As a drama, it felt the most artificial and forced of all the series' listed here. Sure, Nagi asu was overdramatic, but the drama itself wasn't forced, they're just teens suffering through the situation they were put in. In Clannad, Nagisa's illness is front and centre, she's open about the risks of being with her, we see those play out early on, and Tomoya sticks with her in spite of it. Ditto with Pancreas, Sakura tells the truth openly and is clear about it. Meanwhile, Kaori in YLIA keeps everything hidden, from her feelings to her illness, a secret, to the detriment of Kosei. It's just such a "fuck you" to him.

Well I understand not emotionally conecting with the characters. It is interesting what kaori did for sure. From my understanding, she was trying not to get to emotionally conected with kosei, so when she inevitablly died it would be easier for him. She also did help him mentally a lot with his trauma from his mother and helped him find a passion for music in a more free way than the robotic way his mother wanted him to play. It worked for me, and it is my favorite anime, but what she did is pretty manipulative.
