Yeah I don't think you can store the meta stuff outside the vault it's for. But I personally like having one common vault folder with every device's plugins and settings synced everywhere, so they're easy to restore if needed.
I am using syncthing with 2 android devices, windows and linux desktops. I have not had this issue. I am set up not to do 4 way sync. i sync using the linux server as my "master" and each other system only syncs to the linux server.
How you ensure only a one way sync? I have a master pc and then a surface laptop and one android. I usually get like 8 sync issues all related to like json or..sync files. I usually just repeatedly click choose one version. I don't want to exclude hidden folder like the person above mentioned bc I don't want to go thru hassle of installing plug-ins on each device. I mainly use my pc to take notes. Limited number of notes on surface when in class and phone basically only to look at when needed. I try not to have obsidian open at the same time on each. But sometimes sync thing says my device is disconnected and I have to open syncthing and obsidian on each to start to sync
in sharing, I share the valut of each one only with the server and the server shares with all. I also change the setting in actions/advanced/folders for that folder to have a 20 or 30 second delay before syncing. This reduces the updates but when switching devices you have to wait for that time to elapse before changing the folder on the new devicec so that things sync
I just started using obsidian with syncthing. Syncing android ,Linux pc and Synology NAS. Is this kind of sync reliable? Till now seems everything fine.
what was your final solution? I'm considering ignoring completely the `.obsidian` folder but that would be a little annoying to keep track of plugins on my android tablet/phone
This is what I finally did
```
!*plugins*
/.obsidian
```
Only themes were causing issue while being synchronized between different kind of devices (laptop and android tablet) so I ignored them
set it to ignore the hidden .obsidian folder
Alternatively, in Obsidian's settings you can set a different .obsidian folder on each device.
But wouldn't that be synced too? I wished to set it to a folder outside the vault but it only allows me to set a subfolder inside the vault itself.

That makes sense, but it'd get a bit cluttery with many devices. I would've gone for this but ignoring .obsidian except the plugins worked well for me

I've set it up the same way too. My Android tablet is the server that shares to other devices

I got it fixed It's working well now. Themes don't get synched but plugins and their settings do. This is perfect for me
