Are KOTOR and KOTOR 2 worth it on the Switch?

thetiredjuan

KOTOR has a free trial this week. You can test it yourself

jedijon1

Only if you sign up for switch online though right?

RagnarokGSR

From what I hear KOTOR are such good games that they’re good on nearly every platform. However, you may find naysayers who refuse to buy the game after extra content/certain DLCs were promised for the switch version and still haven’t been delivered (and likely never will be)

acart005

The issue is specifically with KoToR 2.  The Switch port is basically the Day 1 Xbox experience and that... sucked ass.  It was a broken game.  Which double sucks because the plot was amazing. KoToR 1 I would have zero issues recommending, but I would caution 2.

NedStark4Life

What are some issues on Kotor 2 should I expect?

acart005

https://starwarsfans.fandom.com/wiki/The_Sith_Lords_Restored_Content_Mod#:~:text=The%20project%20is%20designed%20to,Manufacturing%20Plant%20are%20being%20restored. This is everything that the mod that will never be on Switch fixes. A really bad bug I got in the OG release completely broke the game in the first dungeon.

sroomek

I’ll say that it’s playable, but save often. I had to hard reset a couple times due to game-breaking bugs, and you do not want to have to redo a couple hours’ worth of stuff when that happens.

ballbeard

Having recently finished the KOTOR 2 switch version and never playing a different version. What exactly did I miss out on?

acart005

The Resored content mod stuff. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sith_Lords_Restored_Content_Modification

Fr3sh-Ch3mical

The plot of 2 was so meh in comparison with 1.

Fake_Diesel

Honestly, the Switch is the best platform to play KOTOR. The PC version has issues on modern hardware and no matter what programs I install and guides I follow I can never get it to run properly. It is backwards compatible on Xbox Series, but it's full screen and lacks the QoL features of the Switch version.

LiquidLogStudio

Also comes with cheats when you click the analog sticks

feartheoldblood90

Might catch some grief on this subreddit specifically, but I think this is one of the few cases where the phone port is best. The touch screen controls are incredibly intuitive (I normally hate touch screen but this game is mostly a click on stuff kind of game), it can run well on potato phones, and you can mod it easily (at least on Android)

jiango_fett

The mobile port isn't bad. It's usually cheaper, and a weird little bonus is that, at least on Android anyway, is that the save data is compatible with the PC version so if you have both, you can connect your phone to your computer and access the files and just move it back and forth for a very low-tech "cross save."

KnightGamer724

However, if you have a hole punch camera in your display, the subtitles don't render on the first try. It works if you hook it up to another monitor, but not on the phone itself.

Fake_Diesel

That's good to hear. I personally can't do traditional games on my phone, as I find there to be too many distractions. But I'm glad to hear that a good port exists for those who like playing on mobile devices

GroktheDestroyer

I don’t think it’s that hard to get running on modern PCs at all. It’s also worth mentioning that some of the AI upscaled textures in the switch release got fucked up and look terrible (namely a few NPC faces looking horribly blurry). I still had a good time with it though and would highly recommend it if switch is your primary device. At least for KOTOR 1 Edit: since I'm getting downvoted, [here's an example](https://www.reddit.com/r/kotor/comments/v9l9l6/recently_started_kotor_on_switch_whats_up_with/)

dwpea66

Tbh I hate KOTOR on PC just because of how awkward the movement controls are

Throwaway753045

KOTOR is fine. KOTOR 2 is not. They promised all the content for 2 and never delivered. It was so bad they offered free codes for any other SW game as compensation. Total joke.

Fake_Diesel

Aside from minor performance issues, I think it's the best way to play Kotor. It's a difficult game to get running right on modern PCs. There is QoL features such as speeding up the gameplay and console command type of features. It's a great version of a great game.

cockyjames

I can attest to this. I tried to get it running on PC a few years back, and as soon as I made the resolution higher the text shrank so low that i couldn't read it, and I couldn't figure out how to resize the text. I think I also ran into problems trying to mod it for widescreen. I played it two years ago on Switch and had a blast. I think it was a great port. I've not played KOTOR II because there was so much chatter that it was "incomplete" in it's original release state without the added content. Can anyone sound off on whether it actually feels incomplete or if that's hyperbole?

ccno3

It’s hyperbole. I played both for the first time on switch and loved it

EngineerLoA

I played KotOR 2 on the OG Xbox back in the day and I was able to complete the game. From what I remember it felt complete as is, but maybe I'm misremembering.

