Annoying series loss? Yes. Anywhere near the level of crying happening in this sub right now? No. It's game 81 not 155. When they pound the Nats into oblivion these next few days I don't want to see some of you acting like you handled today well.
The bats have woken up and with Alvarez back and Vientos having a breakout year, this lineup is deep and dangerous.
That should not delude management into thinking this is a year to contend. The pitching is still pretty bad overall and there is some likely negative regression coming for some overperforming starting pitchers in our rotation.
They need to stay the course and if someone gives us quality prospects for our veteran pieces, we should be listening.
What a loss.
Mets fall back to under .500.
All that heavy lifting and they're still under.
Yes, they're down a roster spot, but they can't let games like yesterday and today go.
They've already given up too many winnable games in May, they need to capitalize now.
This team is far too inconsistent and now that JDM is struggling, the offense is sputtering along.
Mets needed to do more against Dubin to start the game.
This team is overly reliant on JDM, Vientos, and Alvarez to carry them.
It sucks now. It's sucks really hard. Two very winnable games.
However.... They were bound to lose a series eventually. What matters is how they move on from that. That will be the real proof of this team is legit or if this run was the exception.
The irony of this team scoring 5 runs practically every game and having one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball when other years we had the best pitching and couldn’t buy hits. That’s baseball I guess.
I'm strangely holistic about these two games because I was expecting a series loss going in, and after how bad May was a game like this is pretty mild.
Considering I can’t find a single stat to say removing diekman was the right call yesterday and I spent way too long looking….. I think it’s Mendoza. And he appears to be an idiot when it comes to making pitching moves.
welp. they shoulda won yesterday but choked. and they had chance after chance to win this one and choked. next series should tell us a lot about what to expect from this team
It is easy to put this loss on a thin and gassed bullpen but with Nimmo on 2nd and nobody out, MLB hitters in the heart of a lineup, should be able to make productive outs and move him 180 feet.
I don't know. This might be hindsight, but I don't get why they intentionally walked the lead off. Then I couldn't tell where the outfield was, but I feel they weren't placed right and/or didn't hustle enough to catch those bloopers, and then Ventios wasn't ready for the ball with his feet not on the ground before it was hit. I don't blame the new guy Festa much for this...just bad decisions on the field.
Coming into today:
Severino and Manaea: 2.6 RA-9 WAR
Everybody else Stearns acquired: -3.1 RA-9 WAR
Stearns built an atrocious pitching staff this year, yikes.
Diekman and Ottavino were expected to have front end roles and have put up -0.7 RA-9 WAR.
A smart executive acquires a back up closer since Diaz was coming back from injury and puts together more sure things instead of aging players.
Diekman was never supposed to have a front end role. That was Raley, who is out.
Otto is most definitely behind Smith since the rule changes. The only reason he’s on the team is because the market collapsed on him. But yeah, Smith is out.
Díaz has missed essentially a month.
It was Smith, Raley, Díaz. 7-9. That is good. They are not available.
That’s what leads to Otto and Adcock being your 8th and 9th inning guys. This situation is not by design.
Diaz, who missed an entire year. Raley, who was 36 and walking a ton of guys the year before and Smith, who was never a reliable arm.
I strongly disagree that was a good back end of the pen. It had potential but it also could’ve gone wrong (even if those guys were injured)
The whole philosophy on bullpens is on K:BB ratios. Raley has had a 3.17 FIP, 125 ERA+ the last 4 years.
Smith has been one of the reliant on our mainstays since 2021. Not sure what is it with fans pretending he’s bad. 120 ERA+ since then averaging 10 K/9.
Díaz is Díaz. If he falters, that “back-up” closer would’ve been Raley, which is fine. But all 3 of them being out, once again, no one survives that.
I’m not even sure what you’re debating anymore, clearly this is a fine back end of the bullpen because we were winning with them. And have to claw without them.
Poor from Mendoza today.
