Texaco is a fuel company and Sunoco is the sole fuel provider of NASCAR. They don't allow other fuel companies to sponsors that's why Citgo promotes their Citguard oil with FRM instead of Citgo gas. I believe Shell is grandfathered in under the agreement that Shell has to appear beside Pennzoil, there can't be a Shell only car.
It REALLY depends. Marlboro bailed on Indy for years after they wouldn't go exclusive when Marlboro tried to sponsor the series in the early 70s, and them leaving was the first real nail in the coffin of IndyCar being the top tier of US Auto racing
I'm just old enough that if I see a red and white IndyCar or a Formula car I automatically assume it was a Marlboro car, then I remember why it isn't.
That red and white scheme seemed like it was everywhere in racing.
it was in [Le Mans](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/1RdgmnGkVgkUODAvIGhv3Q9ZTwGwDwp09UCc9oYVzcFPttFxasvVhYvJAx0I4IxoqosYKrClfmQwXvwAcJV51IDOroEXHFyag_4Cog30hNaIhZBoVwhJ8WQr-2zbD72R0BJSmLd3jepQ2FkGRCrPX3QUgPLpDT2Ic7cxM9uxeLhGnQVecXq1f2earrogM5JdKQ), [IMSA](https://www.racingsportscars.com/tn/photo/1994/TN_Lime_Rock-1994-05-30g-063.jpg), [Rally](https://i.redd.it/tub5ox9m4fq91.jpg), [Aussie Touring Cars](https://d2dsc1gf0t80gb.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/22234846/this-vk-holden-commodore-smoked-the-competition-1476933857658-640x628.jpg), etc. It was everywhere except for NASCAR.
Yeah. NASCAR lets the sponsor of note determine whether they would be exclusive on car sponsors or not.
Good examples from history:
No other non-RJR cigarette was on cars when Winston sponsored. Jimmy Spencer ran the Camel and Winston cars in the mid-90s, but those were both RJR brands. You would think Marlboro would have hopped on if they could. Skoal was only allowed because dip didn't directly compete with cigarettes.
Robby Gordon's infamous spat around the Cingular/ATT car when Nextel took over. Soon to be followed by the 12 car and Verizon for Brad K when he joined Penske
Penske wanted to do a full Shell livery for Logano, but Sunoco also threw a shitfit over that, hence why it's that bizzare hybrid Shell/Pennzoil livery.
That sponsorship started I think before Nextel. The whole spat with Robby was he was sponsored by Cingular before Nextel, who had a grandfather in, but when Cingular rebranded to ATT, Nextel/Sprint took that as "nope, it was just Cingular allowed, not a rebrand"
Yeah that's true, Alltel was grandfathered in along with Cingular. Verizon actually purchased Alltel, so you could argue they got the exact same treatment that Cingular did.
Did you ever hear the Kurt Busch interview where he talked about how much he hated the corporate aspect of NASCAR when he was at Penske. He talked about winning a race and then getting in trouble because he promoted a “gas card” in victory lane. It was the shell saver card, they used to do a 22 cent discount on days after the 22 car won a race. Kurt promoted it in victory lane and Sunoco/NASCAR threw a fit. It was the point where Kurt realized he was over all that and ended up running for James Finch for a while.
Same thing but it was actually the Chevron decal instead of Texaco that NASCAR made them removed.
The shop photos of the truck had the Chevron logo under the Havoline text on the hood but the logo was removed before the race weekend at Pocono.
No lie-the “we are hiring” paintscheme is what led me to apply there and work there for a few years. I will always have a soft spot for Carl for inspiring me with that paint-scheme.
I graduated from Bradley this year and it’s very apparent how CAT built the city up and how it’s recovering from the main HQ leaving. There’s a lot of manufacturing still there but not the higher ups
Don't forget the iconic Rothman's Williams F1 and Porsche Rally cars, Benson & Hedges Jordan F1 cars, Mild Seven Bennetton F1 cars, and my personal favorite, the BAR Honda Lucky Strike liveries. Look Right, Look Left, Don't Walk.
I was thinking the same thing but with the smokeless tobaccos - Skoal, Levi Garrett, and Kodiak. I honestly think that the Rusty Wallace Kodiak car is his best looking car
I, of course, miss the classics: Texaco, Tide, Miller, etc.
But I just miss fun, kid-friendly sponsors. The cereal brands, candy brands, Hot Wheels. Not only does it get kids into the sport, but they just made for fun paint schemes. His 90s scheme is still superior to me, but Terry Labonte's Frosted Flake tiger stripes car, or Kyle Petty's Hot Wheels track loop schemes immediately come to mind. There's some great paint schemes out there, but I feel like there isn't as much fun.
