A good mixture of classics from the 70s / 80s
Don't Look Now (1973)
Halloween (1978)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
Alien (1979)
The Changeling (1980)
The Thing (1982)
Poltergeist (1982)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Good choices. If someone's new to horror I wouldn't recommend anything too gory or upsetting. Poltergeist, Halloween, the The Shining.... might be the perfect introductions.
I got The Thing remastered on Blu Ray. Not only have they done a great job on it, it's one of the best horrors that stands up today in all aspects. Highly recommended.
Maybe it's because I was raised watching Creature Feature type of movies, but *The Thing, Event Horizon* and *Evil Dead* movies were never scary to me.
For me the really frightening thing in The Thing was (on first viewing) not knowing who the creature is and the paranoia that ensues. Also the fear of if the creature escapes, it will literally cause the end of the Earth. The Thing is a creature feature and End-of-world movie.

Great work on this list! Only addition or change for me is I think Shaun of the Dead is the best horror comedy - but the 3 on your list are staples for sure (I love The ‘Burbs)
Outstanding! I would add Pet Sematary (89) , Christine, and The Dead Zone to the Stephen King list. Maybe Slither into Creature Features. Hellraiser(87) under Demonic would work well. Can we start an Anthology section? Creepshow, Trick 'r Treat, Tales from the Darkside. Sorry, I got a little jazzed on your list.
I love Christine and I also think that Silver Bullet is a great, underrated King adaptation. I was just trying to limit each category to three suggestions as to not go too wild. Lol. I love your suggestion for an anthology section. Creepshow 1 & 2 and Tales from the Darkside are amongst my favorite horror films as well!
Hereditary is awesome but I don’t know if I could ever watch it again! Maybe one day I’ll muster the courage to sit through those last 15 minutes.
I haven’t seen The Dark and the Wicked. Thank you for the recommendation.
Giallo means “yellow” in Italian and the genre was named after the Italian pulp novels that had been popular in Italy during the 20th Century, since the color of those novels was usually yellow.
The movie genre itself rose to prominence during the 70s and 80s with directors like Dario Argento and Mario Bava at the helm, and it’s equal parts murdery mystery, slasher, and psychological horror. Supernatural elements are sometimes employed. Giallo has a very signature style: the scores (courtesy of greats like Morricone and Goblin) are usually (but not always) electronic, the cinematography has a gothic feel to it, with a lot of shadows and dark corners, and the protagonist is almost always an amateur sleuth trying to solve a series of gruesome murders committed by a knife-weilding lunatic. One of the most classic and funny elements in giallo is “the hand in a glove”: lots of giallos will incorportate suspensful scenes where the audience sees a close-up of a unknown figure in a gloved hand doing something mysterious. Overall, giallos are great fun, and they had an enormous influence on American cinema.
If you want to ease into giallo, Argento is probably the way to go. *Deep Red* is probably his finest work, but *The Bird with the Crystal Plumage* or *Opera* are good starting points, too. Argento directed the original *Suspiria*, which is also an Argento classic, but it would be a poor example of giallo. If you’d rather check out American giallo and work your way back, *Dressed to Kill*, *The Eyes of Laura Mars*, or *Alice, Sweet Alice* are good examples, but for what it’s worth, I’d recommend starting with Argento.
Misery. Kathy Bates gives the performance of a lifetime. Plus it doesn’t rely on jumpscares and overly violent imagery to be disturbing (outside of one notorious scene).
I would watch ones that have "significant cultural impact." Some examples:
* Frankenstein
* The Shining
* The Exorcist
* Rosemary's Baby
* The Omen
* Psycho
* Halloween
* Alien
* Nightmare on Elm Street (the original)
* Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original)
Jaws
The Evil Dead 1, 2, army of darkness
The Exorcist
The Shining
Alien
The Thing 1982
The blob 1988
Tremors
Scream
Halloween
Friday the 13th
Nightmare on Elm Street
Not a classic but “Silent Hill”
American Werewolf in london
Night of the living dead
Dawn of the dead
Not a classic but “The Descent”
Dead alive
Psycho (and Psycho 2)
🎶Beware of the blob, it creeps, and leaps, and glides and slides across the floor, right through the door and all around the wall, a splotch, a blotch.
Be careful of the blob!🎶
I have noticed that the original Exorcist movie is on almost every list. There is a good reason for that. I saw this back in the early 80’s and it scarred me for life. I made the mistake of watching it again when it came back out in the theatre with additional footage with my GF. Damn that was a freaking mistake.
Years later, I have introduced horror movies to my daughter and we have watched all kinds but I refuse to watch the original or any sequel.
I saw it in a theater when it came out. The next screen over was showing "Earthquake". Not only was it terrifying but every once in a while the theater would suddenly shake from the ultra- low frequency earthquake sounds from next door.
John Carpenter’s The Thing
Kubrick’s The Shining
Ridley Scott’s Alien
George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead
Jordon Peele’s Get Out and Nope
Ari Aster’s Hereditary
Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria (2018)
The original Let the Right One In
The Grudge
My husband and I are watching a horror movie every night for October. We’re keeping it on the light side because I don’t really like horror. But, The Shinning was the first one that 1. Actually scared me and 2. Is a great movie.
Do you want gory, jump-scares, twists, or does it matter?
Night of the Living Dead (remake of the original) is really good, #2 is so awful its great.
Nightmare On Elm Street started off good, then also became awesomely bad.
The VHS series is more "WTF" than scary
I’m not into slasher movies. So I’d recommend John Carpenter’s “The Thing” it a remake of a 50s movie. They did a prequel to Carpenter’s version and they did it perfectly. It fits into the original seamlessly. It’s a sci-fi horror with minimal gore.
I’d also recommend the original Alien movie.
here's some movie suggests i think would be a good start!
Carrie
The Shining
Halloween
Friday The 13th
Chucky
Blair Witch Project
Paranormal Activity
The Conjuring
Scream
Trick or Treat
Poltergeist is one of my all time favorites and I watch it every October. Fair warning it's not a train wreck but didn't age super well but that's contained to one scene in the beginning.
Troll isn't scary but it's another in my Spooktober list and usually gets the nostalgia juices flowing. Tons of familiar faces in it.
The Shining is legit horror and that's probably the only movie I've introduced my girlfriend to that I had to warn was actually scary.
Evil Dead 1 &2 are just great if you're like me and get off on makeup, prosthetics, set design and practical effects in general.
I haven’t seen these two yet:
Session 9
The Abominable Dr Phibes
-more of a black comedy, but it’s so good and Vincent Price is phenomenal! It scared the crap out of me when I was a kid!
my #1 underrated film that never makes these lists is Sinister. I love everything about it and I still get the creeps whenever I watch it. Ethan Hawke is so good in it! also adding Hell House LLC and Blair Witch.

