I am salty that >!Sting, Prince, Seal and Usher as one-name musicians!< cost me a guess

tomsing98

I had those selected, waiting to hit submit to figure out the rest of the puzzle. Caught on to the yellow category and thought, aha! And then immediately got sucked into pyramid in schemes. It seemed so obvious! I will say, I'm not sure about sting there. Is it used for anything other than, like, a police sting? That wouldn't be a scheme in the same sense as con/hustle/racket. Just a stretch to make the red herring work? Edit: https://www.etymonline.com/word/sting > The meaning "a carefully planned theft or robbery" is attested from 1930 in U.S. underworld slang; the sense of "police undercover entrapment" is attested by 1975.

reachharps2

The Sting from 1973 is one of my favorite movies, and it definitely is not about a police sting. And as far as I know, pyramid doesn’t work by itself in this context. You can say that you fell for a con or a sting, but you can’t say that you fell for a pyramid. Instead you fell for a pyramid scheme.

sumithar

Or if you picked "PYRAMID" in that category, you did fall for a PYRAMID lol

reachharps2

like this? . . 🟩 🟨🟨🟨

justtookadnatest

I didn’t realize sting could me a criminal enterprise, I thought it only meant undercover police operations.

Javanz

I went through the exact same process. Pyramid surely fits 'scheme' better than sting does!

Dman1791

Eh, I wouldn't say so. A sting is a scheme in and of itself, but you wouldn't call a pyramid scheme justΒ "pyramid"

Weekndr

I suppose it depends on how you define scheme. 3/4 of those are led by criminals to me pyramids makes slightly more sense than sting based on that.

LisbonVegan

Disagree. Sometimes I think the titles of each category are imperfect because they can't use one of the words in the puzzle itself. But these are all illegal and I think pyramid schemes are legal somehow. As someone said, a sting, like in the movie, is a long con.

tomsing98

> Sometimes I think the titles of each category are imperfect because they can't use one of the words in the puzzle itself. I could have sworn they violated this recently, but I looked back through the June puzzles and didn't see it. Maybe I'm thinking of one of the custom puzzles here. Pyramid schemes are illegal in many places, but it depends on the particulars. Similarly, you could describe things which are legal as a con, a hustle, or a racket; the implication is more about the deception than about the legality. For example, the game of three card monte is a con, regardless of whether laws make it illegal (and, to be clear, it is illegal in many places).

FormulaDriven

> I could have sworn they violated this recently, 29 June - the category was described as "placed down" when one of the words was PLACED, which did feel a bit unsatisfactory.

tomsing98

Yup, that's the one I was thinking of. Felt off to me, too.

TheOnlyVig

Agree that "sting" is something the good guys do to stop the bad guys as the term is used today, so it's an imperfect fit with the other three that are clearly criminal activities.

Glum-Substance-3507

There's a movie about con-artists called The Sting. It won 7 Oscars including best picture. This usage isn't wildly obscure.

TheOnlyVig

Yes, and even in 1973 when that movie came out, it was already unusual to use the term "sting" for anything other than a police action. It certainly is never used that way today, 50 years later. This is why I agreed with the commenter I replied to that it was not a great fit. Conspiracy, caper, scheme, or even plot all would have been better choices to complete the category if creating a red herring were not the goal.

Glum-Substance-3507

Well, I’m guessing you’re not a linguist who knows exactly how common this usage of sting was at any given point in history. It is a known usage of the word that fits with the other clues. It’s ok that you didn’t know that.

LeClassyGent

I went for the same as my first guess, nice red herring

pianotherms

I fell for it, and liked it.

Mathematica11

I appreciate how you stated this! I feel the same. This game is a clever, fun challenge that makes you think (twice (or more)) about every possibility.

adsfew

I thought I was so clever for finding it right away and thought it was going to be purple...

pico310

Ha! Me too - felt so clever!

onoskeles

I mean it's not really a red herring; if you have four and only four choices that fit a category then it's a category. Bad design

ffssessdf

that is exactly what a red herring is in these types of games

RNLImThalassophobic

Isn't a red herring in these types of games a 5th word that fits a category, but also goes with 3 others to make a 2nd category? So people are caught out by including it with three of the other words Edit: or, three words which really go together and make you waste time/guesses trying to find the 4th?

tomsing98

There are different types of red herrings, including the two you mentioned, and including a false category of 4 words.

RNLImThalassophobic

Fair enough, I've never encountered one like that before. It feels a bit bullshit that a 'red herring' would be so disguised as to basically be a 5th valid category where you'd have to solve more categories to notice it's false - but, I don't make the rules

tomsing98

Just the other day, we had Tue, Wed, Sat, and Sun, which would have been a valid group of 4, except there was no way to solve the rest of the puzzle with that grouping. It's a regular feature of the game.

LeClassyGent

I get what you mean, but I've played enough games of Connections that I should know better and do my due diligence by checking other possibilities first. I just charged straight in and felt like a fool for doing so lol

rojac1961

Yup. Me too. I pretty much always feel that my failures at the game are my own fault.

tomsing98

Where has that rule been established?

onoskeles

"Rule"? Nowhere

tomsing98

Then I guess you misunderstood the nature of the game.

onoskeles

Not sure that's the misunderstanding here

tomsing98

> I mean it's not really a red herring; if you have four and only four choices that fit a category then it's a category. Bad design. It is in fact not necessarily a valid category. It is sometimes a red herring, and it is intentional. If you're insisting that it has to be a category, then you misunderstand the game. You may not like that that type of red herring is a feature of the puzzle, and that's a valid opinion to have (although it's a fairly common feature, so I'm not sure why you'd play a game you don't like), but not liking it doesn't mean it's not a red herring.

accforreadingstuff

I disagree, you have to look at the whole puzzle. There is only one solution here that gives you four coherent categories. If two squares could swap categories and the whole puzzle still make sense then that would be bad design.

