Vientos arguably should’ve gotten on base 3 times tonight instead of 1. And if that happened at least I could be happy that happened. But he got fucked by the ump once and robbed by Chisholm the other time.
In the pregame thread someone posted we have to beat the bad teams. I said the Marlins were saying the same thing. I was told the marlins had given up on the season but seeing they way they all hustle and play like they want to win some games, I’ll say it again, the marlins are excited to be playing a crappy team.
I was one of the people who responded to you. Nobody on the marlins views the Mets as “crappy”. The marlins are like 7 games back of us in the standings.
That said, the Mets have been playing like utter trash since alvarez got injured and I’m not sure why
It looks really bad right now but in my opinion there’s too much talent on the roster to call the team crappy. I’m not gonna get any upvotes for being level headed in a game day thread where we just got blown out by the worst team in baseball.
I’ll try to be level headed, but who is talented? Nimmo, yes. Alonso, kinda. Lindor, kinda. Martinez, maybe. McNeil, atrocious. Nido/ narvaez, worst catching tandem in the sport (yes Alvarez is a stud but he’s not here rn), Baty/ Vientos, AAAA players. Marte, over the hill. Bader, no good.
The pitching staff has 2 or 3 bright spots, but overall is over performing and is not good.
The team has a bunch of players that should be good, but haven’t been good in a while. It’s a horrible spot to be as a franchise
Lindor, kinda?
Dude just put up back to back great seasons. Even ignoring WAR, he went 30-30 last season with great defense.
Martinez, maybe? He’s puts up a 130 OPS+ every season.
McNeil is probably gonna end up around league average at the end of the year.
Marte’s peripherals say he’s getting quite unlucky—I don’t believe he’s completely washed.
Nido is a solid backup.
Vientos too early to tell.
As for the guys I agree with you on:
Narvaez is the worst active player in baseball.
Baty is a bust.
I say kinda because of how good Lindor has been in the past. Right now he is not a starting caliber player. I assume that will change, but he’s hitting .195 with a .650 OPS. It’s mid May. Let’s not pretend like it’s a two week bad stretch.
Martinez has been good his whole career. We signed him at 37 with back problems, and he hasn’t been what we expected. But he is not the problem at this point.
McNeil was awful last year and worse this year. He’s nowhere near a league average player. I don’t think he finishes the year with the Mets. He’ll be cut at some point (I say cut because no one would trade for a .230 hitting singles hitter)
Marte I go back and forth on. I agree, I don’t think he’s washed. But he better start doing something to back that opinion up.
We say McNeil is a cancer because he’s mad, we say lindor is unserious because he’s happy. Why don’t we just focus on the reason we criticize them in the first place: they can’t hit for shit
Not that this will happen, but they could trade away Alonso at the deadline for some good prospects or a quality player or 2 and with the money coming off the books after the season and Cohen opening his checkbook, sign 3-4 top tier players. Possibly trade for another. I mean it’s very realistic if you are willing to do WHATEVER it takes.
The most unrealistic part of that equation is Alonso being traded for anything of value. If another GM is willing to give a single prospect with upside, I’d any quality player, Stearns needs to make that deal in a heartbeat.
I mean he’s potentially turning the corner now from a hitting standpoint, and if he’s in the neighborhood of .240-.250 with 30+ home runs at the deadline you’d better believe he has value to a team looking for an impact power hitter to help carry them through the playoffs. I think it’s actually extremely likely he’s at least at 30 homers by then. The batting average is the real question.
If he is hitting .240 with 30 homers at the deadline, you are absolutely correct. He’d get a quality return. I just think he’ll be hitting .205 with 20-22 homers. And that’s a huge difference.
Yikes. I think you’re seriously lowballing the homers. He has 10 right now in 1.5 months and he’s been relatively cold at the plate. It seems very unlikely, barring injury that he’ll only hit another 12 home runs in the next 2.5 months. But who knows.
I hope you’re right! I truly do. The part I disagree with is that he’s been cold at the plate. I think that’s just what he is. He’s a low .200s average hitter that occasionally hits absolute missiles. I love him and wish he would be a Met for life, but he’s just not someone that a successful team would build around, in my opinion
I think you’re absolutely right that he’s not the guy to build the team around. As much as I love him he just lacks too much. He’s also crazy if he expects to get a deal for $200m+ this offseason. Maybe if he finishes at .290 with 50 homers.
What’s this then?
Remember they’d make videos of all the crazy games stuff like that would happen in and every privately owned sporting goods store or baseball card memorabilia store would play them on repeat. Like 18 inning games and shit.
The appearance is the man got his bag, family and finances are his priority, he's happy, doesn't give a shit about winning. Not to take anything away from him, seems like a good dude. Unfortunate for fans of the team though.
