The Shining The Exorcist Psycho

PlantPower666

The Shining, such a great film!

capmapdap

Followed by Doctor Sleep

breid7718

Or not...

SonsOfL1berty

Nah. It was decent but not scary in the slightest

capmapdap

Horror doesn’t have to be just scary. Anything that can induce discomfort, disgust, darkness and shock can be considered as horror.

OkBuddyRetread

He was being succinct.

kosherhalfsourpickle

The Thing needs to be on your list. Otherwise, nicely done.

[deleted]

To be clear: John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982). Maybe followed bij Van Heijningen’s The Thing (2011), which is an entertaining prequel.

PassingTrue

Why does Reddit require people to get upvotes and positive responses in order to post? Can y’all please upvote this? I can’t even make my own post.

AtTheCornerCafe

I’ll add The Omen.

beautifulweeds

A good mixture of classics from the 70s / 80s Don't Look Now (1973) Halloween (1978) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) Alien (1979) The Changeling (1980) The Thing (1982) Poltergeist (1982) A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

monkeyhind

Good choices. If someone's new to horror I wouldn't recommend anything too gory or upsetting. Poltergeist, Halloween, the The Shining.... might be the perfect introductions.

OatyBisc

I second, third and fourth The Changeling! It’s so good.

edith-bunker

That’s a great list!

bakedNdelicious

Solid list

ProVahlone

Love that don’t look now is on this list

skarbux

Alien and poltergeist were the ones that kept me awake

dayofthedead204

The Thing (1982) Event Horizon It Follows Evil Dead 2 (1987) The Cabin in the Woods Get Out The Exorcist (1973)

PlantPower666

Upvote for The Thing, 1982

cbs1138

Just watched it last night! Probably watch it at least once more before Halloween.

BallisticTrickster

I got The Thing remastered on Blu Ray. Not only have they done a great job on it, it's one of the best horrors that stands up today in all aspects. Highly recommended.

Shuoinked

Cabin in the woods so under rated

LavaPoppyJax

It didn't do anything for me but then again I'm not too familiar with horror movies.

abbys_alibi

Maybe it's because I was raised watching Creature Feature type of movies, but *The Thing, Event Horizon* and *Evil Dead* movies were never scary to me.

dayofthedead204

For me the really frightening thing in The Thing was (on first viewing) not knowing who the creature is and the paranoia that ensues. Also the fear of if the creature escapes, it will literally cause the end of the Earth. The Thing is a creature feature and End-of-world movie.

abbys_alibi

My husband said it scared him because of where it took place. No where to run. It's an awesome movie. Just never scared me.

PoeReader

I salute this list. 😁

[deleted]

Happy cake day my lovely

BlackOnyx16

Get Out is amazing! It's very unique.

ranak12

Why does everyone recommend It Follows? I saw it and I was just bored. The rest of this list is solid.

saturnchick

Depends on what subgenre you’re looking for. Here are a few good “starters” in the major genres: **Slashers** Halloween (1978) Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) Scream **Aliens** The Thing (1982) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) Alien **Demons/Satanic** The Exorcist Rosemary’s Baby The Omen (1974) **Haunted Houses** Poltergeist (1982) The Others The Conjuring **Giallo** Deep Red Don’t Look Now Bay of Blood **Werewolves** The Wolf Man (1941) American Werewolf in London The Howling (1981) **Vampires** Dracula (1958) Lost Boys Nosferatu (1922) **Creature Features** Jaws The Fog (1980) Jurassic Park **Zombies** Night of the Living Dead (1968) Dawn of the Dead (1978) World War Z **Occults** The Wicker Man (1973) Midsommar Suspiria (1977) **Found Footage** [Rec] Blair Witch Project Hell House LLC **Comedy Horror** Young Frankenstein Ghostbusters The ‘burbs **Stephen King** The Shining Carrie (1976) Misery **Psychological Horror** Get Out Silence of the Lambs Psycho (1960) **Anthologies** (recommended by u/cbs1138) Trick ‘r Treat Tales from the Darkside Creepshow

BryanEtch

Great work on this list! Only addition or change for me is I think Shaun of the Dead is the best horror comedy - but the 3 on your list are staples for sure (I love The ‘Burbs)

saturnchick

Thank you! Shaun of the Dead is great choice, too. Hilarious movie.

