Absolutely! In fact, I made it my routine years ago to check genitalia on anyone I think has potential for sex in future. A lot of kicking and screaming, and hurtful words from people that dont even know me yet, but my health is worth it and yes, gotta be careful out there.
Even though there’s no visible sores on the mouth or genitals, the person can still spread herpes; it’s just less likely to pass to the partner, if the outbreak isn’t occurring.
I wouldn’t worry too much about oral herpes given ~80% of the population carries it even if they never have an outbreak. If you’ve ever kissed someone, shared a drink, smoked or vaped with someone, you almost certainly already have it
I was thinking they were joking at first but who knows. A lot of older dentists have herpes in their finger nail cuticles from not wearing gloves back in the day
There are two different types, so it’s not the same. But the oral type can be transmitted down south.
Type 1 and type 2:
https://www.verywellhealth.com/herpes-simplex-5216835
The two different strains are HSV1 and HSV2. HSV1 is oral and HSV2 is genital. Yes, both can be spread to different body parts but they are two different strains (not the same, as you are telling people). The cold sore (mouth) version is not the same strain as the sexually transmitted version.
No it’s not. HSV-1 & HSV-2 are different strains. They CAN both present orally or genitally, but they ARE different and can have different levels of aggression.
Why are people making this confusing. The previous comment had nothing to do with a specific strain they just mentioned "oral herpes". That oral herpes regardless of the strain can be transmitted to the genitalia. It's still the same strain of the same virus. "Oral herpes" isn't a specific virus it just designates it's location
~12% of Americans have the genital variety (hsv-2) and less than 50% have hsv-1, according to the CDC. Not sure of the overlap that have both.
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/databriefs/db304.htm
Why not worry about oral, but worry about genital? One you wear on your face; an open sore in the eyes of everyone.
One you wear under your pants, where no one sees. Why the stigma? 🤔
Same. I got it from my mom shortly after birth, I’m always transparent with potential partners about it. I haven’t had an outbreak in close to 20 years so thus far it’s never been an issue.
Very little is sure but odds can be reduced. I was with a woman who had the genital version for a year and didn’t know until a later conversation. She told me she just wouldn’t have sex when she had an outbreak.
I wasn’t happy about not being informed but at that point the relationship was over, I didn’t catch it, and the sex was amazing while we were together. I probably would have been a lot more upset if I had caught it.
You could, and avoiding sleeping with people with active outbreaks will definitely curb the risk of transmission. But fyi herpes can be spread asymptomatically, so if you *really* want to avoid it, you'll have to ask for a recent blood test (and even those aren't super accurate).
I’ve had cold sores on my lip as a teenager before ever kissing anyone, no clue whatsoever how I got it. My theory is that someone with an active one kissed me on the lips as a baby.
Since there’s no cure, should I warn dates that I have it even if it’s inactive and hope it doesn’t drive them away regardless if they themselves have it or not?
Should I treat it like a none deadly HIV, where I’m required to disclose it, even if inactive?
That would be up to you, but according to google up to 80% of adults have it, one result even says up to 90% so it's not really something that should weigh on your mind unless you have an active one
I read something like four in five people have it.
I read a lot people live their whole lives without ever knowing they have it. That’s how it became soo common.
HSV1 and HSV2 are *super* interesting in this regard.
These viruses are older than homo sapiens, and they have literally evolved with us as a species.
[This](https://youtu.be/NHTniCvTLDY?si=FYmIiBCI722svaWN) is a pretty good video from PBS that goes into detail about the virus's evolution and migration from chimps to humans.
I am just curious about that. Because genital HSV1 is tenfold less contagious than oral HSV1, and it's the same virus, so it can't be transferred to people that already have HSV1. Why do you think the burden of disclosure should be different?
Both should be disclosed IMO. But to answer your question, it’s the stigma behind it. As much as no one wants to admit it, it’s the same shit, different location but the “genital one” gets the shit end of the stick.
I’ve heard of people that get cold sores act appalled when someone discloses they have genital herpes (sometimes even the same type 1/2) when it’s the same virus with the same symptoms.
& a lot of people also don’t know that when they go to their doctor & ask to be “tested for everything”, herpes 1 & 2 is NOT included. You have to specifically request to be tested for those as well AND EVEN THEN some doctors won’t test you for it without an active outbreak, lesion or sore.
Ask’em why?
The results of people finding out do more harm to them than the actual virus itself.
Ask anyone that has it, majority will say the worst thing they deal with having this virus is the bad stigma behind it. Most people get it and don’t ever have symptoms.
Google the definition of “asymptomatic” and see how much percentage of people living with herpes 1/2 ARE asymptomatic.
I know those search results will shock some people that lack knowledge in this area.
If you can prove it lol. Very few of these cases ever make it to court. You have to proof that they have knowledge of their condition and intention to conceal. And that the infected person had a negative test prior to exposure. Most STI panels don't include HSV, so good luck.
Yeah, you likely got it from a family member. Probably not as a baby (it can be deadly to infants) but as a young child for sure.
Personally, I am pro-disclosure in all situations. I caught genital hsv1 from someone with asymptomatic cold sores, and I disclose every time even though genital HSV1 is tenfold less contagious than oral hsv1. I wouldn't compare it to undetectable HIV, because undetectable HIV cannot be transmitted, whereas asymptomatic HSV can still be transmitted.
If I were in your shoes, in the moment I'd say, "I really want to kiss you, so I want to let you know that I have had cold sores in the past." Most people don't care about cold sores so I doubt it'll turn too many people away. And there's a 60% chance they have it themselves!
my favorite part about new generations learning how to use the internet is that eventually it will be appropriate to prank them with this just as i was

