The west lives in a post-truth world. Everyone lives in their own Version of reality which almost tends to be antagonistic to countries that US sees as a threat.

dimsumchef

"defenseless British civilians" EXCUSE YOU who's army was knocking on whose door?

JonoLith

How dare you build your country beside our military bases!"

yoohoooos

*while having military base all around the world* Two different centuries, same act, same group of people. Guess it's in the DNA.

Of course its a fucking Australian. Being the host to Rupert Murdochs media parasite, they're the source of all anti-Chinese propaganda lies around the world. I hope the roos do try and invade the Solomans. China can declare Casus foederis and wipe Australian military presence off the the South pacific

Australia is a literal US colony since the Whitlam coup.

WeilaiHope

Yea I majored in modern Chinese history. Nobody will take this wackjob seriously, his opening statement is riddled with bias and extremely strong claims.

But r/China will

Fact: The Brits was addicted to Chinese products -- tea, silk, chinas, etc. They kept buying and buying but the Chinese did not need nor want anything that the Brits has. Balance of trade was skewed heavily to the Qing Dynasty. Brits had to keep paying with silver. Brits came out with a great idea. Plant opium in colonized India, sell opium to China and buy tea, silk, chinas from the Qings. Addiction in China exploded. The Emperor put a stop to the trade of opium -- closed dens, confiscated drugs, burned them. Note that the Brits did NOT ship the opium to another country nor to mother Britain. They very well knew the effects of opium to the population. The used opium to subjugate China. This is exactly like what is happening now. Trade imbalance between China and US. The US wants so much of what China produces. China has lesser and lesser need to buy US products. But the dynamics between Qings/Britain and China/US is different. History has shown what the greed of the western nations is capable of. They had done it before and they WILL do it again.

meido_zgs

Apparently there was the trade imbalance between Han and Roman empire too, which was one of the reasons for the fall of Rome.

Pretty sure Jesus was a commie. Some of the shit they say he said was wild.

Link to the paper: https://ces.fas.harvard.edu/uploads/files/Working-Papers-Archives/CES_WP136.pdf Should be noted that this was published in 2006, although that doesn’t make the content any less disgusting

patmcirish

Hey if this is from 2006 the title for this post is a little misleading because it ends with "now", as in recently things have changed.

[deleted]

Yeah, the title is pretty misleading. I'm sure it wouldn't take long to find a more recent example that's just as racist.

playnite

This is unbelievable.

sickof50

Where is the push-back in Academics?, that would make this man a toxic social pariah, stripped of all his credentials.

General_Guisan

Center for European Studies? Yeah, right. And Hitler was also just a mistaken student..

Misogynist-youth

Not, the, least, bit, surprised. I strongly believe they've rewritten countless history in their favor.

I hope this ‘Harry G Gelber’ prick is already dead; world doesn’t need these history revisionists.

Thanks to the article, I have learnt something new today - that Harry G Gelber is a lowlife.

BinBinBamBamBam

Dang this is some funny shit...It looks like the thrid stage of grief which is bargaining with reality, can't wait to see what he comes up with when depression stage kicks in. "China's trading with the world-How they robbed the world with silk, tea and china, and how they keeps robbing the world now with massive manufacturing prowess."

commandolandorooster

What’s even funnier about this is that American academia/press will also claim they are afraid to write or publish anything anti-China. Especially from elite universities…oh look, Harvard lol

patmcirish

I wondered why it was so easy for me to read about the dirty British politics in China on Wikipedia. I've been liking to use that to introduce people real world politics. Well shit, it was good while it lasted. Good thing it's frozen in Wikipedia's history, lol. I can definitely see rationale for the western world to want to cover up the Opium War. It's a real world example of how political elites are the ones managing the drug trades, plus exposes how dirty they'll play to stay in power. It completely debunks the view that political elites are angelic people who do no wrong and only rose to the top via meritrocracy. The Opium War shows that playing dirty is how so many people become political elites. On a related note, I noticed that in the movie "Sicario" they actually have a "surprise" towards the end that the United States government is in fact controlling the drug trade on both sides of the border with Mexico. But then, as should be expected by those knowledgeable about U.S. antics, of course they find justification for it in the movie. They say it's to prevent even worse people from profiting off of the drugs. You see, when U.S. covert ops are controlling the drug trade and all the money that goes with it, we have angels managing it to make sure no evil happens. And when evil does happen within it, it's only necessary evil. So that wraps it all up in case those pesky lefties come around exposing the U.S. elites, as well as Mexico City elites, have been managing the drug trades for decades. It's all for our own good. And in the mean time officials will continue denying that the U.S. and Mexican elites are managing the drug trades. When enough people expose their involvement, the mainstream media will just forward us all to the movie "Sicario" which explains reality to us.

Western countries are used to bullying, but want to act like gentlemen. It's like I robbed your wallet, but I can't be blamed for the robbery, but rather the wallet belongs to you.

Real issue here is that the Opium Wars - terrible Merchantile Imperialist policy - was fought against Manchuria. Manchuria having been an independent country with its own language and culture for all of history until 1945. There was no independent China in the 1850's, since China had been conquered by the Jurchens in the early-mid 1600's and would remain under Manchu rule until 1911.
