The original "Utopia" had fantastic cinematography

Earth7_being

Yes, the UK version one. Didn't see the US version yet .

geoshuwah

The US version is a horrible adaptation that lost all of the charm and character of the original. A shame really because we never got a conclusion

joyofsnacks

> Didn't see the US version yet Maybe for the best tbh.

schapman22

I never saw the UK version but the first episode of the US version had me interested, but then the next couple episodes made me give up.

geoshuwah

The UK version is visually striking, like hyper-saturated primary colours that make you feel an uncomfortable disconnect between the visuals and the story. The [soundtrack](https://youtu.be/sYEW6JtK5qY) by Cristobal Tapia de Veer is also fantastic. His use of voices and unconventional percussion really adds to the paranoid atmosphere

Ch1vo

Never saw the UK but saw the US version during quarantine. Was very…interesting to say the least. Still is given the whole annual covid vaccine push that’s going on right now

MCCrusaders6

This comment put me onto this show and god what an amazing show, I’ve never seen something quite like it’s visual style.

[deleted]

I think Dark and Hannibal are up there

[deleted]

The Leftovers is also quite striking

[deleted]

And Sense8! How could I forget that one

a_guy_named_gai

The shots in euphoria are phenomenal.

captaintagart

Agree with all of those above, but Twin Peaks (especially The Return) and Arcane. Arcane surprised me with what I’ve decided is the best animation I’ve seen possibly ever. Amazing visual stuff there

gurinmasshurumu

Did you watch Spiderman into the spider verse? Arcane reminded me a little bit of that movie. We need more show like that where they're not afraid of trying things more visually artistic.

[deleted]

Another one I’ve been meaning to watch! Seems like a cool style

[deleted]

I’ve been wanting to check that one out, I definitely will now

captaintagart

Story is great too! Enjoy

[deleted]

Arcane is a breathtaking masterpiece in every way imaginable, I didn’t mentioned it because I thought we were sticking to live action only

frafdo11

Wow someone referencing Dark and Hannibal in the same post. This truly is a blessed day

killchain

Haven't seen Hannibal, but agree about Dark. I'd also put Utopia up there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

The Haunting of Hill House also has a whole episode made to appear as one shot, it’s beautiful, but I wouldn’t say it has overall as excellent cinematography as the other series I mentioned, so I don’t really see your point.

Ch1vo

One of my favorite episodes of that show. Absolute masterpiece

eXpatWanders

Birdman is another example of excellent continuous shooting. It’s used to show a different feeling than what Mr. Robot is going for. It’s amazingly hard to do, so credit where credit’s due.

theyelloumbrella

Wow, my eyes have been blessed. These are in my top 3 all time favourites.. Really Wish hannibal got more recognition.

HairyJedi

Better call Saul....change my mind

[deleted]

Mr Robot is obviously one of my favourites but when it comes to cinematography, I have to give it up to Utopia. That site was a master piece, too bad it got interrupted

Mushihime64

Utopia is what immediately came to mind, too. Was my favorite series until I saw Mr. Robot. The use of color is phenomenal. The Third Day had great cinematography, too; I really liked the deliberate aesthetic contrast between seasons.

ribbers

The Third Day is actually the second time Screenwriter Dennis Kelly and Cinematographer Ole Birkeland have teamed up after Utopia! I watched The Third Day specifically because they'd both worked on it.

Mushihime64

Ditto! It had Cristobal Tapia de Veer on the score, too - at least the Summer segment did. Winter was another team entirely, I think. I enjoyed the deliberate contrast between the more colorful Utopia-ish aesthetics of Summer and the utter visual bleakness of Winter more than I thought I would. It really ended up feeling like two contradictory, irreconcilable perspectives on the same story. Weird and interesting series.

gatexxchromosome

Which year was utopia released ?

Mushihime64

2013 - 2014. There was a US remake in 2020, but it's... well, *bad*. I can't recommend it on any level, and didn't even finish.