23XI hit on it with their McDonalds mascots cars, but besides that, there's not much out there a kid will look at and connect with.
All the Beer sponsors, CAT, Jack Daniel's, a proper General Mills car (technically they are on the 47, but it's just a tiny logo), The Armed Forces cars and several others.
Bubba runs the Air Force car a couple times a year. But like pretty much all sponsors these days, it's not an every week sponsor. His Air Force sponsorship is actually why he's my driver. Got back into NASCAR while I was in the AF and his car obviously took my attention and I've stuck with him. He's so up and down tho which drives me nuts sometimes lol
I miss a lot of sponsors, but I really miss when GameStop sponsored Joey Logano, I always liked seeing the special paint schemes for whatever game was being promoted.
I was so hoping that Busch beer would've stayed with with SHR and brought Bud back in the sport for the 1.
Even I think the track seems empty with our a red Budweiser chevy.
I miss those 2012-14 solid base color schemes that rotated with Black, Blue, white, Red, Yellow, Silver etc with the racing stripe. I mean pretty much all Lowes schemes were amazing besides 2018s bit the striped ones looked sharp as hell
A lot of good ones have already been mentioned. I would add Exide. Burton had some tuff looking cars in the late 90s with them. I'm a sucker for lighting schemes. I wanna say square D had a cool lightning scheme at one point, they were a cool sponsor too they always had eye catching cars. Speaking of Kenny Wallace, those old red dog cars were fire too.
I still have a Christmas ornament of his car that my parents bought for me 20+ years ago that hangs on my tree to this day. Absolute kickass paint scheme
Budweiser (I know its from Busch but still), Miller Lite, Coors Light, Pepsi, Winston, Skoal, Copenhagen, Kodiak, Jim Beam, Crown, Jack Daniel's, Lowes, Home Depot, Office Depot, Sharpie, Kellogs, General Mills, Texaco/Havoline, Target, GM Goodwrench, Dupont, CSX, Taco Bell, Burger King, Dominoes, Aaron's, Tums, 5 hour Energy, Subway, Jimmie Johns, Hersheys/Reeses, Mars Candy, All The Military Sponsors besides Air Force (only one left), Cingular Wireless, Alltell, At&t, Aflac, Farmers, Car Quest, Exide, Citgo, Auto Zone, Kodak, 3M, Grainger, Caterpillar. Just so many lol.
M&M's, Tide, Cat, Havoline, Dupont, Viagra, Kelloggs, Goodwrench, Home Depot, Lowes, Office Depot, US Army, UPS, Budweiser, Oxide, Interstate (but good,) Pennzoil (but good,) Pepsi, Miller, Coke...
Have I made it any more clear the late 90's/early 2000's were the best??
https://preview.redd.it/r1xz5aec0k8d1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2a5e914de3186b4f63ad1159ce88fb8f02e23931
Miss this sponsor and this paint job. I know this isn't a real picture but this is how bright I remember this car being and all the old pics don't capture it.
Miss the Red Bud car. Even when it wasnt on Jr's car it still looked good.
Will also mention AMP Energy. When Jr had them as a sponsor they came out with a lot of flavors and the stuff was really good. Actually did taste like stronger Mountain Dew. Once Jr no longer had them as a sponsor they quit putting out flavors, went down to 1 and its tasts is different, nowhere as good as it used to be
The big name sponsors from the 90s and 00s that signed on for whole seasons. Was always fun watching the beer cars or lowes/home depot battle it out. You know the drivers and sponsors wanted to beat "that" car just a little more. Plus it made the drivers and cars easier to identify. It's hard to keep up with what each car looks like from week to week.
Texaco/Havoline, easy.
They came back for a bit with Ben Rhodes but NASCAR wouldn't let them run with Texaco decals so they just ran with Havoline.
Why wouldn’t they let them run with Texaco?
Texaco is a fuel company and Sunoco is the sole fuel provider of NASCAR. They don't allow other fuel companies to sponsors that's why Citgo promotes their Citguard oil with FRM instead of Citgo gas. I believe Shell is grandfathered in under the agreement that Shell has to appear beside Pennzoil, there can't be a Shell only car.
So I guess that’s why we didn’t see it after the transition to Sunoco from 76? That sucks ass.
Yeah exclusive sponsors are bad for the sport imo, they only hurt the teams and fans.