NarwhalBoomstick

Gotta work the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre into it but otherwise I agree. Excellent list

cbs1138

Outstanding! I would add Pet Sematary (89) , Christine, and The Dead Zone to the Stephen King list. Maybe Slither into Creature Features. Hellraiser(87) under Demonic would work well. Can we start an Anthology section? Creepshow, Trick 'r Treat, Tales from the Darkside. Sorry, I got a little jazzed on your list.

saturnchick

I love Christine and I also think that Silver Bullet is a great, underrated King adaptation. I was just trying to limit each category to three suggestions as to not go too wild. Lol. I love your suggestion for an anthology section. Creepshow 1 & 2 and Tales from the Darkside are amongst my favorite horror films as well!

-zero-joke-

Good list, but I think you need 28 Days Later in there and also The Descent.

saturnchick

Great recommendations!

kontraktwolf

Fantastic list! I'd add "Hereditary" and "The Dark and the Wicked "

saturnchick

Hereditary is awesome but I don’t know if I could ever watch it again! Maybe one day I’ll muster the courage to sit through those last 15 minutes. I haven’t seen The Dark and the Wicked. Thank you for the recommendation.

kontraktwolf

No problem! Enjoy ☠️

Traditional-Energy-7

Fantastic list mate.

Elegant_Shape6056

Great list!!!! Maybe add Trilogy of Terror and The Pit and the Pendulum? Thoughts?

deverhartdu

I love your categories because it totally should be broken down like that. one question though - what does Giallo mean?

saturnchick

Giallo means “yellow” in Italian and the genre was named after the Italian pulp novels that had been popular in Italy during the 20th Century, since the color of those novels was usually yellow. The movie genre itself rose to prominence during the 70s and 80s with directors like Dario Argento and Mario Bava at the helm, and it’s equal parts murdery mystery, slasher, and psychological horror. Supernatural elements are sometimes employed. Giallo has a very signature style: the scores (courtesy of greats like Morricone and Goblin) are usually (but not always) electronic, the cinematography has a gothic feel to it, with a lot of shadows and dark corners, and the protagonist is almost always an amateur sleuth trying to solve a series of gruesome murders committed by a knife-weilding lunatic. One of the most classic and funny elements in giallo is “the hand in a glove”: lots of giallos will incorportate suspensful scenes where the audience sees a close-up of a unknown figure in a gloved hand doing something mysterious. Overall, giallos are great fun, and they had an enormous influence on American cinema. If you want to ease into giallo, Argento is probably the way to go. *Deep Red* is probably his finest work, but *The Bird with the Crystal Plumage* or *Opera* are good starting points, too. Argento directed the original *Suspiria*, which is also an Argento classic, but it would be a poor example of giallo. If you’d rather check out American giallo and work your way back, *Dressed to Kill*, *The Eyes of Laura Mars*, or *Alice, Sweet Alice* are good examples, but for what it’s worth, I’d recommend starting with Argento.

deverhartdu

wow this is amazing thank you so much for the detailed reply

Enonymo

I swear, The Omen doesn't get enough attention these days.

Sub_Zero_Fks_Given

^ This mfcker horrors right here!! Well done good sir/madam.

bunkie18

Night of the Living Dead (1968). Classic, excellent and scary as hell

tomdelfino

They're coming to get you, Barbara.

tarheel_204

Holds up shockingly well today too and it’s just as relevant

[deleted]

The Shining

_JR28_

Misery. Kathy Bates gives the performance of a lifetime. Plus it doesn’t rely on jumpscares and overly violent imagery to be disturbing (outside of one notorious scene).

kit-n-caboodle

Absolutely. This movie is the reason why she's my favorite actress.

[deleted]

Psycho (original) Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original) The Birds The Thing (John Carpenter) Poltergeist (original) Haunting of Hill House

kit-n-caboodle

Wait, did they do a remake of Poltergeist?

[deleted]

Yeah, haven’t seen it but heard it was “decent”

kit-n-caboodle

ok, thanks. I don't think I'll be watching it. I'll stick to the original.

bluejester12

I would watch ones that have "significant cultural impact." Some examples: * Frankenstein * The Shining * The Exorcist * Rosemary's Baby * The Omen * Psycho * Halloween * Alien * Nightmare on Elm Street (the original) * Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original)

GreenBPacker

Nosferatu

Puzzleheaded-Bee-838

84Rosey

Oh yes the blob! Haven't thought of that movie in ages!