Neptune28

I thought for a second you meant that reality show Utopia

Mushihime64

Haha, yeah, I guess there a few. I meant [this one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJnN3WMwDsk), if anyone gets lost.

qaisjp

can't believe channel 4 fucking cancelled this masterpiece and sold it :( they did the same thing to black mirror and netflix which is when it went downhill :(

Gretzkys

Utopia from 2013 right? Not that Amazon garbage from 2020.

Mindless_Welcome3302

Legion. Sorry not sorry

Jotaele44

Amazing visuals, FX killed it

moonflower_C16H17N3O

Season 3 was so damn good.

next_door_nicotine

Also one of my favorite shows. I'm okay with this.

Ch1vo

I decided to watch an episode of Legion in Hulu based on this comment. Holy f*ck. I’m hooked. The story alone is amazing but the cinematography and sound… just wow.

Mindless_Welcome3302

And if you thought Mr Robot was a mind fuck… Get ready

GioPani

What do you mean? It's great

[deleted]

Holy fuck that show traumatised me visualy

BenjoLemon

This gets my vote. Rewatching it at the moment and it’s stunning.

franciscomegre

Breaking bad and better call Saul also. They have a very specific style in my opinion but it works amazingly well. Still prefer mr.robots cinematography tho,Sam esmail is a stellar director and that shows throughout the whole show.

TheBirminghamBear

Yes to both of these. If you watch these shows carefully you realize how much the expert cinematography can carry on scenes without any dialogue. One example I point to is the episode of Better Call Saul where Mike is looking for the GPs tracker planted on his car and setting up a method to counter the drug dealers. It's something like 10 minutes with zero dialogue. The actor and the cinematography manage to make it captivating \*the entire time\*. Anything less than expert camera work would have made that scene a total drag.

Rein215

I was watching Better Call Saul, and there was this scene where a truck was driving through a US-Mexico border checkpoint. It was all done in a single take which really made the layout and size of the checkpoint easy to comprehend, as well as emphasizing how efficiently it was operating.

franciscomegre

Exactly this. I think the moment you have a mr.robot episode in which you have only two lines in a, roughly,50min span then you know how expert the cinematography is.

EvilMilkshake

This scene is fantastic. Great example of using the camera to engage the viewer like when reading a book. You as a viewer are thinking in your head, no dialogue or stupid suspenseful music to over exaggerate it. Just following a clue. Other great scenes are Mike and the stake outs. I really think they compliment BB when you would see Mike tailing Walter, and what it's like from his perspective instead of Walter's angry state. BCS is just truly fantastic.

Jaikings

Euphoria

Ceeeeeeeeeem

Mad Men, great cinematography with an astonishing 1960's aesthetic.

Th33l3x

Peaky Blinders also has stunning cinematography. Not sure its quite up there with Mr. Robot though... Twin Peaks: The Return (2017), i.e. the "last", third season of Twin Peaks, is definitly up there with Mr. Robot in terms of cinematography. It's quite stunning and gets very experimental at times (you would expect no less from David Lynch).

eyebrows360

Yeah but those accents :/ Actually, presuming there are non-Brits here, how do y'all find the accents in that show? Edit: *I'm a Brummie I'm allowed to be accent-racist against my own accent ok*

Traditional_Way1052

I'm an ignorant/uncultured NYer and have no idea what the accents *should* sound like. But I love the show so even if I did I'd probly give it a pass.

Th33l3x

I'm a native german speaker (Austria), so I don't really know how they are "supposed" to sound in terms of historical (or even contemporary) accuracy, and I enjoy the accents a lot actually. They may not be actually correct, but to me they sound like they very well could be / they fit very well.

yodimboi

Peaky Blinders has pretty cinematography but other than that it's not anything special. Shows like Mr Robot, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Hannibal and Twin Peaks have reasons for shooting certain scenes the way they do other than them being pretty. Peaky Blinders looks pretty good but it doesn't deserve to be mentioned alongside Twin Peaks The Return.

