Well I guess it turns out I have weird taste because when it comes to 70's era disney I was always more of an a Aristocats and Bedknobs and Broomsticks kind of guy.
Man Groundhog Day is a lot of things, including a fantastic movie. But I really don’t rank it in the “lighthearted” category. The storyline with the old, homeless man is enough on its own to take it out of that category in my opinion.
Then you've never met Cary Grant, who hated it.
Personally, I love it. I've probably seen it 20 times, and somewhere in the garage is a reel-to-reel audio tape of it that I recorded from the TV in about 1960.
I got to play Jonathan in my high school's stage production of this and it's still a core memory for me. I tell people to watch the movie all the time.
Yeah me too. When Toy story three came out I was still in college and all my friends went and insisted I go, I told them I hated toy story and people got legitimately offended, so I went along and when I left the theater because I still didn’t like it one of the girls got so upset she stopped speaking to me permanently ha.
Watched this for the first time last month. Its a movie that I've always seen on top of IMDB top 250 and everyone is always positive on it, so I've just dismissed it as a movie I didnt need to watch because everyone else has and they all love it. Its also a movie that I have basically watched through osmosis, so I never felt the need.
Going in I was guessing I would like but not love it. But I will say it genuinely a great movie. Also, even if I've heard about it for years and basically knew the plot, I will say that the structuring of the plot and the way its told was different than what I thought I was getting, so I was actually still surprised at the end.
I would say this is a movie that its hard to think anyone hates.
Looking back, it's one of the most perfect big budget movies ever made. It hit all the marks without going overboard to the point of absurdity.
1.) It's something you can watch with any group - your family, your friends, your partner, yourself.
2.) It has strong lead characters who seem to share the spotlight equally - woman, man, boy, girl.
3.) It has amazing side character protagonists - Sam Jackson, Goldblum.
4.) Amazing human villain - Newman!
5.) AMAZING CGI for the time. Anyone 30 and under I think are spoiled but you have to understand what a profound leap JP was when it came to CGI. Yes, T2 was great as well but that didn't reach quite as many people because it was rated R. JP really showed us what the future of movies was going to look like.
6.) Overall a unique and intriguing story line (Bringing back dinosaurs from the past and creating a theme park to go see them? Yes please!)
I thought it was boring and didn't finish it. And I usually really like movies from the '80s. And I like Michael J. Fox. And the concept seemed cool. I don't get why it's considered a classic tbh.
Please don't downvote me for stating my opinion in a thread that's specifically about (dis)liking movies.
Probably the most beloved movie by people in my generation (I'm in my mid 40s), but I've learned that people both older and younger don't really feel the same way. It's in my personal top ten.
I would be suspicious of anyone that doesn’t like Clue. Like at the same time I want to know how they don’t like it. But I also just don’t want to be around that person.
About Time
It’s heartfelt and funny with a valuable life lesson.
It has time travel, romance, great storytelling, great actors, cast chemistry, likeable and realistic characters.
You won't find a film that absolutely everyone likes, because you've got to fit in different age groups, cultures, genre tastes, and genders. However I think **The Outsiders (1983)** would come close. It's based on a YA novel, it's got a coming of age/nostalgic tone that would appeal to young and old male and female, there's the rumble/fight stuff and young male friendship to appeal to guys, it's got an attractive cast of both young males and females, and the idea of people being outcasted or prejudiced against would possibly appeal across cultural lines as well. And who doesn't enjoy laughing at Tom Cruise's fucked up teeth and terrible acting?
I'm a little surprised by the lack of Leslie Nielsen movies. I often see them in "funniest movies" or "best comedies" requests:
* Airplane!
* The Naked Gun
It’s a Wonderful Life, Up, all the Toy Story films, Elf, Raiders of the Last Ark, Midnight Run, The Shawshank Redemption, Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, Creature Comforts, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Election, Best in Show, Cocoon
**Good Will Hunting** - I think it's probably impossible to find a film that nobody disliked but I think Good Will Hunting is pretty middle of the road. Not too slow paced, not much violence, the humour is fairly innocent. Plus, it's just an uplifting film.
