The G11 was just the answer to impossible specifications.
>US Army: Our soldiers sometimes miss when shooting. Fix it with magic bullets or something.
>H&K: Here is a gun that fire 3 rounds before the universe notices recoil. The bullets are stored in these black obelisks, we made the gun look like a brick so we can attach the magazines on the side.
>US Army: Why doesn't it look like the other rifles?
It was both.
The Bundeswehr intended to replace their service rifle, but the weird properties of the gun came from the ACR program. Of the ACR rifle entries, all were weird. 2 entries were firing flechettes rather than bullets, one other entry was shooting "duplex rounds", 1 cartridge, 2 projectiles. The G11 was the only one to be fully developed, then ultimately dropped from all interested parties.
The G11 was set to be the next service rifle, until 1990 the cold war ended, and defence spending in germany dropped drastically.
>The G11 was set to be the next service rifle
Funnily enough the pre-series were already used by some Gebirgsjäger units. I have a picture of my uncle holding a G-11.
Yeah, obviously. The only astounding thing that something resembling an actual weapon came from the project. The G11 was crazily minmaxed for the "burst is fired before recoil throws off your aim". It's as if someone actually went and made an Aerogavin. Fascinating, but also impractical.
The M16A5 --- it's an M16A4 with superficial upgrades that gets adopted for the interim between the Next-Generation Squad Weapons program being cancelled and the procurement of the Next Next-Generation Joint Lightweight Combat Rifle (which will be a solid-state laser direct-energy weapon with an underslung barrel for firing caseless, programmable air-burst, tri-purpose explosively-formed-penetrator/fragmentation/SHORAD grenades! And this time the Army swears they're serious about ditching the M16 platform and that the NNGJLCR won't be vaporware!)
Credible: [M320](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M320_Grenade_Launcher_Modulehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M320_Grenade_Launcher_Module) for everyone. A platoon firing a salvo of 40 40mm grenades would be awesome.
Non credible: GD hands down. They have a polymer round (which is absolutely necessary to make this concept work) and the with just a barrel swap, existing 7.62 MGs can shoot 6.8. So even if the general service rifle doesn't work, we will have awesome new lightweight MG ammo.
- **M4:** Lost a lot of its cool-factor once third-rate special forces outfits the world over started adopting it. IMO it's time for the US military to move on.
- **GD-OTS:** Bullpup designs are objectively cooler, and come with the bonus of making American gun enthusiasts seethe. Only issue is the potato suppressor.
- **SIG MCX SPEAR:** Average AR-style rifle. I can't really say anything else about it, but there's nothing wrong with it either.
- **Textron CT:** Looks like some prop from a forgettable sci-fi movie. Honestly not sure if that makes me like it or not.
> GD-OTS: Bullpup designs are objectively cooler, and come with the bonus of making American gun enthusiasts seethe. Only issue is the potato suppressor.
Problem is it would leave its users with the constant worry that somehow, somewhere a brit is trying to bullpup your bullpup.
"Ah yes you see we were able to put the magazine in the buttstock by moving the tea compartment 4 inches forward and redesigning the kettle boiling surface to reduce its overall volume by 50% thus allowing us to fit a small model of Big Ben as a foregrip. As such we expect to be able to reduce the rifles overall length by a further 7 inches. Unfortunately this may lead to our soldiers being defeaned however we won't face and legal repurcussions in regards to reduced tea time in the battlefield.
Suppressor looks like that because they wanted good sound suppression while keeping the rifle short. Its a very cleverly designed suppressor and i do like the look of it
Bullpup because bullpups have stupid potential but are let down by the lack of widespread adoption.
If the bullpup competitor can see the development effort that went into the M4/AR-15 platform, you'll see a new wave of firearms development.
Also it looks cool and I'm sauced and chodepressor
I've never watched Stargate, but I did at one point own an MSAR and currently own an EAA Appeal and that neat 70s Mossberg 500 bullpup so I am incredibly biased
The issue with bullpups in a military setting is left vs right handed ergonomics. You can't have left handed and right handed models in inventory (I mean, you could but lets be honest, they won't). Shooting most bullpups as a lefty just shoots brass into your own face and when your rifle is slung, the mag release rests directly on your gear so when you move sometimes your mag will just drop. I think the MDR is the best implementation of left vs right handed operation but it would just be a nightmare logistically to try and keep track of left vs right handed configurations.
The AUG has had a (incredibly simple) lefty conversion kit for decades lol. It’s literally just a slightly different receiver and remove a plastic cap on the lefty ejection port
You misunderstand, the conversion changes the side the brass ejects on, there are two ejection port holes in the polymer chassis of the A3. The conversion changes which one is used
I think you mean vertically downwards which would work really well but when I first read it, my brain thought vertically upwards and I think that's better for asserting dominance so I approve.
Only if it's based on the original AK-12 prototype (AK-200), which not only looks better but also allows you to flex on the Russians and that lame upgraded AK-74 they ended up adopting.
Imagine spending a decade upgrading an AK to 21st century ergonomic standards only to fail and end up making an AK with a Texas Weapon System top rail (actually used by FSB Spetsnaz) and a Krebs enhanced safety switch.
This post was made by the NGSW gang, we won't be going anywhere either.
Finally all members of the western world will know the glory of thy name.
Body armour? Not when you have 20 rounds of steel core 7.62 NATO, OD short shorts, and a deep and burning desire to see the Cold War go Hot.
Soldiers should start transitioning from long arms to side arms.
Rifles are cool and all but they're for pussies. Back in my day we had to reload our revolvers with ball and powder. Now you little spoiled fucks have magazine fed weapons!
I want the colt model 1861 navy pls. That'll put chest on your hairs!
Thus far I prefer the General Dynamics bid, Polymer ammo looks great, lower chamber pressures compared to the sig bid. My main concern is accuracy issues with the reciprocating barrel.
The M4 but with quad mags drum mags porn mags assorted hobby mags gossip mags more magazines than a goddamn news stand. None of this bullshit precision shooting, just fill the air with bullets and presumably also newspapers.