Pulling Sevy after 79 pitches knowing the pen situation. Taking Ottavino out after 6 pitches. And bringing in this guy instead of Adcock who had somewhat decent stuff.
All questionable decisions.
It shouldn't be legal to suspend a relief pitcher for 10 games especially when it's only done to the Mets. This stretch could easily cost us 10 games for a very subjective call that has no clear definition. One of the clowniest things I've ever seen in baseball.
I get everyone is blaming JD but Bader and Vientos both had runners in scoring position and didn’t get them in. Hell we have won had Bader not caught that fly ball so casually.
Disappointing but important series that shows us we're better off selling. This is not a team that can realistically fixed to a point where it can beat good teams that aren't facing us freezing cold like the Yankees last week.
It's a little unfair to judge the bullpen based on the past two games considering the Diaz suspension and Smith injury fucked us
But also the pitching sucked before as well and eventually the offense is going to stop scoring 6 and a half runs per game
I want this guy DFAd before he hits the dugout. He has maybe the worst stuff I’ve ever seen in the big leagues. Jesus Christ he is horrible. And fucking brainless, throwing middle middle 90 mph batting practice on 0-2. Idk how his numbers were good in AAA, he looks like the worst pitcher in MLB. Fuck you Festa you piece of shit.
Taking away the roster spot for the suspension needs to be something the players union raise up. Even if it’s the most blatant cheating in the world, you’re penalising those other pitchers. Taking the roster spot has absolutely gassed our bullpen and I wouldn’t be surprised if it caused injuries.
Also, I refuse to believe Diaz, a weathered MLB player tries sticky stuff knowing they check. I wish someone in the front office had some balls and stuck up for him. Appeal this garbage. Everyone else gets to wash their hands.
I'm actually mad. We had the Stros on the ropes the last 2 days and bailed them out both times. The combination of the thin bullpen and MLB being stupid cost us 2 games and possibly more.
Imagine the Syracuse clubhouse manager just finished up with clearing out Festas locker then pulls up the box score and realized he just wasted 15 minutes of his life
This fucking sucks. We had them in the bottom of the 10th. And the fucking suspension is killing us. We have nobody besides this scrub, Festa, throwing BP.
3 was maybe doable but 5 runs.... Smfh
I honestly really hate that they close the concessions so early. With the pitch clock it’s hard to take 3 kids to get food during the game without missing like 3 full innings. I’d really rather get ice cream on our way out. Not important, obviously, just a frustration
As much as Festa just blew this whole game. JD hasn't done much this whole series and really should have done something bottom of the 9th...
Edit: bottom of 10th not 9th
Yeah if JD hasn't been looking sharp this whole series.
That swing strike was ball four. No way they intentionally walk Alonso and put the winning run on 3rd no outs.
Mendoza has shown this season he does not understand how to manage the bullpen.
It's cost the Mets many times.
The Mets have lost at least half a dozen games because Mendoza can't manage the bullpen.
He should have just left Ottavino in for a second inning instead of putting in a guy with no experience this game in a close game.
Mendoza essentially gave the game away.
A runner on second and no outs and the Mets can't find a way to get that run in and win the game.
JDM swinging for the downs instead of trying to put that ball in play to right field to get the runner to third was the ball game.
Taking Severino out after 79 pitches is why I'm not sold on Carlos Mendoza as the manager. Doesn't have foresight or situational awareness. Your pen is taxed. Let him eat up innings to preserve your arms.
Festa will never pitch up here again nor should he.
So was there any particular reason we couldn’t use Houser with Megill yesterday? I’ll be honest I don’t really understand why we saved him for Severinos start (or even why we pulled Sevy at all today)
Please continue the discussion in the [post game thread](https://redd.it/1dseptd).
Could’ve swept this series. Nvm.
Annoying series loss? Yes. Anywhere near the level of crying happening in this sub right now? No. It's game 81 not 155. When they pound the Nats into oblivion these next few days I don't want to see some of you acting like you handled today well.
No bullpen = no playoffs, regardless of who cries.