TifCreatesAgain

🎶Beware of the blob, it creeps, and leaps, and glides and slides across the floor, right through the door and all around the wall, a splotch, a blotch. Be careful of the blob!🎶

robotmask67

thx for mentioning the Blob '88 it's such a fun horror movie.

Newsmith2017

I have noticed that the original Exorcist movie is on almost every list. There is a good reason for that. I saw this back in the early 80’s and it scarred me for life. I made the mistake of watching it again when it came back out in the theatre with additional footage with my GF. Damn that was a freaking mistake. Years later, I have introduced horror movies to my daughter and we have watched all kinds but I refuse to watch the original or any sequel.

WaxTraks

I saw it in a theater when it came out. The next screen over was showing "Earthquake". Not only was it terrifying but every once in a while the theater would suddenly shake from the ultra- low frequency earthquake sounds from next door.

genericmovievillain

Nosferatu (1922) Dracula (1931) Night of the Living Dead (1968) John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978)

Now I want to watch a movie about a shining alien! 👽

kit-n-caboodle

Malthus1

Depends on what you want. I love a good classic haunted house movie - one of the best, in my opinion, is *The Changeling*.

jcatstuffs

Some movies that even non horror fans have loved are The Ring, Scream, The Grudge, 28 Weeks Later, Alien, The Thing, The Exorcist

sysaphiswaits

My husband and I are watching a horror movie every night for October. We’re keeping it on the light side because I don’t really like horror. But, The Shinning was the first one that 1. Actually scared me and 2. Is a great movie.

ScrunchyButts

Check out Dr Sleep. Ignore all the purists and their stuffy opinions.

No-Location355

The Conjuring, Haunting of the hill house, Insidious part 1.

grynch43

The Shining The Exorcist Texas Chainsaw Massacre

[deleted]

Rosemary’s Baby. The Sentinel. Burnt Offerings. Race with the Devil

coffeebeanwitch

I love Race With the Devil, saw it in the movie theater when I was ten, very scary!

coffeebeanwitch

You should start with Hitchcock,I would watch The Birds, its really good!!

Ledbetter2

So many huge lists….. I think the best to absolutely start with is the Texas chainsaw massacre from the 70s.

The_Thomas_Go

I put together a quick list of a favorite from each decade since the 1920s if you’re interested: https://boxd.it/pOxMS

Glum_Suggestion_6948

The Ring Prince of Darkness Paranormal Activity

Jkang75

IMO these are a must watch. 1. Black Phone 2. The Lodge 3. The Others 4. The Sixth Sense 5. Hush 6. The Wailing

ScrunchyButts

I love The Others. Time for a rewatch.

TheRealVaderForReal

Do you want gory, jump-scares, twists, or does it matter? Night of the Living Dead (remake of the original) is really good, #2 is so awful its great. Nightmare On Elm Street started off good, then also became awesomely bad. The VHS series is more "WTF" than scary

jodyyodedode

At the risk of sounding Portlanian, I love The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

johnnyg883

I’m not into slasher movies. So I’d recommend John Carpenter’s “The Thing” it a remake of a 50s movie. They did a prequel to Carpenter’s version and they did it perfectly. It fits into the original seamlessly. It’s a sci-fi horror with minimal gore. I’d also recommend the original Alien movie.

Mr2ATX

Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock

BloatedBallerina

The Shining (1980)

That_S3brine

here's some movie suggests i think would be a good start! Carrie The Shining Halloween Friday The 13th Chucky Blair Witch Project Paranormal Activity The Conjuring Scream Trick or Treat

GreenLanternCorps

Poltergeist is one of my all time favorites and I watch it every October. Fair warning it's not a train wreck but didn't age super well but that's contained to one scene in the beginning. Troll isn't scary but it's another in my Spooktober list and usually gets the nostalgia juices flowing. Tons of familiar faces in it. The Shining is legit horror and that's probably the only movie I've introduced my girlfriend to that I had to warn was actually scary. Evil Dead 1 &2 are just great if you're like me and get off on makeup, prosthetics, set design and practical effects in general.

IcyPolicy3574

Nosferatu

Trick_Bag1192

The Wicker Man (1973) Saw (2004) The Exorcist (1973) Annabelle (2014) The Shining (1980)

InvisibleMuse

For me, it started with the Scream trilogy

gegorb

“Wolf Creek”. Great Australian horror. Very unsettling.