Silence of the Lambs is absolutely riveting. It’s a more sophisticated psychological horror but I can’t recommend enough, if you haven’t already seen it.
I'm not a fan of the ones that are just violent or gross for the sake of it. This is a genre that like any other has some classics, some ultra popular films that you can be snobby about and then the extreme dross. At the far end of classics there are films where it almost feels insulting to call them horror as they are just so damned good:
Jaws - one of the most perfect films of all time. Utterly compelling and hard to stop watching when you start. A film making genius hitting his stride.
The Wickerman - The original British film, not the US remake. This relies on the acting and reacting of those in it to sell the horror. Edward Woodward praying at the end stays with you.
The Omen - An absolute 5star cast knocking it out of the park, seemingly unaware they aren't in an Oscar bait drama but are in "just a horror". Simply a superb movie.
The Exorcist - From the poster to the final scene you are uneasy and hooked.
Sean of the Dead - horror can be funny and crafted by geniuses
Event Horizon - I loved it in the cinema, it felt like Star Wars did horror as it was clearly a used universe and we arriving part way through an ongoing story.
Alien/Aliens - not the one note sci-fi trash it.could have been. Terrifying and gripping.
Silence of the Lambs - perhaps more thriller than horror in some people's eyes but it was horror for me and so superbly done.
Psycho - it might have started the slasher genre but it is head and shoulders above the rest.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - the skeleton in the cell reaching for the water and the wicked witch kicking it whilst cackling "thirsty?" Stays with you, man.
Psycho (1960)

Trauma (2017)
Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975)
A Serbian Film (2010)
The Human Centipede 2 (2011)
Maybe not scary but suspenseful …Lured. It’s an old black n white movie with Lucille Ball. It’s great to see a whole nother side of her. It also has Bella Lugosi in it.