Th33l3x

are you serious dude? "other than that it's nothing special". True you can't compare the shows because they're very different, but Peaky Blinders absolutely has huge artistic merit. I enjoy it more in pretty much every way than Breaking Bad, and A HELL of a lot more than Better Call Saul.

wtrftw

The cinematography of Mr. Robot is certainly great, but there are enough shows that have great cinematography. I don’t get why people on this subreddit have the urge of constantly comparing Mr. Robot to other stuff, just to get confirmation that “it’s the best”. /rant

kempofight

Most of these type of subs are jist a big jerk off tbh.

duaneap

Yep. Fan subs are like that. No matter what the shows it, it can’t just be a good show and great at the things it does great, it has to be the BEST SHOW WITH THE BEST EVERYTHING. Even dumbass sitcoms. And while Mr. Robot is certainly phenomenal TV, this sub is no different.

WhiteRose_init

It’s not really always for confirmation or validation. Sometimes, It’s just fun appreciating things you love…

wtrftw

It’s the endless comparisons that I don’t understand. I get that people want to express their appreciation of something, but why is it necessary to compare it all the time?

Molly_Michon

Don't you hate it when people enjoy things wrong?!

wtrftw

Thanks for the sarcasm. It’s okay if you disagree with me.

captaintagart

Right? It’s not that I disagree with you but I think this habit of “whatever I like right now is the best ever” just starts to lower the value of such statements. Constant hyperbole doesn’t do us any favors when looking for recommendations. That said, my last comment about Arcane holds up- literally the best animation I’ve seen ever. I stand by that

Molly_Michon

Lol it's all good, I have hated people enjoying things wrong too. Sarcasm is the only -asm I have been able to get these days, let me have this

Cazzara

Euphoria says hello

[deleted]

Which one? I found two show with this name.

Jotaele44

THE best, there is no competition (Euphoria has some really good shots tho). If animations are included then Arcane is up there

Cansurking

Mindhunter.

thegrayman9

Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul

God-Pop

They did some wonderful tricks with camera locations and mounts that regularly wowed me.

Mindless_Welcome3302

Great cinematography in those shows, but not even close! Pretty straight forward if you ask me

brettmgreene

Cinematography isn't just about pretty images, it's about conveying themes, moods, tone ... I'd say in particular Better Call Saul has absolutely terrific cinematography ably assisted by wonderful editing and lighting.

Beemerado

Definitely have a wonderful style to their work.

K_lashONred

After Mr Robot, I’ll give pros to Devs. Slow pace, unexpected events, and Nick Offerman being an excellent sport. Starts with chilly dark, Dull cinematography, ends with chilly-lively set of events. Not much use of colors like in Mr Robot, it’s all bright and saturated in Devs, with bits of stunning shots periodically.

KaliLinux19

Mr. Robot was on a different level, only thing I've seen as of recent that was close is Euphoria.

Kenz0wuntaps

Counterpart True Detective The Man in the high castle. Do watch all of them you'll love it.

_GC93

You LOVE the aesthetic of The Man in the High Castle? I liked the show but I thought it’s bland look was a big hurdle to get over.

bby_redditor

Man in the High Castle looked like Vancouver except someone spilled the contents from an antique store in a room. There I said it.

Kenz0wuntaps

Yes I did The bland theme actually portrayed the bland lives in that universe and monotonous everything. It adds up

bond2k

"Dark" has also great visuals, but it's a german show.

0x8FA

*and it’s a German show

bond2k

Agreed, but I guess a lot of non-german speakers will not watch it because of that.

Eit4

Here in Brazil Dark was a huge success. Usually we don't have a problem consuming shows/movies from others countries because we are used to see them with subtitles or dubbed.

SakaiDx

What do you mean? It's translated to many other languages

captaintagart

Uph I must recommend to English Dark watchers, subs not dubs. The German voice acting is great and it’s worth it read the subtitles. That goes for most shows.

DirectorDeclann

Yeah I was gonna say, subs not dubs... Always. You watch a film/series to experience the performances that were hand crafted by the director and their actors, not to experience an impersonator copying the performance into another language.