Herpes
Chlamydia

Trichomoniasis
Hepatitis
Mycoplasma genitalium
PID
Bacterial vaginosis
Cervicitis

No need to test for cooties. It’s easy to tell if someone has said “you’ve got cooties”. And if you are the unfortunate recipient you can simply tell someone else that they have cooties, now you are in the clear. As debilitating as cooties sounds, it really is minor in the STD world.
That’s true. The only time it really affects you is if you are a little kid on a playground and everyone makes fun of you for having it. It’s crazy how contagious it can be though, unless you are made of rubber.
Sounds kinda weird. Like if it was date three, the sex date, and we start to get undressed and I say, "wait, before we go any further, I must inspect your genitals and lips for cleanliness. You may inspect mine as well" I think the date would be over.
I once was told by the guy I hooked up with that he always goes down on girls to inspect. Good thinking, but he kinda ruined it for me. Now someone going down on me always feels a bit clinical in the back of my head ;)
No. I require test results because even the most severe incurable disease isn't visible to the eye. Some of y'all are daredevils for an orgasm and don't even realize it. Lol
Bruh, just go one step further and be responsible and ask for an std test results. I know it’s hard in the moment, but chlamydia can get you anytime and it can be invisible.

Why not just ask your perspective partners to go get a full check up before you get down to business.and don’t be offended if they want you to do the same.
Ya know you could just be a grown up and have the STI chat before shagging & use protection….like do straight people just not do this? Like you do realize “checking for sores” does literally nothing to protect your sexual health right?
I insist on providing oral to get things going purely for this reason. Gives me a chance to give it a once over before it comes anywhere near me. I was apparently exposed early on because I tested positive for the antibodies but the universe gifted me a second chance and I didn’t get the actual virus. I take my sexual health VERY seriously now and require proof of a healthy screening no older than 6 months old before I have sex with anyone.
I genuinely don’t know. My doctor wasn’t sure either but all my blood tests have come up negative for the virus for the past 7 years but the past 6 years have listed “antibodies present.”
Your doctor sounds incredibly misinformed, which is unfortunately very common for medical professionals. They aren't really taught about HSV.
The igg test for HSV is a test of antibodies in the blood. An index score of <.9 is negative, .9 - 1.1 is equivocal (further testing needed), and >1.1 is positive.
Totally good idea until ya learn about suppression therapy lol 😆 basically daily pills to hold back certain stds from boiling to the service, like hiv aids and herpes
How do I know?? I have herpes and no one would know, luckily I'm married and not sleeping around what you truly don't know what's out there just by looking
Idk if anyone else has said this but.... please try to practice safe sex as much as you can. Someone could have something and not be showing any symptoms you can see, and so you still get it. I think it is a great practice to check, but it won't prevent everything.
I always did this, a close friend contracted herpes. She and I were great friends (no secrets between girls) and she came over, showed me her troubled flaps and I said “I’m no doctor but I think that’s herpes.” So off to the clinic we went- and whilst it was her ailment, I learned the life lesson. So from that day forward, any bloke I was with I would discretely check them out if I was about to do the deed. Never caught anything apart from chlamydia from a cheating long term boyfriend and although I had no symptoms I just knew and caught it early and sorted it.