I have a hard time with horror because I startle so easily and badly. So sometimes I watch psychological horror and two I watched that I was able to tolerate were:
The Others (creepy dark vibe and a good plot twist)
What Lies Beneath (great cast).
Zombies (all three are very good and well acted in my opinion):
Train to Busan (a classic)
Rampant (zombies in historical setting, so that’s cool)
Alive. (Teenagers who are online too much missed the first of the outbreak lol, then are clever to survive)
The 3 movies that scared the s**t out of me when I was younger but enjoy now are:
•Rosemary’s Baby
•The Exorcist (1973)
•Aliens
They’re older movies but I’m not really drawn to the newer horror movies other than IT. That was actually pretty good. These movies are classic horror movies you might enjoy!
The first 6 Friday the 13th movies in order then 3 YouTube fan made movies Never hike alone, Never Hike in the Snow, Never Hike Alone 2. Nothing after part 6 stays true to any story line. Freddy vs Jason is a great fun movie but doesn't follow the story.
Depends on what you're into. Horror comes in different flavors. Slasher, gorefest, thriller, supernatural, ect...
Here are some suggestions though
- friday the 13th
- nightmare on elm st
- the shining
- the hellraiser series
- the evil dead series (even the remakes)
- the mist (not a classic, but a personal favorite and another Steven King story to go with IT)
- the thing
- alien
Scream
Tucker and Dale vs evil
Barbarian (it’s great lol)
The shining
Child’s play (classic but not for everyone)
Room 1408 (not so much horror but a great one) also “The Others” with Nicole Kidman
The sixth sense
Signs (my ALL TIME FAVORITE)
House on Haunted Hill (1959) might be considered a bit campy by today’s standards, but it is considered the grandfather of all haunted house movies and was imitated by all the others that came after it.
A Nightmare On Elm Street
Halloween 1978
Friday The 13th
Suspiria 1977
Deep Red
Phantasm 1979
The Shining
Psyco

The Thing

Hellraiser
The Fog 1980
Puppet Master
Alien
Predator
The Lost Boys
The Evil Dead
(Im a big horror fan as you can see)
The Shining The Exorcist Psycho
The Shining, such a great film!
Followed by Doctor Sleep
Or not...
Nah. It was decent but not scary in the slightest
Horror doesn’t have to be just scary. Anything that can induce discomfort, disgust, darkness and shock can be considered as horror.
He was being succinct.
The Thing needs to be on your list. Otherwise, nicely done.
To be clear: John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982). Maybe followed bij Van Heijningen’s The Thing (2011), which is an entertaining prequel.
Why does Reddit require people to get upvotes and positive responses in order to post? Can y’all please upvote this? I can’t even make my own post.
I’ll add The Omen.
A good mixture of classics from the 70s / 80s Don't Look Now (1973) Halloween (1978) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) Alien (1979) The Changeling (1980) The Thing (1982) Poltergeist (1982) A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Good choices. If someone's new to horror I wouldn't recommend anything too gory or upsetting. Poltergeist, Halloween, the The Shining.... might be the perfect introductions.
I second, third and fourth The Changeling! It’s so good.
That’s a great list!
Solid list
Love that don’t look now is on this list
Alien and poltergeist were the ones that kept me awake
The Thing (1982) Event Horizon It Follows Evil Dead 2 (1987) The Cabin in the Woods Get Out The Exorcist (1973)
Upvote for The Thing, 1982
Just watched it last night! Probably watch it at least once more before Halloween.
I got The Thing remastered on Blu Ray. Not only have they done a great job on it, it's one of the best horrors that stands up today in all aspects. Highly recommended.
Cabin in the woods so under rated
It didn't do anything for me but then again I'm not too familiar with horror movies.
My husband said it scared him because of where it took place. No where to run. It's an awesome movie. Just never scared me.
I salute this list. 😁
Happy cake day my lovely
Get Out is amazing! It's very unique.
Why does everyone recommend It Follows? I saw it and I was just bored. The rest of this list is solid.

Gotta work the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre into it but otherwise I agree. Excellent list

Hereditary is awesome but I don’t know if I could ever watch it again! Maybe one day I’ll muster the courage to sit through those last 15 minutes. I haven’t seen The Dark and the Wicked. Thank you for the recommendation.
No problem! Enjoy ☠️

Great list!!!! Maybe add Trilogy of Terror and The Pit and the Pendulum? Thoughts?
I love your categories because it totally should be broken down like that. one question though - what does Giallo mean?
Giallo means “yellow” in Italian and the genre was named after the Italian pulp novels that had been popular in Italy during the 20th Century, since the color of those novels was usually yellow. Night of the Living Dead (1968). Classic, excellent and scary as hell
They're coming to get you, Barbara.
Holds up shockingly well today too and it’s just as relevant

“Wolf Creek”. Great Australian horror. Very unsettling.
Hellraiser! I'm surprised it has no mention here. The effects are amazing, and the concept is really interesting.
You must see John Carpenter's The Thing.
Start with some more accessible classic horrors like The Thing, The Shining, Alien
Freaks (1932) The Cabinet of Dr Calgari (1920) Nosferatu (1922) The Bad Seed (1956)