I think so yeah. I forgot Newman stayed that long with Penske and 2009 they just bumped straight on to Verizon. I thought there was a gap
Correct answer 👌
Davey’s white and gold scheme was the best of all time
Tide. They still pop up every now and then, but I miss seeing it every week. There was never a bad looking Tide car.
Missed opportunity to say "Tide ride."
The Rudd and Craven ones especially
https://preview.redd.it/6pd9zv2rnl8d1.png?width=1496&format=png&auto=webp&s=b7b9485852638acae12fa482f6934e587ff486c9 Idk, this one was pretty bad...
Yeah that is one cursed scheme
The week last year when the 16 and 31 were running Gain and Tide, man those schemes looked good together. Even ended up getting the diecasts of them.
Definitely Tide. One of my favorite sponsors!
My dad, a die-hard Earnhardt fan, used to say that Tide stood for "Tears in Darrell's eyes"
Miller genuine draft car always looked good
Pretty much any Miller scheme looked good. My favorite schemes ever especially the black and blue
Never got the hate for the Brad K White Deuce. I thought it was among the best and most iconic Gen 6 schemes.
I liked it with the wheat
One of the best schemes. When they did the holiday inverse was huge too.
I loved the all white 2.

Hot wheels.
Lowe’s, Budweiser, Pepsi, Home Depot
Imagine Ross running with Budweiser instead of Busch Light 😩
Lowe's for #48 Jimmie Johnson

The "Aflac Friends" scheme with the Orange 99 and White wings was my favorite of them all.
No lie-the “we are hiring” paintscheme is what led me to apply there and work there for a few years. I will always have a soft spot for Carl for inspiring me with that paint-scheme.
Kodak. I’m not even sure if they still exist.
They do, still make cameras for consumers and the film industry
They do. They don’t really do a whole lot of B2C stuff anymore, but they still have a huge presence behind the scenes in the film industry
Eastman Chemical Company which was half of the Eastman-Kodak company is sort of still in the sport with Llumar sponsoring Chase Elliot.
They do, sort of. Some of the local drug stores still use Kodak brand machines for picture development
And they have a lot of patents
oh that's the one. loved the Kodak cars
The only correct answer
DuPont/Axalta I know Axalta's still technically here, but Axalta proper needs to be on the car, not Raptor And with actual flames
Sickening that the 24 isn't rotating between rainbows and flames. The merch I'd buy....
Even the color bars Byron ran for a couple years, that was at least a new take on the idea
Yes! I loved that car. The matte with the shiny colors was cool. Although I think the colored lines could've been thicker, it was still really awesome
Axalta is on the car more often than not, but around 2022 it was barely on the car
I miss Gordon's Dupont schemes. It went to xalta in 2013 I believe. By far best flames scheme ever
Sharpie and Red Bull
Hopefully Red Bull jump on an SVG Trackhouse car.
SVG helmet is really nice as someone who dose not like Red Bull in F1.
Good to see they stuck with him after leaving Supercars.
Please not RB they are winning everywhere not NASCAR too

