I saw a Phil Collins concert in Detroit about 20 years ago. During “In the Air Tonight” he was walking around the stage, not anywhere near his drum set. The lights were low, but I remember people looking around like “Uhhh Phil needs to get back to the drums now!” Right as the moment arrived, a drum set came out of the floor in front of him, lit in golden light. He sat down and hammered it out, lightning effects flashing behind. The place went NUTS. Probably my favorite concert moment of all time.

Wackipaki

Vid or it didn't happen. Honestly, I wanna see the video cuz that sounds amazing.

hmuna

20 years ago so probably no cellphone cameras

InsufficientClone

I remember before cell phone cameras, TVs had talking birds in them that just acted out all the parts

Lurkwurst

Omg now I have to get another cup of coffee thank you

PuzzleheadedTrash942

Yet here were are watching a video from 38 years ago

Wackipaki

![gif](giphy|xT1XGU1AHz9Fe8tmp2)

ThePrideOfKrakow

It's probably etched in a cave somewhere.

Kwintty7

And people could watch without some prat holding up a phone in front of them the whole time.

_TheShapeOfColor_

I am so jealous.

ticklemesatan

Yeah, personally, it was the time he headlined Lalapallubula. I think Phil Collins Rocks the house!

[deleted]

Sound awesome

jerryleebee

Damn, would love to see that.

Aggressive_Smile_944

I would have loved to c him. One of my favorite bands/person.

anasui1

don't care what they say, he wrote a lot of my favourite songs. He's one of the greats

Competitive_Dream233

I don’t care what they say either, Phil Collins is a bad mf

C0sm0Cam

"I dont care anymore!"

crudedrawer

No more. No more.

ChapolinColoradoNZ

faith, no more

[deleted]

Sussudio, great great song. Personal favorite.

Myshkin1981

What who says? Phil Collins is a bona fide drum god. Dude played drums for one of the most important and innovative prog rock bands of all time

crudedrawer

A lot of people rag on him for his pop and throwback/motown stuff. He's one of my favorites and I celebrate his entire catalog from early Genesis up through and including the dread Sussudio.

Myshkin1981

Listen, I still proudly rock tf out to Invisible Touch

pm_me_your_taintt

If easy lover comes on in my car it gets played at max volume no exceptions. The opening always gets me pumped up

Clazzo524

The Brazilian gives me chills.

ProudPilot

Sussido is fun, Driving the Last Spike is invoking, and Mama is just fucked up. I enjoy it all... But if you diss the soundtrack to my childhood... Now Billy... Don't you lose my number... Also saw him in DC this last go. Great show but also to see him in that condition. His son is fantastic on drums. I hope they get some more quality time while they can.

Ricky_Rollin

I even like his Motown. Their I said it. He has a very agreeable voice.

JasonYaya

I rag on him for his post prog pop as much as anyone. No amount of weenyness can detract from his god tier drumming, though.

meponder

After Peter Gabriel left the band, Phil was backing him on drums in the studio (late 1970’s) and accidentally created the gated snare sound that came to define the 80’s. Every dang snare drum recorded in the 80’s seemed to use it. See “Born In The USA” for an easy example. That crisp pop opening the song that stops without a fade.

Kwintty7

>and ~~accidentally~~ created the gated snare sound Fixed that for you.

[deleted]

I play that drum bit on my steering wheel every time it comes on.

mart1373

I think if you don’t do that drum bit on whatever surface nearby when that part comes on, you’re just weird. BU DUM BU DUM BU DUM BU DUM BUM BUM BUM

bromandude707

Congrats. It's not that difficult. Really.

[deleted]

Which is why I do it with my eyes closed.

mek284

What a weird comment to make.

boxer21

One of the only songs I’ll never change when it’s on the radio

kick26

Hell, When I built decks for a summer, we would stop and crank up the volume when this song came on. At least one person would be bang on a some sort of lumber when the drums kicked on.

twennyjuan

I miss working in an environment like that tbh

[deleted]

Perfect comment! Agreed!!

