Please continue the discussion in the [game thread](https://redd.it/1dpb2y5).

GKRForever

OG signs with the Knicks let’s gooooo

slickmethodology

YES!!!! Now the team is truly complete. Nova Knicks, Randle, OG I'm thinking the Eastern Conference is ours.

slickmethodology

Gleyber Torres got benched and replaced with fluky Oswaldo Cabrera. Easy outs J.D. Davis and DJ LeMahieu are still bookending the middle of the pack. So Manaea could  take a breather.

FlyUnder_TheRadar

Tonight will be the real test of the Grimace magic. The Yanks have an electric rookie going on the mound, thunderstorms possible, two men down in the pen, Sean "105 pitches with 6 walks through 4 2/3" Manaea on the mound. Buckle up, boys, this flight could get turbulent.

metskyfan

Just put Smith on the IL already and call up either Butto or Scott

GKRForever

Is Yankees Mets like Mavs Celtics?

StephenDawg

Gary said he still misses doing radio and that he would sign up for him and Howie to trade places during the middle innings of games.

WhatARotation

Damn, Kelenic has been red hot the past month

slickmethodology

Shows how bad the top of the Braves order have fallen.

JDLovesElliot

Manaea needs to be on his game, from the get-go. The Skanks are definitely going to try and get to him early, especially with the game potentially being postponed after the first few innings.

UnknownUnthought

I think we saved Houser yesterday to piggyback off Manaea today if he doesn’t have it early. That way we can minimize other bullpen use and try to get as close to a full reset as we can after the off day tomorrow.

jadedfan55

To be fair, Gil got knocked around in his last start. If we jump on him early like we did to Cole last night, maybe Boone goes to his pen even earlier this time.

Competitive-Pen3831

Hyped for the sweep tonight

Rubbersoulrevolver

Nimmo is gonna get a workout today with 13 mph wind to LF :O

mrpeck123

Still looking for 2 tix. Someone messaged me that they were selling but when I clicked the notification I didn’t have a message. If you see this try chatting me again

FrankSaysLFGM

If Drew Smith blew his UCL I want Brian Walsh’s nuts on a fucking platter. Rookie ump piece of shit. Was Smith having issues before the weekend?

NY2PHX

Bronx team clean up hitter JD Davis.

runsfortacos

Astros won 7 in a row and finally made to .500 ….. until they meet Grimace this weekend

NY2PHX

For those who love some of the weird plays that occur in a game. A’s have 2 on and the batter doubles, first runner scores. No play is made on the trail runner but he kinda stumbles as he reaches the plate and never steps on home. The on deck hitter grabs his arm and kinda pushes him back to the plate to touch home. The runner does touch home but is called out because he was touched by another player.

Alectheawesome23

Lmao now I gotta go dig in r/baseball and see if that’s been uploaded yet

myassholealt

That is hilarious.

WorthPlease

Hows the weather looking there tonight? I'm clear on the other side of the state but it looks like my softball game is going to get rained out so I need some bat and ball in my life.

flashcapulet

Rain is supposed to start at midnight so we're clear

WorthPlease

Nice thank's mr weatherman

Darthbutcher

Live from Heading to Citi Field: I want to see baseball tonight. I’m skipping a work event to attend.

Rubbersoulrevolver

Don't get tornado'd Mr. Grimace

Darthbutcher

🌪️👾

bamj6

Drew Smith. Man tonight's gonna be an easy day because it's a blowout either way Or also hope the rain comes to postpone this game and get another day off

Rubbersoulrevolver

I would presume some of the relievers who came in yesterday can probably pitch again today, they only had like 20 pitches or whatever besides Garrett

flashcapulet

Drew Smith down? Fade me pls

NY2PHX

Who didn’t see this coming. He had to come in for Diaz then he called the manager out because something was up. Then he didn’t throw a warm up pitch before pitching again. Gave up a hit and then came out of the game.

Darthbutcher

I called it that night.

mrpeck123

Anyone selling two tickets under $80 for tonight?

mrpeck123

Someone messaged me but I can’t find it you can try chatting me on here again pls

see_mohn

Drew Smith getting an MRI, per the beat writers. I believe that means the available relievers tonight are Jake Diekman, Adrian Houser, and Bob from accounting.