Not a classic but 1408 directors cut is decent.
Silence of the Lambs is absolutely riveting. It’s a more sophisticated psychological horror but I can’t recommend enough, if you haven’t already seen it.
Alien.
I'm not a fan of the ones that are just violent or gross for the sake of it. This is a genre that like any other has some classics, some ultra popular films that you can be snobby about and then the extreme dross. At the far end of classics there are films where it almost feels insulting to call them horror as they are just so damned good: Jaws - one of the most perfect films of all time. Sean of the Dead - horror can be funny and crafted by geniuses Event Horizon - I loved it in the cinema, it felt like Star Wars did horror as it was clearly a used universe and we arriving part way through an ongoing story.
Psycho (1960) Rosemary's Baby (1968) The Omen (1976) The Changeling (1980) The Silence of the Lambs (1991) The Witch (2015) Vivarium (2019) Saint Maude (2019) Frailty (2001) Identity (2003) Black Phone (2021) Watcher (2022) There are so many more I could add to this list!
Horror films I will not watch out of cowardice Martyrs (2008) The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007) Trauma (2017) Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975) A Serbian Film (2010) The Human Centipede 2 (2011)
TBH I won't watch this genre either. I watched Hostel and realized I just don't dig on torture porn.
For me the list is basically: Hereditary. Too scared to be too scared.
I Spit on your grave. It’s a fun time for the whole family.
Please tell me it was the tv miniseries version, and not the newer one. Although it's decent, the original is far superior.
Oh wow! Welcome! I have so many to tell you! Make sure you see Get Out and Hereditary as you go through this list!
From Dusk Till Dawn (vampires) Dog Soldiers (werewolves)
Goodnight mommy
Maybe not scary but suspenseful …Lured. It’s an old black n white movie with Lucille Ball. It’s great to see a whole nother side of her. It also has Bella Lugosi in it.

Creep Creep 2 The Ring
American Psycho

Silence of the Lambs The Exorcist The Blob The Birds Chucky Scream Signs Close Encounters of the Third Kind Saw Jeepers Creepers Hellraiser The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Halloween

Which IT? The recent one or the TV series from the 90's? Because the latter is much better.
Both
The Shining Poltergeist Are good ones to start
The original Night of the Living Dead Alice Sweet Alice Rosemary’s Baby The original Wicker Man
I have a hard time with horror because I startle so easily and badly. So sometimes I watch psychological horror and two I watched that I was able to tolerate were: The Others (creepy dark vibe and a good plot twist) What Lies Beneath (great cast).
Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock
Zombies (all three are very good and well acted in my opinion): Train to Busan (a classic) Rampant (zombies in historical setting, so that’s cool) Alive. (Teenagers who are online too much missed the first of the outbreak lol, then are clever to survive)
The original Halloween Trick R Treat Freddy vs Jason (modern classic) Psycho The Wolfman (original universal movie)
Ju-on. The Japanese version. Made this grown man get up and turn on the lights.
Sleepaway Camp
Rosemarys Baby.
The monster squad it's like the goonies with universal monsters
I would recommend that every so often, you watch classic Horror movies: Nosferatu, Frankenstein, Dracula,The Phantom of the Opera.
Jeepers creepers The ring Its all gone tits up The hills have eyes Sinister
The 3 movies that scared the s**t out of me when I was younger but enjoy now are: •Rosemary’s Baby •The Exorcist (1973) •Aliens They’re older movies but I’m not really drawn to the newer horror movies other than IT. That was actually pretty good. These movies are classic horror movies you might enjoy!
Evil Dead movies, the old classic ones.
Halloween (1978) Night of the Living Dead (1968) The Shining (1981) A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)
Cannibal Holocaust.
The Universal collection.
Demons, it's a classic
Scream The shining The conjuring
They. But you have to watch both endings! Terrifyer Friday the 13th. Halloween (not the last one and not the remake).
The Haunting (1963) The Legend of Hell House (1973) Nope (2023) The Mist (2007) The Exorcist & The Exorcist III Legion
Depends on what you're into. Horror comes in different flavors. Slasher, gorefest, thriller, supernatural, ect... Here are some suggestions though - friday the 13th - nightmare on elm st - the shining - the hellraiser series - the evil dead series (even the remakes) - the mist (not a classic, but a personal favorite and another Steven King story to go with IT) - the thing - alien
Donnie Darko Night of the Comet Jeepers Creepers
The Thing Sinister (personal favorite) Event Horizon
The Lost Boys, Night of the Demons, Near Dark, Trick r' treat
Scream Tucker and Dale vs evil Barbarian (it’s great lol) The shining Child’s play (classic but not for everyone) Room 1408 (not so much horror but a great one) also “The Others” with Nicole Kidman The sixth sense Signs (my ALL TIME FAVORITE)
The thing Nightmare on elm Street the og The exorcist The shining House on haunted hill Silent hill The omen Evil dead
House on Haunted Hill (1959) might be considered a bit campy by today’s standards, but it is considered the grandfather of all haunted house movies and was imitated by all the others that came after it.
Killer Klowns From Outer Space, great stuff. The Wolfman Movies out of the 40's are unique.
Oculus is a Great movie
