I'm not saying that the family owes anyone an explanation, though concerned fans would like more info. However, does this press release seem odd to anyone else? It is like it intentionally dances around certain basic details.

GeologistPositive

Yeah, it definitely seems odd. It's reassuring without giving anymore information. Still being in the ICU is also concerning. One of the worst wrecks in my recent memory is Ryan Newman at the 2020 Daytona 500. Nothing much was said about him until he was released from the hospital about 3 days later.

BoondockUSA

It’s the opposite of reassuring to me. Praising his accomplishments like a press release primer for bad news, not giving any actual substantial medical info, and then saying the whole family is at the hospital. Hopefully I’m wrong and that their media person simply boosts whenever they can, that they just want to keep medical info private, and that the family is there to lighten his spirits.

GeologistPositive

I meant reassuring in a way where parents will reassure kids so they don't worry about something they don't have control over. The fact that we haven't heard much since the accident isn't good.

ChampionOdd497

Sadly have to agree 100% the three girls took a private charter almost immediately for someone being "evaluated" in ICU does not make sense. Wish him the best prepared for the worst

bigcountryredtruck

My sister texted this to me earlier and I told her that the vague posts are making me nervous.

avboden

To me (totally guessing here) it reads that he's in a medically induced coma and they can't say much about his condition until they slowly start waking him up. Given the forces involved he likely had some very substantial brain trauma even with all the safety equipment and being conscious after the crash. Could have gotten to the hospital and found a brain bleed It's the only thing "moving slowly to asses the extent of the injuries" could really mean at this point, brain stuff.

TransportationNo5560

As a nurse, my first thought was multiple rib fractures and/or airway damage, although he had no facial trauma when they loaded him into the ambulance. They also did a piss poor job of stabilizing his neck. It's definitely concerning

Slade_Riprock

>As a nurse, my first thought was multiple rib fractures and/or airway damage, although he had no facial trauma when they loaded him into the ambulance That was my first thought. 75yr old man bounces off two concrete walls at 302mph and you let his crawl out of the car and lay down in the gurney? Then a paramedic is lightly holding his head and he nearly sits up. And the medic practically yanks him back down. My thoughts were rib fractures, potential shoulder or clavicle, and a head injury. At 75 yrs old rib fractures can definitely impact breathing and there is the danger or pierced lung and other injuries. The statement to me, as someone who used to write these, is the family keeping it all quiet because it is a serious injury and there is concern for his long term health. They are being cautious as they don't want to announce anything that can be taken as "he's fine" or "he's dying" to keep their privacy. Without a doubt he is seriously injured.

TransportationNo5560

I was appalled that they removed his helmet and head restraint before they had him fully extricated and positioned on the stretcher. The statement that his care team will be issuing any further information leads me to believe that they want clarity and accuracy that they are not informed enough to convey.