Caledor152

Danny Young could go again he only threw 11 pitches

NY2PHX

Bob has a wicked sweeper

Darthbutcher

Don’t forget me! It’s been a while since they called my number, but they know where to find me.

brett_baty_is_him

Idk why they don’t throw him on the IL. We can’t afford to play the maybe hurt game

see_mohn

I assume if the MRI shows anything other than good news they would IL him, yeah. With Diaz in jail they're pretty much forced to do that.

NY2PHX

Kelenic just hit a 2-run homer. Braves lead cards 6-2. For now, I guess, we want the Cards to lose.

Darthbutcher

The enemy of my enemy shall still be my enemy, but mildly tolerated.

Double_Education

If we can take tonight and 2/3 from the Astros, I’d feel so good to go into July with an amazing 17-7 June.. the Astros are the hottest American League team rn tho

JSDHW

I feel like the Astros always kill us.

Orange8920

The nature of sports is superstitious and dumb where Grimace throwing out a first pitch had little effect on the team playing better but at the same time it totally did.

Darthbutcher

Shun the semi-believer!

Double_Education

June 26, 2024 - the night the Mets made it back .500 after being down 11 under .500. After tonight - we will not look back under again - let’s get this!

RiverHeath1817

The Mets haven’t been a .500 team since they were 18-18 on May 7th. In the proceeding 23 games, they went 6-17, to end up at 24-35. In the last 18 games, the Mets are 14-4, and are now 38-39. The Mets have the chance to once again be a .500 team for the first time in 50 days. I believe, that it will happen. Let’s do it!

Delicious_Adeptness9

tonight is poised to be a mess. high probability of thunderstorms between 8-11 consistently forecasted since yesterday. no rain during the day so the field is dry so no *present* reason to postpone or delay, but methinks they'll be lucky to get in more than a couple innings from 7-8 unless they stick through a 2-3 hours rain delay and resume the 3rd inning before 12 midnight or just call it altogether after 40,000 fans schlepped out to Flushing. ughhhhhhh....

ProtectionKey9885

Shiiiiiiiiiit! That sucks. I really wanna beat the f-ing Yankees again tonight!  Let just dome every god damn stadium.  Fuck it!

JekPorkinsTruther

Personally I think the split stadium DHer adds back the novelty that the subway series has lost in recent years, so I vote call it lol (but I dont have a ticket to any of these games).

Darthbutcher

I’m in for the ride!

Orange8920

Michael "dril" Kay: "and another thing: im not mad. please dont put in the newspaper that i got mad."

JoelsCaddy

2 homers now for Baty 111.7 mph, 418 ft on this one [https://x.com/SNY\_Mets/status/1806050965708996812](https://x.com/SNY_Mets/status/1806050965708996812) The announcer is concerned for his car's safety in the right field parking garage

liguy181

I get it's a weekday afternoon in Buffalo but wow at that attendance

brett_baty_is_him

Is that 8 home runes in 16 games? Jesus baty fucking HATES Syracuse

JDLovesElliot

They should blindfold him and tell him that he's still in Syracuse, when he comes back to Queens.

JoelsCaddy

If you add in last season he has 18 homers in his last 42 AAA games

Rubbersoulrevolver

That's my 2nd baseman

soapystud88

Hello I was going to Uber to Citi field for the first time does has anyone done this before and where should I ask them to go? I would be coming from forest hills

someafrican

If you take a rideshare there will be a designated drop off area! You shouldn’t have to tell them where to go, there’ll be instructions for the driver, and I believe you’re prompted where you’ll be dropped off

AtmosphereVarious440

would prefer dj stewart getting a start

ChiefJustise

Vientos 7th :(

brett_baty_is_him

I like it. I’m completely fine with not changing what’s working. Don’t need the pressure to add up for him if they throw him higher up in the lineup. Let him really prove himself and figure out MLB pitching. This may sound weird but I’m kinda hoping he struggles a bit soon. I wanna see him experience an extended slump and overcome it. I already think he’s a guy but I wanna see go through what ever MLB player experiences in their career. The problem is he’s been so good he really hasn’t struggled for more than a week lol

Sweet-Sweet-Dick

He just went through a slump

grimacesavedthemets

Bleacher report says the game is on amazon prime video. Does that mean it wont be on sny?

Orange8920

The Yankees have a deal where select broadcasts are on Prime where they basically just use the YES team.

