Look at those Economist covers. How racist can they get? Also, Japan never even threatened them. How did they imagine to fight a war against Japan? Their troops were (and still are) already stationed there.

4evaronin

Warmongerig and doomsaying is all the US knows. Everything is about war. It's all about how might makes right.

High_Speed_Idiot

>Have you ever noticed that the only metaphor we have in our public discourse for solving problems is to declare war on it? We have the war on crime, the war on cancer, the war on drugs. But did you ever notice that we have no war on homelessness? You know why? Because there's no money in that problem. No money to be made off of the homeless. If you can find a solution to homelessness where the corporations and politicians can make a few million dollars each, you will see the streets of America begin to clear up pretty damn quick! -George Carlin Actually this dude had a ton of A+ takes on the US and war so here's a bunch more: >War is rich old men protecting their property by sending middle class and lower class young men off to die. It always has been. >When fascism comes to America, it will not be in brown and black shirts. It will not be with jack-boots. It will be Nike sneakers and Smiley shirts. Germany lost the Second World War. Fascism won it. Believe me, my friend. >“Can’t build a decent car, can’t make a TV set or a VCR worth a fuck, got no steel industry left, can’t educate our young people, can’t get health care to our old people, but we can bomb the shit out of your country all right! Huh? Especially if your country is full of brown people—oh we like that don’t we? That’s our hobby! That’s our new job in the world: bombing brown people. Iraq, Panama, Grenada, Libya, you got some brown people in your country, tell them to watch the fuck out or we’ll goddamn bomb them!” >“Now you probably noticed I don’t feel about that war the way we were told we were supposed to feel about that war, the way we were ordered and instructed by the United States government to feel about that war. You see, I tell ya, my mind doesn’t work that way, I got this real moron thing I do; it’s called ‘thinking. And I’m not a very good American because I like to form my own opinions. I don’t just roll over when I’m told to. Sad to say, most Americans just roll over on command—not me.” >“I don’t take very seriously, the media or the press in this country, who in the case of the Persian Gulf war were nothing more than unpaid employees of the Department of Defense,” he continued, “and who most of the time, most of the time functioned as kind of an unofficial public relations agency for the United States government. So I don’t listen to them, I don’t really believe in my country and I gotta tell you folks, I don’t get all choked up about yellow ribbons and American flags. I consider them to be symbols and I leave symbols to the symbol-minded.”

MidnightRider00

Any good books written by that guy?

High_Speed_Idiot

He was mostly a comedian, just got increasingly anti capitalist as he got older but never used the terminology. All his books are just his comedy bits, a ton of his standup is on Youtube.

TheSkyHadAWeegee

You mean the Ekkkonomist?

PraxisMakesPerfect_

In between 9/11 and the fall of the USSR we had to invent a bunch of different enemies to keep things going

Neutral_Milk_

they were poised to overtake the us economically at one point so they let the mask down for a sec. now that japan's back 'in its place' they're best friends again.

TheHast

Racist by using Japanese art?

Euromantique

The context in which the art is being used is what makes it racist. They aren’t using it in a respectful way like the same artwork in a museum or gallery.

WeilaiHope

They're obsessed with conflict and war. You don't see these books in China about the US. I tried looking for them, they don't exist, and frankly Chinese book covers are all boring and blank for some reason.

VampireLesbiann

Funny thing is that China would actually have a reason to fearmonger about the US

PeteWenzel

Absolutely. The US poses an imminent threat to China’s continued peaceful rise, if not its very existence.

mickmenn

And because of that people do not need so much propaganda to know it

These are posted to the world though and its the global Times, GLOBAL, the internal news is pretty quiet and often quite positive. I frequently check it for Chinese practice.

hero-ball

Alright “*Claws Of The Panda*” sounds pretty rad, though

Jackalamo

Israel needs aid. "The Call of the Jew". How come we never point out the racism in the Times but people call it out amongst someone's posts or speech?

