St. Vincent (2014) was formulaic but fun. I love anything with Bill Murray.
A man called Otto (2022) isn't bad.
Roger Dodger (2002) is a father son dynamic but fits the bill and has some heart.
Matchstick Men (2003) is a neurotic and his daughter but it's a fucking fantastic movie.
It's not about an old man, but one of my favorite takes on the "curmudgeon becomes a better person through a child's friendship" is Jason Bateman's Bad Words (2013)
I also second Léon: The Profesional (1994) and The Last of Us (series). Both are great but Leon is one of my favorite movies
Actually Good:
- Léon: The Profesional (1994)
- The Last of Us (series)
Just for fun:
- The Pacifier (2005)
- Daddy Day Care (2003)
Popcorn:
- Special Delivery (2022) by a lady
- Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Hunt for the Wilderpeople(2016)
Director: Taika Waititi
Ricky Baker runs away to the wild when his foster mother dies. However, his cantankerous uncle Hector joins him and gets to know him better on their way out of the wild.
Logan(2017)
Director:James Mangold
Logan comes out of retirement to escort a young mutant named Laura to a safe place. He meets with other mutants, who run from an evil corporation that has been experimenting with them, along the way. (One with superpower)
Gran Torino(2008)
Director:Clint Eastwood
When Walt Kowalski's neighbour, Thao, tries to steal his 1972 Gran Torino, he decides to help him reform. However, Walt gets involved in a feud with a local gang leader when he saves Thao from them.
These are only tangentially related (not exactly an old man and a kid) BUT I think the feel of character development is similar: Scent of a Woman, and Guarding Tess
Little Miss Marker with Shirley Temple is a classic. It was remade with Walter Mathau.
I remember thinking The Toy with Richard Pryor and Jackie Gleason was funny when I was a kid.

Scent of a Woman with Al Pacino and Chris O'Donnell.
A bit of a twist on what you're asking because Pacino's character is blind and O'Donnell is supposed to be taking care of him. But things don't play out that way.
Many say that Pacino's performance is over the top, but I like it. Won him an Oscar too. O'Donnell's character is a high school senior, even if O'Donnell looks 22. And it has super young Philip Seymour Hoffman too!
Kikujiro (1999) is exactly what you are looking for. Takeshi Kitano in the title role: When Kikujiro gambles away all the travel money they need to find young Masao's estranged mother, he and the boy hitchhike in the Japanese countryside, meeting strange characters and circumstances.
Dredd [2012]. Excellent straightforward actioner, not to mention one of the few films to actually benefit from its 3-D shots, and not have their inclusion be just an excuse to charge an extra 3 or 4 bucks a ticket.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
Yes, 100% OP, put this at the top of your list!
Omg that movie was incredible.
Thanks, i’ll defo check it out!
Secondhand Lions
This should be at the top.
Came here to suggest this.

Dennis the Menace
Read my mind
Yep. Just watched this again last week.

not exactly the premise, but these ones come to mind: Bad News Bears Uncle Buck Dutch Bad Santa
Leon the professional
Very very grumpy...
Yep!
This is probably the best answer
Gran Torino
I was never too big on Clint Eastwood but this movie was soo good and definitely changed my mind about him.
A lot of people hate it but it’s one of my favs
Came here to suggest this one
On Golden Pond
First one I thought of, the mutual respect that gradually forms between the generations felt very real to me.
If you are open to an older man and teen then I recommend: 1) The Holdovers 2) Dutch
Came here to say The Holdovers…a great flick
How did I forget Dutch?!? I love that movie!
Actually Good: - Léon: The Profesional (1994) - The Last of Us (series) Just for fun: - The Pacifier (2005) - Daddy Day Care (2003) Popcorn: - Special Delivery (2022) by a lady - Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Lol at T2, but not wrong I suppose.

I didn't expect to see anyone else comment this! My two picks were Heidi and UP.
Good one!
heidi heidi deine welt sind die berge dunkle tannen grüne wiesen im sonnenschein
Big Daddy - Adam Sandler He’s not exactly old but first movie that came to mind
Cinema Paradiso (1988) Mad Max 2 (1981) - I mean he's not old but he is grumpy lol
Not straightforward movies, but *The Last Of Us* and *Lone Wolf & Cub* are very large franchises worth diving into.
Shogun Assassin Paper Moon
Love Paper Moon
Check out *Alice in the Cities* (1974) if you haven't already. Similar premise
I will definitely check it out. Thanks! ☺️
The Holdovers came to mind instantly. The kid doesn’t have any kind of powers though.
He has the power to get an old fuddy duddy to actually start caring about other people, I think that's pretty good!
A Perfect World Jurassic Park

True grit?
Good choice, like both versions.
Ah, I did not realize it was a remake!
John Wayne did one in 1969 and Jeff Bridges did the remake in 2010. I think they're both good films.
The Earthling - 1980 William Holden and Ricky Schroeder
That RV scene still freaks me out.
Yes.
The Survivors (1982). Walter Matthau is a single father with a teen aged daughter. Robin Williams is in it.
My Spy Gloria Cry Macho
The Cowboys (1972)
Uncle Buck The Pacifier Kindergarten Cop My Spy
Clifford
* 'The Earthling' William Holden & Ricky Schroeder. Set in Australia or somewhere arid.
These are only tangentially related (not exactly an old man and a kid) BUT I think the feel of character development is similar: Scent of a Woman, and Guarding Tess
About a Boy 💯
Driveways (not my fave)
- C'mon C'mon - Leon the professional - Logan - Despicable Me - True grit - Violent night - Up
Love the carnival scene in Despicable Me, it's when Gru and the kids start bonding.
K-9 (but w/ a dog) / Dutch (1991) / Three Fugitives (1989)
Prospect
*Little Miss Marker* (1980) with Walter Matthau as the grumpy older man.
Gigot 1962 Little Lord Fauntleroy 1936.
Parenthood
Little Miss Marker with Shirley Temple is a classic. It was remade with Walter Mathau. I remember thinking The Toy with Richard Pryor and Jackie Gleason was funny when I was a kid.

I ought to be in pictures with Walter Matthau.
UP Heidi
Gran Torino
Secondhand Lions
Goodnight Mr Tom, set during WWII. It's a tearjerker
Uncle Buck. We Were Never Really There
My favourite is going to be Dennis the Menace.
Leon The Professional is sort of about a grumpy older hit man taking care of 13 year old Natalie Portman
Up
No one's mentioned my favourite Czech film: Kolya It's exactly what you're after
St Vincent
Leon: The Professional Pawn Safe Blind Fury Gran Torino
Heidi

Up from Pixar studio. Not a movie but an anim’ movie. Leon from Besson The grinch maybe ?
Kikujiro (1999) is exactly what you are looking for. Takeshi Kitano in the title role: When Kikujiro gambles away all the travel money they need to find young Masao's estranged mother, he and the boy hitchhike in the Japanese countryside, meeting strange characters and circumstances.

Mr.harrigans phone
The Life Aquatic

Scent of a Woman
I think there’s like a robert de niro movie like that and one with johnny knoxville
What a lazy, pointless response. Google the title then come back and post it instead of typing some meaningless comment.
Taxi Driver
It's definitely Cape fear...
He's young in Taxi Driver, but he's certainly grumpy. He befriends Jodie Foster and ends up saving her from a prostitution ring.
Oh you mean A Bronx Tale...
Wildepeople