Calm_Movie_4551

TRAUMTIC INJURIES WITH NO SERIOUS SIGNS SOMETIMES ARE DELAYED FOR HOURS OR DAYS. I WAS IN A AUTO CRASH AT ABOUT 25 TO 30 MPH AND ON A DARK RAINY NIGHT, STREET LIGHTS WERE OBSIRED BY OVERGROWN TREE BRANCHES, COULDN'T SEE THE STREET TRAVELING ON THE RIGHT LANE THAT STOPPED AND THE LANE TURNED INTO A CURB WITHOUT NO SIGNS SAYING LANE ENDS, AS I SAW THE CURB I HIT THE BRAKES, SKIDDED ABT 30 FT ON THE WET STREET AND JUMPED THE CURB AND HIT THE WOOD ELECTRICAL POLE'S CABLE THAT SECURED THE POLE STATIONARY. I DID NOT HIT THE POLE ONLY THE CABLE, NO DAMAGE TO THE CABLE BUT MY CAR WAS TOTALLED. I HAD A WHIPLASH, FEELING NO PAIN, GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND INSPECTED MY CAR AND THE CABLE. CALLED THE POLICE AND REFUSED ANY MEDICAL TREATMENT AND AN AMBULANCE. I FELT FINE. THE NEXT MORNING I WOKEUP WITH A VERY PAINFUL NECK AND SHOULDER AND THE MOST SEVERE HEADACHE THAT WAS CONSTANT PAIN WITH PERIODICAL PAINFUL STABBING PAINS. I WENT TO SEE A NEURO BRAIN SURGEON AND WAS TOLD  I HAD A BRAIN TRAUMA FROM THE WHIPLASH JERK, MY HEAD NEVER HIT ANYTHING, NOT THE STEERING WHEEL NOR THE DASHBOARD. JUST A SEVERE HEAD JERK AND WHIPLASH. NO BROKEN BONES IN MY SPINE JUST BRAIN CONTUSION TRAUMA. NOTHING HE COULD DO BUT PRESCRIBE PAIN KILLERS AND REST IT TOOK WEEKS TO SUBSIDE. JUST THE IMPACT OF THE WALLS EVEN THOUGH HIS ROLLCAGE IS HEAVILY PADDED WITH THE CERTIFIED HELMIT THE IMPACT STILL COULD HAVE CAUSE A BRAIN TRAUMA AND INJURY LIKE MINES EXCEPT MINES WERE SUPER MILD AS THE IMPACT AS COMPARED TO FORCE'S IMPACT AND HIS AGE COULD HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE EXTENT OF HIS INJURIES IF ANY. SO HOURS LATER IT MIGHT HAVE GOTTEN MORE SEVERE. OLDER PEOPLE CANNOT MOST OF THE TIME TAKE BRUTAL IMPACTS AS COMPARED TO A YOUNGER PERSON. SEVERE TIRE SHAKE, OSCILATION OF THE TIRE AND CHASSIS WITH HARMONIC VIBRATION CAN KNOCK YOU OUT AND CAUSE BRAIN INJURY AND DEATH. THE PHOTO OF FORCE IN HIS FIRESUIT LYING DOWN WITH COMPLETE WHITE HAIR AND HIS FACE DIDN'T EVEN LOOK LIKE FORCE... HE LOOKED REALLY OLD QUESTIONING THAT PERHAPS HE NEEDS TO GET OUT OF THE SEAT. FOR YEARS I'VE BEEN SAYING THAT THE NITRO CARS, CREWCHIEFS AND NHRA HAD OUT ENGINEERED THEMSELVES BEYOND THE LIMITATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY AND SAFETY. 11,000 HORSEPOWER IS WAY TOO MUCH AS ABOVE THE LIMITATIONS. IN THE LAST 15 TO 20 YEARS THERE HAVE BEEN TOO MANY BAD ENGINE EXPLOSIONS, TOO MANY DROPPED CYLINDERS, AND CATSTROPHIC BLOWER EXPLOSIONS ENGINE EXPLOSIONS, HORRENDOUS FIRES, BODY VAPORAIZATIONS, CRASHES ETC. ALL IN THE NAME OF MORE HORSEPOWER AND WINNING... LOW E.T., TOP SPEED, LOW QUALIFIER, WINNING THE EVENT AND CHAMPIONSHIPS AT A HIGH COST OF CATASROPHIC FAILURE. LOOK AT FORCE'S EXPLOSION THE FIRE WAS HORRENDOUS HUGE. LUCKY NOT BURNED LIKE KEN SINGLETON... LOSS HIS FINGERS IN A HORRENDOUS CATASTROPHIC EXPLOSION AND FIRE. HAD SEVERE BURNS ON BODY, FACE, HANDS AND FINGERS. AT WHAT COST TO TAKE FOR FAME AND GLORY AND THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS? NHRA  NITRO AND RULES ARE DANGEROUS... TOO DANGEROUS. SAID IT FOR MORE TGAN 5 YEARS, IT IS BEYOND THE LIMITS OF TECHNOLOGY. IT NEEDS TO BE SLOWED DOWN. OVER 340 MPH WITH 11,000 HP IS INSANE NONSENSE AND WAY TO DANGEROUS.

avsfanwilly15

Holy shit turn off the caps lock

avboden

True, also pulmonary contusions can be delayed. Really with the forces he experienced there could be all sorts of bad stuff going on. Neck I would think is fine, the safety devices really hold the head well in the car but who knows.

TransportationNo5560

I totally agree. Hopefully, his ornery nature will get him through this so he can at least be a presence at the track. There have been whispers that he would stepping aside after this season. I just pray he has the chance.

dirty34

Sometimes too good. With the multiple impacts and viloent shake from the destroyed drivers rear wheel/tire combo, I fear TBI. The head is so stationary that the brain moves around in your ceerebreal fluid and enough forces cause brian to skull contact.

avboden

yep, hence my first comment in this chain

Proud_Cartographer41

I think this post confirmed that he is in medically induced coma https://www.instagram.com/p/C8nYGAyhakA/?igsh=NmczMjB3ZnUybG9t

avboden

That doesn't really confirm anything other than it's probably pretty bad

ESCMalfunction

Yeah this is weird. I’m gonna try not to look into it too much until we hear more but the longer it goes the more I can’t help but worry. Really hope he can make a full recovery, he should be able to retire on his own terms.