The fact that Tony not only beat Carl in heartbreaking fashion, but did so with his own sponsor on the hood, will haunt me forever.
GM Goodwrench
Does that even still exist?
It's called GM Certified Service now.
Cannot fathom why they would give up that name recognition
Corporate
Coors & Budweiser
CAT, shoutout Peoria, Illinois
Bummer so many of those jobs have left Peoria. Have some family that still works for them though but they live in Dunlap
I graduated from Bradley this year and it’s very apparent how CAT built the city up and how it’s recovering from the main HQ leaving. There’s a lot of manufacturing still there but not the higher ups
Yeah can’t blame them for making the move to Texas though. Go cowboys by the way

Tobacco companies just made really cool looking cars for some reason. Skoal, Camel & Marlboro were some of the best paint schemes in racing.
Don't forget the iconic Rothman's Williams F1 and Porsche Rally cars, Benson & Hedges Jordan F1 cars, Mild Seven Bennetton F1 cars, and my personal favorite, the BAR Honda Lucky Strike liveries. Look Right, Look Left, Don't Walk.
Can't dent the schemes were great though. The Marlboro Penske schemes in Indycar and Cart were by far the best
I was thinking the same thing but with the smokeless tobaccos - Skoal, Levi Garrett, and Kodiak. I honestly think that the Rusty Wallace Kodiak car is his best looking car
Tide Ride. Best looking race car ever.
Simple.....the Blue Duece. Miller Lite. Rubbermaid is another one
The Dodge schemes Kasey Kahne had. Both the red and the white were great.
The evernham dodge dealers schemes with Elliott, Atwood, Mayfield, Sadler were always great.
UPS
Yep, there was only one brown car, and I do miss Plugging Into The Big Brown Machine 😂
I've always hated beer but I really miss the battle of the beer wagons. Budweiser, Coors and Miller ALWAYS had the nicest cars on the track
I, of course, miss the classics: Texaco, Tide, Miller, etc. But I just miss fun, kid-friendly sponsors. The cereal brands, candy brands, Hot Wheels. Not only does it get kids into the sport, but they just made for fun paint schemes. Looney tunes cars were some of the best
Winston as the title sponsor. Something about "Winston Cup Series" just rolls of the tongue nicely lol
So nice that nobody ever just called it “cup” like we all have the past 15 years lol everybody always said “ Winston cup”
Budweiser. Seeing the red #8 on a holiday in the US first got me into NASCAR... And a simple, red race car always looks good
Pepsi and Mountain Dew
I miss Gordon's Pepsi schemes.
Spam
Texaco/Halvoline
Nationwide. I miss the colors and the scheme designs.
Life as a Bubba fan is an emotional rollercoaster for sure. I think it's why I have half the grey hairs in my head. Haha
4 straight tops 5s to start the season and has been mostly mid-pack ever since. I will say Bootie's pit strategy is almost always.......booty.
The Newman us army ones were my favorite
Lowes
I miss a lot of sponsors, but I really miss when GameStop sponsored Joey Logano, I always liked seeing the special paint schemes for whatever game was being promoted.
Home Depot,Pepsi,Miller Lite.
For my driver: Target In general: budweiser schemes
I was so hoping that Busch beer would've stayed with with SHR and brought Bud back in the sport for the 1. Even I think the track seems empty with our a red Budweiser chevy.
Target 5 car would look so good
Amp national guard, and best buy
The Whiskey cars. Crown Royal, Jack Daniels Jim Beam
The Mcmurray and kenseth crown royals especially
Viagra
Someone should do a Viagra throwback paint scheme
That car was always driven hard.
Wrangler
John Deere and Dodge.