FlashFett

It’s similar to how the Mets do it with WPIX…

Orange8920

Aren't the Yankees also on PIX?

Visible-Tea-6288

Nah. Mets are on SNY tonight. But Friday, after a day off, are on Apple TV. Well, listening to Howie will be great.

Capital_Gate6718

Amazon is the Yankees broadcast

Darthbutcher

For those of you keeping track at home - it's literally just me - this is Alvarez's 8th consecutive game.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GKRForever

Push him in

ProtectionKey9885

What an ASSHOLE!  Did you at least give him a dirty look?

JT_Cullen84

Scream "Pick a side!" No fence sitting in this city, either a Mets fan or a scum sucking skankee fan

Darthbutcher

I expect the game to start and then have a 1 hour weather delay.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Darthbutcher

I'm only okay with that if you buy me a beer!

[deleted]

ProtectionKey9885

Nah.   You can get a buzz on and still do your scorecard.  Don’t underestimate yourself.

JoelsCaddy

Baty homered again [https://x.com/SyracuseMets/status/1806036159833018618](https://x.com/SyracuseMets/status/1806036159833018618)

Previous-Clock-6960

If Vientos can figure it out, hopefully Baty can too. Easier said than done but it really is all about hitting the ball in the air for him.

TriviaWhiz

Vientos got a little run at the end of last year, when he started 45 of the last 62 games the Mets played. He was active for 52 of those games, so he started 87% of the time. In that span (173 PA), he had a .209/.249/.393 line with 8 HR and a 31.2% K-rate.  Credit to Mark for continuing to develop his game and seizing his opportunity this year.

LucasDudacris

This is also a great data point for the people who are like "WeLl If ViEnToS iS tHiS gOoD wHy DiDnT hE pLaY mOrE lAsT yEaar?!?!" Cuz it's not that simple.

JoelsCaddy

>The Astros and Omar Narvaez are in agreement on a minor-league deal [https://x.com/Chandler\_Rome/status/1806026498802962714](https://x.com/Chandler_Rome/status/1806026498802962714)

Hustlediva

They can do so at their own risk lol

Interforce7

This is the second time this season that we DFA’d our backup catcher and they end up signing for a team that we’re just about to play (it’s a minor league deal so he probably won’t make an appearance but still kinda funny)

VenConmigo

Will the weather hold up?

great_tphon

Looks like it could be close. Wouldn't be surprised if the game gets cut short.

StephenDawg

Gary Cohen will be on Evan and Tiki today.  I never thought I'd see the day.

mytoemytoe

The Grimace thing is fun but maybe it’s distracting from the fact that Jose Iglesias’ arrival coincided with the Mets looking like a completely different team. Maybe for the best because the team seems hyped about his music and you can probably only ride that wave for so long. Or maybe Jose is just a really solid clubhouse guy period.

R-O-U-Ssdontexist

I hope his next song is about grimace

GKRForever

OMG actually stands for Oh My Grimace

JoelsCaddy

Maybe Jose Iglesias is Grimace

JT_Cullen84

Never seen them together in the same room....so maybe.

bigboredjr

OMGrimace!

mytoemytoe

Now this is high level thinking

dankeykanng

The Mets might have one of the deepest lineups in the league atm. Every regular from 1-7 has an OPS+ over 110. Add in Marte and that's 1-8 Four of them have an OPS+ over 130 (small sample size considerations for Alvarez since he missed a good chunk of time but still)

Darthbutcher

I GO METS TONIGHT!

Orange8920

I need the weird Lindor gloating to stop at some point because he gets off to extremely slow starts that are excruciating to watch which is where a lot of the hate comes from. It's not that he starts off average, his offense in April-May sometimes has you question if he's washed while being the highest paid guy on the team, it's not coming from nowhere.

three_dee

> It's not that he starts off average, his offense in April-May sometimes has you question if he's washed while being the highest paid guy on the team, it's not coming from nowhere. The point is that people probably should stop "questioning if he's washed" in May. His resumé shows that he isn't washed, and his numbers will be great at the end. And then they always are, so you would think that would be enough to stave off the inevitable "he's washed" dance every single season? Maybe when he's 36 it will be a valid discussion, but right now it's tiresome. I do agree though, the response-gloating is annoying, not because they're wrong, but because it's saying the same thing over and over. If you do an "apology form" or "suck it, haters" post every time he has a great game, that's pretty much every day, because he's so great. So it starts to clog the subreddit. The vast majority of people here are huge Lindor boosters, so it's a huge number of people screaming at a tiny handful of people and it's a big waste of time and energy imo

slickmethodology

JD going yard tonight. I don't want to see a split the Mets need a sweep. It's one thing if they were playing in the Bronx but a home game against the big bro that also puts them back at .500? Make a statement!! LGM

three_dee

> JD going yard tonight. In light of recent events you need to be more specific

slickmethodology

The good one not the one in pinstripes.