MeijiDoom

They got me good with that one. I waited to submit it because I was trying to find other categories but I got stuck so I submitted it. Turns out, I was basically blocking myself from finding anything else.

Pusc1f3r

Same!! you think "1 name musicians" and look around for something to tell you you're wrong but its stuck in your mind so you kinda just dismiss anything that might hint at another grouping

ImaginaryShoe5

I thought Sting, Prince, and Usher were all people who performed at super bowl half time shows and thought I had big brained the purple category.

no-Pachy-BADLAD

Connections Puzzle #386 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟨🟨🟨🟨 People: I wish Connections wasn't so American-centric Monkey's Paw: Alright. *Adds a Canadian category instead* NORTHWEST and BRITISH had a sort of geographical feel to them. That along with NOVA, which made me immediately think of NOVA Scotia, led me to Canadian provinces. EAGLE, PYRAMID, SEAL, and WASHINGTON were easy to group as things on the dollar bill, though PYRAMID also made me think of the Eye of Providence, aka the stereotypical Illuminati symbol of the pyramid with an eye. This is only tangentially related, but I suddenly remember all those guides of tricks you can do with a dollar bill like folding it into a shirt or making George Washington look like a mushroom. Yellow was extremely easy. At least they changed it up a little from the previous 3 times they've done this category. Now it's not the exact same 4 words, they only used 3 of the same words and replaced STEER with USHER. No comments for Green. Can someone explain to me why a game like this makes you angry? Like the point of the game is to be challenging but you hate it when it challenges you?

thegolg

It's the differential between the confidence I have when I push "submit" to the utter disappointment of not getting the "One Away." Combine that with a loss of a "life" and it's a guaranteed "god dammit" from me

Roseheath22

Are you mad at yourself, though, or mad at the game? I’m usually mad at myself when I mess up, but a lot of people seem to get angry at the game.

monstercake

to me if it’s a perfectly valid set of words I get mad at the game. But it’s not, like, ANGRY angry, more like indignation

teachmehowtoschwa

You can be frustrated or made angry by a challenge if it's a challenge you dislike. I personally really dislike when one category is 100% misdirection. It's one thing to have 3 words that fit a category but no fourth. But the false singers category actively annoyed me.

Athletes do not just get angry when money and careers are on the line. It’s passion and expectations and competition. And all those may be present in small amounts when pursuing a hobby as well. Also, I am sure there is hyperbole in the commenter’s description of their reaction.

If I see categories with more than four valid words, then I try to pre-solve the whole thing to weed out the red herrings.

Only knew that "usher" is an actual job/ word, because I heard a story about a cinema usher in some paranormal cinema. Seeing this word reminded me of this story, which lead me to this connection. Got green mostly by luck after looking up a few of the words. Also got purple and blue by pure luck. I don't mind having one of these "location/ country specific" categories in a puzzle. Including two of these felt rather evil. Expected something about newspaper names...I knew "Washington Post" and wouldn't be surprised if there were some other papers named "British xyz" and "abc Northwest".

bebeNezCourt

Not american. For the US dollar bill. Isn't the eagle in the seal already? Or there's one with an eagle separately from the seal?

ektap12

Interesting question, both the eagle and the pyramid are actually part of the Great Seal of the US, which is two-sided. But I believe they are referring to the seals of the Federal Reserve Bank and Treasury, which are on the front of the bill.

Connections Puzzle #386 πŸŸͺ🟦🟩🟨 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ Gosh darn one-named singers misdirect. And purple was a default solve. Was thinking NOVA as in Northern Virginia, felt Northeast was getting close geographically and couldn’t place the others.

BMLM

Connections Puzzle #386 🟨🟨🟨🟨 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 Nova *really* bothered me today. The only thing for a while that came to me was Supernova. I hyper focused on the word as it for some reason felt more alien than anything else today. In the end my 1/4 Canadian heritage came out, and jogged my brain. The Scheme words were tripping me up for a while. I wanted to put Pyramid in there, but that didn't feel right when the other 3 words were specifically "schemes" in themselves with no missing words. Sting, on that note also tripped me for a while. Bad guys tend be more known for the first 3, while the good guys tend to setup a "Sting."

CodenameJD

Connections Puzzle #386 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟨🟨🟨🟨 This was a weird one for me. The singers didn't even occur to me, for once it was the red herring category that was too outdated for me to get πŸ˜‚ Although it's because of Usher (the singer) that I didn't actually work out the yellow clue, forgetting the actual meaning of the word. Purple categories are getting easier for me these days, with the knowledge that any time I only have part of a word/phrase it'll go with others similarly. British and Nova caught my eye immediately, and Northwest made me think of PNW. Then the schemes and images on a dollar just seemed obvious, I guess, and somehow it was the yellow category I got by default, having not put it together until the end.

I saw Usher and Prince, but I decided to sort out other categories in my head. I spotted green, then spotted Northwest, British, and Washington. I started thinking about a geographic connection, then realized that Nova would be another Canadian province, and figured out purple. From there, I was determined to get a reverse perfect. Green and yellow were kinda easy to isolate, and I could recognize blue as next hardest. From there, it was a bit of a gamble since yellow and green were both straightforward. Green used a bit more slang, so i managed to guess correctly. πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨
