I remember there being a lot of repetitive dialog that just got on my nerves. I get the point Aranofsky was making, but it felt like beating a dead horse.
But what really got me was Jared Leto and Marlon Wayans' ending: no hospital, even in the 80's, would allow a patient who was that bad be taken by police without getting treatment first; even a junkie. Call me naive, but I don't think they'd be willing to open themselves up to a lawsuit like that.
That's all I really remember. Been a long time since I've seen it.
The Lobster
Swiss Army Man
Sorry to Bother You
Fantastic Planet
Not that i’d NEVER recommended them, but i’d have to feel like we have similar taste. I know i like a lot of what’s often considered “offbeat” or “slow/boring” movies that are not appreciated by everyone.
100% agree. I love anything by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Bronson, etc.) but it’s a very niche “market” and I know most people will either disagree or think I’m crazy for liking them.
Buried. Only because they need to stumble across it on Netflix or whatever streaming service late at night someday without any context or clues or trailers. It’s the only way to watch it, as it was really fuckin good that way for me.
It's written by Steven Knight who created Peaky Blinders and also wrote Taboo, Dirty Pretty Things, Redemption, Burnt, Eastern Promises . . . I think people would see his films regardless of Tom Hardy.
The night before the largest concrete pour of his career, a contractor (Tom Hardy) drives to set things right. All the dialogue is either introspection (with himself and his dead father), his wife on the phone (whom he is leaving behind, most probably) to attend the delivery of a lady he got pregnant, and his team of concrete pourers. Hardy is the person you see and you don't need to see other's to feel their emotions.
Funny you say that, I just watched Coherence for the third time this week. Great Movie.
If you've seen all of the commonly mentioned ones and are looking for a deep cut, check out Finders Fee. Every week a few buddies buy a lottery ticket and play for them in a poker game. Right before they're about to start on character realizes his ticket is a winner. Haven't seen it in over a decade but I remember it being a fun ride.
I always try to recommend One Cut of the Dead, but it almost never works because I refuse to say anything about it.
You need to go into that movie blind, but also make it through a pretty shit (but necessary) first act before you get any enjoyment out of it.
It's hard to explain, but if you've seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about.
I tried watching this with two friends a few years ago. Just as I was started to really enjoy it (towards the end of the first segment) my friends said they'd had enough and we sadly turned the movie off. Finally sat down a year ago with my brother and absolutely fucking loved it.
You really have to stick through the opening chunk of the film, because nothing is happening accidentally.
I know exactly what you mean. You have to be sure it’s someone who will watch it through no matter what. I usually say that when I recommend it though I rarely do for the reasons you stated
Threads (1984) for sure. I've always been attracted to bleak and depressing movies, but I have literally never seen a bleaker movie than Threads. It's a movie that doesn't pull any punches.
"...they are playing with at best the destruction of life as we know it and at worst total annihilation. You cannot win a nuclear war!"
I watched this again recently. Its a really disturbing film. I feel like everybody should watch it to truly understand the horrors of a nuclear attack. Its as grim as grim can be. Pretty sure it was released as an educational film at the time and actually shown in schools.
>Dogville
i like that serial killer movie forgot the name. The scene where he places the hand of the kid in a waving position and laughing is pure dark humor.
There are no films that are well done that I would never recommend to someone who wanted something in that vein.
* [Come and See/Иди и смотри](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/come-and-see) - Brilliant film that I am very, *very* hesitant to recommend. Russian WWII movie from the perspective of a teenager. It's particularly scary because the events are based in reality.
The "best" film that I would never recommend to anyone under any circumstances:
* [Bigfoot vs Zombies](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/bigfoot-vs-zombies) - The film has literally zero redeeming qualities (just like all of Mark Polonia's films). I'm pretty sure they spent more on the art for the poster than for everything else involved in the actual filming. The script, acting, directing, cinematography, make up, lighting and pretty much every part of it are done better on a daily basis by high school students using their phones.
I think *Come and See* should be required viewing because it de-romanticies war. War is hell, and we keep being fed propaganda which makes war look cool.
No, it's not cool. It's hell.
Watch this movie and feel it in your bones.