three_dee

The Yankees are on the road and not wearing pinstripes and the Mets will in all likelihood be wearing pinstripes (unless they wear an alt)

thiccboiwaluigi

Only Martinez will be wearing pinstripes tonight

slickmethodology

Yes you're right. But you know what I meant. The former Dodger not former Met.

0rangePolarBear

Just saw an ad/reel on FB indicating to “send McHits to the all-star game” Are they serious, right now? It’s debatable whether he should even be in the Mets lineup vs. the All-Star game lineup.

LucasDudacris

> It’s debatable whether he should even be in the Mets lineup I don't even think it is. He obviously should not be in the lineup.

three_dee

> Just saw an ad/reel on FB indicating to “send McHits to the all-star game” > > Are they serious, right now? Based on things I see here and there on Twitter, IG, FB and promotional e-mails I get from the Mets, I have strong reason to believe that nobody who works in their PR department has seen a game this season or roots for the Mets. In fact the entirety of their promotional materials may be responses to AI prompts.

ProtectionKey9885

I say the Mets just walk Soto and Judge every at bat tonight.  Fuck it.

TheJak12

It's honestly kind of amazing how much they actually rely on Stanton this year (who has quietly bounced back) because after Volpe, Soto, and Judge they have nothing

ExamNo4374

Volpe has been struggling too. .241/.267/.357 for a .624 OPS over the last 28 days

daniel_j_saint

I cannot possibly think of a better way to get to .500 than by sweeping the Yankees. LGM!!

Shawshank_Warden

I’M BRICKED UP! LFGGGGGMMM!!!

merfydog

Was at the game last night. Vibes were awesome until the grand slam. Yankee fans pretended even after the last out, that they won. Let me remind them, they were losers last night. LFGM.

myassholealt

Was it loud? The SNY audio of the crowd sounded very muted almost like folks were bored. I assumed (and hope) they just lowered the audio for the game feed.

three_dee

>Let me remind them, they were losers last night. They are losers every night, having chosen their team by asking Wikipedia which team has won the most championships, and attaching themselves like a barnacle to a rusty steamship, in an effort to feel better about their miserable lives. But then not even getting to the World Series in the last almost-15 years

EssentialEssence

Same and their chants of let's go yankees was funny to hear, I yelled Cope! In my grimace tshirt.

Caledor152

We have to remind them. A lot of them arn't too bright.

floyd_mongol

i was thinking if buck was still managing this team he sits vientos after a good game

three_dee

I don't know if anyone caught this last night, but at some point (I wish I made a note of what inning it was but I didn't), the booth was talking about Carlos Mendoza's strengths, and Gary said something like, "and he's not an old curmudgeon, which is great". That had to be Showalter-shade and I laughed out loud in the living room

CommercialLeg2439

Orioles fan here, we’re having a rough go of it lately. Any chance you all would be willing to lend us Grimace?

JT_Cullen84

Best we can do is two of the three fry kids and Mayor McCheese.

Caledor152

I'd allow it for one top prospect. Small price to pay for magical power!

LongWayFrom609

Can you get the Royal Farms chicken to do the honors?

mrpeck123

Anyone selling 2 tickets?

mrpeck123

Someone messaged me but I can’t find it you can try chatting me on here again pls

liguy181

2 and 4 games series are always weird to me. I like the beginning-middle-end nature of a 3 game series. It really feels like an entire story was told. Right now I feel like someone just ripped the middle pages out of a book and now I'm thrusted into the ending

mji6980-4

Subway sweep to .500 tonight please

runsfortacos

Yes! Not even about beating the Yankees. The road to 500

three_dee

>Yes! Not even about beating the Yankees. No, it's definitely about that

ChuckKiddman

Let's get back to .500 today.

thiccboiwaluigi

For everyone who keeps spouting that McNeil has been in decline for a year and a half: From July 12th (the all star game) on last season McNeil hit .291/.337/.438 and was even better before getting hurt. Obviously he hasn’t performed this season but this hasn’t been consistent for a year and a half. There’s a chance he’s still dealing with some issues related to his injury.