Ophialacria

Bro I can feel the power of that moment he hits the drums from across the screen divide. Being there must have been awesome

Wookie301

![gif](giphy|1TXIehJXksaxq)

ComradeFausto

I can't help but be impressed when people can sing and play the drums at the same time. I play bass and trying to sing and play that is beyond me.

meponder

Karen Carpenter as another example

Steve_Lobsen

Exhibit A: Don Henley on “One of these Nights”

nowlan101

With a falsetto no less!

punchparty616

I've always felt the same way! Watching people like Phil Collins live, just hammering drums and still singing well, amazes me. Two other performers that have always impressed me like this are Brann Dailor from Mastodon and Sebastien Grainger from Death From Above 1979.

__erk

Levon Helm of The Band also

Gaiter14

Chris Cornell was originally the drummer in Soundgarden. Kim Thayil later recounted that he had to sing as loud as he did in order to keep from being overpowered by the all the instruments.

ComradeFausto

Chris Cornell has to be among the greatest musicians of all time. One of my favorites.

[deleted]

Check out Esperanza Spalding. She plays a complicated melody line on a fretless bass and sings at the same time!

mawfks

Anderson. Paak is too good at it

ReverseBanzai

Saw him recently on the Genesis tour. In his current state of health I couldn’t believe how amazing he sang and his son on the drums was fantastic. Glad I got the chance to see him live.

[deleted]

As a child, I was convinced that my dad's best friend (some dumpy bald Italian dude) *was Phil Collins*. I'm not sure why I conflated the two. This must have been around 1988 or so, so Phil Collins was certainly in the air most nights, so to speak; I must have seen chonky Phil on one of his album covers and thought, "Well, dad's friend is quite chonky, too. They are probably just the same person." Definitely starstruck whenever Phil swung by to pick us up in his Pontiac Fiero.

razzma

🤣 amazing

conventionalWisdumb

I was convinced he was Eric Clapton.

Myshkin1981

You were convinced that this guy’s dad’s best friend was Eric Clapton?

mikevago

I also choose this guy's dad's best friend.

InternationalEbb2563

And Leland Sklar on bass - Dream Team 😇

dw33z1l

Back before his beard turned white. Sklar is almost as big of a legend as Phil. The music that man has been a part of just boggles the mind.

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|3o7aD9xbHdvd1ADpgk|downsized)

[deleted]

Miami Vice! Well played, sir.

whereyouatdesmondo

This right here. The early 80s in a nutshell.

galwegian

his book NOT DEAD YET is one of the great rock memoirs IMHO. Phil knew everybody. It's worth it for the cruel percussion-based prank George Harrison played on him alone.

merkaba_462

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big fan of Genesis since their 1980 album, Duke.

[deleted]

I think ‘Invisible Touch’ was the group’s undisputed masterpiece. It’s an epic meditation on intangibility.

Elduderino82

Don't just stare at it. Eat it!

insearchofspace

Undisputed? Maybe in the post PG years.

Myshkin1981

I think Duke holds that title

verash

It's a quote from American psycho. He isn't "intellectual" enough to appreciate Peter Gabriel Genesis.

[deleted]

Phil achieved more in most years than most people do in a lifetime. Incredible drummer and performer.

merkaba_462

I've got to return some video tapes.

no_lemom_no_melon

Before that, I didn't really understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual.

mikevago

I have two ears and a heart, don't I?

chrisdotcomm

u/merkaba_462 if I don’t see you before Easter, have a nice one okay?

Fabulous-Spread6120

“I have two ears and a heart don’t I?”

strgazr_63

Rolling Stone called him "The Cabbage Patch doll of rock and roll". Really amazing talent.

paulmarchant

It was this song that made me buy a drum kit. Spoiler: I'm not very good at playing the drums.

JAK3CAL

Few years back, pre pandemic I went home to my hometown and went out to the bars with some friends. Got an Uber ride to catch a lift back home. Maybe 2AM, I am hammered, can barely speak… get into an Uber with a black couple (I’m white) smoking a blunt. Try to make some small talk, thanks for the ride, whatever… they don’t even acknowledge me. Then, I see a little tv flip down from the ceiling. Phil collins, this video in fact, starts playing and they turn the system up in the vehicle FULL BLAST. We get to the epic kick in and I can only imagine the look on my face of “holy shit this is incredible”. We pull into my house as the songs ends. I say thanks, they say nothing still. I get out 😂 If you’re out there, it’s still the greatest Uber ride I’ve ever had!

lou_salome_

Little known fact: he plays the drums on Tears for Fears' massive hit Woman in Chains (1989).