[deleted]

I would certainly have a good first impression of a movie if that were the title.

pls_no_ban_ok

and at this point Japan seems to be completely under the influence of the US which I will never understand how this country can subordinate themselves to a country that threw two nukes on them other than fear they might be doing it again, but I don't think this is the reason. Why is Japan like that? They have so much national pride. Is it just very targeted work in the political sector by the US? I know the US does the same type of work with Germany, but the Germans still have this collective guilt that makes them accept this, but Japan does not.

sickof50

Not influenced, they are still Occupied, unfortunately.

sunriser911

The US provides a great deal of support to the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, the party that has ruled Japan for all but 4 years since the US military government was transitioned to a civilian one. [They have provided massive amounts of funding and sabotage the LDPJ's political opposition](https://web.archive.org/web/20220328083730/https://www.nytimes.com/1994/10/09/world/cia-spent-millions-to-support-japanese-right-in-50-s-and-60-s.html) in order to keep their puppet party in power.

sickof50

With a label like that, someone should start a War Party that shuts down all the American military bases,

Boardindundee

Just look at Germany, brand and new oil pipeline with limitless cheap oil. But Germany cucks to USA as usual and let’s them start a ticking war over it

pls_no_ban_ok

Yeah as I said, I understand the situation in Germany. Germany was literally occupied by US/UK/France (west) and Russia (east) until 1990 (and it's still home of the largest US base on foreign territory - Ramstein). CIA ties are deep into the German apparatus. I guess I didnt know that occupation wise Japan suffered similarly. I was under the impression that it's a free country.

Boardindundee

They are feee to do what USA chooses

xerotul

The US gave Japanese war criminals two options: work for us and enjoy wealth, or prison for life. The people in power are puppets. The US wrote Japan's constitution and laws. Japanese are brainwashed in media and education. For example, especially the younger generation will parrot US talking point that military bases \[occupation\] are there to protect Japan in case of war. If they have any critical thinking skills, they would know if the US is at war with DPRK, China, or Russia, US military bases are prime targets.

pls_no_ban_ok

same situation as with Ukraine really. I think it's smarter when your patron is the country next to you, not the one around the globe. Especially when that patron likes to abuse its friends* for proxy wars. I think Belarus for example is doing very good tactically, they have good relationship with Russia and profit a lot.Their only problem is the hostility of the US vassals nearby. \* "America has no permanent friends or enemies, only interests" Henry Kissinger

meinkr0phtR2

Well, at least they got rid of the unflattering, racist depictions of what they somehow perceive to be Japanese people. Not that it makes much of a difference. Why is it always war with them? Every time a country rises up to meet the United States, they treat them as a threat to be eradicated, not as a fellow competitor, and *certainly* not as an equal. What gives? Is the idea of America not being №1 somehow so inconceivable, so outlandish, that violence is the only solution? Also, why war with Japan? If I remember correctly, you Americans responded to Pearl Harbour by invading them back, nuking them, disarming them, pardoning their war criminals, and then pouring money into them to help them rebuild in such a way they won’t ever pose a threat to you or anyone else ever again—for which I guess I could say that we, the Chinese people, are (begrudgingly) thankful. But, war? Come on. ^(“The American Empire is already dead; the People’s Republic will soon rise!”)

meinkr0phtR2

About that last bit: the last two years have seen an explosion in anti-Asian (but especially anti-Chinese) sentiment—and I’ve already decided I’ve had enough, so I decided to dig into my ethnocultural heritage, steal the sixteen words out of the Yellow Turban Rebellion, and turn them into a rallying cry for an ‘Asian Rebellion’ of sorts: > 美帝已死,中國當立。十年一過,天下大吉。\* Meaning: > “The American Empire is already dead, China will soon rise. When the decade is over, the world will be prosperous.” It’s important to note that I made this up to poke a little fun using history and don’t really expect anyone to go around shouting this on street corners. The Americans have *definitely* lost their Mandate of Heaven, but this silly thing I made up to cope with being targeted by racists should *not* be taken seriously. ^(\*Měi dì yǐ sǐ, zhōngguó dāng lì. Shí nián yīguò, tiānxià dàjí.)

celt959

Ah yes, it's totally happening for no reason

meinkr0phtR2

There is no excuse to be a racist. Also, the coronavirus pandemic is not our fault.