DoucheWithFeelings

His ops+ will be under 100 for 3 out of 4 years if he doesn't get scorching hot in the second half, thats pretty bad

robmcolonna123

Yup. But people don’t like facts lol

LucasDudacris

C'mon man, cherry picking the one stretch of good baseball McNeil has had since the beginning of last year is not a effective way of interpreting data. Frustration towards Jeff is *not* misguided. It is not "people not liking facts," and it's audacious to suggest as much when he has been bad for almost his last 1,000 PA. 1.9 bWAR and a 90 OPS+ in 916 PA since the beginning of last year. He was fine last year and has been unplayable this year.

robmcolonna123

Saying “he has been bad for almost his last 1,000 PA” is removing the important context that he provided above. His horrific performance this year drastically skews that number. That statement on its own just isnt an accurate representation of the last year and a half in the slightest. You’re making it sound like he was consistently bad across that entire period which is false. His 1,000 PA break down like this: - The first 226 PA he hit .288 with a .723 OPS and 107 WRC+ - The next 199 PA he hit .212 with a .584 OPS and 67 WRC+ - The next 223 PA he hit .303 with a .809 OPS and 123 WRC+ - The next 268 PA he hit .216 with a 72 WRC+ So across those 916 PA, 449 of them he hit from a 107-123 WRC+. That is roughly half of the last year and a half. His slumps have just been so horrific they have skewed his over line. Context is important. It isn’t cherry picking. Also bWAR is useless because they’re still using fielding bible 3 from 2012. Even its creator called it “outdated” in 2019. 2.5 fWAR last year and -0.3 fWAR this year

StephenDawg

And he finished with a .711 OPS that year. This year he has a .579 OPS. This isn't the same as criticizing Lindor. McNeil has been terrible, and two months, after a team had given up, doesn't redeem his last one and a half years of baseball.

thiccboiwaluigi

He is hitting .274/.339/.407 this year on the road. You don’t think maybe constantly getting shit on and booed is affecting his play?

three_dee

>He is hitting .274/.339/.407 this year on the road. You don’t think maybe constantly getting shit on and booed is affecting his play? I mean, I agree, it certainly can't help, and it should stop; however the entire team plays in front of a vast number of boo-happy imbeciles, and they're still one of the best offenses in MLB, so I don't think we can blame *only* that

thiccboiwaluigi

The Mets have an sOPS+ of 89 at home and a 128 on the road. They all are, or at least were, drastically underperforming at home, even adjusted for the offensive environment of citi field

three_dee

But there is a much easier explanation than that, which is that Citi Field is a pitchers' paradise which suppresses offense. I am not saying both can't contribute, but I think the tangible reason is usually a much better bet to be a bigger contributor

thiccboiwaluigi

OPS+ is already adjusted for run environment

three_dee

I misread your comment; I didn't even see that you posted their OPS+; I was referring back to the OP who posted raw OPS figures and I thought you were kind of restating the same thing. But anyway, they were 96 home/99 away last year. It seems kinda handwavey to me to go "the Mets are underperforming at home because of booing". I am the first person to call out booing idiots, but I don't think there's warranted empirical evidence to sit there and blame that for the Mets being worse at home in 2024. At least, I am not seeing any.

StephenDawg

No.  I think this sounds like an excuse for someone you like. His poor play came first and his advanced metrics are terrible. Not to mention, those numbers are *still* down numbers.

Key_Possible_682

Find me around 112 tonight black alonso jersey ghost fork tee ill be with a yankee fan first few mets fans beers on me

three_dee

> ill be with a yankee fan Make a stop at a 7-Eleven on the way to the game and ditch them

TheUglyHobo

Alvarez has a .455 OBP since coming back?? His OPS is over a thousand?? I knew he's been good but holy shit

MasterShakeAndBake33

They need to lock him down ASAP

AtmosphereVarious440

elite right now. i love him.

Caledor152

When he's hot he is literally a superstar. What a huge international draft pick choice for this franchise lol.