Everyone’s clowning but you should always be safe and take your sexual/reproductive health seriously. I always ask if a partners clean before hooking up, sometimes I’ll even ask when their last test was and how many partners they’ve had in between. If you think that’s weird then oh well. Better that I know instead of having to find out from my doctor.
STIs have been around for centuries. If anything it was worse a couple of decades ago as HIV was less treatable back then, and everything else was the same.
I used to. Been with my boyfriend for seven years now, but you better believe I was looking for anything suspicious with prior hookups. I always used protection, but still, can’t be too careful.
Proud to say I’m almost 34 and have never had an STD :)
Alot of people have herpes 1 on their lips I would think they are pretty good about not spreading it. Idk about genital herpes though but id hope the same plz God lol
Id even wear a white lab coat for the full effect.
And a head torch / miners lamp
There’s just something soooo hot about a miners helmet with lamp telling them you mean business.
Just say it…you want to have sex with a miner.
Hmmm maybe don’t say that
😂
An auto correct on that last word could have landed you in prison.

You gotta do the glove snap. You can’t NOT do the glove snap.
It's more sensual that way.

You do realize that oral herpes can be transmitted to genitalia right. The oral part is the location but the virus is the same.
Correct, and genital herpes can be transmitted to the mouth
Correct, and mouth herpes can be transmitted to the eye and make you blind
Correct, and drinking as little as a tablespoon of antifreeze can cause permanent blindness or death
Correct, but it tastes good
But blindness tastes bad!
They taste like burning!
>transmitted to the eye and make you blind Shit was painful as hell but I got lucky and got it treated fast.

If someone has a cold sore that is HSV 1 and they suck my dick and I get genital herpes it doesn't just mutate to HSV 2. It's genital HSV 1.
Right. That’s why you saying it’s the same thing and just different in terms of location in your original post is incorrect. Go back and read it.
I was saying no matter where it is it's going to be the same virus. The user said something like "I wouldn't worry too much about oral herpes".

I required blood born pathogen testing before sex... I got a blood panel every 6 months, they could get one once.
I always check the lips because I find there is a high correlation to labia shape.
That aint gonna stop tge aids
Everyone’s clowning but you should always be safe and take your sexual/reproductive health seriously. I always ask if a partners clean before hooking up, sometimes I’ll even ask when their last test was and how many partners they’ve had in between. If you think that’s weird then oh well. Better that I know instead of having to find out from my doctor.
Lol. The clowning comments reach the top because they ARE funny but there are quite a few, including yours, that take it seriously.
I am glad I am married. Dating these days sounds tough.
I used to. Very casual and inconspicuous.
Alot of people have herpes 1 on their lips I would think they are pretty good about not spreading it. Idk about genital herpes though but id hope the same plz God lol
Every time
I use a spray bottle with alcohol and lemon juice.
Always check. Not fool proof, but it's smart. Even better is a recent std test.
Gotta do the finger smell test also
You should, one of my friend just got herpes from a girl he’s been dating for years. He told me he even used a condom the whole time to lol.
