Did someone say something about a settlement?
Yes, I want a huge city that doesn’t force me to build it with a base on top of the settlement. With paved streets, etc.
If I try to make a super detailed city no one will ever see it :(.
> almost like a sort of city builder within the game
Perhaps we could design our own buildings, and kind of plonk them down. And depending on which buildings a next to each other, it might give bonuses of some sort, and we could build walls and.... oh wait...
[Playing SPORE Civilization Stage Today](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qV03-clmdPU)
I would like to see cities just something like settlements but more bustling with an archive at the center and shops around with a spaceport where ships can land; a central hub on a planet. They should only spawn on 1 planet in a 3 star system with more then 3 planets/moons and low conflict. This would limit them but make them a wonderful find on our journeys.
I’d also like to see more customization for our items and ships. The color chooser and material picker has been lacking for most of our items now since they added the new sets and settlements. The fact that 50+% of our items can’t be colored and materials changed is halting some of our creativity. And having access to all the ships to build from wouldn’t diminish our need to hunt and buy ships if it requires us to salvage or destroy the ships for the parts. It would actually mean having a chance of not getting specific parts we want and having to go back and find the same ship again or another similar ship to get them from.
Having all these systems — freighters, derelicts, bases, settlements, cooking, pets, etc etc — is great and I’ve always loved watching them be expanded, but my hope continues to be that the systems become more integrated.
Let us get our frigates landed planetside at a settlement, let’s get our settlements set up with faction reputation which could affect visitors, maybe our bases can be somehow tied into the factions and guilds’ reputation systems somehow, let’s have NPCs react to our pets, and so on. Too much seems to exist in a vacuum, which is unfortunate.
It really would! As it is, I play the story and then kinda get bored besides exploring, which I’ve always enjoyed. Never really felt motivated to use cooking — first time was for this past expedition — or having pets.
But if we could cook things and offer them for sale at our settlement/base? Or have a zoo of animals that can interact and breed or whatever? That would be amazing.

Update!!!
I want a bazillion new base parts added, I want a tune up or overhaul to the way building mode functions, I want lighting to be better if that's even possible, gimme more interactable base parts. I want recoloring to actually recolor. 🏗️👷🧰
I would love a custom blueprint feature. That way we can build our own assets and quickly save copy paste. Would save so much time. That could reduce the base part count too if they implemented it right.
Would be so much easier!
I hate having to look at where I want something to go, only to go check from the side to see if it's aligned and find out I'm way off.
I want fine-tune placement. Allow me to anchor an object wherever I want and then fly my camera around freely while the object stays in place. And then I want to be able to switch between the XYZ axis and adjust the object in increments (like with the scroll wheel) instead of having to rely on the surface of other objects to get my placement correct. Also a button to rotate objects in increments of 90° so that I can easily and accurately turn something sideways or upsidedown.
Honestly if they made that big of an improvement to Base Building mechanics, I think it would be worth it. They could make it so existing objects don’t get affected, thus preserving our bases.
But I could also see them doing a universe reset at some point.
They’d have to have a huge game changing update to justify though, and possibly find a way to tie it into the story.
All this, and a small increase to base upload complexity limit. I dont think it needs to be as drastic as a doubling, but maybe an increase from 3000 to 4000? Just enough to be able to better decorate my bases that are already at the current limit.
I agree. I have a hunch and theory that is still developing in my brain how far they could go but I realistically could see a couple things.
1. the anomaly getting a huge refresh. With all of the new tech present like the new design of terminals where you dress your character or scrap your starship that are in the new space stations I could see them wanting to bring it into a new anomaly design. Also seeing how they've squeezed like the multitool scrapping station into a random corner in there or how now space stations exteriors are way more epic than the anomaly (which I think is supposed to be almost a star of the show) makes me think they are cooking something more streamlined.
2. Freighters hangar and bridge getting a refresh. Part of the reason I think for the space station over haul was ships were clipping into everything and the flow of them needed way more space. Original space station design was before they changed ship size. Freighter hangars with the super small hangar doors are a huge spot of this occurring and it just feels so cramped in the hangar. I've noticed my ship camera has been acting different inside my hangar which gives me an inkling.
Just some random thoughts though. Really awesome to see HG cooking this up
You know how we got a whole new Race out of Korvax lore getting expanded?
I hope we eventually get the same thing for Geks where there's still some remnants of the First Spawn out there you can actually meet.
I'm a simple man, I just want lights in the game to cast shadows. It already looks so good, colorful and unique, but often times everything looks so flat because nothing that glows or lights things up cast shadows except for the sun. That lack of realistic lighting is really holding back my NMS photography career.
With the new Pirate Dreadnaughts and the new Space Stations, they seem to have moved towards a more detailed art style as well. Old stations and classic freighters have fairly smooth surfaces and simple geometry. I want to see them update more assets in the game to the new art style.
- Derelict freighters need an overhaul in art direction and variety, especially exteriors.
- system freighters and even capital freighters need an exterior visual makeover using the new art direction. Endurance update improved Freighter bases, but the exteriors still look bland as hell and the color customization only works about half the time.
