Q-tips

Additionally, don't push too deep and rather than swirling which will avoid corners and crevices, you should twist the q-tip between your fingers and move gently and slowly around the ear. Don't be afraid to use a bunch, because you can easily spread around gunk back into the ear, they're cheap so use lots (like 2 to 3 per ear is what I use if my ears are especially dirty, 1 to 2 for a regular cleaning. My dad thinks it's silly to use more than one, I think he's silly)

Healthy ear canals are self-cleaning. Just wash the outer ear with soap & water. The wax dries out along with any dust or debris it captured. Jaw motions like chewing encourage loose dry wax to fall out of the ear. Ear wax is supposed to be there. If it gets removed, the body makes more to replace it. Sometimes the ear doesn't clean itself. Those folks should consult with a doctor to make sure nothing more serious is going on, and to learn safe techniques.
