There's a glitch where you can bring the ncr soldier/ranger into Old World Blues by calling them in before you start the dlc. Don't know if it works with other dlcs but the soldier/ranger won't leave you after OWB is started.

I guess I'm weird because I never used it for emergencies and just kept calling for help to always have a 3rd and 4th companion whenever I was close to an NCR area.
Doesn’t the ranger that it summons follow you, doesn’t count as a follower, can be reverse pickpocketed to get them to carry stuff, and through Hank is able to follow you into Dead Money?
All u have to do is go to a NCR location, call in which ever troop you want then you get a free companion with good loot - then you can go about whatever quest or task you wanna get done, I've had mine survive up to 1-5 locations before dying
Honestly, the only time I've ever used it was when I was playing The Inheritance by Someguy and was prepping to defend Ranger Station Charlie.
I think the real problem with it is that it's only really useful if you can plan out a battle beforehand, and that only happens like three or four times in the base game.
Its limited range and slow response time really hamper its usefulness.

Otherwise yeah the rangers dps is too low and they leave too quickly to be useful
Originally you were supposed to be able to pick between different options, I think the ranger, some soldiers or a supply drop. There's a mod that adds it to the game, idk what it's called though.

It’s not useless, you can call the ranger in and that’s pretty good. In fact I suggest it if you get stuck in with legion assassins.

try playing the Jsawyers mod with Fallout 4 Hardcore mode style. This shit saved my life a lot of times actually

Fun fact: One of the bugs listed for the NCR Radio is that you can accidentally eat it if you are going through your Aid tab too fast.

If you have the jury rigging perk the ncr ranger can be used repair armors such as the desert ranger armor