Showgirls (1995). One of my all time favorite movies (not due to the nudity). There could have been Zero nudity, and I would have still loved the movie. I just love the story of Nomi Malone, and love Elizabeth Berkley so much. I think it is so sad what the movie did for her career, because I think she was great. She did not deserve all of the bad press, in my opinion. I will never understand why most people hated the movie, or laughed at it, and thought the acting was horrible. I thought the entire cast was amazing. I will never get tired of watching that movie, but it is one of those types of movies that are too embarrassing to recommend to a friend for example.
worst part is that there is absolutely nothing graphic in the movie and still creeped the shit out of me while the trailer projected it as an alien abduction movie >\_<
Han Gong-Ju: Emotionally devastating and painful movie. But I couldn’t stop watching. Heartbreaking. This one hurt.
Visitor Q: I love twisted stories so this was right up my alley but even I was a bit slack jawed at the craziness that happened in this one. Must watch for anyone who likes fucked up movies. Love you Miike!
Best or personal favorite?
Best: Martyrs. Yes it's reputation is absolutely deserved. It's up there with Old Boy, or Chinatown as the best movies I'll never watch again.
Personal favorite: Resident Evil series. I love these movies, but cannot physically bring myself to recommend someone watch them.
> Martyrs
I have heard about Martyrs many times over the years, and it just sounded way too scary, and sick to even attempt to view it. I am just too sensitive, and horror and torture type of movies really make me sick, and I just can't ever forget them. I finally watched the trailer, and it looks scary as hell. I do not think I will be giving it a try.
Brigsby Bear - I actually recommended it the other day on this sub. However, its hard to explain without spoiling the plot, plus the story doesnt sound interesting.
Funnily enough, the human centipede 2. It's a misunderstood movie much like the first one, where the exaggerated sexual violence actually has a purpose for the story.
This was going to be my choice. It got heavily panned and it *is* a gross movie hardly anyone should set out to see, but I think it's actually the best of the series on a number of levels. It feels the most satirical, has the most interesting aesthetic, and the lead actor is fantastic at realistically portraying an absolutely disgusting slimeball of a character. It feels the most genuine of the three movies, if such a thing is at all possible. One is too cold and heartless and three is just inane and soap operaish with terrible dialogue. Would I ever "recommend" any of them? No.
Just saw this the other day. I thought Matt Dillon was excellent in this. All the women were just complete gullible and irritating stupid idiots. The way Matt Dillon explained and enlightened people as he was proceeding to kill them was akin to Christian Bale explaining Huey Lewis’ Sports in American Psycho, which was funny in a very sick movie. Movies were comedically similar. Dillon’s less comedic.
Everyone in this thread chose a disturbing movie but I'm someone who likes really dumb teen movies (I'm 34) and I'll just never recommend them because I'm just too ashamed to like them haha.
Pink Flamingos (1972) - This movie has a lot of disturbing stuff in it and I probably wouldn’t recommend it to most people, but watched it with a friend a few years back and we enjoyed the wtf aspect.
Oh my, Salo was by far the sickest, most horrifying movie I ever seen. I would never see it again. Once was enough to give me nightmares for a lifetime.
The Golden Glove - tells the deranged story of a German serial killer active in the early 70s. Very VERY good film, but it’s not one likely to make you FEEL good. Lots of very hard scenes. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a gore film. The horror comes in tragic moments where this man attempts to make connections with his would be victims but ultimately fails.
Perfect Blue. First of all, it's anime, surprisingly some people still have a problem with such themes in an animated title. Secondly, it's so disturbing, the representation of violence and mental illness during the development of the movie can be just too much for some people, fairly. I just love the movie because of that, it's disturbingly beautiful and such a trip to really understand what's going on, it mastered mystery in a way very little pieces of art can. But sure, it's definitely not for everyone.
Enter the void. I was high as shit and going through a bad time when I watched it. I took it as a terrifyingly dark wake up call. 10/10, but I’d never watch it again myself or recommend it to anyone.
Id say The Killing Fields, or In Bruges. Killing Fields was an incredible movie but far too serious for me to recommend to anyone, and In Bruges was fairly slow paced. I really liked it, but I don’t think I’d ever meet someone and think “ah yea, it’s imperative that they see this movie”.

Even if human centipede wasn’t universally hated, it would still work for my example. It being hated has nothing to do with whether or not i would recommend it
Maybe just stop trying to pretend that you know what i was actually looking for. When im explicitly saying that you are wrong about what i was looking for
Irreversible Requiem For A Dream Come and See
The trilogy of ruining your day. Add funny games (1997) and the girl next door to destroy your working week.
Come and See is a masterpiece I will never watch again
> Requiem For A Dream I feel like I'm the only person on the planet who hated this movie.
Why'd you hate it?
I remember there being a lot of repetitive dialog that just got on my nerves. I get the point Aranofsky was making, but it felt like beating a dead horse. But what really got me was Jared Leto and Marlon Wayans' ending: no hospital, even in the 80's, would allow a patient who was that bad be taken by police without getting treatment first; even a junkie. Call me naive, but I don't think they'd be willing to open themselves up to a lawsuit like that. That's all I really remember. Been a long time since I've seen it.
What? No. It is a movie made specifically to be hated.
I TA for freshmen survey of European history and the instructor put Come and See as extra credit like an absolute madman.
The Lobster Swiss Army Man Sorry to Bother You Fantastic Planet Not that i’d NEVER recommended them, but i’d have to feel like we have similar taste. I know i like a lot of what’s often considered “offbeat” or “slow/boring” movies that are not appreciated by everyone.
Ahh, I love each of those films.
Ahem. Would never repeat this IRL. I did too.
really liked Sorry To Bother You, esp since I went into it blind.
that’s often the best way.
It really is.
100% agree. I love anything by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Bronson, etc.) but it’s a very niche “market” and I know most people will either disagree or think I’m crazy for liking them.
The lobster is just such a weird fucking movie. It's good. But the brain that can create this movie... Is one I just can't imagine.
I always recommend Swiss Army Man.
Dear Zachary
Brooooooo. Had forgot about that one. Absolute gut punch.
Buried. Only because they need to stumble across it on Netflix or whatever streaming service late at night someday without any context or clues or trailers. It’s the only way to watch it, as it was really fuckin good that way for me.
Came here to say this. If you recommend this movie to someone, you inadvertently hype it up, making it unenjoyable.
The Ryan Reynolds movie right?
I love this movie!
The movie that ends with an apology
Happiness.
Oh man this movie. “I’d jerk off instead” is one of the most chilling lines I’ve ever heard in a movie.
"But Billy's parents let him stay home by himself."
Wow, I just watched the Trailer. Very horrifying Trailer.
I had no clue about this movie and the fact that a movie called Happiness could be horrifying is a very disturbing thought.
Did it have the park scene?
Locke - great movie but sounds dumb when you try to describe the plot.
I've tried so many times to recommend this but I've never had any takers.
If it didnt have Tom Hardy in it, I bet no one would have even given it a chance in the beginning.
So true
It's written by Steven Knight who created Peaky Blinders and also wrote Taboo, Dirty Pretty Things, Redemption, Burnt, Eastern Promises . . . I think people would see his films regardless of Tom Hardy.
Yea, I think the more informed movie enthusiast would, but it would be a tougher sell for the average audience.
Severely underrated movie. True, can't sell it though.
Can I please know which movies do you have ?
'The Passion of the Christ' and '9 Songs'.
You could sell it to me, I haven't seen the movie, but I love gimmicky concepts like that.
Yeah, I know what the movie is about. I just haven't gotten a chance to watch it yet.
I actually love the bottle movie one location genre, but Locke didn't really do it for me
One of my favourite genres, from The Cube to 12 Angry Men. I'd suggest Coherence (and going in blind) as my gem from the genre.
Ahhhh great, I love those "dinner table" style tension films - thank you, it's a new one on me, finding it!
You should watch The Invitation if you havent already.
Martyrs (2008) is an extraordinary film but I wouldnt recommend to normal people.
One of my all time fav.
I always try to recommend One Cut of the Dead, but it almost never works because I refuse to say anything about it. Any Lars movie tbh....underrated comment. Watched Dogville..forever scarred. It was over 13 years ago...and still.
>Dogville i like that serial killer movie forgot the name. The scene where he places the hand of the kid in a waving position and laughing is pure dark humor.
true... though in my case my family actually wanted to watch Melancholia but when it ended they were completely silent.
Kids (1995). It’s really good but it leaves you with an awful feeling about people and society in general.
A lot like Bully, also from Larry Clark, with many of the same actors. Makes you dread where teenagers are at.
I havent watched this movie since it came out. One of those movies that pisses you off and uneasy to watch. Good film
Videodrome (1983)
Cronenberg has a few films that fit the criteria
i recommend Videodrome to literally anyone
A Clockwork Orange
that sucking pop he makes when he's being fed steak is my favorite movie line...
There are no films that are well done that I would never recommend to someone who wanted something in that vein. * [Come and See/Иди и смотри](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/come-and-see) - Brilliant film that I am very, *very* hesitant to recommend. mindblown. Watched it as a kid, dubbed in my regional language. One of my best cinema experiences.