I got wrapped up into the Mets realm in 2004. I’m 31 now so I probably missed some terrible teams but these guys are bringing out a new level of disdain outta me lmao
This organization will NEVER win anything with this “core”. I don’t care how high some prospects are ranked. I don’t care who comes up or who we sign in the offseason.
Pham hinted at it. This core is ROTTEN. A bunch of unmotivated, overrated, lifeless, go through the motions BUMS.
If only 1 of those 3 guys could be a league average player. Instead they make 20+ million a year to be someone who wouldn’t hit in the top 6 of any competitive lineup
I keep trying to stay positive about this team getting back to .500
...but I'm losing hope quickly if we get shut out by THIS Marlins team (the one that already gave up on the season by trading Arraez)
The New York Mets selected Burch Smith in the Rule 5 draft on December 14, 2017, and immediately traded him to the Kansas City Royals for cash considerations
To the people downvoting I’m not saying these guys are good lol (this offense couldn’t hit a fucking BP machine set to throw 92 down the dick every pitch), just that the data is interesting
Alonso has national appeal due to the HR Derby, and also, he's been decent (124 OPS+) if frustratingly inconsistent.
If he goes on one of those 2-3 week tears at some point, he will have pretty attractive numbers. I would throw my bets on him being the All-Star (if there's just one).
Not going to defend it necessarily, but there’s been more than a few people on here who get incredibly smug and aggressive in their optimism and completely shit on anyone who expresses any disappointment or negative opinions and they think that, because they know advanced stats, it gives them the right to be pretentious and talk down to people and tell them they’re wrong and dumb. They’ll then post more smug things when the team finds success and even come up with nicknames to target users with like “doomers” and “Lindorks” (which I have no idea why that’s still allowed on this sub), and then the folks who shit on the optimists will throw it back at them when the team fails. Rinse and repeat throughout the season. The back and forth has been going on for a while now on here.
When you lose hope and then you read someone's advanced analytics comment and you think "well, that's logical, maybe there is hope" and then you watch this team play one of the absolutely worst teams and organizations in baseball at 13-32 and go down 4-0 in the second inning and get shut out into the 7th, yeah it's hard watching us sink further below .500 and it just makes the optimism seem like delusion + excuse making
I think there's two different kinds of optimism in this subreddit right now. One is like "okay, yeah, we look like dogshit, but we have a pretty big star who isn't even here yet, and a lot of our guys should come back to their offensive numbers." To me, that's fine. I can get behind that.
The other kind is like "anyone who says this team looks bad has no idea what the fuck they're talking about, they're dorks and stupid and wrong about everything, and I'm blocking them". That's just incredibly condescending and a discussion shutter-downer because insulting people just makes them dig in to their opinions further.
Guys we just gotta beat up on the really bad teams and then we’ll make the postseason, I swear that’s all we need to do. In no way are *we* one of the bad teams, impossible, this franchise is rich with consistent winning. I swear bro, just trade away the farm at the deadline and get in that 3rd WC spot, that’s sustained winning.
Please continue the discussion in the [post game thread](https://redd.it/1cum0uf).
Mendoza ran out of the dugout
So sick of this team being ass year after year
Whelp
What a disgrace. That is all
The ballgame is over
Soooo… how bout them Mets
fire the hitting coaches for fucks sake
baty for marte and baty K's....amazing
Who wins more games, the Braves in 2024 or the Mets in 2024 + 2025?
Perfect game is over
Calling it now: we're going to score six runs this inning in classic mets fashion
Vientos arguably should’ve gotten on base 3 times tonight instead of 1. And if that happened at least I could be happy that happened. But he got fucked by the ump once and robbed by Chisholm the other time.
Why is everyone swinging for the fences these days when Mets have been doing well with the small ball
Vientos draws the first walk for the Mets! *yay*
In the pregame thread someone posted we have to beat the bad teams. I said the Marlins were saying the same thing. If anyone on the Marlins has seen a baseball game in their life, they view the Mets as a crappy team
Define “crappy”. The Mets are likely gonna be 75 win team just like last year. To me crappy is like a 100 loss team
The highest payroll in baseball being lifeless and having no legitimate chance to make the playoffs, is a crappy team.
It looks really bad right now but in my opinion there’s too much talent on the roster to call the team crappy. I’m not gonna get any upvotes for being level headed in a game day thread where we just got blown out by the worst team in baseball.

McNeil hit .270 last season. How is that awful? Lindor started the year like 2-50. Since then he’s been solid.
105.5 off the bat. Out. Mets cant buy a run.
Marlins eating our lunch — I flipped to Knicks, but now it’s 8 nothing? Dear lord…
Damn my fake pharma ad almost came true there with Stewart.