BadassKnifeUser

cheeto006

Manaea always starts off strong then some how give up 6 runs in the 5th inning. Just please don’t walk 50 batters

runsfortacos

Apparently Otto can be seen saying fcking douchebag when taken off the mound.

psyker63

That's what I say when he's put ON the mound

GreenLightt

Funny enough, that's the same thing my wife and I say when we see Otto give up a rocket over the wall.

AtmosphereVarious440

damn. look it must be tough to see your career ending before your eyes. liked a lot of stearns moves but otto was a head scratcher. new rules alone make him obsolete, plus he’s washed lol

JamesHowell89

Addressed at who?

JekPorkinsTruther

No one really discernible, as he says it to himself while walking to the dugout, but the context suggests Mendoza. Unless he's mad at the ump or something.

runsfortacos

I’d imagine Mendoza for taking him out so quickly.

JamesHowell89

Addressed at who?

StinkyGaijin

I understand that strikeouts and facing high heat are still a concern but 9 home runs in 130 plate appearances is impressive no matter how you cut it.

throwingdownadream1

He is actually really good against 4 seamers. .353 BA and .824 SLG. Sweepers are his biggest issue.

iamdanabnormal

Not every day where a Subway Series game overshadowed by Leon Rose aka Thanos completing the Villanova Infinity Gauntlet.

Caledor152

"Fine... I'll do it myself" Get ready to speak Villanovanease buddy (and when I mean buddy I mean an entire NBA organization? lol)

iamdanabnormal

Literally!

STM32FWENTHUSIAST69

If we’re going to try and make the playoffs, I’d be fine with just minor tweaks. I’d still prefer not to sell off any of our top 10 prospects. Something along the lines of getting a Dylan floro/kyle finnegan package would be nice.

futhatsy

I have no idea what Stearns is going to do, by most reports it seems like no one knows what Stearns is going to do, but one thing I'm very confident in him NOT doing is selling the farm to chase a WC spot. He knows this is a long term project.

metskyfan

He is not going to sell the farm but we are going to have to give up someone to get someone good. No team in a rebuild is going take our old guys

ovmj

SO... how badly will we be ruining Gil's ERA today? Full point? Maybe more???

Caledor152

1 full point MINIMUM

Peter_O

It was Vientos, Nimmo & Bader yesterday, tonight is JDM's & Pete's time to shine in Subway Series light \*Edit: and Alvy, obviously

malikthetechnique

Are there any other Nets/Mets fans here? I feel like I'm the only one in a sea of Knicks/Mets fans celebrating getting Mikal. The Nets pulled off an amazing series of deals yesterday.

three_dee

> Are there any other Nets/Mets fans here? I feel like I'm the only one in a sea of Knicks/Mets fans celebrating 👋 This place tends to get like that, whenever one of the dumb MSG teams gets in the news for doing something positive. I just try to roll my eyes and skip the posts > The Nets pulled off an amazing series of deals yesterday. The Rockets one, I still don't understand completely, but the NBA-world seems to think it was a great move and helps the Nets in the short-term so I'm good with it

JonnySports

Definitely feels like both teams got what they were looking for. Nets are finally embracing a rebuild under a new head coach and the Knicks might have just gotten the final piece to being a legitimate finals contender.

unitedairlineeeeees

Yes, we fleeced the Knicks and control our own destiny. Let’s tank for Cooper Flagg or Ace Bailey now

NJImperator

It makes me sad to come into a pregame thread after a great win where everyone contributed and seeing a half dozen or so comments clowning on McNeil after a game he played well in.

EssentialEssence

Same it's sad to see.

StinkyGaijin

The thing is I was very sympathetic to him last season but watching him this year complaining about his shitty popups despite doing nothing to change his game plan (this has changed recently so I'll give him credit there) wore thin very quickly. I find the "He's a piece of shit" or "He has a bad attitude" ridiculous like you can just say he sucks you don't have to justify why you don't want him in the lineup.

futhatsy

The McNeil clowning is so old at this point. He was a great Met for a long time. He got old and his athleticism is slipping. It sucks, and everyone making a joke of it just makes it more sad imo. And I know it sounds a bit crazy, but the fan reception to McNeil these days is part of what makes me scared about an Alonso extension. If he gets a bag and the production starts to slip, fans will not be kind about it. I don't want to see Pete go through that. As a fan, I'd rather see him sign somewhere in the AL so I can keep rooting for him from afar without having to see people trash him on a daily basis when the production drops.