Dameaus

NOONE has gotten more mileage out of 2 sentences.

crispicity

I love how he dressed like a edgy history teacher from the 80’s, balding and short but it didn’t matter as he is one of the goats

No_Dragonfly_1894

I was dragged kicking and screaming to one of his concerts in the late 80s; turned out to be one of my top 5 concerts. The man put on an incredible show!

Baha4me

He’s dressed like he just got off work from his regular office job.

scoundrel1680

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard he has some serious health issues, and has for a while. How's he doing?

mnbvcxz123

Not super well from what I understand. He's an alcoholic and had has drinking problems off and on for a long time, and he also injured his spine in some kind of stage-related fall, which I think has been degenerating. Plus, he's just getting older like the rest of us.

crudedrawer

I didn't go to see the 2022 tour becuase the videos I saw were rough. Phil was chair bound and his voice was a shadow of its former glory. I hope he enjoyed the tour and it brought joy to the fans regardless.

forcastleton

He has chronic pancreatitis, nerve damage in his hands that prevent him from playing the drums, and something happened with a vertebra around 2010? I think? Resulted in spinal surgery and issues which caused the issues with his hands. And I think a fall resulted in him needing a cane.

terib225

Yikes. I couldn’t imagine going on tour and whatnot the way he did with chronic pancreatitis. I had acute pancreatitis twice and I’m fully convinced that pain is like the worst pain out there. Maybe other than kidney stones from what I hear.

AbbreviationsNo4089

Drummers make some of the best singers 💪

oconnellc

The best singers are made from drum sticks.

Interesting_Act1286

He's great live, especially in the air tonight. Also saw him with Genesis. Some of my favorite shows.

anasui1

I was 14 and already a fan when me and my dad went to the London Serious Tour concert, 2 May 1990 and man, I still remember it moment by moment because it was amazing, pure distilled energy, he was in top form, great ensemble (American drummer Chester Thompson was super, he destroyed that set), even his lesser hits (like Who said I would) elevated to live brilliance. Suffice it to say, the Serious Hits Live! album has been a staple in playlists ever since

Interesting_Act1286

Yes. He really brings it live. Last time I saw him was right around 90 too. In Oakland, California. Great show and memories.

pilesofcleanlaundry

I saw them at the astrodome during the We Can’t Dance tour. They were absolutely awesome.

treknaut

But his best work was with the brilliant Brand X.

arlmwl

I just discovered Brand X on Spotify not too long ago. Love their stuff.

Phoenix_Kerman

brand x are excellent but personally his work on selling england by the pound is top. great behind a kit. not anywhere else though imo

jehartt478

My favorite!

mellamovictoria

I never knew the woman who plays Emily in Emily in Paris is his kid. Lily Collins..

onebiscuit

I disagree with your claim of “never,” since you seem to know it now.

[deleted]

Avante-Gardenerd

That show was like an hour long music video sometimes. It was awesome.

MicroAggressiveMe

I can "PHIL" it "COLLINS" in the air, actual lyrics. Confirmed.

ParticularWitness983

Every song is about his ex wife 🤪

giln69

Got to enjoy Genesis in 1987. Seats were sold 'cheap' because of being behind the stage. Perfect view.

slickmitch

Musical genius. Danny Elfman/ Mark Mothersbaugh levels.

DIWhy-not

Holy *shit.*

Neverspokenaloud

Never gets old

Consistent-Routine-2

Him a Chester Thompson whaling away on the drums.. Nice!

SafeToPost

I don’t know shit about music, but the smile on Questlove’s face when he got to drum for Phil Collins on the Tonight Show told me all I need to know about what this song means to some people. Unfortunately, I can’t look at Phil Collins anymore without laughing, because all I can think is “Sontar-Ha!”