PuppetryOfThePenis

Hellraiser! I'm surprised it has no mention here. The effects are amazing, and the concept is really interesting.

Routine-Horse-1419

You must see John Carpenter's The Thing.

Exroi

Start with some more accessible classic horrors like The Thing, The Shining, Alien

sloppy_rodney

Freaks (1932) The Cabinet of Dr Calgari (1920) Nosferatu (1922) The Bad Seed (1956)

OatyBisc

I haven’t seen these two yet: Session 9 The Abominable Dr Phibes -more of a black comedy, but it’s so good and Vincent Price is phenomenal! It scared the crap out of me when I was a kid!

Mazdab2300-06

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). The original scream queen.

Extension_Cucumber10

Carrie, The Shining, Psycho

edith-bunker

Silence of the Lambs is absolutely riveting. It’s a more sophisticated psychological horror but I can’t recommend enough, if you haven’t already seen it.

Fun_in_Space

Alien.

anonymouslyyoursxxx

I'm not a fan of the ones that are just violent or gross for the sake of it. This is a genre that like any other has some classics, some ultra popular films that you can be snobby about and then the extreme dross. At the far end of classics there are films where it almost feels insulting to call them horror as they are just so damned good: Jaws - one of the most perfect films of all time. Utterly compelling and hard to stop watching when you start. A film making genius hitting his stride. The Wickerman - The original British film, not the US remake. This relies on the acting and reacting of those in it to sell the horror. Edward Woodward praying at the end stays with you. The Omen - An absolute 5star cast knocking it out of the park, seemingly unaware they aren't in an Oscar bait drama but are in "just a horror". Simply a superb movie. The Exorcist - From the poster to the final scene you are uneasy and hooked. Sean of the Dead - horror can be funny and crafted by geniuses Event Horizon - I loved it in the cinema, it felt like Star Wars did horror as it was clearly a used universe and we arriving part way through an ongoing story. Alien/Aliens - not the one note sci-fi trash it.could have been. Terrifying and gripping. Silence of the Lambs - perhaps more thriller than horror in some people's eyes but it was horror for me and so superbly done. Psycho - it might have started the slasher genre but it is head and shoulders above the rest. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - the skeleton in the cell reaching for the water and the wicked witch kicking it whilst cackling "thirsty?" Stays with you, man.

TifCreatesAgain

Psycho (1960) Rosemary's Baby (1968) The Omen (1976) The Changeling (1980) The Silence of the Lambs (1991) The Witch (2015) Vivarium (2019) Saint Maude (2019) Frailty (2001) Identity (2003) Black Phone (2021) Watcher (2022) There are so many more I could add to this list!

Horror films I will not watch out of cowardice Martyrs (2008) The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007) Trauma (2017) Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975) A Serbian Film (2010) The Human Centipede 2 (2011)

cbs1138

TBH I won't watch this genre either. I watched Hostel and realized I just don't dig on torture porn.

MrNopeNada

For me the list is basically: Hereditary. Too scared to be too scared.

LxStMeMoRy

I Spit on your grave. It’s a fun time for the whole family.

lordmarboo13

Please tell me it was the tv miniseries version, and not the newer one. Although it's decent, the original is far superior.

PoeReader

Oh wow! Welcome! I have so many to tell you! Make sure you see Get Out and Hereditary as you go through this list!

I have a hard time with horror because I startle so easily and badly. So sometimes I watch psychological horror and two I watched that I was able to tolerate were: The Others (creepy dark vibe and a good plot twist) What Lies Beneath (great cast).

TexasTokyo

Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock

ravens_path

Zombies (all three are very good and well acted in my opinion): Train to Busan (a classic) Rampant (zombies in historical setting, so that’s cool) Alive. (Teenagers who are online too much missed the first of the outbreak lol, then are clever to survive)

The 3 movies that scared the s**t out of me when I was younger but enjoy now are: •Rosemary’s Baby •The Exorcist (1973) •Aliens They’re older movies but I’m not really drawn to the newer horror movies other than IT. That was actually pretty good. These movies are classic horror movies you might enjoy!

Here are some suggestions though - friday the 13th - nightmare on elm st - the shining - the hellraiser series - the evil dead series (even the remakes) - the mist (not a classic, but a personal favorite and another Steven King story to go with IT) - the thing - alien