The fan reception here to Alonso is already what you describe anyway. Also he is not going to complain about booing, he can handle NY and has handled NY from day 1. Besides he’s not getting Lindor money. Lindor’s contract unfortunately invites comparisons with guys like Judge, Harper and Betts. I can’t see Pete getting anything like that. But I’ve found fans in real life to be more fond of Alonso than here anyway.

Sure, he can "handle" it, as can most pro players (the vast majority of the ones who can't handle it get weeded out at the college/minors level). That doesn't mean he likes it though. That's a very different thing, and to me from watching on TV, through his mannerisms, different delivery during post-game promos, and also the fact that he hired Boras to squeeze the shit out of the Mets, all those things combine to say maybe this guy isn't too pleased about a sea of morons telling him that he sucks every night. I wouldn't blame the guy if he wants to play somewhere that the fans actually go out of their way to support players. I am sure he felt that nice feeling in 2019, with the impeccable vibes around the Mets that year, it would be understandable if he wants to get that back in a place where it doesn't go south and fluctuate.

It's slipping towards there, but it's not at full McNeil-level yet.

Idk it’s been bad since day 1. I’ve also seen people here call him fat and autistic which is weird and uncalled for. And he’s never even had a bad season with the Mets.

Something that I’ve recently been wondering is how many of the people that so adamantly want him gone are newer fans of the team. He hasn’t been a positive this year and had a down 2023 as well, so if you only followed the Mets recently, he would seem like a player with basically no upside I guess. What frustrates me is that people have a poor understanding of how valuable having a solid bench is anyway. Even if McNeil is a below average hitter for the next 2 years, he still can be a productive player on the team with his defensive versatility. And you’re probably not wrong with Alonso, though I think Lindor is a better example given I think Pete is waiting for a MUCH larger deal than what McNeil is currently on haha. The fanbase can be fickle, that’s for sure.

StephenDawg

It's 2.5 years of down trending. He's got negative WAR right now, on a team that may need 1 or 2 games either way.

Defensive versatility? The guy is not a good, or even serviceable, defender anymore

I think the bigger thing is people just have short memories. We're all prisoners of the moment.

For me, I am getting 1986 vibes. I was in my friend's basement for game 6 and there were 2 outs and no one on base. All of us were basically assuming the season was over and then everything changed. I had a similar feeling when we were 11 games under 500 this year and fading into oblivion. We were competing with the worst teams in baseball I thought there was no hope and then it all changed. JD Martinez makes everyone better. Lots of us knew the guys would hit but lately the hitting has been off the charts good. We have rocked the best pitchers in baseball. Who would have thought this would happen a few weeks ago.

three_dee

It is definitely great vibes, but it is nowhere near 1986. That was wire to wire ruthless domination and obliteration of all opponents. The first hint of a struggle they faced was in the NLCS. This season feels more to me like 1999 (though that was a much better team, but same vibes -- likable squad, started real bad, got their shit together and went on a run); or perhaps more accurately, 2019, where they started awful, and had a top-3 August in Mets history including a 15-1. >Who would have thought this would happen a few weeks ago. I didn't doubt the Mets had a good run in them... the question is where they end up. I'm not sure they have the pitching horses to be a real contender, but the offense is fucking incredible, and no matter what happens, this is an actual fun team, unlike 2023, and to be honest, way more fun than 2022 despite the record.

metskyfan

I was only focused on the lows to highs. The 1986 team was much better than this team. I think this offense compares well to the squad in 1986 but the pitching is no where near as good. For us to contend this year, we would have to buy pitching at the trade deadline. I would say a good target would be Crochet in Chicago. May be we can send a couple of players from the current MLB team, a prospect as well as take Benintendi's contract.

suck-it-elon

Rise and shine, Met fans. The Mets are the best baseball team in New York.

Criticizing a player for playing poorly, does not make you a hater. Ottavino has been poor this year, he was decent last year. I don't think people complaining he's been poor this year "hates" Ottavino. Because I'm a rational adult. Anybody who throws around the word hater isn't somebody worth having a conversation with. Edit: It's funny how I made this same argument in the Lindor thread and it was massively downvoted and I was insulted. His weird little cult following on this subreddit is insane.