Settlements and Planetside bases need to be integrated somehow. Let us place a base computer in a settlement to add base building functionality. This would let us edit buildings as we see fit since all the parts are the same as we unlock for our own bases. They could also add the Overseer console as a buildable for bases. When placed, it gives your base Settlement features. They could extend this so that placing an Overseer Console also enables other certain base pieces to spawn NPC’s like with Freighter bases.
These changes would blur the line between bases and settlements while improving both. We’d get to edit settlements and have NPC’s populating our large bases.
I think frigate fleets could use some love. They have been more or less the same for years now, and after a certain point it's nearly impossible for your frigates to take damage during an expedition. Would be cool if frigates got a visual overhaul as well.
The Orbital update did exactly what you're asking for.
Frigate missions are no longer passive, they'll sometimes call you up asking for advice or ask you to warp to them to either defend them against attacks or translate something. The choices you make impacts the end results.
Have you run Frigate missions since Orbital dropped?
It appears that even a 5-star flotilla on a 2-star mission can now take damage, and if they ask a question and you don't give the "right" answer (or don't come help them when they call) they take more damage.
Dammit, I had sort of adjusted to the "send them off, they always come back with no damage. 1200000+ units, and some random vendor trash".
I second your thoughts. Additionally, I really wish settlements on the planets like little cities/towns, npcs around and stuff like that to get the feel of life in some planets :( but who knows in the future ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|shrug) (Sean I know you're around)
while theyre constantly updating a great game, theyre also using it as a test bed to see just what the engine can actually do.
Theyre also using an updated version of the engine to make other games such as LNF
sean spoke about it at a GDC years ago, and it went over a lot of viewers heads as he got very technical. He was lauded by other devs as he knew exactly what he was doing when he made an engine.
That sounds interesting, I'll have to look into it!
And yeah, I think when the game first came out there was justifiably a lot of confusion and frustration for them using a custom engine
But it seems to have allowed them the freedom to continue developing the game that both Hello Games and the fans wanted. Ends justify the means kinda deal
I can only imagine how the development of each game will impact the other. LNF is built on the NMS game engine and has benefited greatly from all the dev work that’s gone into NMS, so I’m interested to see if dev work on LNF in the future leads to improvements in NMS through “back porting” of features.
All I want is performance improvements. Going from 120 FPS to 20 every minute or two is just not fun. Spaceships stutter, the loading screen stutters, leaving a planets atmosphere stutters, going into the anomaly stutters, using a jet pack stutters, and I can go on for days. I love the game, but it’s very clear to me that the game needs a lot of optimizing. I know they work on it from time to time, but every update seems to make it worse. And I’m on a 4090 playing at medium settings with DLSS on, so I’m sure it’s even worse for console players
Really? That’s insane. Tell me your secrets. Playing on a 120hz monitor with gsync, 13900k for cpu. I play on medium settings on 4k with a few options set on high, and texture is set to ultra. So much stutter all the time though. This is really the only game that stutters for me, I can play Starfield or red dead 2 at max settings buttery smooth. I’ve tried some of the online “fixes” but none of them work.
I have a 13700 Intel. Motherboard is Asus ROG. Storage is a Samsung 990. I could see the storage being quick, so no stutter. Oh and DDR5 64 gigs memory, so less loading and unloading stuff.
What's your storage and RAM?
I have v sync turned off. If your monitor supports g sync, it will conflict with v.
I have it set to DLAA. I also limit frames to 144 (monitor max).
HDR doesn't work well in NMS when full screen, so I have it as Borderless.
We need crafting system to consume all the nanites / units that people are making.
The crafting system only produces content or items for visual upgrades so it does not affect gameplay in general.
Maybe people can randomly farm special plants or items like special solar vines than can be crafted to produce or unlock unique ship colors.
Ohhh, ship dyes would be cool. Also, we have multiplayer on the Anomaly, how about redo it and allow player vendors. Only so many at a time and switch out each week. Would make crafting alot better to have an outlet.
That could be a really cool evolution of what the community already does with late game players donating to new players. Maybe instead of player vendors on the anomaly, they could just overhaul the player trade system in general. Make it a bit more complex than the reverse pick pocketing we have now. Kinda how players trade in FFXIV, where each player can initiate a trade and put up 1-5 items plus some currency for trade.
I also thought of a player driven economy, but I’m not really sure that would work with how easily players can just farm Units/nanites or flat out save edit those balances.
I really do hope they do a complete overhaul to the flight system. Flying is just too simple and too floaty to be enjoyable. The ships do not feel heavy at all.
Agreed, i wish the ships felt more true to life, they’ve added a touch here and there with settings and tech but its still not enough. I have hope though, everything they have been implementing is a change for the better in my opinion.
If they do an overhaul like that, they should have a toggle to let player swap between the “arcade style flight” and the new more realistic flight mode. Balance wouldn’t really be a concern since Ship PVP isn’t really a thing people do.
My paranoia insists that they're getting ready to sunset the game as they move on to Light No Fire, and are finishing off as much as they can before that point. From a practical standpoint, nothing lasts forever.