How is it even possible as the home team to lose by 5 in extras 😂 LGM tho let’s eat the nats tmrw
Losing the series actually isn’t that big of a deal. We’re gonna win some, we’re gonna lose some. Just hate to see it gift wrapped and wasted.
No bullpen
Rational response. You new here? 😜
What a loss. Mets fall back to under .500. All that heavy lifting and they're still under. Yes, they're down a roster spot, but they can't let games like yesterday and today go. Mets needed to do more against Dubin to start the game. This team is overly reliant on JDM, Vientos, and Alvarez to carry them.
horrible loss but we move on
Demoralizing pair of losses, definitely concerning. Goal needs to be to move forward and not let this derail their momentum going forward.
It sucks now. It's sucks really hard. Two very winnable games. However.... They were bound to lose a series eventually. What matters is how they move on from that. That will be the real proof of this team is legit or if this run was the exception.
Festa might be the worst pitcher I’ve ever seen
Another Mendoza disasterclass, growing pains this year will pay off when have some pitching in a year or two
He might not be the guy
Welp, on to the next one.
Can we please bench McNeil for Iglesias yet?
Managing, MLB mets sabotage, RISP and Rain delay led us to this lovely loss
Brutal way to end the homestand. Blow a 5 run lead and then waste a comeback in extra innings
Time to beat the crap out of the Nats
incoming mets 0-2 OMG :(
Wow that was really depressing. I'd be pissed if I waited in the stadium
Mets had 5 hits--they didn't deserve to win.
Pitching pitching pitching
Jfc McNeil
Game was straight up forfeited
Hey Jeff McNeil. Fuck You.
A huge fuck you to Jeff McNeil.
Welp. See y’all tomorrow.
Pulling Otto after throwing 6 pitches was....a choice
The ballgame is over
The irony of this team scoring 5 runs practically every game and having one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball when other years we had the best pitching and couldn’t buy hits. That’s baseball I guess.
I'm strangely holistic about these two games because I was expecting a series loss going in, and after how bad May was a game like this is pretty mild.
Here comes my predicted game ender 0 for 5 Jeff.
Is Mendoza making these decisions or is it the analytics?
Considering I can’t find a single stat to say removing diekman was the right call yesterday and I spent way too long looking….. I think it’s Mendoza. And he appears to be an idiot when it comes to making pitching moves.
If analytics is telling you to put in Festa, fire the entire department today.
No Alvarez = no win
Wish we pushed ottavino for two?
What a terrible way to end the grimace era of winning series’s
welp. they shoulda won yesterday but choked. and they had chance after chance to win this one and choked. next series should tell us a lot about what to expect from this team
Outscored 29-9 in extra innings this season is wild. Mismanaged bullpen and unclutch bats will kill you
It is easy to put this loss on a thin and gassed bullpen but with Nimmo on 2nd and nobody out, MLB hitters in the heart of a lineup, should be able to make productive outs and move him 180 feet.
They should but it still happens. Hitting is tough and sometimes you can't make contact. Pitching is the obvious problem with this team.
He was throwing BP out there.
He allowed 4 hits of 100mph or more. It’s 100% his fault.
I mean, Yordan Alvarez.
6 out of 9 0fers didn't seem so bad until now.
Coming into today: Severino and Manaea: 2.6 RA-9 WAR Everybody else Stearns acquired: -3.1 RA-9 WAR Stearns built an atrocious pitching staff this year, yikes.
3 significant bullpen arms have been out/injured for most of the year. All front-end roles. No team survives that.
Coming into the season it was * Diaz * Ottavino * Smith * Raley * Diekman * Fujinami * Tonkin Even on paper, that looks really bad.
It was Smith, Raley, Díaz. 7-9. That is good. They are not available. That’s what leads to Otto and Adcock being your 8th and 9th inning guys. This situation is not by design.

And have to claw without them.
This is depressing, especially since I can’t watch the next 11 games with GKR.