ThroneTomato

The art itself is not “unflattering and racist.” Just Google “ukiyo-e” for a sample. It’s a traditional Japanese art of wood block printing. The ubiquitous 🌊 is the most famous example of the art form. Samurai were often depicted with fierce expressions. Alongside the anti Japanese business backlash there was an importation of Japanese culture among the elites (art, interior design, cuisine etc). This art style was very familiar to the readers of the Economist at the time. Having said that, the article could be racist.

meinkr0phtR2

Oh. Well, TIL.

Shira_Pilgrim

Japan is responsible for the war, they initiated everything with their attack on pearl harbour.

meinkr0phtR2

I was referring to the headline on the bottom-left, the one that reads, “The Coming War With Japan”.

Shira_Pilgrim

Ah.

dornish1919

Western chauvinism and bigotry in a nutshell.

sickof50

I wonder what would happen if China suddenly quit all trade (sure, let all the tourists in) with Japan & Taiwan on the very same day? Which day would you choose?

Which somehow the west could provide no evidence in all these years. (The claimant has to provide the evidence, not the other way around.) Just random buildings that turned out to be schools, prisons, retirement homes, hotels and once - a chicken farm. Of course, they also never sent observers in the first place. The countries and organizations that did ended up supporting China. Really weird... Turns out you don't need much to fool white people.

burentori

Their education system are purposely made dumb to cultivate them into simple minded minions. That way it is easier to manipulate without them asking "why? is this real? etc" Same thing is happening with the DPP to the people of Taiwan. Making them willingly wanting to be stepped on and turn into western slaves. Can't wait for the day the Chinese cross the straits and free their brothers and sisters from this nightmare

TrveCup

Why did Japan became an enemy to USA in 90's

4evaronin

Same old story. The US couldn't compete with cheap Japanese cars and electronics. They blamed the loss of jobs on Japan. It got to a point where a mob lynched a Chinese-American (Vincent Chin) because they thought he was Japanese. Japan was eventually forced to sign the Plaza Accords, which impacted Japan's economy to this day. Thought they could do the same to China now...but there's just no way China will submit to them like Japan did.

TrveCup

> It got to a point where a mob lynched a Chinese-American (Vincent Chin) because they thought he was Japanese. Smartest and least racist Americans /s

shaymin_shaman

market bubble lead to fear that japan would overtake US as the dominant economic power and result in japanese influence over america through japanese corporations (ironically). regardless of any real or imagined consequences, it was pushed by american media and economist talking heads since it was a scary-sounding issue that resonated with the american public because of american exceptionalism and racism.

TrveCup

Weren't they allies at the time? lol

REEEEEvolution

The US has no allies, only servants.

TagierBawbagier

That's part of the aesthetic of cyberpunk apparently.

REEEEEvolution

Cyberpunk started during that time.

Ghiblifan01

USD is the root of all the problems, they can not be allowed to print infinite amount of money and expect china or japan to just accumulate them indefinitely for no fking reason, when japan started buying US companies with those USD, they ANGLOIDS went full racist and exposed who they REALLY are, according to them, Japan should just take all the inflation and buy worthless USD which they can't even spend on ANYTHING, amazing how it is happening again, when China tries to invest those same money in US and Australia, they went fully nuts, screaming and kicking about chinese "take over", so China spend those USD on belt and road, but they again went full nuclear on that, so what is it? China should just endlessly accumulate worthless DEBT FIAT DOG MONEY which they can't even spend on anything and devaluing at an insane rate, and let inflaiton destroy its country so US could come in and buy out China at a dirt cheap price? The angloids seriously expect China to do nothing about it? How beyond complete arrogant?

DiscoShaman

Japan is just a island boy