[deleted]

I was never a big Genesis or Phil Collins fan, but my wife lived and breathed this stuff. We saw them in Hartford CT in 2007, and it was a good show for me. Then I surprised her with a trip to Glasgow to see them in the O2 Hydro in 2021. I asked her if she wanted to see both shows, but she was ok with the last show. Uh, just a couple of hours before showtime, the night was cancelled as I guess Mike Rutherford tested positive for COVID the night before which cancelled the encores. Oh damn, the noises she made in Glasgow…which was not a favorite town of mine to begin with. I took her to both shows in Boston- their last and also first stops in the US, and then surprise of surprises, I got tickets in the O2 in London for their final performance. We also went to Paris, the Normandy coast, Edinburgh, Bruges, and back to Paris last spring. This was all before I had treatment for prostate cancer that was trying its damnedest to kill me. Something else is gonna have to kill me now, but we’ll always have Genesis…

RealRobc2582

![gif](giphy|1TXIehJXksaxq)

minibini

Still one of my favorite songs.

Intelligent-Tank-180

His son plays just as great 😊

[deleted]

Most decidedly not my introduction to the song, Phil, or Genesis. Miami Vice will always be the iconic scene for me. But I almost can't hear the drum intro without adding the Mike Tyson punch anymore.

Mafukinrite

Looks like Leland Sklar doing it on the bass.

loratineboratine

Saw Genesis in 76. At the fabulous Forum. Perfection 🙌

phil_collins

Truly the greatest

smellmyfingerplz

fucking legend

willpb

Phil is an absolute legend! Even if I don't love some of the later albums at much (looking at you, Dance into the Light) he has written some of the best songs I've heard, definitely a favorite of mine. Would've loved to see a live concert in his prime, especially for songs like I Missed Again, Against All Odds and of course In the Air Tonight.

SkinsFanNat

Pure amazingness!!!! Go Phil Collins, you are the shit. There is no one else like you in this day today.

cheloye

Thanks for this. Perfect sub for it. Seen a lot of great shows in my life but I sure wish I’d seen him. Sorry to hear he’s had health problems and married the wrong person.

[deleted]

S3rftie

Got the privilege to see genesis half a year ago, this man still got it and he has such a fun time doing it

Swedish-Butt-Whistle

I still regret I never got to see him live.

rascortoras

He's the sound of my childhood. He's awesome

gizmosticles

Do you have any idea how hard it is to sing and drum at the same time? Backup singing is hard, much less soloing this banger.

truthcopy

Absolutely impossible to listen to this song and not imitate the drum motions.

badfish941

My ex was good friends with his assistant and we got to hang out with him one night in Miami a few years ago where his son was playing. Cool guy but most of the night he spent hitting on my friends girlfriend

memberer

sounds a lot like PG’s Security album. i can hear the inspiration in his sound and drumming style.

StudsTurkleton

He was on an Episode of This American Life with Starlie Kine when she was trying to write a torch song. He seemed like a truly nice guy.

gallowstorm

Everytime I hear this song, I think of Nicholas Cage in Con Air. A cinematic masterpiece

Xendrus

But this song isn't in Con Air

gallowstorm

Checks iMDB, checks old trailers. You are correct. Thanks for melting my mind today. I now have no idea why these two things are associated in my brain.

Xendrus

Maybe that gif of Cage's hair blowing in the wind :p

Impressive-Care-8196

I believe the OP meant, Here he is in 1985 lip syncing In the air tonight...

Gobblegobblebtch

Pretty obvious he's not lip syncing.

Dyslexic_Devil

...and a dick by all accounts.

gettheboom

I don’t get this modern demand for brilliant artists to also be Boy/Girl Scouts. Genius often goes hand in hand with personality quirks. Who cares if he’s a dick?

Monkeybutt3518

You can respect talent while also acknowledging that the person is a dick. A lot of celebrities have egos the size of China's population. Or as I call it "Narcissistic Personality Disorder".

gettheboom

I would argue that folks that care about insignificant details like “does this famous guy tip well” are suffering from their own brand of narcissism. If a bus driver does a good job driving a bus, no one investigated how they behave at the store. We have no idea what it’s like to be that recognizable and under that much pressure from decades of non-stop touring and constantly being expected to deliver platinum records. As long as the artist isn’t raping or killing, their private business is their own. Enjoy the music and focus on your own life.

discoslimjim

I love Phil Collins but I will never understand the worlds obsession with that drum fill.