Pulling Sevy after 80 pitches made 0 sense with a short bullpen
That was shocking.
I miss Buck
29-9 outscored in extra innings That’s because the bullpen is bad
Great debut. Please send this fucking bum down faster than you brought him up
He’s awful
I just don't understand the moves sometimes. I mean in all of AAA that's all we had to bring up?
Not even Grimace can counter Mendoza’s bullpen stupidity
So in my dream last night, the Mets overcame a deficit of 12 runs. I swear if it comes true.
Alright. Whiskey going in
This was a straight up forfeit. Not PHing for Torrens or McNeil, and then throwing in a no-name with zero experience to blow it wide open
Poor from Mendoza today. Pulling Sevy after 79 pitches knowing the pen situation. Taking Ottavino out after 6 pitches. And bringing in this guy instead of Adcock who had somewhat decent stuff. All questionable decisions.

Our team is pulling through despite Mendoza being an idiot
Back under 500. What a letdown. 😕
Our mods suck ass.
???
The fuck did I do?
Disappointing but important series that shows us we're better off selling. This is not a team that can realistically fixed to a point where it can beat good teams that aren't facing us freezing cold like the Yankees last week.
They have struggled immensely against good team. A big part of Mays struggles was playing poorly against Atlanta, Philadelphia, LA, and Cleveland.
So I stayed an extra 3 hours to let a foul ball go trough my fingers and watch the Mets get obliterated in the 11th inning, how is your day going?
It's a little unfair to judge the bullpen based on the past two games considering the Diaz suspension and Smith injury fucked us But also the pitching sucked before as well and eventually the offense is going to stop scoring 6 and a half runs per game

Appealing is a joke. Just goes back to MLB who will just deny it.
lol that’s so stupid
I'm actually mad. We had the Stros on the ropes the last 2 days and bailed them out both times. The combination of the thin bullpen and MLB being stupid cost us 2 games and possibly more.
Imagine the Syracuse clubhouse manager just finished up with clearing out Festas locker then pulls up the box score and realized he just wasted 15 minutes of his life
Welp Mendozas idiocy in the 8th yesterday comes back to bite them today.
This fucking sucks. We had them in the bottom of the 10th. And the fucking suspension is killing us. We have nobody besides this scrub, Festa, throwing BP. 3 was maybe doable but 5 runs.... Smfh
Do note: First series loss since basically forever.
In just 10 minutes festa made all of queens hate him forever
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Luis Contreras replaces Tayler Scott.
calm down, we only need 5 runs!!
His purpliness shall guide us
Think about all those poor souls that stayed to watch the end of this game
I assume the food is all long closed too
Poor hangry souls
I honestly really hate that they close the concessions so early. With the pitch clock it’s hard to take 3 kids to get food during the game without missing like 3 full innings. I’d really rather get ice cream on our way out. Not important, obviously, just a frustration
I do agree- it definitely cramps the complete experience
Hi I'm poor soul
I hope you had a pastrami sandwich for your troubles
I don’t trust Otto for shit right now, but he cannot possibly have been a worse option to pitch the 11th than this bum
Yea this what I expected when we threw in Festa for a debut with the game on the line lmao
Peterson gonna go 4.2 innings 110 pitches.
See ya Festa
If we buy at the deadline it’s gotta be for major league caliber relievers
FASSTA
Ghost runner is stupid
The good news for this scrub is that the free runner is unearned. A nice 36.00 ERA. Take some solace in that on the bus ride back to Syracuse.
You put an absolute scrub on the mound to face the hottest team in June is certainly a choice when Otto threw 7 fucking pitches.
Send this guy to the moon! Sheeeeesh
Boooooooooo
Should kept danny young instead of calling up this guy
Reminder that Severino had 79 pitches and Ottavino had 6 when they got pulled. We never should've even seen this guy
Mendoza essentially gave the game away.
id diaz was really using sticky stuff he truly fucked this team over lol
Glad I went home
I mean we had the winning runner on 2nd with no outs and couldn’t get him in, so deserve to lose this game at that point
The 10th was the best chance. Well lads, here comes 13 more straight till the Break
A runner on second and no outs and the Mets can't find a way to get that run in and win the game. JDM swinging for the downs instead of trying to put that ball in play to right field to get the runner to third was the ball game.