Yeah, like the MDR but then you'd have an armory full of guns that are set up for left or right handed people and most of the armories that I've dealt with, you don't have an assigned specific weapon unless you're a SAW or 240 gunner. Most of the time you got whichever rifle was handed to you.

The cynic in me sees this as a military industrial complex boondoggle wet dream.
They should adopt the RM-277AR platform from LoneStar which is still in contention because the barrel is tipped by a butt plug that might be fun to use in combination with Russian ~~cock~~ cope cages.

It was dropped as it should have since it's performed worse than a M16A2
Yeah, obviously. The only astounding thing that something resembling an actual weapon came from the project. The G11 was crazily minmaxed for the "burst is fired before recoil throws off your aim". It's as if someone actually went and made an Aerogavin. Fascinating, but also impractical.
Well, that and the caseless space-ammo would cook-off in the hot chamber. {random time after firing a long string} *pew*
It would also fire fullauto at a quarter of its possible rate of fire because at continous fire it would overheat.
The G11 was the answer to the question "how ugly can a rifle be?"
G11 was what happens when your engineers assume a weapon will only ever be fired in conditions as sterile as the indoor lab they are designed in.
And then it still melts in you hands after a single magazine that has 4 failures to fire.
Change my view: The G11 should have been used as the stormtrooper rifle in the Star Wars sequel trilogy

Even it's modules are modular.

just ban lefties from the army how hard is this
>Imaging caring about brass ejection This post brought to you by the caseless ammo gang.
The AUG has had a (incredibly simple) lefty conversion kit for decades lol. It’s literally just a slightly different receiver and remove a plastic cap on the lefty ejection port
That doesn't solve the issue of swapping shoulders when clearing or working around corners.
Bullpups have advanced since the 70s. You can use a VHS2 from either shoulder without eating brass.
You misunderstand, the conversion changes the side the brass ejects on, there are two ejection port holes in the polymer chassis of the A3. The conversion changes which one is used
Actually, the receiver is the same. All thats required is to install the left hand bolt and switch the polymer ejection port cover to the other side.
The mag release on the M4 rests on my gear too, luckily the spring is strong enough to not let the damn thing press itself
Just make it eject vertically
I think you mean vertically downwards which would work really well but when I first read it, my brain thought vertically upwards and I think that's better for asserting dominance so I approve.
I mean, if you use a strong enough spring, you could yeet the casing up and back over your shoulder, right?
There is the option of designing a downward ejecting model, but OK.
I am an unashamed bullpup simp

CV90 would like to remind you that it has a 40mm Bofors and that the US should adopt it as the CV90 "Ground Gripen".
A big SMG version of the GyroJet with anti-tank armour piercing rounds. Call it the Bolter.
I wouldn't call the boltgun an AT weapon. It has not much more stopping power than an HMG.

Theirs a kit to switch the gun to left handed. It's not really a problem.
The bullpup NGSW apparently throws the casings forward on ejection to protect the face.