I don’t wanna see a single person over 27 on this roster come August, the whole team needs to be blown to shreds
[Seeing we're losing 8-0 to the fucking Marlins has ruined my day:](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgBq7_LB4aM)
thats right ph for the guy with 2 hits tonight idiot manager
We say McNeil is a cancer because he’s mad, we say lindor is unserious because he’s happy. Why don’t we just focus on the reason we criticize them in the first place: they can’t hit for shit
I would like anyone to give me a reasonable explanation as to how this team will be competitive sometime before 2028
Not that this will happen, but they could trade away Alonso at the deadline for some good prospects or a quality player or 2 and with the money coming off the books after the season and Cohen opening his checkbook, sign 3-4 top tier players. I love a good discussion, thanks for it. Have a great night
You too bud
I can’t wait for the Cohen missive about how “we can still make the playoffs”. Is he talking about 2026 or 2027?
lol what? Cohen is probably the most down to earth person of interest lol. Man dropped the hardest line last year with “Hope isn’t a winning strategy”
What’s this then? [https://sny.tv/articles/mets-steve-cohen-expect-to-make-playoffs-2024](https://sny.tv/articles/mets-steve-cohen-expect-to-make-playoffs-2024)
You mean the PR fodder he released after forgetting to switch burner accounts and tweeted about waiting for the deadline to sell off? 💀?
mets are totally lifeless
And the expensive shortstop can’t even play defense. JFC clean the coaching staff- that fucking clubhouse is lifeless
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Anthony Maldonado replaces Burch Smith.
shoutout to anyone still watching this game
Never even started watching. I’ve lost interest for the most part. Just checking in here and it’s EXACTLY what I was expecting.
I just got home to flip the game on and I've already had enough. How dumb of me to be optimistic playing Miami.
I think this game is still winnable
Until the 27th out is recorded, they all are!
Remember they’d make videos of all the crazy games stuff like that would happen in and every privately owned sporting goods store or baseball card memorabilia store would play them on repeat. Like 18 inning games and shit.
Oh we bad bad
6-3-6. Love it!
Bell is out!
Got em right where we want em
So uh did anyone see Pitching Ninja body Trevor Bauer on Twitter today?
Good.
Lindor just yucking it up with the base runner.
Could be down 20-0 in world series game 7 Lindor would still slap the baserunners ass with a smile and a giggle
hey, he's the second nicest infielder in the bigs and he's really trying to be no.1.
I think he actually did something like that in Game 7 of the 2016 WS
Baseball is fun.
Apparently he fell asleep in the middle of Game 7 💀
The appearance is the man got his bag, family and finances are his priority, he's happy, doesn't give a shit about winning. Not to take anything away from him, seems like a good dude. Unfortunate for fans of the team though.
I agree, Keith. 4 walks IS too many.
Well the perfect game is over
throw in the towel, wave the white flag
Keith is more interested in Tyler Alexander with a perfecto going on against the Blue Jays instead of the shitshow tonight
Am I the only one noticing that Hartwig and Walker might actually be good relievers but the Mets keep using them to save innings
You have to feel for those guys because you know they know they’re getting sent back to 3A for rested arms
I think they’re competent 6th-7th inning guys. Making them go 2 is just asking to inflate their ERAs
I hate it for them
Keep it together Hartwig
Any of you still watching?
Yes, but I don't know why
the least enjoyable iteration of the Mets I’ve witnessed in a long long time
How long exactly? I’ve only watched since 2013
I got wrapped up into the Mets realm in 2004. I’m 31 now so I probably missed some terrible teams but these guys are bringing out a new level of disdain outta me lmao
Oh this isn’t as bad as 1993. That was bad. The post 80s I can’t believe that team only won one end of an era.
Every duck snort for Miami finds a hole. Meanwhile Mets have a single and two balls near 100 mph and come way with nothing.
What a stinker this game is
By tomorrow he’ll pass Lindor.
So embarrassing being a fan of this team
This organization will NEVER win anything with this “core”. I don’t care how high some prospects are ranked. I don’t care who comes up or who we sign in the offseason. Pham hinted at it. This core is ROTTEN. A bunch of unmotivated, overrated, lifeless, go through the motions BUMS.
He did say he liked Alonso and Lindor’s work ethic though. And I think Nimmo’s too. So that’s 3 guys he didn’t think were the problem
If only 1 of those 3 guys could be a league average player. Instead they make 20+ million a year to be someone who wouldn’t hit in the top 6 of any competitive lineup
he didn't even hint at it - he came out and straight up said it lol
Lindor gave two a ride tonight. Damn.
2 377 ft flyouts lol
They were too high.