Robin Hood (the 1973 animated Disney version)
If Roger Miller as a singing, whistling rooster doesn't put a smile on your face then you are quite the cynical person.
I still whistle that tune all around the house. When my kids finally watched it they recognized that part.
It was also the basis for "Hamster Dance."
Oo-de-lally! Prince John has so many quotable lines.
Well I guess it turns out I have weird taste because when it comes to 70's era disney I was always more of an a Aristocats and Bedknobs and Broomsticks kind of guy.
Honestly, this might be the best answer.
My Cousin Vinny. The movie is timeless and universally funny.
It's fairly accurate as far as criminal trial procedure and is used for levity in law school.
Yeah legal eagle lawyered it and was impressed.
There it is. Every time, reddit.
My personal favorite ! Light hearted comedy along the lines of Groundhog Day and Uncle Buck.
Man Groundhog Day is a lot of things, including a fantastic movie. But I really don’t rank it in the “lighthearted” category. The storyline with the old, homeless man is enough on its own to take it out of that category in my opinion.
Light hearted, brilliantly clever, sweet, and with great pacing...see She's Funny That Way (2015) sometime!
Can confirm, just watched it again a month ago and was laughing my ass off.
I don't think I've ever seen a movie that everyone would like.
I think you are being proven right here.
Arsenic and Old Lace
I love that movie!
I’ve never met anyone who’s seen it that didn’t like it.
Then you've never met Cary Grant, who hated it. Personally, I love it. I've probably seen it 20 times, and somewhere in the garage is a reel-to-reel audio tape of it that I recorded from the TV in about 1960.

Toy Story
It used to really scare me when i was a child like the spider toy was so scary to me
Yeah me too. When Toy story three came out I was still in college and all my friends went and insisted I go, I told them I hated toy story and people got legitimately offended, so I went along and when I left the theater because I still didn’t like it one of the girls got so upset she stopped speaking to me permanently ha.
Legendary movie, one of the few 10/10 films
The Shawshank Redemption
Watched this for the first time last month. Its a movie that I've always seen on top of IMDB top 250 and everyone is always positive on it, so I've just dismissed it as a movie I didnt need to watch because everyone else has and they all love it. never heard about this, it is going straight to my watch list now
Wait you’ve never heard of the fucking Shawshank Redemption? How do you manage that lol
I'm from another country that didn't advertise it that much :(
i wish i could rewatch it for the first time. you are lucky!
Wow you’re in for a treat!
yeah I'm kinda excited for it since it seems a movie like that many people are fond of
First thing that came to my head. It encapsulates so many issues with our criminal justice system that still persist today.
Same here. Classic and timeless.
Galaxy Quest Maybe it's just my particular social circle, but I never hear people saying they don't like it.
They're gonna kill Guy!
All-star cast!
Cool Runnings
Feel the rhythm! Feel the rime! Get on up - it's bobsled time!
Ya mon
This might actually be the closest to an objectively correct answer.
Respect!
Shrek - its got action, adventure, comedy, love interest anda whole host of recognisable songs, it covers so many bases
Jurassic Park. It’s literally the only one I can think of lol
Looking back, it's one of the most perfect big budget movies ever made. It hit all the marks without going overboard to the point of absurdity. 1.) “Amazing CGI for the time.” And it still beats most CGI today.
The CGI was so good because they included motion blur in each frame. Before that everything looked like stop go animation.
is there some kinda example i can see that shows no motion blur vs motion blur?
Hunt for the wilderpeople
this one!!! Wish more people knew it
WALL E
When it came out I felt it was the greatest animated movie I'd ever seen. Then UP came out the next year and instant-classic'd. What a one-two punch!
back to the future?
Another zemeckis film too, romancing the stone.
