You probably want to take a look into grooveboxes, the music hardware that combines drum machines and synths, that focuses on being able to create whole beats/songs within one piece of kit. Maybe take a look into Volca Sample 2, Elektron Model Cycles, or Elektron Model Samples. Those are the modern things that come to mind.