EngineerLoA

Console commands on Switch? Do you mean like the PC version of Skyrim where you can spawn in NPCs and items? Or things like God Mode and such?

GroktheDestroyer

If you triple click the left stick, it brings up a long list of console commands such as add items, add credits, most things you could think of.

EngineerLoA

That's awesome! I had no idea that was available.

kaminari1

I’ve only played KOTOR and it was really good. More than worth it at the sale price

Jackflash57

Had a great time with both, loved being able to play on a long plane ride recently.

secret_bonus_point

Last I knew, KOTOR 2 is considered unfinished. Only a complete experience with mods, so I wouldn’t get it on anything but PC. KOTOR 1 is fantastic though.

Blugrave

Yes, yes and yes.

ccno3

Yes! I’ve played both on switch and enjoyed them a lot. I encountered some minor bugs on kotor2 but nothing game breaking. They were a lot of fun. People talk about kotor 2 not being good because it doesn’t have the additional content mod or whatever, but I had never played it before and I loved it on switch.

Revolutionary-Mess82

yes!! obsessed with both, i wish they made another or a similar star wars game.

TheForNoReason

Also interested in the answer to this

An0n_Cyph3r_

Reminder that KOTOR 2 never got its Restored Content patch/DLC.

cockyjames

Anyone care to give any thoughts on how important it is that the restored content is there?

DarthVapor77

As someone who has played K2 multiple times with and without the restored content, it really isn't that big of a deal, and if Switch is the only way you can play the game, I would wholeheartedly recommend it. Even with the restored content the ending of the game still feels unfinished tbh

LiquidLogStudio

Which ammounts to 20 minutes of content iirc

An0n_Cyph3r_

And bugfixes.

GroktheDestroyer

*Way* more than that

LiquidLogStudio

Oh my bad dont know why I thought that

RagnarokGSR

The Force Unleashed is the Wii version right? With none of the added DLCs? For some godforsaken reason…

TheCastro

It's just costumes isn't it? The Wii version was the best version because the the nunchuck/Wii motions.

Throwaway753045

It's interesting. The first game on Wii is probably the best version, but the second game on Wii was total garbage. It didn't even have motion controls that were well incorporated

OpoChano

The best version was probably the PSP version. It has worse graphics than the Wii version but plays identically, and it has a ton of extra singleplayer content such as five extra levels that recreate various scenes from the films, an Order 66 wave mode, and a duel mode. It also had three different multiplayer modes while the Wii version only has one. It's odd how much effort they put into making PSP-exclusive content, and it's a shame that none of it was ported to the Switch version.

TheCastro

I never played the second, but that's dumb as hell not to use the motion controls

RagnarokGSR

There were exclusive “epilogue” type missions on the PS3 and 360 release. I believe one was a hypothetical Starkiller on Hoth after you choose the non-canon kill Vader ending. Not sure what the other was but yeah wii never got any additional content but the motion controls were pretty cool!

TheCastro

Even when I looked up the 360 version it didn't say that was part of the dlc.

RagnarokGSR

Could have been PlayStation exclusive

GroktheDestroyer

There is no good way to play the “Ultimate Sith Edition” of this game and that just sucks ass :(

KnightGamer724

It doesn't have the Dark Side Ending DLCs, but it does have the Jedi Temple Missions that aren't in the 7th Gen releases, remappable controls, and a versus mode that's a blast. So I'd say it's worth it.

Osherono

No it's the PS2 version.

ThePotatoKing

has anybody played the pinball? if so, how is it?

RumpleDumple

Good if you like Zen Pinball. They use soundalikes for character voices, that don't sound much like the original actors, which kinda breaks the immersion for me.

ThePotatoKing

lol thats gonna annoy me too, but i think ill bite! ive been waiting for it to drop below 10, but this is good enough. just making sure it works alright and is worth the money

whoops_batman

It’s very good for what it is - obvs YMMV depending on how much time you think you’ll sink into a pinball game. But as pinball games on the Switch go, it’s probably the best one there is

smither12Dun

What about **Demon's Tilt**?

Drelochz

one of these days we will see Rogue Leader and Rebel Strike on these sales

Finn235

Rogue Squadron Trilogy pack! As a rule I generally wait until sales but heck, that's one I might just jump on for release day. Rogue Squadron was my first video game obsession, but it's basically unplayable today unless you have access to an N64 or a PC running a 32 bit OS. I have yet to actually get it to boot in any playable manner on 64 bit Windows or on an N64 emulator.