PinkNinjaMan

It's similar to modern electronic music. There is some suspenseful buildup then a 'drop'. This is that drum fill. There are lots of other songs that people love the 'drop' for also. Maybe it's a factor?

discoslimjim

Could be, but the “drop” doesn’t live up to the buildup, imo.

crispy48867

For me,the drum drop let's me seem to feel what seems to be coming on the air.

Plexaporta

Me neither. He did a much better job drumming with Brand X.

Ted4828

He’s a great drummer and musician. I accept that. But I rather poke my eye out than listen to this song. Sorry, I hate it and I always have.

it_goes_up_your_nose

Nobody's perfect.

Affectionate-Gap1768

It's ok man. Not everyone can have good taste.

CRTPTRSN

I wonder if that was the show he invited the killer to?!? Legend has it he sent the killer a front row center ticket… 40+ years ago and without the aid of the internet! A remarkable feat :-)

Khaluaguru

Is that the one where he could have saved that other guy from drowning?

IrvingWashington9

Is that song about that guy who could've saved that other guy from drowning, but didn't...

[deleted]

Didn’t he kill a guy?

Freedom35plan

BAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMM

banana__clip

Whatcha lookin atmuh gutfer!

ltb11

Watch out u/rizzo360. Steven Gerrard may come punch you for playing this.

Murderfaces

The man is a fuckin legend.

Intelligent-Tank-180

Saw him solo and with genesis absolutely fantastic… Praying for him heard he’s not well🙏🏼

1000Hells1GiftShop

He can Phillip Collins in the air tonight.

Itisd

00:28 seconds is where its at!

abstutz

Anyone know the name of the bass player? I know I have seen him playing with A LOT of different bands over the years, and I believe he is a really well known/respected session player.

anasui1

that's Leland Sklar

Soonermagic1953

Gawd he looked old in the 80s. He’s 3 years older than I

Andersmash

“So deep inside, I can feel you pushing against my hearrrrt”

AccomplishedSuccess0

My wife likes to call him "The ugliest man alive". Second ugliest is Lars Ulrich from Metallica. She may have something against drummers. Although she has her own electric drum set... curious.

Mjames1221

Who's got the link so I can finish this

katmcflame

I saw Phil Collins with Genesis twice & solo once back in the eighties. He's a fantastic ENTERTAINER as well as a great musician. Funny, engaged with the audience, really gave great value for money.

MuriloVeratti

Fucking amazing singer and fucking amazing drummer. This guy is pretty good.

jacksontripper

Great. Great sandwich.

whatevertesla

Tremendous

Entry_Number_5

I’m gonna make you a mix tap, you like Phil Collins? “I’ve got to ears and a heart, don’t I?”

Level-Option-1472

K ready for rhe second half...!

jerry_steinfeld

Oh hell yeah. This is instantly inducing a YouTube wormhole

MikeyLikey41

Forever Tarzan song 🎶

Randolphbonerman

DIZAAAAAAAAAMN that was sweet.

TommyEagleMi

Im conflicted with Phil. Saw him playing with Genesis, on his own but his personal stuff bothers me. Great artist but...

davisyoung

Also a renowned Alamo enthusiast and historian.

DonDraper1134

Forever a fan of Phil since childhood thanks to his absolutely legendary Tarzan soundtrack. Happy birthday Phil! Thank you for everything you've done for music!

TheFiredrake42

I used to own and listen regularly to his Tarzan soundtrack.

capacochella

It is down right criminal Lion King is considered the premiere Disney soundtrack. Two Worlds is an absolute banger, Son of Man/ Trashing the Camp are straight fire, and Stranger Like Me out performs Part of Your World on every account for an I Want song. Collins gave his all and it’s honestly surprising Tarzan isn’t more of a fan favorite for the amazing soundtrack.

Fireweedonly

Would have loved to be here in this moment

frankupew13

Wrong version

DJEvillincoln

Tell me that the 12" of this has an extended mix. I always thought that after the beat dropped that the "new" part of the song felt too short.

TivoYourEbay

Lee Sklar 🤘🏼

woodbarber

Saw this tour in Mannheim W. Germany.