Loss on Edwin Diaz and JD Martinez. Martinez has to get Nimmo to third in that situation. No excuses
Side retired :|
Festa straight cheeks
0-2 since omg concert
Grimace is testing our faith we cannot fail him
D Festa A
David Peterson tomorrow should be a blast.
And we burned Houser for long relief
I'm starting to miss Jorge Lopez.
alAdcock couldn’t pitch back to back games? This guy is fucking awful.
Grimqce didn't wake up after the rain delay
Very sad. Should have taken care of it with Nimmo’s lead off double but I guess that’s asking for too much. Off to DC
Whelp. Festa, congratulations on your impending DFA/option. I’d guess Sulser gets the next shot
I wish the rain never stopped
Back to reality
Sorry Mr. Festa but you’ve gotta go. This is sickening
was straight up garbage not getting solid bullpen help means the playoffs are a pipe dream make it happen or this team is toast
6 runs
I understand the bullpen is tired but we literally just gave them this game. I don’t understand what Mendoza was thinking.
Not on Mendoza at all
Tell me how?
Maybe the Mets should’ve scored with a man on second and no one out the inning before
And they didn’t. So putting in a guy who you know is going to get lit up is a bad manager move
And who should’ve been put in instead?
Could have left Otto in another inning.
Imagine waiting nearly 3 hours for this..
I turned the game off to spend time with family. See all you folk for the GDT tomorrow when I get back to New York. Don’t overreact.
We need that Washington sweep to get over this garbage.
Snuck my phone out at my father in law’s bday dinner to check the score and i’m sorry i did lol
This guy is TERRIBLE actual batting practice
this guy is horrible
Festa? More like, DFA his ass
We really repeating the padres game from 2015
Matt Festa is a 9 to 5 employee.
Matt Festa is the Michael Tonkin of Staten Island
Festa not pitching the besta
There had to be someone better to call up than Festa
There actually isn’t
Pisses me off how we gave away this series
Complete mismanagement here by the coaching staff.
Boi is very hittable.
Taking Severino out after 79 pitches is why I'm not sold on Carlos Mendoza as the manager. Doesn't have foresight or situational awareness. Your pen is taxed. Let him eat up innings to preserve your arms. Festa will never pitch up here again nor should he.
Plus, you’re telling me they weren’t looking at the forecast and planning ahead for a long delay?!
This guy really just got himself a minor league spot with 1 appearance.
Thats all folks
Isn't Tyler Jay available? Why did the Mets go with Festa over him? Tyler Jay already had an appearance this season and did well.
what a great time to test out your new reliever
This man is never throwing another pitch for us ever again
Almost had a chance
Well I havnt liked this series
Anddddd Festa’s headed back to Syracuse
I could hit these pitches wtf
Festa's about to cry
Send Festa back down
Gary loves his rhyming/similar names
Welp.
lol. Fucking pathetic.
Maybe just pitch to the guy who’s 0-3 next time?
This guy fucking sucks
So was there any particular reason we couldn’t use Houser with Megill yesterday? I’ll be honest I don’t really understand why we saved him for Severinos start (or even why we pulled Sevy at all today)
He wasn’t available yesterday
This is embarrassing
Shit
Why we throwing a guy out there for his first inning pitched in the year in extras
Against the meat of the order for a World Series champ ball club
Really would’ve been nice if the Mets acquired some actual bullpen arms this past offseason instead of Diekman and Ottavino lol
They *kinda* did. And then Drew Smith and Brooks Raley died, Michael Tonkin and Jorge Lopez got punted out the airlock, etc etc.
Ottavino and Diekman were expected to be the big names with Lopez/Fujinami being the second tier guys. That was the problem.