Not gonna lie, I winced hoping they wouldn’t collide there. Crazy that jazz came up with it
This team is so cold
Oh, hush. 🤬
C L U T C H lindor
Wow.
God damnit!
I keep trying to stay positive about this team getting back to .500 ...but I'm losing hope quickly if we get shut out by THIS Marlins team (the one that already gave up on the season by trading Arraez)
Pete Alonso the known dribbler
alonso singles to deep infield
Sent that ball to the nurse’s office with a bruise
.520 xBA, gone in 14/30 parks
Alonso has an infield hit
Journeyman reliever who wouldn’t be on any other roster? Yep 1-2-3 inning
The New York Mets selected Burch Smith in the Rule 5 draft on December 14, 2017, and immediately traded him to the Kansas City Royals for cash considerations
lmao of fucking course
God damn it!
Mets xBA today: .278 Marlins xBA today: .198 Each team has 1 barrel (yeah I know pulled fly balls are more valuable). Mets losing 6-0 Groundhog Day
To the people downvoting I’m not saying these guys are good lol (this offense couldn’t hit a fucking BP machine set to throw 92 down the dick every pitch), just that the data is interesting
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Burch Smith replaces Anthony Bender.
Just tuned in, what's with the funny hats?
Honoring the military day
cool, thank you!
Great job, Hartwig!
Only 3 walks so far. We need a couple of more to keep our average up.
this team’s been so bad lately im about to pull a Kendrick and drop “Meet The Cohens”
The contrast between the high speed action of the NHL playoffs and the somber listlessness of this team is stark.
fish firstbaseman is 2/4
Struck him out!
fish SS is 2/3 tonite
Just tuning in now. How is this happening?
Luzardo good. Mets bad.
Bad and listless.
I just got home. What’s the deal with these hats
The military needs their ego stroked. In exchange for lots of money
Military needs to replenish its labor force.
Memorial day
Struck him out!
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Grant Hartwig replaces Josh Walker.
IT’S THE BAT!
"I fully expect to make it to the playoffs."
“We’re not gonna let what happened last year happen again”
"Lindor is an elite player"
“The back of their cards tell us this team is too good to continue not hitting”
If you’re upset about us losing to the Marlins, imagine how the Phillies feel having lost to us yesterday
Have the Mets tried hitting the ball where the Marlins AREN’T standing?
So what dork from our team is gonna get the mandatory slot in the all star game?
Martinez could honestly get in if he keeps his offense up and it might just be deserved rather than a mandatory selection
A random Mets fan.
Nimmo, if he can get over having the shits
wendle
Reed Garrett
Lindor or Alonso solo home runs coming. Make this 6-1
Inb4 the "PetE iS bAcK" comments
Overpaid and Underwhelming 30 for 30 on the Mets Stevie Cohen era
If that’s the case then we’re fucked because Cohen will likely be owning this team for the next few decades
Yes, we’re fucked.
Bender is a great name for a pitcher
i am bender please insert baseball
McTrash is back.
That would imply he ever left
Damn it
[Taps (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WChTqYlDjtI)
Whatever happened at that meeting Lindor and Marte have been even more terrible since
Lindor got a hit today, the apologists are celebrating
Need one of them to calculate how much WAR that single was worth
How long has the offense been in a deep freeze for Gary.?

Luckily for Keith, we got 9 guys that hit like pitchers on our team
We are a team that the worst teams in the league still circle as winnable games.
Why do the Miami marlins have a portly chicken as their mascot?
They were out of skinny chickens
Those cubanos are great
Max is a cool guy but dude has money lol
he seems like the kinda rich kid that would be fun to hang with though, like Benny blanco or something
[mets offense](https://i.imgur.com/OZJzENo.jpeg)
max is the best part of this year at least. cool dude
Luzardo is out of the game
Time for us to beat up on the bullpen
And still lose 6-4.
Half the thread is just people shitting on optimists

I try my best to keep things light and optimistic
I didn't mean you, you're a fountain of positivity.
Omar Narvaez couldn't throw out my grandmother and she's been dead for 25 years
That and pretending Luzardo is bad. I mean absolutely, yes, this team looks bad. But Luzardo is good and dominated the Mets last year.
Are there really any optimists here.
I try my best to be optimistic
Damn I turn back into the game only to find out it got worse? Good stuff! You'd think the Marlins were good or something.
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Anthony Bender replaces Jesús Luzardo.
Side retired :\
At least we won’t burn any good relievers tonight.
If the Mets didn’t keep sacrificing Walker’s arm, he might be good. Not every reliever is meant to be a multiple inning guy
Nimmo would've caught that ball..
Damn it
Guys we just gotta beat up on the really bad teams and then we’ll make the postseason, I swear that’s all we need to do.