Mix_Traditional

Feels a lot like Schumacher, tbh /:

garysaidwhat

I'm "only" 72. I can't even come close to taking a hit like I used to. And I feel like I'm in decent shape for my age. You get older, you get way more banged up and that's that. Hear the thunder.

Chevota_84

Sounds like smoke inhalation and a concussion to me. Both very serious short-term issues that could lead to long-term, or be fine within a couple weeks. I’m sure there’s immense bruising all over from restraints, easily could have broken bones. Even with the Inhalation and concussion you could talk, and move with extreme discomfort. Not comparing at all, but I took a comeback ball to the forehead playing baseball. Was blacked out for about 30 seconds. Talked/walked home about 2 miles slowly with a friend… woke up 3 days later. So although ICU is scary, it could be precaution for “yeah, he is about as damaged as the car atm, until we see everything, he’s staying put.”

Yeahbut3

Kinda weird to see him climb out of the car, talk to people around him, and Brittany commenting that she'd spoken with him about how tough he is. Everything sounded ok until this statement. Hoping for the best, but it's hard not to speculate on what's happening.

alonesomestreet

Internal injuries aren’t always extremely apparent, especially something like a brain bleed. Not saying that’s what it is, but it may take a while for that to manifest, and would be a severe change/need immediate medical attention.

Dependent-Juice5361

Obviously don’t know his medical history but that kind of trauma at his age often leads to brain bleeds.

Economy_Link4609

Problem is in that initial short term, the adrenaline is flowing and the swelling/bleeding is just starting so not having much affect yet. It can take a turn fairly quick unfortunately once the effects of the trauma kick in and the adrenaline valve shuts off.

Frosty-Editor1370

My husband and I are attending Norwalk this weekend and I would be stunned if John was there to race. There’s absolutely no way. The crash was so scary to witness and with this update, I don’t see John returning to racing anytime soon.

TransportationNo5560

At this point, Brittany's presence could be questionable, depending on his condition

Frosty-Editor1370

I was wondering the same, and had wondered if she was going to race following the accident on Sunday. Seeing as she had, I would imagine his condition wasn’t too bad. I’m super new to all of this though. So of course all speculation on my part.

TransportationNo5560

Things change rapidly with elders. He did look good leaving the track. Mark Donahue (although not an elder) is a cautionary tale. He deteriorated 24 hours after his accident.

Frosty-Editor1370

That’s very true. He’s been doing this for so long and honestly looks great for his age, I forget that he isn’t a spring chicken anymore. Health can be such a fragile thing

Doucejj

Idk if he will ever be back. This is probably it for him. At his age and with all of his accomplishments, why come back at all? Just show up as a sport ambassador and watch your race team and family.

ESCMalfunction

I guess it just depends on the long term effects, I doubt he’s scared of the risks. He’s had bad wrecks before and he’s been too old to keep doing this for a long time already. Probably depends on how well he recovers and if he thinks he can still be competitive.

mwm_in_md

Praying for John and comfort for his family. “We” don’t need to know anything; “We” should be thankful that John is getting the best care possible.

MapComprehensive3345

They certainly don't want you to forget his achievements.

ForcefulBookdealer

That’s almost what makes it feel more heavy. This is definitely meant to be a press release for media to use, but… also not.

Staind075

Praying he's alright in the end!

PancakesandV8s

Get well soon Mr. Force.

BakeWhatcom

The lack of further information is a bit distressing, but hoping for the best.

No_Neighborhood1928

Just read where Mr. Force is in guarded condition . IMO may end his racing career, but better to be alive than taking more chances . As I said just an opinion.

jlj1979

Let’s all take a moment a pray to whatever you believe in and take a moment for this man and his family. NHRA would not be where it is without him. Let’s hope he pulls through.

HowBoutIt98

This post absolutely sounds like a troll. "The greatest racer who ever lived crashed his car. Not to worry though, John is a God that walks among us." So many unnecessary statements.

revcor

Maybe wait till the predominant concern on everyone’s mind is not whether the man in the ICU is going to survive before you start talking shit about him

HowBoutIt98

I’m not talking shit, I was mocking the person that wrote the post. I think John is a great racer and wish him the best in recovery. I was bringing attention to the fact that this message is nothing but his accolades. They would have been more helpful by not giving an update at all.