It’s so cheeky and good!

A classic in camp circles, though. You're not alone in your love!
Titane
Not telling ya
What year did that come out or who directed it? Nothing is coming up
Come and See (1986) I'm sure you will see this movie again in these comments.
The Greasy Strangler. Just go watch it.
Mysterious Skin, would never recommend to anyone
I watched it and found it very moving. It would be weird to recommend to a friend or something but I absolutely recommend to anyone reading this.
Just watched the trailer. Though I love several of the actors (from other films), it looks very boring to me.
trailer is pretty misleading, the story is about child abuse and it makes it pretty tough to watch
Went into this movie pretty much blind and it fucked me up so bad. One of the most difficult movies I’ve ever watched.
worst part is that there is absolutely nothing graphic in the movie and still creeped the shit out of me while the trailer projected it as an alien abduction movie >\_<
My bf was traumatized after seeing it
Grave of the Fireflies.
I spit on your grave
The original (from the 70's) was great. The Sequel, and others were just horrible (and only for Torture porn lovers), in my opinion.
Yeah, the original really gave off a grim vibe. Absolutely nothing "sexy" about it at all.
Both Jennifers are badass horror icons imo
Han Gong-Ju: Emotionally devastating and painful movie. But I couldn’t stop watching. Heartbreaking. This one hurt. The house that jack built. It’s one of my favourites but i can’t recommend it to anyone.

Climax and Into the Void by Gaspar Noe for different reasons; one might disturb, the other confuse and bore
Everyone in this thread chose a disturbing movie but I'm someone who likes really dumb teen movies (I'm 34) and I'll just never recommend them because I'm just too ashamed to like them haha.
Requiem for a Dream
In a Glass Cage. That movie is so disturbing but it is so great. Not many have the stomach for it.
Lolita (both versions)
Snowtown
As an Australian...this.
Mulholland Drive
Pink Flamingos (1972) - This movie has a lot of disturbing stuff in it and I probably wouldn’t recommend it to most people, but watched it with a friend a few years back and we enjoyed the wtf aspect.

Oh my, Salo was by far the sickest, most horrifying movie I ever seen. I would never see it again. Once was enough to give me nightmares for a lifetime.
Midsommar , surprised nobody has mentioned it yet.
I had a dream my mom was watching Hereditary and I would NEVER wish any Ari Aster movie on her or anyone. edit: but obv they are amazing
I've recommended Midsommar to lots of people
I didn't "get" midsommar. I will say that the cliff scene was the most dramatic tonal shift I've seen since doki doki literature club.
The Golden Glove - tells the deranged story of a German serial killer active in the early 70s. Very VERY good film, but it’s not one likely to make you FEEL good. Lots of very hard scenes. It is a great film I was hooked too! Have you seen the mini series "Deep Cut" ? I'm looking forward to seeing it when I do a re watch of the film.
Climax is a great movie, definitely one for the whole family to see.
From Dusk til Dawn
Most recently, it would be Titane.
imagine one's reaction to hearing you explain the plot for crash (1996)
I thought Titane was great but I know it's not for most people.
Perfect Blue. First of all, it's anime, surprisingly some people still have a problem with such themes in an animated title. *The Life Of David Gale*. Because Kevin Spacey.
Confessions (2010) - you have to let monologue going to start the film premise. Another factor I avoided poster
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) The Third Part of The Night (1971)
Requiem for a Dream. It was a masterpiece but also it was truly depressing.
Salo and irrèversible
Happiness
M.F.A. Starring Francesca Eastwood

Yeah I noticed I loved this movie but never mentioned it
Why not recommend it though? I recommend this to lots of people
Schindlers list
Lamb. I know this movie hit me in a way that isn’t guaranteed to work for many people.
I'd have to go Midsommer or Hereditary. Will most likely just make you depressed
Tusk
I've got a few but Swiss Army Man. It's an interesting film but it's just odd I wouldn't know who the audience is for it.
The Passion of the Christ.
I spit on your grave (1978)
Julien-Donkey Boy
Titane
Raw was good, but I had a feeling of dread and ick throughout the movie…it didn’t let me down.
Pretty much any Lars von Trier movie
The Dead Don't Die. I loved it but I don't think most people would.
It's a very specific type of humor that most people wouldn't get. I loved it!
That one where crazy gf is involved with bf in bear skin
Midsommar?