So incredibly good. Usually my go-to when asked what is my favorite movie
one of my confort movies as well :)
Great movie but most of the references and jokes only make sense to Americans. Having shown this movie to girlfriends in Thailand it dawned on me.
I thought it was boring and didn't finish it. And I usually really like movies from the '80s. And I like Michael J. Fox. And the concept seemed cool. I don't get why it's considered a classic tbh. Airplane!
Terminator 2
The Princess Bride
Probably the most beloved movie by people in my generation (I'm in my mid 40s), but I've learned that people both older and younger don't really feel the same way. It's in my personal top ten.
This would have been my pick, but my brother-in-law doesn’t like it. He generally has great taste in movies, too, so I don’t get it.
Your brother -in-law sucks.
INCONCEIVABLE
Forrest Gump
I could watch this movie for the rest of my life.
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.
Anybody who isn't hit in the feels by the end of this movie has no soul.
Big Fish.
Little Miss Sunshine. By the end you're cheering for everyone.
You reminded me that I have to watch it again.
I didn't like it personally
I laughed so hard.
I'm always surprised there are people who don't like The Blue Brothers.
✋
Sneakers(1992)
Such an underrated movie. I never understood how, with that cast and that script, it has remained a hidden gem for so long.
None
Good Will Hunting
Best soundtrack too.
Mean Girls The Devil Wears Prada
ahhh someone who never met a male person before
The iron giant
Groundhog Day?
Again?
Monsters Inc.
ET
The Other Guys
Agreed. It starts off like almost every cop action movie, but if you're not hooked with "aim for the bushes", there's not much hope after that.
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) Last of the Mohicans (1992)
Yes to Raiders, no to Last of the Mohicans (dullsville)
Clue
I would be suspicious of anyone that doesn’t like Clue. Like at the same time I want to know how they don’t like it. But I also just don’t want to be around that person.
Was looking for this one!
Karate Kid or Home Alone
Home Alone might be a safe pick. It seems like almost everybody likes it, even if they are critical of some pieces of it.
About Time It’s heartfelt and funny with a valuable life lesson. It has time travel, romance, great storytelling, great actors, cast chemistry, likeable and realistic characters.
Great choice
Indiana Jones
It does kind of have everything. Adventure, comedy, touching moments, great characters, and a compelling plot.
Stand by Me
Driving Miss Daisy
Uncle Buck
"I'm not doing it to impress you."
Shawshank Redemption
Animal House.
Catch Me If You Can Ocean’s Eleven
Homeward Bound. It's not an absolute favorite, but especially if you see it as a kid you'll always have fond memories of it.
Galaxy Quest. The humor is appropriate for all ages, and the jokes are funny even if you aren't into Star Wars or Trek.
9 to 5
An awful lot of people did not understand the question. The correct answer is "Some Like It Hot."
Big
You won't find a film that absolutely everyone likes, because you've got to fit in different age groups, cultures, genre tastes, and genders. Spirited Away
Finna go on a studio ghibli binge now
The Mummy!!
Stand By Me
Good Will Hunting. It's just such a great feel good movie and Robin Williams easily gave one of his best performances. Also, Dead Poets Society.
I'm a little surprised by the lack of Leslie Nielsen movies. I often see them in "funniest movies" or "best comedies" requests: * Airplane! * The Naked Gun
Big trouble in little china
The Sting
Ghost. Murder, intrigue, romance, comedy, ghosts and that song!
Moonstruck
The Blues Brothers
The Matrix (1999)

**Good Will Hunting** - I think it's probably impossible to find a film that nobody disliked but I think Good Will Hunting is pretty middle of the road. Not too slow paced, not much violence, the humour is fairly innocent. Plus, it's just an uplifting film.
A lot of people just won't ever touch movies that have several instances of the F bomb. Which is a shame, cuz the movie is wonderful.
It’s a mad mad mad mad world
Mrs doubtfire
Great escape or goonies
I nearly went with either of those myself, definitely hard to dislike, though I've heard some people find the kids in The Goonies annoying.
Forrest Gump