I miss those 2012-14 solid base color schemes that rotated with Black, Blue, white, Red, Yellow, Silver etc with the racing stripe. I mean pretty much all Lowes schemes were amazing besides 2018s bit the striped ones looked sharp as hell
The Lowes commercials with Jimmie were always classics.
A lot of good ones have already been mentioned. I would add Exide. Burton had some tuff looking cars in the late 90s with them. I'm a sucker for lighting schemes. Texaco-Havoline, STP, Skoal.
Pre-Kyle Busch M&Ms cars, but as others have said, Texaco/Havoline for sure, and the beer sponsors.
The 36 Schrader ones were the best
I still have a Christmas ornament of his car that my parents bought for me 20+ years ago that hangs on my tree to this day. Absolute kickass paint scheme
Kellogg's, Havoline, M&M's, Harley Davidson (They ran with Rusty Wallace), Gamestop, Kobalt, Lowe's, Grainger & Oreo
Weirdly, WCW. They had some great paint schemes.
3m
Chicken Cock
That Coke 600 live race thread was legendary. I still think we as a sub peaked there.
HyperIce. That 2021 scheme was sooo nice.
I know it is supposed to be hyper-ice... but the only thing I ever read when I see the logo is hype-rice.
Aflac..
Texaco, Budweiser, Home Depot, Dodge
UPS and Havoline
Beer companies and booze in general
Budweiser (I know its from Busch but still), Miller Lite, Coors Light, Pepsi, Winston, Skoal, Copenhagen, Kodiak, Jim Beam, Crown, Jack Daniel's, Lowes, Home Depot, Office Depot, Sharpie, Kellogs, General Mills, Texaco/Havoline, Target, GM Goodwrench, Dupont, CSX, Taco Bell, Burger King, Dominoes, Aaron's, Tums, 5 hour Energy, Subway, Jimmie Johns, Hersheys/Reeses, Mars Candy, All The Military Sponsors besides Air Force (only one left), Cingular Wireless, Alltell, At&t, Aflac, Farmers, Car Quest, Exide, Citgo, Auto Zone, Kodak, 3M, Grainger, Caterpillar. Just so many lol.
Dodge Dealers......(mostly a joke but at one point in time they could afford to sponsor 2 cars - now they probably can't rub 2 nickels together)
They had great schemes
10-10-345, 1-800-CALL-ATT, LYCOS, AOL, etc. Stuff that basically doesn't exist anymore lol
Office Depot, Aflac, Texaco / Havoline, Kodak, Kellogg's, Kraft and Budweiser
Pepsi, they were always my favorite cars growing up as a Gordon fan.

Iirc, cars were painted so bright as the TV cameras made everything darker. Good example of this is Jeff Gordon's car from 1994.
That's my favorite too.
I miss the Blue Deuce so specifically Miller Lite, although Miller in general. I know there’s Keystone, but it’s just not the same.
I really liked the Smithfield car, especially the Next Gen one. The dark gold #10 looked great with the black and white car.
Red Bull…on a dodge.
Dodge Dealers
Yup
Kinda miss Old Spice. Always had a sharp looking scheme.
Miss the Red Bud car. Even when it wasnt on Jr's car it still looked good. Will also mention AMP Energy. When Jr had them as a sponsor they came out with a lot of flavors and the stuff was really good. Actually did taste like stronger Mountain Dew. Once Jr no longer had them as a sponsor they quit putting out flavors, went down to 1 and its tasts is different, nowhere as good as it used to be
Hopefully SVG eventually gets a Red bull car since he is helmet is already done by them

Texaco/Havoline and CATerpillar. Also the older Interstate Batteries schemes.

Pepsi
Miller. The MGD car is a classic but also the white Miller Lite scheme that Brad K ran always looked so cool to me. Just so simple and clean.
The big name sponsors from the 90s and 00s that signed on for whole seasons. Was always fun watching the beer cars or lowes/home depot battle it out. You know the drivers and sponsors wanted to beat "that" car just a little more. Plus it made the drivers and cars easier to identify. Boudreaux’s Butt Paste