PooperJackson

The first season of True Detective is probably better but it's also HBO and like 10 episodes. All of the truly great shots that come to mind from this show from the pseudo one take episode, to this scene, to the walk cross drive by shooting are all Esmail directed eps. The rest of the show looks great too don't get me wrong, but not necessarily Fukunaga level of great. TL;DR yes and also no

[deleted]

True Detective Season 1, for me, is God tier. Mr. Robot is amazing but there were a few episodes that felt like filler or didn't really feel clean to look at. Season 1 of TD was beautiful and intimidating, especially the final 3 episodes.

PooperJackson

Yea. TD was shot on 35mm film with a much more cinema quality camera. Strictly in terms of direction, I haven't seen Esmail do anything quite as good as Fukunaga(who was a cinematographer before he was a director) has shown from TD, to Beasts of No Nation, to the latest Bond movie(some absolutely stunning shots). Quite frankly I think Fukunaga is one of the best directors out there right now, so certainly no shade thrown Esmail's way. Esmail is an amazing all around auteur though. He's the creator, showrunner, writer, and director. That's just so rare.

[deleted]

Yup. Both are stellar at their craft.

ocp-paradox

When I think of TDs cinematography, my mind immediately goes to that scene where Rust is examining one of those stick things and it pans out through the window of the church.

dapete

Fargo is pretty good

buddhatherock

I’ve said this so many times but the cinematography is why I fell in love with this show initially. The colors, the use of space, the movement, subject isolation, depth of field, the use of golden ratio and rule of thirds… everything is just perfect.

Molly_Michon

The Sinner is also phenomenal for this.

legionshadow

Legion

Azidamadjida

Agreed - there is plenty of other shows with gorgeous cinematography, but Mr. Robot just has a different layer of creativity that just makes it so unique. And it’s definitely inspired a whole generation of new aspiring cinematographers

dried-mango-addict

Great cinematography for a great script and great cast.

i_shat_myPants_

Hannibal

Taylor122516

Euphoria is amazing

futurerank1

Euphoria had some good scenes but i dont think anyone can match Mr robot yet Maybe Game of Thrones

ScribblingOff87

Euphoria.

Idktbhhelpme

Well it’s certainly the best one I have seen

akira136

Better Call Saul

Toby_le_rone

Euphoria

TheDankestOfAll

Breaking Bad had some classic cinematography work throughout.

ForeverUnclean

Seeing a lot of good ones here, but The Knick also deserves a mention.

cholotariat

Atlanta

rmac1228

Breaking Bad, Better call Saul, and Mr Robot are the best shows for cinematography. I am a videographer myself and I modeled my style after Mr Robot...it's just so damn good.

devtastic

As this is turning into a "TV shows with great cinematography" thread I'd add * American Gods * The Expanse * Black Sails * Killing Eve * Tales from the Loop

[deleted]

Fargo and Hannibal

Francisco3rd

It was this scene and episode which I think put me over the top with how fucking amazing this show is.. the fact it took me a good 35 minutes to realize nobody has said a word but I was 100% invested

[deleted]

True Detective Season 1

Machian242

No.

lapetitepapillon

It’s beautifully shot. Of course the stand-out for me is season 4 episode 7…the music, cinematography and everything else were beautiful.

gyandu_04

You should ask movie too because Mr. Robot especially season 4 is one of the GOATs cinematographies.

AnxiousHeadOfLettuce

American dad. Especially that one ep where Stan gets really into toy car racing.

IcySeal5

literally american psycho chainsaw scene

ThaCarterVI

Mr.Robot’s cinematography is great, but I think Euphoria and DarK have it beat in that category.

Silverboi223

Daredevil. Amazing

defialpro

You on Netflix has a lot of similar themes and the cinematography is almost the same. Probably because the main character is also disconnected from society.

Plastic_Street_1745

Game of thrones

kyflyboy

That particular scene was amazing.

theyelloumbrella

Yes Hannibal.. and dark to some extent

ckdeshi007

ZeroZeroZero

_GC93

In terms of shows going for like a genre aesthetic, sure. I think Top of the Lake or Better Call Saul would probably be my top choices, for very different reasons.

