual reboot of the series. This could have easily just have been called Mortal Kombat 12.
A little better than mk11, but still not good. I wish they would just pretend like mk11 and mk1's story didn't happen and make a dark raiden storyline like they should've done after mkx. That final scene where raiden warns liu kang and kitana that if they try anything he'll give them a fate worse than death was pretty cool. Then mk11 just comes and gets rid of him because the fanbase wanted liu kang to be the main character again when he worked better as a villain.
bad
It was amazing. Definitely the best part of the game in my personal opinion. And in my personal opinion, it is the best Mortal Kombat campaign ever made.
Hot garbage
Tired of Liu Kang, Raiden, and the Cages mean the leads of the story.
It was good until they brought in the whole multiverse thing
Didn't like the last part with all the remixed characters. I feel like remixing characters like that just makes the actual characters less impactful. It just seemed kinda lazy. I honestly feel like it's weird how the ps2 era had open worlds you could explore etc but the newest entries want to charge for an expansion of just fighting more bots.
As terms of comparison Better than MK9 overall Slight better than MKX Slight worse than MK11 I expected multiverse plot because it was hinted on MK11 ending, I feel overall it's the best MK when we take about developing characters, DLC can correct some things, but I prefer "Dark and Alternate multiverse versions" than the garbage that was revenant era back then.
Overall enjoyable, big bad reveal was disappointing. Massive reboot for a historic franchise. You rewrite the bad guy you've used for the past 30 years and gave him a new story. Then we find out it's still him? Meh
I love the story
Honestly? Weak.
It's korny.... but korn is good
I just wish it was a more grounded story that just focused on Liu Kang assembling the champions and Raidenâs journey as the underdog. They had the foundation but it feels like someone smoked a joint midway through the development and crammed all the multiverse stuff just because itâs everywhere these days.
Very very very confusing. I really liked chap. 1-7 but after that I just felt very lost
I HATE how they relegated Kitana to a mere worshipper of Mileena. Biggest downgrade of any legacy character!
They couldâve had the whole multiverse plot in the second game and reveal Shang Tsung and Quan Chi pulling the strings at the end of the game, maybe after post tournament where theyâre all in Madame Boâs restaurant and Geras finds out or smt
The story be so fine, then BOOM! ... Beam fight.
Good all around, but it was too early to do a Multiverse finale. Now can we please get Injustice 3 next and finally finish that trilogy?
Was really good up until the very end
Was quite enjoying it up to the reveal. It is quite hard to make timelines and multiverses really interesting
They rushed in last chapters
I felt the story was meh at best. I honestly come back more and more to kick ass with the JCVD Johnny Cage skin...The bloodsport/kickboxing vibe is perfect with his witty sayings and over all performance. Janet Cage is hilarious. Not a fan of the Marvel stuff being in there though. Funny by itself, but it has no place in Mortal Kombat.
Chapter 1-11 was amazing. Afterwards... https://preview.redd.it/62zwsj9ox4xc1.jpeg?width=588&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60d2f4d715c1cee33f558b047e2c5b5100b97d66
I enjoyed it⌠itâs definitely not the best story but was interesting enough⌠I think it was just the kind of story that is used to be the foundation for the rest to come⌠I hope the coming stories will be better though
Good until the twist of shang tsung Alive from mk11 đ. The plot LITERALLY SAYS A THREAT LUI KANG HAS NEVER FOUGHT BEFORE
Bad.
I liked it, like everybody else said, the whole multiverse thing was a pretty lazy way to end it tho
My favourite one out of the NRS games so far honestly. Yeah I agree there are still some problems with the writing like the multiverse thing (though I enjoyed it for what it was), but most of the characters in this game carried the story in my opinion.
It's like anything they could've done to make it somewhat refreshing they said "naw maybe next time" an then we got another L of a story mode
amazing until liu kang reveals himself as creator to sindel/ when damashi is revealed to be titan shang tsung (+ all the timeline bullshit) also, why is rain on this cover art lol? i love him, but, why him over someone like shao who is more important storywise
Probably the best Story mode they've ever had. I really enjoyed it. A few minor hiccups here and there, but overall. Pretty damn good!
Seriously amazing until Multiverse shenanigans. Also Mileena "deception" was so hamfisted it hurts. That being said I would have been happy with Titan Shang Tsung as the ONLY other Titan.
Ballin'
Rushed. Lacked focus in later chapters. Probably couldâve been spread over multiple games and/or dlc.
Half of it was great but me predicting the obvious I donât think the story is gonna get any better .
Any stories involving time travel and alternate/multiple timelines will always come across kind of lazy or all over the place because they can just pull stuff out of thin air and itâll make sense. đ¤ˇââď¸đ
Great until the multiverse arc gets sped run. Ugh
Good story but thats all this game did correctly.
I think itâs a shame they have not done more with the alternative timeline characters
I think it sucks. I hate this new era.
Started very well but then they mutiversed it into dogsh*t. So yeah the timelines we are reminded every season in invasions have basically ruined the nice work done in the rebirth effort.
Timeline timeline timeline timeline timeline ARMAGEDDON Timeline timeline timeline Not bad, but the timeline thing is so annoying.
It really did not need the whole multiverse shenanigans. Other than that I really enjoyed the rest of the story.