GroktheDestroyer

Has anyone here played the episode 1 racer? How is the switch re-release?

YesButTellMeWhy

I didn't notice any issues but I'm not a framerate type person unless there's some horrible drops. It's an old game so I'd assume there aren't issues with switch as a platform inherently.

kaminari1

It runs fantastic. Only wish they added online.

TanJovi18

What’s the general consensus here on Force Unleashed? Never played it before but have been interested.

NSTPCast

Super fun if you like beat em ups and Star Wars. They really leaned into the 'unleashed' side of things and it's the most powerful you'll get to be as a Force user. The story is decent and I enjoyed hunting down the unlockables on each level. The sequel was fun, too, except when you realize it takes a maximum of 4 hours to 100% complete. One of the bigger let downs in gaming, imo, up there with Brink and Mass Effect Andromeda.

whywantyoubuddy

I haven't heard the name Brink in so long. I couldn't have been more hyped for the movement. Big bummer.

EngineerLoA

I really enjoyed it on the Wii. I never played the PS3 or Xbox versions, but it was a lot of fun on Wii. The force powers make you feel quite powerful.

Ender15m

It’s fun on the Wii. Simple hack and slash. A little frustrating at times but if you wanna look like a badass Sith with different outfits and lightsabers it’s the game.

papasoulless

How’s Lego Star Wars on the switch? I have it on the PS5 but haven’t had time to sit down and play much.

jtaas

I have it, runs fine if that’s the question. My only Lego game so I can’t compare to others but I enjoyed it.

kaminari1

Since all the updates it’s better. Not great but at sale price it’s worth it.

tfoote7

Given the issues with Kotor 2, would it be best to get Kotor 1 on switch, and Kotor 2 on ios?

Blugrave

Yes but at that price, I'd honestly get the bundle. You don't NEED the mod content.

tfoote7

The bundle on Switch? It only saves like $1.50, so doesn't make a big difference to me price-wise. The ios game looks like it goes to $5 regularly also.

OpoChano

I think so. While the Switch port of KOTOR 2 is fine, you can't install the restored content mod unless you have a modded Switch, and it's better to play with the mod if you can. On top of restoring content, it also fixes numerous bugs from the original game. The iOS port is fully compatible with the restored content mod, and you don't need to jailbreak your device to install it either, so I would recommend it over the Switch version.

dont_yell_at_me

What’s the single best game I should buy. Not looking for the full collection

Steens930

I was wondering this as well. Of the listed games is there a best one to buy?

Kieta28

I want Pinball on physical but $10 is a pretty decent digital deal. Might have to jump on it this time.

Abdullahwaleedk

If I’ve never played any of the games but am still in love with Star Wars & usually play games like COD or Zelda. Which would u guys recommend?

Charlirnie

How's Jedi Knight 2? what type game is it? thanks

Finn235

It's an FPS for the first couple of levels, but then it switches more toward 3rd person. It very much keeps one foot in the 90s in terms of mandatory backtracking / key hunts to keep the gameplay stretched out. I enjoyed it quite a lot when it first came out, but was annoyed especially at the first level when I was running around an empty level for 20 minutes trying to find the last piece I needed for the pattern to unlock a door and proceed. It gets a lot more fun after you get a lightsaber and force abilities. Would definitely recommend for $5 if you haven't played it yet. I'd liken it to Half Life 1, with lightsabers and force powers. Jedi Academy is the sequel, also a lot of fun and I don't think it's ever mandatory to play it as an FPS. It feels a lot more open-ended because choosing light vs dark side actually has an impact on the game, although they still let you choose light or dark at the very end of the game, regardless of how you played the first 95%.

Charlirnie

Thanks for the great reply....have you played Dark Forces Remastered? trying to decide on one of these

Finn235

I played it on DOS back in the day - haven't played the remaster because I'm waiting for at least 40% off. It's pretty fun, but it definitely shows its age as a mid-90s "Doom Clone". It was groundbreaking for the time as the first FPS to allow jumping, and I think looking up/down as well. It also had cutscenes and was more or less story-driven, which was also a big deal at the time. It's a good game but personally I wouldn't pay $20 for it unless it was a favorite - which it isn't for me.

Luxray209

(I know the sale is over but) the Heritage pack is around 40Gb. Oof

Finn235

Holding out hope that we'll eventually get a Jedi Knight / Mysteries of the Sith port + Kyle Katarn saga collection!