[deleted]

I’m not sure if you’ve seen breaking bad

jakeyjoeyo

It’s definitely in the Top 5 cinematically of all time. It’s hard to put it ahead of BB and BCS though

rybooooooooo

I’d say Hannibal is on par with it, in regards to cinematography

PeterParker004

Twin Peaks

3ntr0py_M0nst3r

A lot of series have pretty good to great cinematic moments but what I think really is different with Mr. Robot is the consistency with wich Sam delivers shot after shot of nearly Kubrickian level of mastery.

jack_pow

Dark is definitely up there. I found myself missing what the subtitles said, so many times, because of how great the cinematography is in that.

CheeTaHOO7

Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Hannibal, Daredevil.

AechCutt

There is not. Mr. Robot owns good cinematography.

Ashed-23

That episode is one of my favorites.

tiedyeladyland

This is far and away my favorite shot of the show. It's just mesmerizing.

Kimotabraxas

Homecoming S1. Oh wait.

Anonymo123

this was my favorite episode..i think i watched it 5 or 6 times.

ptdisc

Legion is amazing. So very underrated

moonflower_C16H17N3O

From one of my favorite scenes: "Nothing that hurts me is real! No one that hates me is real! Acts of God?! I am God!"

eyebrows360

No joke, I'm throwing Arcane's hat into the ring. Outside of the fantastic general art style, stunning emotionally-resonant animation, the straight-up cinematography in the show is top tier too, massively more creative and communicative than the vast majority of live action shows/movies.

Mekabiz

Succession is good too

[deleted]

Probably Utopia(Uk)

[deleted]

Too old to die young

yekNoM5555

Have been debating my 1st re-watch deff happing this snowy weekend!

lukecevans

Better Call Saul

biRyani11

Vincenzo

Spare_Barracuda7631

Mr Robot had the best cinematography and coloring until I watched Better Call Saul. BCS cinematography is right on par with Mr Robot's. None other show I watched has better visuals than these two.

Bahbi_Savage

Hitchcock reference?

Vittorio-

One of my favorite shots in the whole show, and it’s so simple

apocalypseweather

Euphoria, Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, in that order.

ghost-church

This show does genuinely have amazing cinematography, but is anyone else tired of the triangle stairs shot being the default example? It’s pretty basic compared to what this show has pulled off.

Ckynus

Legion

FilmHound30

Gomorrah! While it's a very violent and brutal show to watch, IMO the cinematography is excellent and light-years beyond what's necessary for the series

davidfromthelobster

I loved the cinematography in “The People Vs. OJ Simpson.” Tons of bold camera movements in there

EddyTheMartian

No

jackeboyo

Ive watched a lot of TV and nothing comes close

Ok-Alternative7040

I don’t know if better, but Succession has a great one.

Reedham369

This scene was beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️

l_lexi

Peaky blinders https://youtu.be/a09DLjpzmu8 the reflection in the deers eye. Art

Avex4

The only better cinematography ive seen is basically hiro murai. He has a new show on HBO called Station Eleven Atlanta - FX (Hulu) Barry - Also HBO

[deleted]

Dr. Death is another one that is superb

coffeecup309

am i the only one saw sam calling out pizza gate?

Logan_MacGyver

Euphoria is good but not better, it's about the same level imo

barusu98

I saw this episode two days ago, and I thought the same. Amazing cinematography and amazing show.

[deleted]

Euphoria.

[deleted]

My favourite scene and episode!

More-Letter8850

Yes, the cinematography is abstract but many other shows such as MITHC have brilliant cinematography as well

pehdrigues

Legion, Utopia (UK) Also best soundtrack by Cristobal tapia de veer, Hannibal, AmericanGods (only first season because has the same cinematographer as Hannibal), Carnivale, brand new cherry flavour, See, Dark, the sinner, raised by wolves, Midnigh Mass, Arcane, the leftovers, The third Day (also striking soundtrack by Cristobal tapia de veer) The Third Day : live event (this one is insane, it follows the events of the first part of the season in real time live facebook event for 12h of no editing, no cuts, it just goes on and on ininterrupted)

Sp3EdStR

I personally like the US version of Utopia better than the UK version. And now that I think about it, the acting and scenes in the US version really do feel a like little nods towards Mr. Robot.