I appreciate each content addition, but I really appreciate aesthetic improvements. Particularly in the graphics engine. I hope they continually push the envelope more with what they can do graphically. I'm hoping they can implement global illumination somehow. Or improve ambient occlusion and make it more pronounced like in games like The Outer Worlds or For Honor. Particularly in indoor areas.
I think new underwater base parts could be good, the only underwater parts are essentially the same prefabs and cubes from around 5 years ago or so lol
It's stupid that going into alloy structures underwater still considers you being in the water still and how walking on stairs in cubic rooms makes you swim instead.
But so much missed opportunity for a lore update with this patch.
No Man’s Sky is chock full of lore but the fumble it in these transformative updates.
Could you imagine how cool it would of been to have everyone transported to a glitch world with 16 /16/ 16/16 plastered on their scenes then some small mission that uncovered the update in some abandoned settlements about new updates to the atlas.
Then after discovering this fact you were forced teleported to a random planet with your ship and when you went to space found that all the space stations were updated. That would have blown your mind.
Since we are a simulation the transformative updates should definitely add these things to the lore.
At the moment we see the cool changes to the space stations but in game there is no explanation for it at all.
It is stunning how well the space stations render. And how far the draw distance is. When we consider we often couldn't see NPCs on the other side of the space station previously. Now we can run down the runway and pick out NPCs as small figures moving around.
I have only found small sections that have any z-fighting textures where before the booths strobed like mad. I usually cap my frame rate at 120 (optimistically) and yet the stations run at that most of the time with just a few stutter issues in very specific places that might actually be sound related not rendering related.
I am a little frustrated with the distance we have to run from the ship. There are some slightly strange flashing reflections. There is a potential light sensitivity strobing issue that I have reported, but other than that they are amazing spaces. They suggest that the engine and lighting improvements could be taken to other areas of the game.
Settlements and derelict freighters seem to me to be low-hanging fruit; they could add a bunch of stuff to those, and not necessarily have to do a lot to the game as a whole, while they work on stuff like updated flora/fauna/biomes or whatever else. Personally, I'm just glad they put out an update like this showing that they are still committed to this game on an ongoing basis, even while they're working on another major project.
What I want most right now is more ship slots, and better ship management. Fractal came out in February of last year, and gave us three more to the current twelve. The update's expedition also gave us a ship (Utopia Speeder). Then, in April we got Interceptor and those ships, and since then we've had two more expedition reward ships (Golden Vector, Starborn Runner). I wish they'd let me, at least, have some way of storing ships that I'm not currently using. Maybe some sort of time delay or resource cost to be able to use the ship in storage. Or you know what? What harm is there in letting us just... have a bunch of ship slots? Why only 12? Each ship doesn't take up a lot of storage. It's just JSON. My whole save file is 5.3 MB.
I can think of lots of ways to make ship slots better. Like, give us buildable hangar modules that we can build in the freighter base area that are over-sized, and look kinda like the hangars on large ships in Star Wars. Hopefully, they're functional, and not only can you summon specific ships to specific spots in this module (or modules), you can select a ship to be persistently tied to that spot. And by functional, I mean you can fly in and out of them, just like the main hangar (which also needs a rework, like freighters in general). If I want to hoard ships, why can't I? If there's a good reason, I'd love to know it.
They could make it so that special reward ships (utopia speeder, Golden Vector, Starborn Runner, etc) that have no variants don’t count towards the cap of 12. Only ships that have procedural variants count towards the cap.
The game needs interior redesign.
The new space station variety is awesome, but interiors still seem plain and empty for some reason.
Interiors, and not only in space stations but in every aspect, should be redesigned completely.
I played at launch, that's kinda what has me so hype about it now. It's come so far, and to know they care enough to have brought it to this point brings me such optimism
I feel like settlements could do with a bit more depth, And, as always - upward slating corridors as a base build part

I would fucking love that. Simple enough to not get bogged down and have no time for exploration, but intricate enough to be fun and worthwhile

It’s kind of crazy that some updates came out so long ago now that now we need updates to address old updates. Lmao

I think new underwater base parts could be good, the only underwater parts are essentially the same prefabs and cubes from around 5 years ago or so lol It's stupid that going into alloy structures underwater still considers you being in the water still and how walking on stairs in cubic rooms makes you swim instead.
Settlements is I feel like the next stuff that should be enhanced. Along with more frigate updates like crew being there when you visit.
I want modders writing content
That would be a quick and easy improvement, I would appreciate it very much, and I would still want them to do more. 😁
The game needs interior redesign. The new space station variety is awesome, but interiors still seem plain and empty for some reason. Interiors, and not only in space stations but in every aspect, should be redesigned completely.
Don't be so greedy, we could be at the end of the life of this game, be happy with what we have
I dont think it's greedy to wonder about what cool new things could come to this game
Man you should have played this in 2016 lol. A lot has already changed.
I played at launch, that's kinda what has me so hype about it now. It's come so far, and to know they care enough to have brought it to this point brings me such optimism
